Lapalux

After releasing some great EPs over the past couple years, UK producer Lapalux put out his debut album, Nostalchic, earlier this year via Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label. The album lies somewhere between future garage and the instrumental hip hop that's usually characteristic of Brainfeeder artists. You can watch the video for album track "Without You" and stream another, "Guuurl," below.

Lapalux will be coming over to North America later this year for a tour which begins in NYC on September 4 at Le Bain, and also ends in NYC on October 5 at Glasslands for a show with Natasha Kmeto and Alex Burkat. Tickets for the Glasslands show go on sale Tuesday (7/2) at 10 AM.

All dates are listed, along with the tour flyer and song streams, below...

Captain Murphy

As mentioned, Janelle Monae collaborator Erykah Badu (under the name DJ Low Down Loretta Brown) is coming to NYC during the Red Bull Music Academy residency to DJ a Brainfeeder Session at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Tuesday (4/30), which is now sold out. We hinted at Flying Lotus being a special guest at that show, but we just found out it's arguably more exciting than that. He'll be there, but not for a Flying Lotus set. Instead, he'll be making the NYC debut of his rap project Captain Murphy. Plus, the bill will include rap duo The Underachievers (who play a free show in June), Teebs, Azizi Gibson, and PBDY.

We're also giving away tickets to the Flying Lotus shows at Terminal 5, which are also part of the Red Bull Music Academy residency.

Show flyer and a Captain Murphy video below...

Thundercat

Thundercat (aka bass freak Stephen Bruner) is set to release the followup to his 2011 debut, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, this year. The new album is called Apocalypse and it was executive produced by Brainfeeder label head/frequent Thundercat collaborator Flying Lotus. The album will be out via Brainfeeder on July 9. Check out the first single, "Heartbreaks + Setbacks," whose melody is seriously reminding me of "Yeah" by Usher, below.

As mentioned, Thundercat and Flying Lotus are also touring together this year, which will bring them to NYC for Red Bull Music Academy shows on May 5 and 6 at Terminal 5. Nigel Godrich's band, Ultraista, are also on both of those shows. Tickets for both are still available. While Thundercat is in NYC, he's also doing Red Bull Music Academy's Night of Improvised Round Robin Duets, which happens on May 1 at Brooklyn Masonic Temple with Andrew Bird, Questlove, James Chance, Julia Holter, Kim Gordon, Andrew WK, and many others (sold out).

All dates are listed, along with the song stream and Apocalypse tracklist, below...

Flying Lotus at LPR in 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Flying Lotus

As mentioned, Flying Lotus is playing a NYC show on May 5 at Terminal 5 with Thundercat, as part of the upcoming Red Bull Music Academy NYC residency. It's since been announced that the Terminal 5 show is part of a larger tour FlyLo and Thundercat will be on, and Nigel Godrich's Ultraista is on many of the dates, including the NYC show, as well. Tickets for the NYC show are still available.

The Red Bull Music Academy shows also include a previously mentioned Brainfeeder Session at Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 30 which Erykah Badu is DJing (under the name DJ Low Down Loretta Brown). We're not totally sure who else is going to be there, but we wouldn't rule out Flying Lotus himself making an appearance. Tickets for that one are still available.

FlyLo will also be at SXSW for both Flying Lotus shows and Captain Murphy (his rap alter ago) shows. As mentioned earlier today, some of those Captain Murphy shows are collaborative sets with Earl Sweatshirt.

All Flying Lotus dates are listed, along with a live video, below...

The Underachievers
Underachievers

The 2013 BrooklynVegan official SXSW showcase (the one that isn't a metal show or a Red Cross Syria benefit) will take place on Friday, March 15 at Maggie Mae's Rooftop (323 E. 6th Street in Austin, TX). SXSW badges are welcome, and we'll also have some general admission tickets for sale at the door (come early!).

The lineup this year, as you can see in the flyer below, leans toward the dancier side of things, with a headlining 1 AM set from Orlando downtempo artist XXYYXX, who was recently in NYC for two sold out shows at 285 Kent. Before him, there will be sets by 3421, who are bringing their live-band dubstep over to Austin all the way from Israel, a set by manic NYC rapper Mykki Blanco, electro-shoegazers Man Without Country, R&B-indebted producer Giraffage, Brainfeeder-affiliated rappers The Underachievers (whose free mixtape, Indigoism, is out now), the synth pop of Pictureplane, rapper/stripper/Grimes collaborator Brooke Candy, and finally, Zebra Katz, who you know best for "Ima Read.". Though (the show is in a week), it didn't all finally fall in place until last minute, this one was fun to put together.

