Hopefully Danzig will have a better experience at Bonnaroo than he did at Fun Fun Fun Fest last year.

Sasquatch

The new year is approaching, and while you're making last minute plans and thinking up your resolutions, you can also start thinking about what festivals to attend in 2012. Here are some updates on next year's US festivals (not in any particular order).

SXSW, which is taking place from March 9-18 in Austin, with the music portion form March 13-18, has already announced a bunch of bands. If you register before January 13, you'll be able to save a bit.

New Orleans Jazz Fest is taking place from April 27 - May 6. The lineup includes The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Reunion, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Foo Fighters, Bon IverMy Morning Jacket, Feist, Janelle Monae, and others. The full lineup is below. Tickets are on sale now.

Sasquatch is taking place this year from May 25-28 in Gorge, Washington. 4-Day passes will be on presale through New Year's Eve, and general sale starts February 11. New for 2012, "Patrons who purchase a 4-day festival ticket will be allowed re-entry from the Festival grounds! This will not apply to any other ticket, only the 4-day pass."

Bonnaroo will be taking place from June 7-10 this year in Manchester, TN. Presale tickets have sold out but tickets will go on sale to the general public in the coming months. Also check out a Spotify playlist of the Bonnaroo staff's favorite songs of 2011.

Coachella, will take place over the course of two weekends this year (April 13-15 and 20-22). Other than a fake lineup poster that has been floating around, no artists have been officially announced yet.

Noise Pop will be celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2012 from February 21-26 in San Francisco. So far the lineup includes Archers of Loaf, Built to Spill, Big Freedia, Surfer Blood, Grimes, Bleached, John Vanderslice, Ume, and others. Check out the full list below.

Austin City Limits is taking place from October 12-14 in Zilker Park in Austin. Souvenir 3-day passes and early bird 3-day passes have sold out but regular 3-day passes are on sale now.

Lollapalooza will take place in 2012 from August 3-5 in Grant Park in Chicago. Tickets will go on sale this spring. As BVChicago mentioned, Lollapalooza is also taking place in Chile and Brazil this year.

Bamboozle, now in a new location, is taking place from May 18-20 in Asbury Park in New Jersey this year. So far the scary lineup includes Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, Skrillex, Blink 182, Incubus, and Mac Miller. 3-Day wristbands are on sale now.

Bumbershoot is taking place from September 1-3 at Seattle Center in Seattle, WA. Tickets are available and Bumbershoot are currently having a holiday sale where single day tickets are half off (originally $150, now $75).

NYC's own Governors Ball, which took place at Governors Island in 2011, has been moved to the bigger Randall's Island and will take place over the course of two days, June 23 and 24. Like last year, there will be no overlapping sets. Compared to the others listed here, this is not quite a big "festival", but unlike anything else listed above, it does happen in NYC. Artist announcements and tickets are coming soon.

The Strokes
Bonnaroo 2011

"The 10th anniversary [of Bonnaroo] was a celebration of how far the festival has come but also reminded us how it got there. There was something for everyone. The String Cheese Incident and Widespread Panic, who played at the first Bonnaroo, were there to remind people of the festival's jam-band roots. Lil Wayne and Big Boi were there along with Eminem to represent what the festival has become. In between, there were legendary acts like Robert Plant and The Band of Joy, Buffalo Springfield, Gregg Allman, Loretta Lynn, Dr. John, and Bruce Hornsby, which attracted an older crowd that resembled festival crowds of years past.

There were also more recently successful bands that attracted a younger crowd, such as Arcade Fire, The Strokes, The Black Keys, Neon Trees, Mumford & Sons, and The Decemberists.

One of the greatest features of Bonnaroo is that there are plenty of non-music entertainment options for those who need a break from music, the heat, or just need a diversion.

There was a cinema tent where rockumentaries and movies were screened, if you wanted to get out of the heat and cool down. There was a comedy tent that has been graced by comedians like Conan O'Brien and Margaret Cho. Dave Attelland hosted one of my favorite Bonnaroo performances when Flight of the Conchords performed in 2007. This year saw funny-men Lewis Black, Cheech Marin, and Tim Minchin among others in a strong rotation.

Sports fans concerned about the NHL and NBA Finals were happy to find the Bonnaroo Sports Bar where they could play pop-a-shot and watch the games on flat-screen monitors.

