Kitsuné has been been putting out compilations since 2002 with a wide range of international dancepop artists. Recently they began doing Kitsuné AMERICA comps as well, and the third of those will be out June 3 featuring new cuts from Brenmar, Kelela, Lawrence Rothman, Son Lux, Jerome LOL, Heartsrevolution and more. We've got the premiere of Kitsuné AMERCIA 3's ethereal closing track, "Speak" by Seattle duo NAVVI. You can stream it below.

For those in Los Angeles and at Coachella, Maison Kitsuné has taken over the iconic Roosevelt Hotel with a pop-up store that's open through April 21. Additionaly, Kitsuné has events this weekend at clubs on Hollywood Blvd. Jupiter, Prince Language and Kindness play the Kitsuné Club Night @ Teddy's on Friday (4/18) and then there's a Kitsuné Pool Party @ Tropicana Pool on Sunday afternoon with a DJ set from Kilo Kish, a performance by Eli & Fur and another "Very Special Guest." You can RSVP for those.

Meanwhile, Lawrence Rothman will open for Little Dragon on ten dates of their North American tour, including both shows at NYC's Terminal 5 on June 20 & 21. Tickets for 6/20 are sold out, but you can still get tickets for the 6/21 show. Rothman will be doing something a little different with these shows. From the press release:

In keeping with his haunting psyche and series of thought provoking, Floria Sigismondi-directed videos, Lawrence will supplement his musical offerings with an embodiment of a wholly different character each night.
Rothman, by the way, is Sigismondi's husband and used to front The Living Things. I caught one of his SXSW shows and I don't know if he was doing a character that night but the name that crossed my mind was "Rick Astley," a vastly different show than the one I saw at Glasslands last year. (In both cases, he's got a powerful set of pipes and puts a lot of effort into his performance.) So if you're at one of the Little Dragon shows and wondering what the hell is going on with the opener, now you know.

All Lawrence Rothman dates are listed, along with the NAVVI stream and Kitsuné AMERICA 3 tracklist and pop-up store flyer, below...

Le1f at Afro-Punk Fest 2013 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Le1f

Future-rapper Le1f, who just joined his pal Blood Orange at 285 Kent last week (11/15), will be over in Australia this December for a couple festivals, including Slanted and Enchanted and Meredith Music Fest. But upon returning home, he'll do a NYC show just before the new year at Brooklyn Bowl on December 28. Tickets for that show are on sale now, and special guests TBA. It's his only announced US date at the moment.

Le1f also appears, along with likeminded rapper Mykki Blanco, on UNO-affiliated R&B singer Ian Isiah's new mixtape, The Love Champion. Japandroids @ MHOW, June 2012 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Japandroids

Check out our new NYC shows calendar.

Governors Ball continues today on Randall's Island with sets from Japandroids, Kendrick Lamar, Alt-J, Fucked Up, Animal Collective, and more. One of the biggest conflicts of the night is Guns N' Roses vs Nas, who both play at 9:30, but depending on how late GNR end up being, maybe you can catch both. The weather is also looking a lot better today, but  bring rubber boots for that giant mud swamp that will not be drying up anytime soon.

The other big show tonight is Paul McCartney, who will be making his Barclays Center debut tonight (his first of two shows), in the middle of a very solid month of music at The House That Jay-Z Built. (The National and Youth Lagoon played on Wednesday and The Postal Service will play two nights at the venue later this month). Unlike The National, Paul McCartney is not expected to play any intimate or secret shows while in town, but we would love to hear a six-hour version of any of his Beatles songs (okay, maybe "Band On The Run" wouldn't be so bad either).

The weather, apart from a chance of storms early in the afternoon, but if you're looking for Summer Thunder of a more pleasing kind, that's also the name of the free afternoon parties Union Pool will be throwing every Saturday during June, July and August. Today its being presented by BrooklynVegan (hey that's us!) and features Heavy Blanket, the instrumental "psychedelic blues jam" band featuring Dinosaur Jr.'s J. Mascis. Also playing are long-running indie rockers Love as Laughter. The fun starts at 2 PM with Love as Laughter on at 3:30 PM and Heavy Blanket at 5 PM.

