NXNE 2013, Day 3

We already posted pictures of the Mikal Cronin/Shannon & the Clams show from day 3 (6/15) of Toronto festival NXNE, and that same day we also caught Mikal on the annual M for Montreal / Panache Bruise Cruise during NXNE with Toronto locals Odonis Odonis, Montreal's We Are Wolves, and rapper Fat Tony (who also played Yonge-Dundas Square). PIctures from that Bruise Cruise are in this post.

Mikal Cronin and Fat Tony both play NYC soon too.

Mikal Cronin is currently in NYC and will be playing live at the Pitchfork offices at 3 PM today (6/19) which will be webcast live. WATCH IT BELOW.

Milk Music/Fat Tony/The Blind Shake @ Bruise Cruise, Austin, TX, 3/10/2013
Milk Music
Fat Tony
Blind Shake

Though the music portion of SXSW isn't in full force yet, there are still some shows that have gone down, including yesterday's (3/10) Bruise Cruise with Milk Music, Fat Tony, The Blind Shake, and Outer Minds. Like Bruise Cruise lineups always tend to be, it was a good party-style way to kick off SXSW with three punkish bands and an energetic rapper to top things off. Pictures from that cruise are in this post.

All four bands have other SXSW shows coming up, and Milk Music will be at our Thursday day party on the outdoor stage with Cloud Nothings, METZ, The Spits, Death, Rough Francis, and Single Mothers. It's free with RSVP.

Fat Tony also just released the song "Hood Party," which features Kool A.D. (formerly of Das Racist) and Despot), and will appear on his new album, Smart Ass Black Boy, which is due out on June 11 via Young One Records. You can download that track above or stream it below.

The Bruise Cruise was thrown by booking agency Panache, who also has other upcoming SXSW shows too.

Ben Cook with Fucked Up at House of Vans (more by Chris La Putt)
Fucked Up

Pink Eye took to the [Brooklyn stage with his child on his shoulders before ripping through the recent opus David Comes to Life in its entirety. The energy comprised by this band is nearly unmatched by most other acts today. Aggressive vocals, lightning drumming, and shredding guitar blasts make up the concept masterpiece that unfolded live before the crowd tonight and just like sitting down to listen to this record (although I doubt many people remain sitting while this thing plays), the idea can be daunting. However, Fucked Up play with such precision and comradory that the monumental album seemed to go by in the blink of an eye. Aside from telling the audience to "give a thumbs up to anyone partaking in the protests", the onstage banter was kept to a minimal, allowing the brilliance of the band to shine through and through.-[omgnyc]
Fucked Up played their second show with Titus Andronicus Tuesday night at Warsaw (where the above review comes from). The first was at Le Poisson Rouge one night earlier. Both shows' focus was on the band's recent David Came to Life and included additional instrumentation above and beyond the usual five-piece hardcore unit.

Fucked Up is now apparently going on a bit of a hiatus meaning limited touring. We'll see how that plays out. For now they have upcoming shows in Australia and on the Bruise Cruise which recently added Mikal Cronin and Vockah Redu to the lineup. All dates are listed below.

In the meantime, Fucked Up's Ben Cook is gearing up to release a collection of songs with his garage-punk power pop band Marvelous Darlings. The Marvelous Darlings have a new LP of compiled 7" tracks in Single Life, out Nov 22 via Deranged Records. Download one track, "I Don't Wanna Go To THe Party" above and stream that LP in its entirety below alongside all Fucked Up tour dates and a recent F'd Up video for "Running on Nothing"...

Fucked Up at House of Vans in July (more by Chris La Putt)
Fucked Up

Bruise Cruise II, which will take place February 10-13, 2012 off the coast of Miami, added a few more artists to their lineup earlier this month. Those additions include Fucked Up, The Togas (feat. Ty Segall, Philip Sambol of The Strange Boys, Lance Wille of Reigning Sound, and Shannon Shaw of Shannon & the Clams), Vivian Girls (DJ set), and more to be announced soon. Tickets for the cruise are on sale now.

Bruise Cruise and Panache Booking (who co-founded the cruise) have a CMJ showcase scheduled too. The showcase will take place at Public Assembly on October 22 with Shonen Knife, Cheeseburger, White Fence, Vockah Redu, Turbo Fruits, Jacuzzi Boys. and others. Tickets for the showcase are on sale now, or you can try to get in with a CMJ badge.

Panache Booking are also doing their own showcase at Knitting Factory on October 20 with Matthewdavid (who plays Highline Ballroom with Dam-Funk 5 days later), Pterodactyl, Evi Antonio, Mike Viser, and The Immaculates. TIckets are on sale now.