To make it even more of a party, we'll have wearable "social lighting" available courtesy of Illuminode. The lights, which people will get to try on when they walk in the door, sync with the music (first come, first served on those, but you can always grab one when someone returns theirs too).

The show begins at 8 PM and as noted above is one of three official BrooklynVegan nighttime events at SXSW, including the one the same night with Omar Souleyman, Black Lips, Deer Tick, and more; and the official BrooklynVegan/Invisible Oranges metal showcase on Saturday (3/16) with Pallbearer, John Baizley (Baroness), and more. We also have four days of day parties (March 13-16, full lineups coming soon!).

As is usually the case with SXSW, many of the bands on our showcase are stopping by NYC for shows before and after SXSW also. As mentioned, 3421 plays Mercury Lounge on 3/20, Man Without Country plays Pianos (tonight, 3/7) and Knitting Factory (3/9), Giraffage plays 88 Palace on 3/9 with JETS. And Mykki Blanco and Pictureplane always have stuff going on in the area too.

See you in Austin.

Flying Lotus at Le Poisson Rouge in 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Flying Lotus

As mentioned, most of the shows in the upcoming Red Bull Music Academy NYC series went on sale today, but RBMA have just added another huge show to that list. Brainfeeder head Flying Lotus will be headlining Terminal 5 on May 5 with collaborator Thundercat (something those two have done before). Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (3/8) at noon.

And because the Brainfeeder crew can't come to NYC for just one show, they're also doing a Red Bull Music Academy-presented Brainfeeder Session at Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 30 with special guest DJ Low Down Loretta Brown (aka Erykah Badu). Knowing Brainfeeder, it wouldn't be surprising of other members of the crew show up to that too. Tickets for the MHOW show are on sale now.

In related news, FACT reports that Flying Lotus will be contributing to the new album by drum & bass legend Goldie, along with Burial and Photek.

In more Brainfeeder news, Lapalux, who has some impressive EPs out on the label, will release his debut full length, Nostalchic, on March 26. You can stream two tracks from that album, "Guuurl" and "Forlorn" (feat. Busdriver), below.

Those streams and a list of all Flying Lotus dates, including SXSW, below...

Joey Bada$$
Joey Bada$$

Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ has announced the international "Beast Coast Tour" with fellow Beast Coast associates Flatbush Zombies and The Underachievers, which kicks off in Austin at SXSW and continues into early May. The tour hits NYC on April 20 at Gramercy Theater (note: the date has been announced as 4/21 in other places, but as you can see on Live Nation, the venue is hosting Paganfest USA that day) (UPDATE: The show has been moved to 4/18.)

Tickets for that show are not on sale yet, but you can check Ticketmaster for updates. You may remember that all three artists on the tour previously teamed up in NYC for a Red Bull Music Academy/Boiler Room show in October during Flying Lotus' NYC takeover.

Before SXSW, Joey's crew Pro Era is playing a NYC show billed as CJ Fly & Pro Era at Public Assembly on March 6 with Wordspit, Dyme-A-Duzin, and many others. Tickets for that show are on sale now. No official word on whether or not Joey will be there, but he hates when people say "Joey Bada$$ and Pro Era", so maybe the CJ Fly (another Pro Era member) billing is meant as a play on that? The flyer for this show is below.

When the tour ends, Joey has a few festival dates scheduled, including The Roots Picnic in Philly. All dates are listed below.

Joey Bada$$ has been dropping tracks and videos left and right lately. Back in January, he released his single for Mountain Dew's Green Label Sound, which was a collaboration with DJ Premier called "Unorthodox." Then he followed that with a video with Smoke DZA for "Gotham Fucking City" off DZA's K.O.N.Y. tape, a diss track aimed at Lil B (in response to Lil B's diss to him), and another video with Smoke DZA, which also features Big K.R.I.T., for "Underground Airplay" off the Ecko Unlimited mixtape of the same name. You can stream/watch all of those songs/videos below.

Indigoism

Meanwhile, The Underachievers just released the free Indiogism mixtape on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label. You can download the mixtape for free at DatPiff and stream it in its entirety below.

