Blondes & Avey Tare @ PS1 Warm Up on July 31st

Avey Tare and Deakin of Animal Collective were among the DJs at PS1 Warm Up on Saturday, July 31st. Other sets & performances included Blondes, Prince Rama, Babe Rainbow, CFCF and Oneohtrix Point Never (who only performed for 15 minutes because of problems with his equipment).

Another AnCo member, Panda Bear, who played Pitchfork Fest in July, will be performing at the Beach at Governors Island on September 11th. Tickets are still on sale.

MoMA's annual summer season of parties at PS1 in Long Island City, aka Warm Up, returns on July 3rd and there are lot of familiar names on this year's lineup. That is due in part to this year's curators being Dean Bein of True Panther Records, Jon Galkin from DFA, Kris Chen (XL), Ronan from LPR, writer Brandon Stusoy (Stereogum, etc), and Robin from Tri Angle. Pendu presents: NY EYE & EAR FEST III
...a massive Annual Music and Arts Fete showcasing some of the most exciting bands, artists, and filmmakers currently living and working here in NYC. In addition, NYE&E assembles a Record Fair featuring NYC-based Record Labels and Vendors selling LPs, CDs, 7?'s, cassettes, lathes, comics, zines, stickers, and art prints. NYE&E exists to facilitate the introduction of new artists placing them side-by-side with the more well-known like an eclectic living mixtape of sound and vision. This is a festival for discovery - discover new bands + discover new art + buy new records + meet new people...

The title of the fest is inspired from the 1964 NY Eye & Ear Control soundtrack by Albert Ayler as well as the all-too-familiar signs seen daily in the subway tunnels by riders of the L-train of the infamous NY Eye & Ear Infirmary.

2009's NY Eye & Ear Fest happened in July of last year and featured performances from Magik Markers, Liturgy, Drunkdriver, Child Abuse, and tons of others. This year, the fest will spread over two days (May 22-23) at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn and will feature appearances from Blank Dogs (one of two NYC shows in May, the second being May 12th at 131 Chrystie St.), Liturgy, Twin Stumps, Effi Briest, and others on the first day, with Xeno & Oaklander, Figure Study, Naam, Freshkills, Effing, and others rounding out day two. "A Place to Bury Strangers and The Big Pink made a perfectly complimentary pair last night at Webster Hall. Both bands draw from the same influences, '80s post-punk/noise pop such as New Order and the Jesus and Mary Chain, but their distillation produces opposite results." [NY Press]

Most awesome show tonight for @truepanther with Lemonade + Tanlines + Blondes + Pictureplane and new fav beats man Janka Nabay.-ilirjana

Tanlines...

Tanlines, Lemonade and Janka Nabay played a co-release party at Monster Island on Friday, March 5th for each of their three EPs. Tanlines' Settings is out March 9th (today) on True Panther Sounds/Matador Records, as are Lemonade's Pure Moods and Janka's Bubu King EPs. Also at the show were Pictureplane and Blondes.

The show took place right before Pictureplane played two more NYC shows, but with Washed Out and Small Black (the beginning of the three bands' tour together).

Tanlines play NYC again this Friday (3/12) at Eyebeam's Mixer: Olympiad (540 W 21st St) with Maluca and many many visual artists ("Artists, designers, musicians, engineers, and hackers alike will stage events that evoke the passion, the drive, the danger, and the majesty of competitive sport and mass spectacle. Join one of the five competing nations, and race for Olympic glory!") Tickets are on sale.

Lemonade is on tour with MNDR and These Are Powers, and plays Mercury Lounge on march 29th with Delorean and Brahms (tickets are on sale).

Most of the band mentioned here are heading to SXSW. Delorean, Lemonade, and Tanlines all play the True Panther showcase Todd P is hosting at Cheer Up Charlie's on March 18th. Tour dates for all of the above bands and more pictures are below...

Micachu & The Shapes are touring with Spoon and Deerhunter this April. Before that, they'll be doing a Tuesday, March 30th show at NYC's (Le) Poisson Rouge with Tanlines. Tickets are on sale.

