Following singles/EPs on George FitzGerald's ManMakeMusic and other labels, UK producer Leon Vynehall put out his first lengthy release, Music for the Uninvited, this year via Martyn's 3024 label. Though he technically calls it a mini LP, its seven songs in over 35 minutes come off like a very complete statement, rather than a promising EP that ends too quickly. He tells Red Bull that the inspiration for the album was to evoke his earliest memories of absorbing music. He talks about subconsciously hearing cassettes in his mother's car as a child, and now romanticizing about the tape hiss those tracks would all have, as well as playing video games like Zelda, whose music directly influenced the album's opening track, "Inside the Deku Tree."
Don't let the sound of that make you think this is another of those '80s/'90s "VHS-style" nostalgia projects or an 8-bit chiptune thing. "Inside the Deku Tree" is full of gorgeous strings, jazz piano, and some rattling percussion that never fully dives into dance music. Other parts of the album are ready-made for the dancefloor though, like the house-inspired "Be Brave, Clench Fists" and "Pier Children." And those jazz influences are further explored too. "St. Sinclair" is like Herbie Hancock gone IDM (or, Flying Lotus), and elements of jazz and fusion pop up on other tracks as well. You can stream the album in full (via SPIN) below.
Leon also has a number of international dates coming up this year, and will come to the US for NYC's Warm Up at MoMA PS1 which he plays on August 9 with his pals George FitzGerald and Martyn, as well as Mutual Dreaming's Aurora Halal and San Francisco house producer Matrixxman (who played NYC with Martyn in June). That's a day show running from 3-9 PM and tickets are on sale now. Later that night, George and Leon will team up yet again for a Blkmarket show in a secret NYC location. Tickets for that late show are on sale now. Stay tuned for more details.
Leon is also featured on Isaac Tichauer's new mixtape. All of his dates are listed, with the mini LP stream, below...
Nina Kraviz, who released her excellent debut album last year, is going on an international tour this year which brings her to Williamsburg dance club Output on July 3 for a Blkmarket-presented show with Ben Klock and Taimur & Fahad. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Her only other US show that we're aware of is Movement Festival in Detroit. All dates are listed below (via Resident Advisor).
Nina has been making headlines lately due to her "bath scene" (pictured above) from the interview video Resident Advisor did with her last month. FACT pointed to an article by Greg Wilson about Nina over-sexualizing herself, which Nina responded to in her own letter on Facebook. More controversy arose when Crosstown Rebels' Maceo Plex offered his take on it (which he's since apologized for). And FACT published another article on the matter, which discussed sexism in music, an issue that was also publicly taken on by Grimes and by Solange this week.
All Nina Kraviz dates are listed, along with the Resident Advisor video, a music video, and her entire Facebook letter, below...

DOWNLOAD: Joy Orbison - "Big Room Tech House Dj Tool - TIP!" (MP3)
UK producer Joy Orbison (aka Peter O'Grady) hasn't been to the US in about two years and he recently announced that he'll be going on a short North American tour this February. That tour brings him to NYC for a Blkmarket-presented Nonplus+ Records showcase at a TBA Brooklyn location on February 15. Tickets for that show are on sale now. Joy Orbison will be playing with Nonplus+ head Boddika, and the bill also features Joey Anderson and Blkmarket DJs Taimur & Fahad.
The show doubles as an album release party for Think and Change, an upcoming compilation from NonPlus+ which is due out on February 25. The compilation features a deep house track from Boddika and Joy Orbison ("&Fate") and a wobbly cut from Joy Orbison solo ("Big Room Tech House Dj Tool - TIP!"), both of which you can stream below, and the latter of which you can download above. It also features tracks by Four Tet, Pearson Sound, Martyn, Instra:mental, and more. The full tracklist is below.
Joy Orbison's tour dates also include a London show on the European tour that Mister Saturday Night (Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin's NYC dance party) is going on in February. Mister Saturday Night also has a ton of local events in NYC coming up, including one with FaltyDL.
Speaking of Blkmarket shows at TBA NYC locations, Russian singer/producer Nina Kraviz, who we highlighted last year and who will be featured on the new Brandt Brauer Frick album, is playing one on January 26 with Cem & Rg, Talmur & Fahad, and more guests TBA. Tickets for that one are on sale now. It's the day after the previously discussed Blkmarket-presented Ellen Allien show (tickets).
