Gazelle Twin's 'Unflesh'
gazelle-twin

Now that it's December, Best of Lists Season is in full swing. If you're already tired of seeing ones that have The War on Drugs at the top (or near it), you can always rely on UK website The Quietus to offer up something different. They just published their "Albums Of The Year 2014" and topping it is electronic artist Gazelle Twin's second album, Unflesh. Say The Quietus:

On Unflesh, Gazelle Twin - aka Elizabeth Bernholz - doesn't see dualism as an academic exercise or a philosophical plaything. Instead, it's born of bloody experience as she claws and digs her way to its gory, physical core. Puberty, anxiety, miscarriage, illness and euthanasia are all present, and Bernholz's treatment of them ranges from a shuddering disgust to vengeful catharsis to something approaching tender acceptance.
The Quietus' list is not without names familiar to readers of our site -- Swans, Scott Walker & Sunn O))), FKA twigs, Aphex Twin, Future Islands -- but it definitely does not follow the beaten path.

Check out The Quietus' full "Albums Of The Year 2014" (and stream a few songs from their #1) below...

Williamsburg Park

As you may know, outdoor Brooklyn venue Williamsburg Park (at Kent Ave and N 12 St) is hosting shows again this summer. This year's series kicked off during Memorial Day Weekend with a show from The Shins and Man Man, and continues this Saturday (6/29) with a free show from the Julliard Jazz Ensemble. It's an afternoon show (4 PM) and open to the public.

On the down side, the Kendrick Lamar show at Williamsburg Park that was supposed to happen in September was just cancelled. But on the plus side, Charles Bradley will be playing there for free that month.

Other Williamsburg Park shows happening this summer: the Odd Future and Meek Mill show on July 20 which Schoolboy Q was just added to; New Order and Holy Ghost! on July 24; D'Angelo on August 1; and the Mad Decent Block Party (Major Lazer, Flosstradamus, Rockie Fresh & more) on August 10.

The Mad Decent Block party is sold out, but tickets are still available to all the other shows.

Charles Bradley at Firefly 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Charles Bradley

Classic soul devotee Charles Bradley returned this year with his new album, VIctim of Love (out now via Daptone), and already did some touring which included a NYC show at the legendary Apollo Theatre. Now he's got more upcoming dates, including festivals like MusicFestNW, FYF Fest, Lollapalooza, Bumbershoot, and free NYC show happening on September 20 at Williamsburg Park. At that show he'll be backed by Menahan Street Band and support comes from Budos Band and Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens. Doors are at 5:30 PM and the show starts at 7.

Speaking of Williamsburg Park, Kendrick Lamar just canceled his show there.

All upcoming dates are listed, along with a stream of "You Put The Flame On It" from his new LP, below...

Charles Bradley in Fort Greene Park in 2011 (more by BBG)
Charles Bradley

Before Charles Bradley released his excellent debut LP on Daptone Records last year, he performed under the name Black Velvet as a James Brown impersonator. On January 28 at Hiro Ballroom in NYC, he'll bring back the Black Velvet moniker for a James Brown tribute show with Jimmy Hill & The Allstarz Band. Tickets for that show are on sale now. The flier for the show is below.

Charles Bradley just played New Year's Eve at MHOW with Budos Band. Check out a video of them performing together at 12:01 AM, January 1, 2012, below.

More tour dates are down there too...

Flying Lotus

Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 came to a close on Sunday night. It was another successful year for the well-rounded music fest, and the end of its first in the larger (and much dustier) Auditorium Shores. And though Ryan Gosling may have been the most talked about artist at the festival (Danzig was a close second), the real star was festival organizer Transmission Enertainment for putting together such a kickass lineup on four stages for three days straight (not to mention a mechanical bull) (and skate and bike ramp and tons of good food and vendors and merch and posters and wrestling) (and Turquoise Jeep).

After Hum and then a quick set of comedy by metal comedian Brian Posehn (he did his Slayer joke and one that involved Pantera), Slayer closed out the large Orange stage on Sunday (the other metal acts played on the slightly smaller Black Stage all weekend, but the Orange was the biggest and actually specially built to Slayer's specs).

Slayer wasn't the only wild headliner of the day though. In fact, that's an understatement. Trash Talk played after Henry Rollins did his set of spoken word in the Yellow Tent because Trash Talk had to miss their originally scheduled set on the Black Stage earlier in the week due to a family emergency. Thanking everyone for missing Slayer to see them (actually not true because it ended up Trash Talk was done before Slayer even started), Trash Talk started their hardcore insanity by pointing out that they were on the only stage with no barricade (the stage comedians usually played). Circle pits, stagediving, stage crowding, grabbing the mic, pumping fists (and skateboards) and just general craziness characterized the next 20 minutes or so.

The always controversial Odd Future drew their own giant and enthusiastic crowd to their headlining set on the Blue Stage, and Blonde Redhead closed out the Black Stage to a more intimate and chilled out audience (in the location that was metal, punk, garage and hardcore the rest of the weekend).