Captain Murphy aka Flying Lotus
Flying Lotus

If you aren't already familiar with new rapper Captain Murphy, who first appeared on the Adult Swim single, "Between Friends" with Flying Lotus and Earl Sweatshirt, he had been keeping his identity concealed but many rumors circulated that Captain Murphy was the rapper alter ego of FlyLo himself, or a member of Odd Future. He released his impressive debut mixtape, Duality, as one long audio file in a video (which you can watch below) but has since released a deluxe edition with the tracks separated and bonus material, which you can download for free HERE. Most of the mixtape was produced by Flying Lotus and also included production from Brainfeeder producers Jeremiah Jae, Samiyam, and Teebs, plus hip hop production greats Madlib and Just Blaze, and a beat by upcoming duo TNGHT. The full tracklist is below.

If you've been following along with all the Captain Murphy insanity, you may know that he made his live debut last night (11/28) in LA at The Airliner. And as you can see in the picture above from the show, Captain Murphy is in fact Flying Lotus (via Complex). FlyLo has since taken to twitter to comment on the identity revealing.

Mixtape video and tracklist below...

Flying Lotus @ Terminal 5, 10/7/2012
Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus wrapped up his NYC takeover on Wednesday with the Brainfeeder showcase at Villain. That showcase was headlined by The Gaslamp Killer, who was supporting his new album, Breatkthrough, and it also featured Martyn, Dorian Concept, Jeremiah Jae, Taylor McFerrin, and The Underachievers. FlyLo didn't play a set but he was in attendance and you can see him on stage with Gaslamp Killer, along with other pictures from the showcase, below.

The NYC takeover also featured a "Meet the Musician" event at Apple Store SoHo, a Boiler Room set, an appearance at Warp's booth at the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair, and a sold out headlining show at Terminal 5 on 10/7 with members of his Brainfeeder crew in tow (including opener Thundercat). Pics from the T5 show are in this post as well.

Flying Lotus will return to NYC during CMJ for a one-off at Le Poisson Rouge on October 17 with Death Grips, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Buke & Gase. That show is RSVPed out and we're not sure if they're taking any badges, but the show isn't listed on the CMJ schedule, so no promises.

With SBTRKT's show last night and FlyLo's show from Sunday, there's been no shortage of great electronic shows at Terminal 5 lately. Plus, shows coming up there include Major Lazer, Pictureplane, and Brenmar on 10/27 and Squarepusher, Bonobo, Holy Fuck, and Mount Kimbie on 11/1. More pics from FlyLo's T5 show and the Brainfeeder showcase at Villain are below.

Flying Lotus at Coachella 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus is about to welcome his new album, Until the Quiet Comes next week (10/2) via Warp. As the album title implies, it's a "quieter" record than the maximalist Cosmogramma, but it's just as fleshed out and compelling. You can stream the album ahead of its release date at NPR. The video for "Putty Boy Strut" can be watched below.

As mentioned, FlyLo will be supporting the album with a tour that hits NYC on October 7 at Terminal 5 with Thundercat and other Brainfeeder artists. Tickets for that show are still available. That's the first date club date on his tour, but he's since revealed that the tour will kick off with a "take over" of LA and NYC surrounding that date.

In NYC, he'll appear at the Warp booth at the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair on October 6, where he'll be signing copies of his new album. That's free and the booth will be open from 11 AM to 6 PM. The day after the T5 show, he'll play a Red Bull Music Academy Takeover for Boiler Room NYC (10/8) with a great lineup of Questlove, Flatbush Zombies, Just Blaze, Joey Bada$$ & Pro Era, and The Underachievers. That show is guest list only but you can watch it live at boilerroom.tv. On October 9 he'll partake in the "Meet the Musician" series at Apple Store SoHo where he'll give a talk and also perform. That show runs from 6-8 PM and is free but space is very limited.

Lastly, he'll do two events on October 10, including the East Village Radio Takeover, where Flying Lotus and Brainfeeder artists Gaslamp Killer, Martyn, Dorian Concept, Jeremiah Jae, Taylor McFerrin, and The Underachievers will take over two hours of air time on East Village Radio from 2-4 PM to preview their showcase which happens later that night at new Brooklyn venue Villain (50 North 3 St). That show is also presented by the Red Bull Music Academy and features the same lineup (UPDATE: FlyLo is not confirmed) as the radio takeover plus "very special guests." No ticket info for this show at the moment.

An updated list of Flying Lotus dates and the video for "Putty Boy Strut" are below.