Speaking of Fucked Up, who just played Webster Hall with Wavves, they've got a video for the song "Do You Feed" by the fictional band Animal Man, from Fucked Up's fictional compilation album. You can watch that below. You can also watch a video of Damian Abraham dancing on stage with Yo Gabba Gabba.

Ty Segall on a boat
BV Bruise Cruise

1.You can actually get kicked off the boat
Things got pretty rocking on the M for Montreal and Brooklyn Vegan Bruise Cruise Saturday afternoon [June 18th]. But we did find out a useful tidbit yesterday: you can actually get kicked off the boat. You'd think once you were in international waters, there wouldn't be a lot of law enforcement going on. But one dude came within an inch of getting booted off the boat for burning down one too many j's. Turns out security can actually call you a water taxi if you're being too naughty to escort you back to the dock. Or at least they can threaten do that. The guy threw his spliff over board before we got to see it actually happen.

2. Steve McDonald from Redd Kross/OFF is THE Steve
Midway through Ty Segall's set he started to call around for his friend "Steve" to come up and join him for a tune. Steve wasn't in the belly of boat though at the time, so every one started yelling "Steve" not really knowing who they were calling. Turns out it was Steve McDonald from the Redd Kross, who was in town with his band OFF! It was bit of a coincidence too because the last time I had seen him perform was with Redd Kross opening for the Lemonheads at the Opera House in 1993. I also got to see Evan Dando and Juliana Hatfield this weekend. So it was like a double-blast from the past.

That's two of the five things that Scott from the National Post learned at our boat party in Toronto during NXNE. More pictures from the water born show (though none of Uncle Bad Touch unfortunately), below...

Ty SEgall

Going to be in Toronto for NXNE this coming week? If so, make sure to RSVP for the free BrooklynVegan/M For Montreal 'Bruise Cruise' which is happening this Saturday, June 18th. The boat show will feature sets by Ty Segall, Young Governor (featuring Ben of Fucked Up), Uncle Bad Touch (featuring Mikey of Priestess), and Jesuslesfilles (who Bill liked at M For Montreal 2010). Not only is it free, NXNE badgeholders get free drinks too (other people can buy them). See the flyer below.

Ty Segall, who also plays three other NXNE shows before kicking off a tour as a member of Sic Alps, played the real Bruise Cruise earlier this year. Ty is not however on the lineup of Bruise Cruise 2012, but Thee Oh Sees, King Khan, The Soft Pack and many others are.

Our NXNE flyer is below....

Turbo Fruits
Bruise Cruise 2011

"Over the weekend, I see many other compelling images: Black Lips bassist Jared Swilley launching his instrument into the sea while shooting a music video. Surfer Blood singer John Paul Pitts hunting for a hot blackjack table. Former MTV News anchor John Norris, on assignment for noisevox, interviewing pool-bound members of Vivian Girls while a Fellini-esque cast of hipster paparazzi snap away on SLRs. And finally, in Nassau, four of the cruise's acts--Black Lips, Vivian Girls, The Strange Boys, and Turbo Fruits--playing to a crowd of Bruisers and fratboys and bachelorette partiers at the least punk rock establishment in any port of call in the entire Atlantic Ocean: Señor Frog's.

"I think a lot of people on this cruise hate us. I think they think we're gay," Swilley tells me on Sunday. "I was drunk last night walking through the hallway, I only had my underwear on, and some guy was like, 'Get back in your room, faggot!'" He points across the pool. "Some guy who looked like that guy, with the backward visor." [Washington City Paper]

Soul Clap

If you're just joining us, start with PART ONE before continuing on....

Saturday morning we all woke up in the Bahamas, hit the buffet and the pool before the next show, fueling up for a day on the beach and a night at Senor Frogs. Situated on deck chairs with coconuts in hand, two pro-surfers were up-and-at-em bright and early. Alek Parker and Dylan Graves were there to judge Jonathan Toubin's late-night Soul Clap party, along with John Norris, Ben Blackwell from the Dirtbombs and others. Parker and Graves set the tone and brought the party - and their bathrobes - to the Lido Deck.

The Vivian Girls held court poolside and Kickball Katy (aka Katy Goodman aka La Sera who plays NYC shows with Tennis this week) won the hearts and lots of hugs from all the kids on board. In their set on Saturday at Senor Frogs they sounded more confident and melodious than I'd ever seen them before, finally growing into their echo chamber garage sound, or maybe it was the fruity "yard long" drinks their biggest fan (seriously, he had a different Vivian Girls t-shirt for every day of the cruise) bought for each of them before the show. Watch out for a cameo from them in the forthcoming Black Lips video.