If you're in Williamsburg for Summer Thunder, do stop by the annual Crest Hardware Art Show that kicks off today with Crest Fest '13 that has bands playing too. It's just a couple blocks from Union Pool and is free, all-ages and open to the public. 1 PM - 8 PM.

Elsewhere in the neighborhood, Brisk Bodega, an all day hip-hop showcase last seen at SXSW, will be making its NYC debut today with an all-day event in Williamsburg at 50 N. 3rd St. (at Wythe) starting at 2pm, with a slightly more electronic twist than its previous variations, featuring Just BlazeBrenmar, DJ Slink, RoofeeoHD of The Good Kids and more.

Crocodiles at 4Knots 2013 (more by Chris La Putt)
Crocodiles

Later tonight at Union Pool it's Crocodiles who you might have seen last night opening for Japandroids at the Governors Ball afterparty at Music Hall of Williamsburg. The band's new album, Crimes of Passion, is out in August and is their poppiest and most musically diverse yet. And maybe their best. Opening is drag review Chez Deep which will probably confuse a few people. Tickets are still available.

Haim, who recently won BBC's "Sound of 2013," are be in town for Governor's Ball this weekend. If you want to check them out but don't feel like walking through the mud or paying $100, they will be playing a Governor's Ball afterparty at the dry and indoors Brooklyn Bowl tonight for only $15, with Swedish electropop collective Kate Boy. Advance tickets are sold out but there's "limited admission at the door" so get there early if you wanna go. The show is also one-tenth the price of Guns N' Roses' show at the same venue  Thursday, but features the same chance of a Slash guest appearance.

If you ware looking to stay away from the arena show/major festival scene today, there are also some great smaller shows, most notably Radical Dads (who played Grand Victory last night and are about to go on a Japanese Tour) and poppier buddies The Hairs and Hippy over at Cake Shop tonight.

Or you could check out electro duo ADULT. who are back with their first new album in six years, and they'll be taking their tour in support of it to NYC for a show at 285 Kent tonight (tickets). Support is pretty great too, coming from Black Marble, You, and Eraas, the latter two of who will soon open for Martin Rev of Suicide.

Avant-garde saxist/artist director of Manhattan venue The Stone John Zorn is playing one of his many upcoming Le Poisson Rouge shows tonight. For tonight's show he'll be performing as a trio with Bill Laswell and Milford Graves.

Earl Sweatshirt
Earl Sweatshirt

Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt will be making his SXSW debut this year (he wasn't there when the rest of his crew first played), and will be doing collaborative sets with Captain Murphy, aka Flying Lotus' rap alter ego (who collaborated with him on "Between Friends"). Those sets include the Life or Death showcase on Wednesday (3/13) at Scoot Inn at midnight, the Green Label Sound showcase on Friday (3/15) at Lucille at 9:30 PM, and FADER Fort on Saturday (3/16) at 6 PM. Flyers for all three of those shows with full lineups are below.

Earl just appeared at Flying Lotus' LA show at Low End Theory last week (3/7) and they performed three tracks off Earl's upcoming album, Doris, "Burgundy" (produced by Pharrell), "Hive," and "Guild." Mac Miller is featured on that last one and he was at the LA show too. You can check it all out in a video from the show, which is below. Also below is the video for previously released Doris track, "Chum," and Earl has another new video on the way too.

Earl's other upcoming dates include some festival appearances like Bonnaroo, Sasquatch!, and Coachella. All dates are listed, along with those flyers and videos, below...

Salva at BEMF 2012 (more by Oliver Correa & Amanda Rohowsky / HiFi Cartel)
Salva

LA producer Salva released the impressive Complex Housing LP and Yellobone EP back in 2011, and he's been spending most of this past year playing shows and dropping remixes, like his remix of Kanye's "Mercy" with RL Grime, which you can stream below. Now Salva is set to return with a new EP in 2013 called Odd Furniture, which comes out on February 12 via Friends of Friends. The cover art and tracklist are below.

Salva will be supporting the EP with a North American tour that includes dates with Brenmar, Lunice, Shlohmo, and Daedelus, the latter of who is on board for Salva's NYC show which happens on March 2 at Le Poisson Rouge. Tickets for that show are not on sale yet but check LPR's site for updates.