Teebs
Teebs

Brainfeeder producer Teebs, who toured earlier this year and played Santos in March, has a few upcoming shows for the remainder of this year including another in NYC which happens on November 2 at Glasslands with The Mast, Jacob 2-2, and Oddlogic. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All Teebs dates are listed below.

Speaking of Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus is releasing his new album, Until the Quiet Comes, on October 2 and he just revealed the video for album track, "Putty Boy Strut." You can watch that video below.

In more Brainfeeder news, The Gaslamp Killer released his debut full length, Breakthrough, this week on the label. You can stream that entire album below via a spotify widget.

A list of all Teebs dates, the FlyLo video, and the Gaslamp Killer stream are below.

As I type this, Radiohead just opened their second Saturday night Coachella headlining set in a row with "Bloom". I wonder how/if their setlist will vary from last week (pics from last time HERE). We'll know soon (update: we know now).

Meanwhile, check out the video of Thom Yorke DJing the Coachella Brainfeeder party with Flying Lotus and Gaslamp Killer at Ace Hotel in Palm Springs last night (4/20), along with a video of Thom dancing during GK's set, below...

Teebs
Teebs

Brainfeeder beatsmith Teebs and Prefuse 73, who Teebs probably picked up a few tricks from along the way, have announced that they'll be putting a collaborative album out together under the name Sons of the Morning. Prefix points to a series of tweets between the two producers starting with Teebs tweeting, "@prefuse73 im in NY on the 30th...you home then ?" and Prefuse 73 responding, "@teebsio yup! I'm there! + this musical email is amazing. I gt the Other '5/5/2k12'. @teebsio + @ prefuse73 are: "SONS OF THE MORNING."

Meanwhile, the reason that Teebs will be in NY today (3/30) is because his North American tour with Sonnymoon and Time Wharp is hitting Santos Party House TONIGHT (3/30). Doors are at 9 PM and tickets are $10 at the door. To promote the tour, the three producers made a "collaborative mix featuring recently released tracks from Teebs, Sonnymoon, & Time Wharp, as well as support acts, personal favorites, and remixes." Download that above or stream it below along with the tracklist, and a the tour flier.

All dates, mix, and flier below...

DOWNLOAD: Martyn - "Viper" (MP3)

Martyn

Martyn began DJ and promoting d&b nights in Holland as far back as 1996, but it was as recent as three years ago that his production began to be recognised. He had releases on Marcus Intalex's Revolv:R, both d&b and dubstep-- fitting since Marcus Intalex released one of the first deep house inspired dubstep-esque singles "Taking Over Me" as far back as 2000. But while Martyn bought into early Wookie material, it wasn't until Kode9's "Sine of the Dub" that Martyn took notice of dubstep. "I heard that record and it fitted right into some of the music I was hunting down at that time such as the reggae/techno from Berlin like Rhythm & Sound, Main Street and Basic Channel," he explains. [Pitchfork]
Martyn released his second LP, Ghost People, last month via FlyLo's Brainfeeder label. The album is full of hollow dubstep beats in the vein of Kode9, who is mentioned above as one of Martyn's influences, and features guest vocals on the first track by Spaceape, who collaborated with Kode9 in 2006 for the pioneering Memories of the Future album, and again earlier this year on the duo's followup, Black Sun. But what really makes Ghost People a memorable listen is the way he works in his house influences. He can come out sounding like a better version of Deadmau5's early material (before he began taking a much frattier direction). The songs layer four-on-the-floor beats with more off-kilter ones and almost always use percussion in the forefront of the song, with a sparse melody in the background. The one exception is the album's especially house-y closing track, "We Are You In The Future," which opens with a catchy bouncing synth line that gets built off for almost 9 minutes, and is by far the longest track on the album. The album track "Viper" is available for download above.

Martyn's only got one North American date coming up and its The FIXED Holiday Bash at Public Assembly on December 16 with Jonas Reinhardt (live), Andrew "The Wiz" Potter, Ulysses, JDH & Dave P, and a back room hosted by Throne of Blood. Tickets for the show are on sale now.

All dates below...

Stones Throw

Via the Vine:

Electronic musician Flying Lotus--aka Steve Ellison--is no stranger to the world of Radiohead. Not only did Thom Yorke guest on the producer's critical-fave of last year, Cosmogramma, the Radiohead frontman took Ellison on tour as a guest of his then-touring side project Atoms For Peace. Flying Lotus' influence hangs heavy over the "free jazz, cut-n-paste" approach of Radiohead's most recent album The King of Limbs, and just last week, Yorke turned up at a club in downton LA to mix side-by-side with Ellison.