Artists were encouraged to show their stuff on the graffiti walls that lined much of the 700-acre farm. By the end of the weekend, you could spend all day walking up and down along the wall, finding some beautiful (and some not so beautiful) creations. " [The Epoch Times]

Twin Shadow at Bonnaroo (more by Graeme Flegenheimer)
Twin Shadow

Twin Shadow announced a fall tour dubbed the 'Clean Cuts' tour. It hits Maxwell's on September 6 and Webster Hall on October 7. Ticket pre-order starts today (6/16) and runs through June 21. Pre-ordering a ticket gives you the chance to get an exclusive T-shirt and 1.5" button for most shows, though not the Maxwell's one. General sale starts June 23. All dates are listed at the end of this post. Here are are some of them, each represented with a different haircut:

Clean Cuts

Meanwhile Twin Shadow play a few shows this month with Florence & the Machine, including the previously announced Central Park Summerstage show on June 24.

You can also catch them at a number of festivals including Sled Island, Pitchfork Fest, Hopscotch, ACL, and Moogfest. They just played Bonnaroo...

"If Morrissey, Peter Gabriel, and Prince could make babies together, their progeny would almost certainly form a band and call themselves Twin Shadow. Heartfelt, heady and totally funky, the group's live show transformed George Lewis Jr.'s intimate debut Forget -- where the Twin Shadow main brain played all of the instruments -- into a freewheeling full-band boogie fest. The tracks grew exponentially at every turn. Canned kits became crushing drums, bass burbles became serious bumps, sound effects became walls of synth, and Lewis transformed into a dance-driven taskmaster. Between songs, he pointed at the cameraman in front of him and addressed the fans: "If this guy doesn't shake his ass, I want you to break down the barricade and make him." Even spare, mellow album moments like "Tyrant Destroyed" could've cracked a disco ball by dint of their sheer dynamism, and on the heartbroken "Slow," Lewis shattered a few hearts in the audience by shredding his voice on the clutch lyric, "I don't wanna believe, or be, in love." He followed with an arena-sized guitar solo that inspired the kind of frothing cheer usually saved for soccer matches, not chilly '80s-inspired indie pop dreamed up in a Brooklyn bedroom." [SPIN]

Gogol Bordello brought the gypsy punk to Bonnaroo over the weekend. A set of pictures taken from the stage during their performance are in this post. Robyn @ Bonnaroo
Bonnaroo

Robyn played Bonnaroo this past weekend, where she spoke to MTV News about her current tourmate... Katy Perry. After initially avoiding the question of whether or not she is a fan of Katy Perry's, she told MTV at Bonnaroo:

"I think that girls are always expected to have opinions about each other, and maybe I don't have an opinion about some things, you know? That doesn't mean I have a bad opinion or a good opinion, it's just that, at that point, I never met her," Robyn said. "I didn't know much about her album that was out, and it was hard for me to have an opinion, and that's all. There's some songs that she's made that I think [are] amazing: the pre-chorus in 'Teenage Dream,' I wish I had wrote that. So, it's all good."
Good that things aren't awkward between them, because they're on tour together now. They'll play Nassau Coliseum on June 17 and Prudential Center in NJ on June 19.

The day after the NJ show, Robyn plays a free show at Terminal 5. No, not that Terminal 5. She's playing the Jet Blue one inside JFK Airport on 6/20. Like Jet Blue shows at JFK Airport in the past, the show will be for contest winners and people who happen to be catching a plane.

And speaking of indie-leaning, major label-signed, future Scandinavian female pop stars that are playing in NYC this week and opening shows for Katy Perry (yuck), Oh Land is playing a Northside Festival show at Brooklyn Bowl on Friday (6/17) with Rye Rye and Deluka. Doors are at 10:30pm, and Oh Land headlines the show at 1am. Tickets are on sale..

Hopefully Oh Land has a chance to rest after the late show, because she's also playing the NYC Pride Rally in Central Park the next day, Saturday, June 18th, 2011, 3:00 - 6:00 PM. Oh Land opens for Katy Perry in California in August, after her tour with Sia that brings her to Webster Hall this summer.

Janelle Monae, Marina & The Diamonds, and Jessie J are also opening dates on Katy's current tour.

Rye Rye (also on the bill of the Oh Land show at Brooklyn Bowl) just released a new video starring... Robyn! Titled "Never Will Be Mine", the track is basically Rye Rye rapping along with Robyn who is singing her 2005 hit song "Be Mine". Check out that video, along with more pictures from Robyn's set at Bonnaroo, a video of Oh Land playing Craig Ferguson recently, and all tour dates, below...