Daedelus also recently released an EP, Looking Ocean, which came out via Scion/AV. You can download that EP for free below.

art basel

From December 6 through 9, Miami Beach, Florida, will host the 11th edition of Art Basel, the most prestigious art show in the Americas. More than 260 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa will take part, showcasing works by more than 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The exhibiting galleries are among the world's most respected art dealers, offering exceptional pieces by both renowned artists and cutting-edge newcomers. Special exhibition sections feature young galleries, performance art, public art projects and video art. The show will be a vital source for art lovers, allowing them to both discover new developments in contemporary art and experience rare museum-caliber artworks.

In addition to the official events of Art Basel in Miami, there are loads of parties going on throughout the city, including a Kurt Cobain tribute at Gusman Center for the Performing Arts on December 6 that includes an appearance by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and a 15 minute live dance performance based on the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video. More info is here.

Other music artists playing shows during or around Art Basel include Chromatics, Prince Rama, Nicolas Jaar, Purity Ring, Twin Shadow, Brenmar, Animal Collective, Flying Lotus, Dan Deacon, Hundred Waters, ITAL and Jacuzzi Boys. Paper Mag has a pretty good guide to some of it.

Some of those artists were set to play the UR1 Festival which was to run concurrent with Art Basel but was cancelled.

If you're going to Miami, we'd like to point out that BrooklynVegan photographer Dana (distortion) Yavin will be showing more than 26 prints of her mostly-BrooklynVegan concert photography (including Morrissey, Iggy Pop, Pearl Jam, Fiona Apple, Snoop Dogg, Madonna and more) in two different galleries, LMNT and OVERTURE, from December 4 - 9. A flyer for the show below has more details.

"#BEMF Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival
exceeding expectations after 1 set" - Schuyler Van Horn

Nicolas Jaar / Gold Panda @ MHOW, 11/10/2012
2012 Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival
2012 Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival

The 2012 Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival went down this past weekend (11/9-10) at Music Hall of Williamsburg, Glasslands, Cameo, Public Assembly, 285 Kent, and Brooklyn Bowl, with shows running until about 4 AM each night. A worthy alternative to people who don't like the excesses of major electronic festivals like Electric Zoo and Ultra Music Festival, BEMF has become one of the most forward thinking ones around. And this year may have been their best lineup yet with some great names in IDM, downtempo, post-dubstep, deep house, instrumental hip hop, and more like Nicolas Jaar, Gold Panda, Photek, Nguzunguzu, Kingdom, Mykki Blanco, Salva, Shlohmo, and many others.

N. 6th St. in Williamsburg was flooded with people, likely due to having Public Assembly right next to Music Hall of Williamsburg which is just down the street from Cameo, and the ticket pickup tent in the parking lot across the street. (Not that N6 isn't a madhouse anyway on the weekends.) But also very likely that on Saturday night it was due to one of the festival's most in-demand acts, Nicolas Jaar, whose set was pushed back from 1 AM to 2:30 AM after the last-minute addition of Dave P. Ashley from Et Musique Pour Tous wrote, "I've never seen Music Hall of Williamsburg as crowded as it was last night. For the first half hour of Nicolas Jaar's hour and a half long set, nobody could move, and dancing was an intimate experience to be shared with strangers." Hazel Sheffield call his set "precocious," writing:

He turned the chorus from Cat Power's 'Cherokee' - "Marry me, marry me to the sky," - into a slowburning, plaintive swirl of a lyric, then slipped the clanging chords from Dave McCallum's 'The Edge', best known as the opening sample on Dre's 'Next Episode', into an interlude, sending people wild for about two seconds, before they realised the joke was on them. Precocious, then. But completely absorbing.
He also wrote that "not all of the acts at BEMF were so wilfully subversive," and that some of the DJs like Salva, who played Public Assembly on Saturday, kept things on the more in-your-face dancey side.

More pictures from the festival below.

FaltyDL - 'Hardcourage'
FaltyDL

As mentioned, FaltyDL has been at work on his new album, Hardcourage, which features the single "Straight & Arrow." Details on the album have surfaced and we now know that it comes out on January 22 via Ninja Tune. That's the awesome cover art above [very Barney Bubbles - Bill] and the tracklist, including "She Sleeps," a collaboration with Friendly Fires' Ed Macfarlane, is below. The "Straight & Arrow" single comes out next week (11/13) via Ninja Tune and features remixes by Four Tet, Gold Panda, and MikeQ & Divoli S'vere. FaltyDL also just revealed the video for that track, which you can watch below.