New Orleans based Quintron and Miss Pussycat closed out the Bruise Cruise with their psychedelic organ fest. Miss Pussycat brought along her absolutely delightful puppet show for that morning's "Pancakes and Puppets" breakfast. I didn't see enough of The Strange Boys - if they'd played just one more set I suspect they might have been my faves, but at least that means I have something to look forward to the next time they play New York. They were on the bill at Senor Frogs and I loved their jangly guitars, open sound and the tight and twisted vocals from Ryan Sambol. And ditto for Miami youngsters The Jacuzzi Boys who were loved by many, including John Dwyer from Thee Oh Sees. After all the bands had finished playing at Senor Frogs on Saturday, Dwyer grabbed his beer and said he was off to tell The Jacuzzi Boys "they were the best thing [he'd] seen at this thing."

Turbo Fruits

Ty Segall's one short set on Saturday before Thee Oh Sees wasn't enough - Ty Segall opened the festival on board the ship that day and played a restrained and somewhat shy set behind his curtain of hair. Someone commented that if they work on their stage presence one day they might grow up to be like Thee Oh Sees.

Everyone was curious how the Bruisers (aka the people there for the bands) would get along with the "normal' cruisers (who were also on the same ship) (Bruisers were given wristbands so the cruise staff knew they were allowed in the shows), and I'd like to think that we brought a little something-something to people's normal, regular vacation. Poolside at a photo shoot with Turbo Fruits (see above) one very nice lady asked me, completely unperturbed about the quadruple cannonball photo-op that splashed everyone, "Is that one of the bands on the Bruise Cruise?" I told her it was Turbo Fruits. "Oh, I've never heard of them," she said a little sadly, then she looked at the bright side, "But at least now I can tell people I saw them!"

You already saw one set of pictures. The rest of the pictures from the Bruise Cruise continue below...

Bruise Cruise 2011

You are all going to hate us. I fully expect the comments section to light up like the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center with all kinds of vitriolic bile and hummus inflected hatred, but you know what, we won't care because we had fun. Four hundred garage rock fans gathered from all over the world in Miami last Friday and boarded the Carnival Imagination cruise ship bound for the Bahamas, and had a giant party on the high seas full of fruity, candy-colored drinks, unlimited belly-busting buffets, hot tubs and music. Dazed hipsters and music fans wandered the Lido Deck in their jorts and tattoos, clutching their Hermann Hesse novels looking for a little shade poolside, while family vacationers stared and asked, "What's going on?" The [sold out] Bruise Cruise is what happened, and it was like summer camp for alcoholic indie rock fans, all who became friends by the end of the weekend.

Although they only played one blistering set at Senor Frogs on Saturday night in the Bahamas - if you don't count the pre-party in Miami on Thursday night, and we're choosing not to remember that horrible horrible place with the $8 beers - The Black Lips were like all the other bands' cooler older brothers. They stirred up their signature good-time chaos, drank more than everyone, partied harder, and managed to keep the peace all at the same time. Jared Swilley said he was looking forward to a weekend with no internet, no email, no computer, "I have our new album on my laptop, if I brought it with me I'd get drunk and start burning copies for everyone." Instead he tried to go down the waterslide in his underpants, where he was thwarted by a diminutive attendant who wouldn't let him on in his skivvies, despite pleas of, "This *is* my bathing suit! I'm European!" [In Beach Fossils fashion] he later threw his bass off the back of the ship during a clandestine music video shoot. Cole Alexander looked like he won big at the casino. And Ian St Pe jumped on a table with his guitar at the final dinner and was chased out of the formal dining room, only to return disguised in a baseball cap. Joe Bradley was scheduled to play piano at 2am on Sunday at the Mirage Piano Bar - "I'm really looking forward to that! I never get to play piano for people." - he showed up with pomaded hair and a tux and played a very dapper set, Maker's Mark in hand.

If The Black Lips were like older brothers, then Thee Oh Sees were the cooler older cousins who used to be troublemakers, but have settled down with nothing to prove because they've already proven themselves. John Dwyer and company may not have brought bathing suits, lounging poolside in jeans with beers in hand, but they were "mowing them down, cutting that spring grass!" as one "Bruiser" pointed out as they melted everyone's sun-addled minds on our final day at sea. Their first set early on Friday afternoon was just a warm-up. On Sunday early-evening, fueled by an open bar, they played the second to last set of the festival to a full gilded chrome ballroom. It might have been the best set we saw all weekend (admittedly I also heard someone say that about pretty much every set this weekend, but you know what, everything was pretty damn good). Drummer Mike Shoun said he was just trying to hit really really hard, and indeed he did, nearly coming off his drum stool more than once.