Here is our second set of pictures from the final day of the fest, including Asobi Seksu, the reunited Hum, We Were Promised Jetpacks (who just played NYC and one of our CMJ day parties), Odd Future, G-Side, Austra, Grimes, MNDR, Mates of State, Budos Band, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Architecture in Helsinki, Del the Funky Homosapien, Brian Posehn, Flying Lotus, Brody Stevens, Trash Talk, Henry Rollins, and more SLAYERRRR.

We previously posted pictures from both day 1 and day 2, and a second set by BBG day 1, day 2, and day 3

The rest of day 3, below...

Lee Fields & The Expressions are headlining a benefit show at Brooklyn Bowl on Monday night (9/26). Tickets can be had for as low as $15 and as much as $100. Proceeds support NYC's non-religious suicide hotline run by Samaritans of NY. Corey Glover (Living Colour), Danielia Cotton, and The Smyrk are also on the bill. It's one of only three upcoming shows right now for Lee. The other two are in Chicago and Michigan and are listed below.

Other upcoming Daptone-related shows include the previously-mentioned Charles Bradley show at Bowery Ballroom in December (tickets), and the not-yet mentioned Budos Band show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on New Year's Eve (with "very special guests to be announced"). Tickets are on sale.

One thing I can assure you is that the MHOW NYE special guest is not Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings who are due to announce another NYC show of their own soon. Meanwhile they have scattered tour dates scheduled, some with My Morning Jacket. All dates for all of them, below...

Slayer, Thee Oh Sees, Public Enemy, Girls, Danzig Legacy, (Danzig + Doyle von Frankenstein playing Misfits, Samhain & Danzig), Hot Snakes, Diplo, Major Lazer, Henry Rollins, Ted Leo & The Phramacists, Spank Rock, Murder City Devils, Hum, Lykke Li, Passion Pit, Four Tet, Rakim, The Damned, Austra, Purity Ring, and Flynt Flossy are just a few of the acts announced today as part of the Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 lineup. Another amazing year! Check out the full lineup below and stay tuned for more announcements coming in August and September.

The new additions to the Austin, Texas festival, which takes place from 11/4 - 11/6, are in addition to the the previous "lineup leaks" that included Brian Posehn, Odd Future, Okkervil River, M83, X (performing "Los Angeles"), Reggie Watts, Flying Lotus, Tune-Yards, Ra Ra Riot, Kid Dynamite and others

2011 is the festival's sixth year, but first at its new home Auditorium Shores (no more Waterloo Park). Tickets are on sale now.

Roy Loney of the Flamin' Groovies w/ the A-Bones (more by Jacob Blickenstaff)
A-Bones with Roy Loney

Similar to 2009, Roy Loney & Cyril Jordan of The Flamin' Groovies will reunite on stage with "musical accompaniment" by The A-Bones for two shows in two different countries this week. The first happens TONIGHT (4/21) at the Bell House in Brooklyn where The A-Bones will also play a separate set of their own and share a Norton Records family bill with Los Vigilantes and Daddy Longlegs. Tickets are still available.

Then it's on to a plane and to the UK for the proto-punkers who will play an Easter Sunday show as part of the LeBeat Bespoke Festival in London, England. Also playing that British festival (but today) is Eli 'Paperboy' Reed who also has a Brooklyn show in his future. The soulful guy will share a bill with Lily and The Parlor Tricks at Southpaw on June 6th. Tickets are on sale. All tour dates are listed below.

In other soul news, The Budos Band now have a NYC show scheduled. You can catch the instrumental Daptone ensemble when they play a free Summerstage show in Staten Island's Tappen Park on August 3rd. That's about a month and a half after they play the Dave Matthews Band Caravan Festival in Atlantic City, and a couple of weeks before they head down to North Carolina for the Hopscotch Fest.

Daptone family member Lee Fields plays Summerstage this summer too, but the one in Central Park along with Fitz & the Tantrums. Meanwhile catch him with the Sweet Divines at Southpaw in May.

The A-Bones recently played a benefit at Union Pool in support of relief for Japan. How was that? Sometimes A-Bones member and full time Yo La Tengo member Ira Kaplan recently sat in with Obits at Generation Records on Record Store Day. Last night Obits played a different benefit at Union Pool, and pictures and a review from that one (in honor of Brendan Majewski) are on the way.

Tour dates and some videos below...

Hopscotch 2011

The second annual Hopscotch Festival will go down in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, across 12 different venues with over 135 bands, from September 8th through 10th. The lineup this year runs the gamut of independent music... from traditional indie staples (The Flaming Lips, Guided By Voices, Superchunk) to southern-inflected rock (Drive-By Truckers) to noise (Prurient) to hip hop (Beans) to garage (Jeff The Brotherhood) to funk (Budos Band) to metal (Krallice), and everywhere in between (Swans, Rhys Chatham, etc etc). Tickets are currently on sale. Full lineup is below.

Hopscotch happens almost three months after Guided By Voices play a Brooklyn Northside Festival show in McCarren Park (tickets) which is one day after Beirut plays a Northside Festival show on the same McCarren Park stage with... Sharon Van Etten (though she may have been accidentally announced at one point, they officially kept her placement on the bill under wraps until after Saturday's Music Hall of Williamsburg show). Tickets for Beirut/SVE are still on sale, and another opener will be added too.