So it comes as little surprise to hear that Flying Lotus claims that he has been tapped to remix the King of Limbs, according to an interview in the Colorado Springs Independent:

Indy: [Thom Yorke] was also on your last album. Are there any more collaborations like that in the works?

FL: Not that I know of. They wanted me to remix the new Radiohead record, and I've been trying to mess with that a little bit. But I haven't gotten to it yet.

Indy: Tell us what that'll sound like when you're done with it?

FL: It's too early to say, man. I have no fucking clue. It's difficult to work with, because the pieces that they gave me, there's no real a cappella. It's like piano and voice at the same time.

Indy: So you can't separate them.

FL: No, I can't. So I have to come up with some shit that's a little similar to the record, I guess, to an extent.

While we wait for that, check out the latest free Stones Throw podcast, mixed by none other than Flying Lotus. Cover art above.

Flying Lotus's next live date is the Sasquach Festival, and in June he will headline a pair of Brainfeeder showcases (his label) in NYC. They take place at Bowery Ballroom on 6/20 and Music Hall of Williamsburg on 6/22 with appearances from labelmates Thundercat, Austin Peralta, Teebs, and Dr. Strangeloop. Tickets for both shows just went on sale

In related news, Gaslamp Killer and Matthewdavid, both of which have releases on Brainfeeder, will play a show together at Knitting Factory on 5/28 (tickets). A few days later, Matthewdavid will join Sun Araw Band at 285 Kent.

The Cool Kids @ Highline Ballroom (More by Leia Jospe)
The Cool Kids

On some level, yes, perhaps this was inevitable. But after many locals realizing it for some time now, it seems that the Chicago-based hip-hop duo The Cool Kids--or more likely, the people who represent them--have finally been hipped to the fact that, here in [Dallas Forth Worth], there exists a lo-fi punk outfit by the name of the Teenage Cool Kids. And, as such, the Cool Kids' handlers have sent Teenage Cool Kids a cease and desist order, asking that the band change its name. [Dallas Observer]
Looks like somebody lost their cool (ZING!)....

In related news, The Cool Kids AND KOOL Keith (will they go after him too?) are part of the recently announced All Points West lineup. Both Cool & Kool play on Saturday Aug 1st... that's the NON-Beastie Boys / Q-Tip / Pharcyde / Organized Konfusion (!!!!!)/ Flying Lotus day (which is Friday, July 31).

Kool Keith will also appear at the Gramercy Theatre in NYC on April 3rd, but this time as Dr Octagon vs Dr Doom. All dates below.

Organized KonfusionAnd probably the most exciting news (to me anyway) out of the APW lineup is the reformation of the mighty Organized Konfusion! The crew released their last LP in 1997, The Equinox which was proceeded by the classic self-titled and Stress: The Extinction Agenda LPs. Since then, Pharoahe Monch has been busy with his own ventures including writing rhymes for certain millionaires and showing up to support his friends The Roots at Highline Ballroom. Prince Po hasn't exactly sat idle either... his last album, The Saga Of The Simian Samurai dropped in 2007. Some videos below.

In other APW-playing, hip hop artist news, Q-Tip who always keeps busy performing (most recently on tour with the Cool Kids) and spinning, will be gettin' down at the 92nd St Y in Tribeca, James Lipton style:

Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg hosts a night of music and conversation featuring famed hip-hop musician and producer Q-Tip, a member of the legendary band A Tribe Called Quest. Rosenberg will sit down with Q-Tip for a candid discussion about the life and influences of this innovative artist, whose career has spanned over 20 years. Jazz hip-hop fusion band Igmar Thomas and The Cypher will perform throughout the night, paying tribute to Q-Tip's music.
Tickets are on sale.

Beastie Boys recently reissued (deluxe style) Check Your Head, and have been announcing lots of festival appearances for this summer.

And finally, Flying Lotus (the "experimental music producer, disc jockey, and laptop musician from Winnetka, California") will be in NYC before before All Points West, including two dates in the next month - April 16th and 17th. On April 16th, Flying Lotus will join Kode9, Martyn, Mike Slott, Pursuit Grooves, Ras_G, and Zomby as part of Brainfeeder NYC (Part 1) at Love, a showcase for Flying Lotus's all-digital label Brainfeeder. The next day look for Flying Lotus and Kode9 to play the American Museum of Natural History as part of The Fader Presents One Step Beyond (advance tickets are available).