Two New York men who got arrested here Friday never made it to Bonnaroo. That's because law officers allegedly found they were carrying over a pound of cocaine, 1,000 ecstasy pills, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

Alberto R. Almonte, 40, and Joseph Cruz, 29, both of the Bronx, N.Y., are charged with possession of drugs for sale and possession of drug paraphernalia. Almonte is also charged with speeding.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, it was around 2 p.m. Friday when Trooper Matilda Mahaney clocked a 2006 Chevrolet Impala doing 83 in a 55 mile-per-hour zone on Highway 111 in Putnam County.

The trooper stopped the car "and discovered that the two occupants were enroute to Bonnaroo in Manchester," says a news release from the THP. [Herald Citizen]

The Decemberists @ Bonnaroo
Bonnaroo

Are the Decemberists breaking up?

"Nothing could be farther from the truth," Meloy said Saturday on his tour bus in the parking lot behind Bonnaroo's big stage. "With this record I feel we have a whole world in front of us with plenty of options and I'm excited to continue writing music for The Decemberists and performing with The Decemberists."

He just wants to do something else for a while.

Driven by a powerful lead song, "Down by the Water," that featured harmony from Gillian Welch, "The King is Dead" hit No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 earlier this year, a rare feat for an indie folk rock band known for its challenging material. A top-selling record is often a bonanza for a band and the impulse is to tour nonstop to capitalize on the opportunity.

Yet The Decemberists will wind down touring in August and won't tour in the fall. Instead Meloy, who calls himself "compulsively creative," will begin promoting his new illustrated young adult book "Wildwood," the first in a fantasy series for HarperCollins he plans to produce with his wife, the artist Carson Ellis. The book idea predates The Decemberists when Meloy worked in a pizza place and played open mic gigs and Ellis worked in a bar and painted in her free time.

"I've managed to pull it off over the last year and a half but it owes a lot to chance and luck and, thankfully, some creative epiphanies," Meloy said. "I think it would water down both things if I tried to do them at the same time."

He also would like to write a musical and tackle a studio project or two during this ... quiet period? And he wants to spend more time at home to be with his son, Hank, who is autistic.

The other members of the Portland, Ore.-based band have things to focus on as well. Founding accordion and keyboard player Jenny Conlee was diagnosed with breast cancer this spring and sat out the band's summer dates. [AP/NY Times]

Unlike at Sasquatch at the end of May, Jenny did not play with the Decemberists at Bonnaroo, and she is not expected at Prospect Park on Tuesday. The Brooklyn show is sold out, but if you don't have a ticket you can always still sit outside the fence and listen.

More pictures and a couple of videos from Bonnaroo below...

Henry Rollins (spoken word) / Bradford Cox (Deerhunter)
Bonnaroo
Bonnaroo

"Atlanta's own Deerhunter was the main draw on Thursday night, a low-key alternative to Friday's star-studded lineup. In fact, two people approached me during their set to ask who we were hearing. But no matter: The indie-rock prodigies went pleasantly cerebral on a crowd too tired to do more than sprawl on the grass and nod." [Creative Loafing]
Bonnaroo 2011 kicked off on Thursday and continues through Sunday in Tennessee. If you're not there, you can always stream some of it online in your air conditioned room while people at the fest are battling the heat on the ground. Speaking of which, the heat may be to blame for one untimely death at the festival, though the medical examiner hasn't reached a conclusion yet.

Karen -- Bonnaroo 2011

Jack -- Bonnaroo 2011
Bonnaroo

"Later at The Other Tent came a set from Nashville's most high-profile, willowy redhead supermodel-turned-songstress, Karen Elson. While orienting myself in the now-somewhat-spacious media area near the stage-right speaker stack, the crowd erupted in a brief fit. Why? What could it be? What did I miss? Oh, Elson's old man Jack White was visible side-stage for a fleeting moment. Between most of the attendees' visible Jack White boners and all the Third Man Records shirts present, I think it's safe to say a lot of TMR's built-in fan set was in attendance. And yes, Elson's band was made up of the expected cast of Third Man all-stars, among them Greenhornes/Raconteurs "Little" Jack Lawrence and the always-stellar Patrick Keeler. Elson's spooky, gauzy Americana tunes were strong and spacious enough to leave her players room to show off their chops, and her voice was stronger than I anticipated. Plus, "Stolen Roses" sounded like a bit of a nod to "Scarborough Fair."" [Nashville Scene]
That review, like the pictures in this post, refer to Karen Elson's Thursday night set at Bonnaroo 2011. One day later, aka today (6/10), Karen and Jack announced their divorce that they are celebrating in Nashville tonight. More pictures from her Bonnaroo set below...

