Peasant and Port O'Brien open for Bodies of Water at Mercury Lounge in NYC tonight (August 13, 2008).
Port O'Brien has stirred up quite a lot of press coverage in a few short years, thanks in part to being name-checked by M. Ward as his favorite new band and exposure on tours opening for Bright Eyes, the Cave Singers, and Modest Mouse, among others. The group, based in California when not working in a cannery off the coast of Alaska, also garnered a place on several "Best of 2007" album lists. If you happened to see any of those tours, you know that all the accolades are not empty hipster hype. If you had the misfortune to miss them, a new release offers another chance to get on board. [Popmatters]Loxsly and Port O'Brien open for Bodies of Water at Union Hall on Friday. The new BOW album "A Certain Feeling" was released on Secretly Canadian on July 22nd. A Port O'Brien video and all tour dates below...

So remember how Bodies of Water were going on tour with Le Loup? Well, Bodies of Water dropped off that tour to instead tour with Sons and Daughters (who "are set to release their brand new album This Gift on Domino Records on January 29, 2008"). NYC shows are at Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall. All dates below...

Le Loup @ Pianos (BV CMJ), NYC - Oct 2007 (CRED)

First of all, David from Bodies of Water did send a message (and a comment) to say that his late-night drunken posting to the Bodies of Water website was not a reflection of the entire band, and was removed at their request. He is not trying to start anything or make his band sound better - just a mistake. That said, Bodies of Water (Secretly Canadian) are going on a spring tour with Le Loup (Hardly Art). It looks like they'll both also be playing SXSW before making their way to Mercury Lounge and Union Hall. All dates below.....

This was maybe going to be a post about how the-band-recently-signed-to-Secretly-Canadian Bodies of Water posted some free Christmas songs for download on their MySpace page, but then this message they posted on the homepage of their regular website seemed even more interesting...
12.21.07 - I can't understand why anyone likes these musical groups and singers:And to that Steely Dan might say...Wilco
Jeff Buckley
Elvis Costello
The Police
Slint
Rush
Joni Mitchell
Steely Dan
Afghan WhigsPerhaps you are offended by this. If so, I feel glad. You need to be shaken up. You need to have whatever skewed values you've cultivated over the years CHALLENGED. Listen again to this stuff - you will see that it is junk. (I say all this with the utmost sincerity, but I'm sure that in a year or two 'synchronicity' will be on heavy rotation in my house. This goes for all of these except for Steely Dan. I will never, ever like Steely Dan as long as I live.)
Check out the Bodies of Water take away show @ La Blogoteque (and while you're at it, check out the new Jens Lekman one too).

Although they didn't announce it until Friday, Phosphorescent and Bodies of Water were more than just tour-mates when they came through town earlier this month - they were also label-mates (sort of). Phosphorescent's excellent new album Pride came out on Dead Oceans, and Bodies of Water can now call Secretly Canadian their home. Dead Oceans and Secretly Canadian (and Jagjaguwar) are sisters.
Secretly Canadian is extremely proud to announce the addition of Bodies of Water to its roster! .....With some distribution help from Secretly Canadian, the physical album ("Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink"_ will be officially released in stores December 4th in all good record shops in the States, and in the rest of the world on January 22. The band's first release for Secretly Canadian will happen in the Spring of 2008.Bodies of Water don't have any upcoming shows right now, but Phosphorescent has two new ones - both in Brooklyn: December 13th @ Sound Fix & December 15th at Music Hall of Williamsburg with White Magic. All tour dates below....

I spent much of this weekend (and this morning) listening to Phosphorescent's excellent new album Pride - out now on Dead Oceans. If I had to describe it, I'd say it fits in nicely with its label-mate Dirty Projectors, but is more like (a lot like) Will Oldham (aka Bonnie Prince Billy) with a bit of Neil Young and Sufjan Stevens thrown into the mix. (read Pitchfork's review for a more thorough analysis).
Then I got excited today when I remembered that Phosphorescent has two NYC shows scheduled for this week - Silent Barn on Friday (November 9th) & Cake Shop on Saturday (the old dates had that order reversed in case you're confused like I just was). Bodies of Water also play both shows.
Bodies of Water

Bodies of Water are a quartet from LA creating 60's Pop-folk numbers, complete with four-part harmonies and buckets of choral chanting. Their new album Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink was self-released through the band's own Thousand Tongues label, and has been getting good reviews all over the place. [Covert Curiosity]Then coincidentally Dead Oceans asked me if I'd like to do a giveaway for these shows today, and I said "yes, that's perfect thanks". Contest details, and updated tour dates, below....