In addition to being at SXSW and MtyMx, Tanlines is playing a release party for its Settings EP (out March 9th on True Panther Sounds) on March 5th at Monster Island Basement. Also on the bill are Lemonade, Janka Nabay and Blondes. (It's not just a release party for Tanlines, you can get entry and 3 new 12"s from Tanlines, Lemonade and Janka Nabay for $25.)

Raisa Khan of Micachu & The Shapes sat in on keys and vocals with her friends UK band Laurel Collective at Hindenburg Mile High Club in London on Saturday, February 6th. The show was part of the band's monthly residency at the spot. Laurel Collective's debut album (actually a mini-album), Feel Good Hits Of A Nuclear Winter, came out in 2008 on Domino. Their more recent material (including a free cover of Micachu's "Golden Phone") is available online. They live up to the collective part of their name with a youthful group feel similar to Los Campesinos or Nana Grizol. Laurel Collective will be at SXSW this year for shows throughout the festival. Since 2003, Unsound Festival, Poland's most adventurous music festival, has brought a bold and uniquely modern program of music to Kraków. Now, with seven festivals in their native city under their belt (and outpost events further east in cities like Minsk),
Unsound is coming west to New York for their first ever North American edition. Unsound Festival New York's mission is to forge new links between music genres, between generations and even between artistic practices.

The driving force in the assembling of the New York program has been Unsound Festival's commitment to forms of music and sound art that involve experimentation and risk. Unsound Festival has made a worldwide reputation by breaking new ground while dealing with vibrant electronic, experimental, independent, post-classical and club music scenes from around the world.

The festival will kick off on Thursday, February 4th, with the first ever US performance from Vladislav Delay + Lillevan as well as Sebastian Meissner + Kwartludium as Solid State Transmitter. The former will perform their "ongoing series of electronic music and video improvisations", while the latter will reimagine SST Records (yes, that SST) through the eyes of a classical composer (wow, awesome). The FREE show will take place at David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center.

Feb 5th begins the start of Warhol Program, a series of pieces designed for and in tribute to Andy Warhol. The great Carl Craig will join nsi. for live soundtracks to "Blow Job" and "Kiss" respectively during a pair of screenings that night at The Film Society of Lincoln Center, Walter Reade Theater> Tickets are currently on sale for both the first showing at 7:30 (tix), and the second going down at 9:30 PM (tix). The show will be the US debut of the pieces, with nsi.'s piece being it's world debut. For the night owls, the party continues at Public Assembly, who will house Bunker parties on that night, 2/12, and 2/13. More details about the Bunker parties are at their site.

The Warhol Program continues the next day (2/6), when Groupshow (Jan Jelinek, Andrew Pekler, Hanno Leichtmann) will lead a free eight-hour (!) improvisation to Andy Warhol's film "Empire" at LPR. Maybe hook up a sack lunch?

After eight hours of improv, LPR will make way for A Century of Dance Music featuring the US debut of Moritz Von Oswald Trio:

Berliner Moritz Von Oswald is well known for his work as part of the duos Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound as well as for his own "M" series of recordings. He could be labeled the inventor of "dub techno," if that weren't too narrow a tag to define the scope of his music and accomplishments. Moritz Von Oswald is highly ranked by many critics and fans alike as one of the most original electronic music producers of the last two decades. [On 2/6] Von Oswald unveils his new trio featuring Vladislav Delay on drums and Max Loderbauer on electronics in their first ever North American performance. Last year their debut album was released by London's Honest Jons.

In tribute to Von Oswald, the evening opens with New York City's Ensemble LPR - the flexible house band of the venue (Le) Poisson Rouge which is led by LPR's two young founders - David Handler (violinist / composer) and Justin Kantor (cellist) along with fellow Manhattan School of Music graduate Orlando Alonso (conductor / pianist). The Ensemble will perform new renditions of Ravel's "Bolero" and selections from Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" based on remixes Moritz Von Oswald and Carl Craig assembled in 2008 for the Deutsche Grammophon album "Recomposed" (released only in Europe).

Doors are at 10PM, and tickets are on sale.