Ty Segall

Surfer Blood and their buddies (and festival co-organizers) Turbo Fruits teamed up for a Sunday brunch set in the - wait for it - Shangri La Lounge. Clutching danishes and mimosas some said Turbo Fruits, with lead singer Jonas Stein losing his voice, was the best set of the weekend (see above). I spent the cruise with Surfer Blood's janglier live version of the vaguely tropical "Take it Easy" on replay in my head, arguably the cruise's theme song. JP from Surfer Blood chatted with me after their sparsely attended first set on board on Saturday afternoon, as everyone jumped ship and rented scooters to hit the island (this may be the last time Surfer Blood play to a room of 30 people).

I asked what the band thought when they were asked to participate in the Bruise Cruise, "We thought it was a cool idea, and we thought it was either going to be really cool or a complete and total disaster. But if you think about it that's kind of like how ATP started in the UK. I mean they took over a holiday park or something. It was a little bit cheesy, a little bit family oriented and they turned it into, you know, like a total party. And they've been doing it forever." When we asked how they felt about their sparsely attended set on Saturday he said, "If I had to pick between seeing a young band we kind of like, or going out to explore the Bahamas, I'd be pretty torn. We're playing again tomorrow anyway."

More about "tomorrow" (and the rest of the cruise) coming soon. Pictures from the pre-party and the first day, continue below...

Quintron & Miss Pussycat

Studios are for suckers. From January 29th through May 2nd of last year, Quintron could be found at the New Orleans Museum of Art recording the new LP Sucre Du Sauvage. Quintron used the Museum to its full advantage, walking the grounds to make field recordings of wildlife, riffing in front of patrons and even roping some in for backing vocals, hand claps and other duties. When the time came to close up shop at NOMA, the record was finished and nothing was added/changed outisde of the original recordings. Check out two tracks from the record, "Elevator" and "Face Down in The Gutter", available for download above/streaming below and look for the album on April 12th via Goner Records.

So far Quintron & Miss Pussycat have no NYC dates scheduled for the near future, but the pair can be found on the now sold-out Bruise Cruise which departs from Miami on February 25th. Miss Pussycat recently made a promo video for the Bruise Cruise, and you can check that video out alongside all tour dates below. On and Quintron has promised, "Full Summer Tour with Wizzard Sleeve, Cave, and Jeff the Brotherhood Coming Soon!"

In related news, many of the participants of Bruise Cruise are touring and hitting NYC as well. Black Lips/Vivian Girls are going on the road together. Ty Segall is playing NYC twice. Surfer Blood is playing NYC and touring with Trail of Dead (though they aren't playing TOD's record release party at Littlefield).

Song streams, tour dates, and a video is below.

"On October 21st, 2010, Insound & Maker's Mark hosted an artist lounge & recording session at Stratosphere Sound in New York City, the likes of which has never been done before. Grammy winning engineer Geoff Sanoff (Nada Surf, Secret Machines, A Camp) took on the insane task of recording eight of indie music's most talked about new bands in eight hours, and the results are nothing but stellar." [Insound]
You'll be able to pick up those recorded tracks at Insound on 11/9, but first get a sneak preview of one of the three Surfer Blood tracks they're releasing, as a free download above,

And speaking of Surfer Blood, they've been added to Bruise Cruise...

Bruise Cruise is a rock 'n' roll music festival aboard the Carnival Imagination, sailing from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas and back February 25-28, 2011. Tickets are on sale now for this exclusive and all-inclusive Caribbean getaway.

Bruise Cruise is pleased to announce West Palm Beach's SURFER BLOOD on the festival line-up. Their "floating vibes" are a welcome addition to the Bruise Cruise party barge as it sails from Miami to the Bahamas over the course of 3 days filled with sun, rock'n'roll and relaxation. SURFER BLOOD recently completed a US tour with The Drums and are preparing for an upcoming European tour with Interpol.

Just a reminder that Bruise Cruise is also excited to announce the launch of Bruise Cruise Records. BCR will be releasing a series of limited edition vinyl. Each performing artist will be featured on one side of a 7" vinyl release over the next few months. The first record will be distributed in the first week of November featuring un-released songs from Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees. The 7"s will feature artwork by Rob Corradetti [www.radrox.com].

Every Bruiser will receive at least one complimentary record. As the sailing date nears, Bruise Cruise will be gifting the entire box set through a variety of contests that will be announced on our site.
In the midst of attendees' three days at sea, Bruisers will have the pleasure of soaking up the sun experiencing 24 hours in the Bahamas. Bruise Cruise will be announcing a series of events that will occur in Nassau, including the big island party concert at Señor Frog's, which will feature select Bruise Cruise artists and conclude with New York Night Train's Soul Clap and Dance-Off.