As mentioned, FaltyDL will play Webster Hall on December 7 with Skream, but you can catch him in NYC sooner than that because he's been added to the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival, which happens this Friday (11/9) and Saturday (11/10). FaltyDL plays Cameo Gallery on Saturday with Pearson Sound, Benji B, and Ki:Theory.

Since we last spoke, the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival has revealed more of its schedule (some of it is still TBA though). You already know that Music Hall of Williamsburg is hosting Gold Panda and Photek on Friday and Nicolas Jaar and Nick Hook on Saturday. In addition to Cameo's aforementioned Saturday lineup, on Friday they have Metro Area, Braille, Brenmar, Mykki Blanco, and Mess Kid. Glasslands has Kingdom, Nguzunguzu, Jam City, MikeQ, and Rizzla on Friday, and Baths, XXYYXX, Hiawatha, and ShadowBox on Saturday. Rustie

We've mentioned a few times that Scottish beatmaker Rustie, who released his great debut LP, Glass Swords, last year on Warp, will be in NYC to play Warm Up at MoMA PS1 on September 8 with Thom Yorke/Atoms for Peace (DJ set), Holy Other, Maria Minerva, and Justin Strauss (tickets). Now Rustie has revealed that the show is part of a short tour that Rustie will be on, which also includes a show at Webster Hall on September 7 for a Girls & Boys party with Flosstradamus and Brenmar. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All Rustie tour dates are listed below.

Rustie also recently teamed up with Aluna Francis, the vocalist of UK R&B duo AlunaGeorge (who put out the great You Know You Like It EP earlier this year) to give vocal treatment to the track "After Light" from his Glass Swords LP. The dubstep meets cool-R&B approach of the collaboration hits a similar spot that SBTRTK's vocal collabs do, and if Rustie continues in that direction he may end up as massive -- especially if there's enough demand for his Webster Hall show (you'll remember that his last NYC gig was at the much smaller Santos Party House). Rustie did a similar reworking of his album track "Surph" earlier this year, when Nightwave added vocals to the song.

Streams of the vocal-assisted versions of "After Light" and "Surph," and a list of all dates are below.

LOL Boys

As mentioned, Bass Squad are hosting the "On the Rocks" summer residency at Drom, which kicked off in May with Baauer and Flosstradamus, continued in June with Nicky Da B and Heartbreak, and in July with Kingdom and Sleepyhead. The August party at Drom goes down tonight (8/2) with LOL Boys, Sound Pellegrino, Thermal Team, Sleepyhead, Crisp, and Alex English. It's a 21+ party, $15 admission, and runs from 10 PM to 4 AM. The flier for tonight's show is below.

LOL Boys just released their Changes EP, which includes four original songs and remixes of the title track by Shlohmo and Anenon. Though it's a little hard to their name seriously, LOL Boys' music is a different story. The new EP works as the chill, sunny afternoon cousin of the ghostly Shlohmo, who they've shared multiple bills with. All vocals on the album (though heavily manipulated) were performed live by guest singers Heart Streets and Angelina Lucero. You can stream the EP in full below or purchase it for $6 on bandcamp.

Speaking of Bass Squad, they're also doing a show at Slate on August 30 with Brenmar (who plays NYC tonight), Sinjin Hawke (who plays NYC twice on Saturday [8/4]), and XXYYXX.

Flier for tonight's show, the LOL Boys EP stream and a list of all dates below...

Aesop Rock at McCarren Pool in 2008 (more by Jason Bergman)
Aesop Rock

Homeboy Sandman is set to release his first full length album on Stones Throw, First Of A Living Breed, which is due out on the label on September 18. The first single, "Watchu Want From Me," was produced by Oddisee and you can download it above or stream it below. The cover art and tracklist are below too.

Homeboy Sandman will be supporting the album on a tour with Brother Ali that hits NYC on September 27 at Bowery Ballroom (tickets), but before that both he and Oddisee will play a FREE day show in NYC TODAY (8/2) at Public Assembly with Immortal Technique and Tru Fam for a Last.fm filming. Doors are at 2 PM, the show is completely free and open to the public, no guest list.