Bonnaroo

Bonnaroo kicks off in Manchester, Tennessee today (6/9) and continues through Sunday (6/12). The lineup includes Beirut, The Strokes, Buffalo Springfield (including Stephen Stills and Neil Young), Big Boi, Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, Deerhunter, and many others.

If you can't make it out to Tennessee, VEVO is streaming performances from the festival from Friday (6/10) through Sunday (6/12). If you miss any of the streams, on-demand performances will be made available via VEVO later.

Best Coast

In addition to their date supporting The Decemberists at the now sold-out Prospect Park benefit on June 14th, Best Coast has added a headlining NYC show. The band will team with Those Darlins to play a benefit for Planned Parenthood on June 16th at Le Poisson Rouge. Tickets are on sale for the show which is a almost two months before Best Coast return to the NYC-area to take part in the first-ever "Escape to New York" fest in the Hamptons.

Sasquatch

The Sasquatch! Music Festival is proud to announce that the event has completely sold out of all 100,000 tickets (25,000 per day over 4 days) in record time exactly one week from the lineup announcement.

All festival attendees are encouraged to carpool to the event and register their mileage savings at www.esurance.com/carpool to win prizes and track the positive environmental impact. People who shared rides to Sasquatch in 2010 (and registered with Zimride), saved 326,920 driving miles--the equivalent of 1.37 trips to the moon.

This year's Coachella sold out slightly quicker. This year's Bonnaroo goes on sale Saturday, February 19th at noon Eastern. The lineup was announced today.

The Walkmen are playing Bonnaroo, and their frontman is playing in Brooklyn this weekend.

The xx @ Webster Hall in March (more by Bao Nguyen)
The xx

"Marry me, Oliver!" was the cry from a desperate girl in the crowd when the trio finally took the stage under low light to begin systematically breaking hearts, including mine. (Mr. Blue Sky, don't fail me now!!) For those who missed Joy Division the first time, I am so happy you have your own version now -- as Oliver Sim and Romy Croft whispered the first words of a delicately slowed-down "Crystalised," they were joined by hundreds of quiet, worshipful voices in the crowd, and I found myself mesmerized by their totally depressing stage presence. (Croft's sadness alone could make a dorm at Sarah Lawrence crumble into dust.) Their strength comes in stillness, in the ability to distill all the dance grooves of their contemporaries into a single note plucked over and over from a single string. At close distance, they are a stunning live band.

In the back of a muddy tent? Maybe not so stunning -- I crawled out from the mobbed sidestage and wrapped around to the center of gen pop, where the crowd was already starting to wander away, engaged in conversation or spastic dancing or the eating of brown foods. Some dude walked past me and muttered something to his buddy about what would happen if "the dude from Depeche Mode who killed himself" could see this band. I started to notice that from afar, the stoic plucking of a single string with whispered lyrics layered on top doesn't really hold anyone's attention. But there wasn't much I could do short of find a border collie and try to herd people deeper into the tent, so I hung for a while, heard "Basic Space" (my patented I Can Leave If I Hear This Song™ system having gone into effect at midnight), and headed for the car. I may have shuffled my feet despondently a bit on the way there.
[Entertainment Weekly on the xx at Bonnaroo]

The band's full Bonnaroo set is currently streaming at NPR.

As previously mentioned, The xx will be in NYC for a free show at the Central Park SummerStage on Sunday, August 8th with Jack Penate and Chairlift. That's the day after the band plays Lollapalooza, and right before the band heads to Europe for a trip that includes an appearance at Oslo, Norway's Oya Festival. The full Oya lineup is below

The Flaming Lips and an allied group, Stardeath and White Dwarfs, played the entirety of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" with no deference at all. With fuzztone bass and wah-wah guitars, a garage-rock kick and non-portentous vocals, it went lurching toward Flaming Lips' disheveled version of madness rather than Pink Floyd's majestic one.

Wayne Coyne, to stir up the crowd, claimed there was actual money inside some of the balloons released during "Money." Who knows?"

You can listen to the Flaming Lips' 2-set performance in NPR's archive. People have also posted it for download.

Tickets are on sale at 11am for the upcoming Flaming Lips show at Terminal 5.