If you stick around the Brooklyn venue, there will also be a hip hop DJ dance party at Public Assembly tonight (8/2) with Da Beatminerz and X-Ecutioners. Tickets for tonight's show are available.

In addition to those two Public Assembly shows, there's tons of other good hip hop shows going down in NYC tonight and this weekend. JSpace.com is throwing 'The Ultimate College Bar Mitzvah" at Highline Ballroom tonight (8/2) with sets from Talib Kweli, The Higher Concept, and The Rooks. It's a bit of an unusual show though. Highline's site reads, "This is THE event for all interns and college students in the New York area. Rock your college swag, bust some moves, and come ready to have a great time. From 8-9PM, professionals from large corporations will work the room, looking to meet college students." Tickets for the show are available.

Tonight's Bowl Train at Brooklyn Bowl (8/2), which is usually DJed by Questlove, will instead by DJed by Biz Markie. Tickets are available.

Nina Sky have a new album/mixtape out this week (7/31) called Nicole and Natalie (the actual first names of the twins that make up the duo), which you can download in full above or stream below. The track "Comatose" was produced by Brenmar, who Nina Sky will share a bill with in NYC tonight (8/2) at the Studio at Webster Hall. Chippy Nonstop, Roxy Cottontail, and Ferrari Snowday are on the bill too. TIckets for that show are available.

Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q's tour supporting Wiz Khalifa hits Jones Beach tonight (8/2). Tickets for that are still available. As mentioned, Kendrick will return to NYC on his tour which hits Terminal 5 on September 15 and Schoolboy Q will when his tour with A$AP Rocky and Danny Brown hits NYC on September 27 at Roseland Ballroom. Laurel Halo
Laurel Halo

Brooklyn's Laurel Halo released her excellent new album, Quarantine, earlier this month and recently finished up a European tour in support of it. Now that she's back home, she's already begun scheduling local shows, including a Quarantine release party at 285 Kent on June 30 with Gatekeeper, Slava, Anenon, Wish, and DJ sets by Brenmar and Teengirl Fantasy, whose new album Laurel guests on. Tickets for that show are available.

Laurel Halo has another Brooklyn show set to take place on July 21 on Public Assembly with a great local bill of Pete Swanson, Noveller, and Burning Star Core (aka C. Spencer Yeh). As usual, New Yorkers will get plenty of more chances to catch Noveller, like at Entwine on Thursday (6/28) and at Secret Project Robot on August 4, but for Pete Swanson (ex-Yellow Swans), he's saying the Public Assembly show is likely his last NYC show for 2012. If you've yet to hear his new album, Man With Potential, you can stream it below.

Speaking of Gatekeeper, who play the 285 Kent show, they'll release their debut full length, Exo, on July 17 via Hippos in Tanks, along with an accompanying video game. Gatekeeper will celebrate Exo with a record release show in Brooklyn at Public Assembly on July 27. Thunder Horse FX will be doing visuals for their set and the bill also includes Total Freedom, James Ferraro, Yen Tech and Arca. Tickets for that show are on sale now. The show flier and Exo cover art/tracklist are below.

Jamie xx
jamiexx.jpg

Jamie xx (of The xx) is DJing at Le Poisson Rouge tonight (8/1) with Brenmar. LPR's site also lists a special guest for tonight's show. That guest is Girl Unit, who, like Jamie, makes ambient dubstep beats in their shared hometown of London. Tickets for tonight's show are still on sale. UPDATE: Jamie xx has cancelled due to visa issues. It's unclear if the event will still happen without him.. The event will still happen and it's now free (still no Jamie though).

In related news, "Over the coming weeks, Jamie xx will collaborate with multimedia artist Quayola, whom he has long admired. Their work will culminate in an original and immersive audiovisual live music experience titled 'Structures', housed in a carefully chosen venue... an event not to be missed." If you're in the UK and want to try and attend, more info is at Rizlab.

Girl Unit is finishing up a short North American tour which also hit Osheaga in Montreal last weekend. Tonight's LPR show is one of a few August dates for Brenmar who plays another NYC show on August 12 at Brooklyn Bowl with Dillon Francis. Tickets are on sale now. Jamie xx has a bunch of other appearances coming up too, though no more in the US. The xx are hopefully working on a new album.