Guided by Voices (whose Brooklyn show also has more openers coming) are also playing Pitchfork in July with Animal Collective whose Prospect Park show is now on AmEx presale.

Swans' upcoming NYC show is now on AmEx presale too.

Hopscotch lineup below...

Syl Johnson supporting Yo La Tengo @ Maxwell's (more by Andrew St. Clair)
Syl Johnson

Deep Groove soul singer Syl Johnson will return to the NYC stage to play a headlining date at The Bell House on June 24th. Tickets are on sale. There he'll be supported by The Sweet Divines who are also scheduled to play a show with soul frontman Lee Fields at Southpaw on May 21st. Tickets are on sale for that too, as is the recently-released "My World" instrumentals on vinyl.

Lee's last show was another sold out affair on Friday, April 1st at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band...

"Bradley left everything he had out on the stage in about 45 minutes and was promptly relieved by headliner Fields, with the Menahan Street Band staying put and subbing for Fields' usual backing group, the Expressions. Looking like a pint-sized Lou Rawls, veteran singer Fields ably continued the retro-exploration into Daptone's dictionary of journeyman soul. As with Bradley, Fields is an older fellow influenced by the torchy, balladic nature of artists like James Brown and Bobby Womack as well as Al Green and the Hi Records crew." [Magnet]
Charles Bradley heads out on tour later this month with instrumental group the Budos Band, who don't have any NYC-area shows scheduled, but who are on the bill of the (gulp) "Dave Matthews Band Caravan" festival taking place in Atlantic City from June 24-26 with The Flaming Lips, Delta Spirit, Dr. Dog and many more.

On a somewhat related note, the funky saxophone great and member of The JB's, Maceo Parker, will play SOB's on May 18th. Tickets are on sale. The show is one of two scheduled for Parker in NYC. He'll also play a FREE show at One Brooklyn Bridge Park on May 12th with DJ Spinna.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Maceo "Funk Dance Party" is the first in a 3-part series of free 'Celebrate Brooklyn' dance parties at the location. May 19th's "Tropical Dance Party" will feature La Excelencia & Que Bajo?!, and May 26th's "Bhangra Dance Party" will feature Red Baraat & DJ Rekha. They promise "Sweeping views, great lawn, dance lessons, beer garden, bike valet & it's free! Three spring evenings featuring some of the coolest dance bands on the planet, the funkiest DJs under the stars, and the greatest view in the world!"

More tour dates and some videos, below...

Sharon Jones & Lee Fields at Prospect Park (more by David Andrako)
Sharon Jones

It's only been a few days since Lee Fields funked up Bowery Ballroom and already lots more Daptone updates to report on!

In addition to their previously discussed date with the purple one at MSG on 1/18, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings have a proper set of East Coast dates scheduled a few weeks later - none in NYC, but there's the 1/29 show at Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ, and a CT show on 2/12. Charles Bradley also plays that show, and others this month with Sharon Jones. He also has his own previously discussed appearance scheduled for 1/25 at Southpaw (tickets are still on sale).

The full lineup of Charles's Southpaw show also includes the Menahan Street Band, "The Electric Sound Of Johnny Arrow" featuring Cochemea Gastelum, DJ Honeydripper, DJ Dave Griffith. Members of the Menahan Street Band also play in The Del Reys who play with Eli Paperboy Reed at Brooklyn Bowl TONIGHT (1/12). Spiritkid is also on the Finger on the Pulse-presented "Soul Bowl" show. Tickets are still on sale.

Charles Bradley recently posted a video for "The World (Is Going Up In Flames)", check out a behind the scenes video for that clip below and look for a longer version to appear on his Facebook later this week.

The Budos Band (who also share members with Menahan Street Band and The Del Reys) have various US tour dates scheduled through June. The band plays NYC again on March 11th at The Bell House. Tickets are on sale.

Prince recently announced another show at MSG on February 7th (no opener info yet). Tickets for the new show go on presale at 11AM on 1/13, and general sale at 10AM on 1/15.

All tour dates and some video is below...

Charles Bradley album art (reminds me of something...)
Charles Bradley

Lotsa great funk and dancefloor grooves are coming to Southpaw and elsewhere for you old soul fans/45 collectors out there.

Though Charles Bradley just released the 45 of the same name, he is prepping to release No Time For Dreaming, a new LP for Dunham/Daptone Records. Is Charles Bradley a stranger to hard time?

Charles Bradley is no stranger to hard times. Born in Gainesville, Florida in 1948 and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he spent the better part of his childhood living on the streets. One of the more optimistic moments of his childhood came in 1964, when his sister took him to see James Brown at The Apollo. Brown's energy and showmanship would form a lasting impression on Charles. He went home and immediately began practicing microphone tricks with a broom attached to a string, imitating the Godfather's every move.

Forty years later, Charles was still trying to make ends meet, still trying to make it as a musician. He was performing his James Brown routines under his alter ego "Black Velvet" when Gabriel Roth of Daptone records happened upon his show at the Tarheel Lounge in Bedstuy. Roth recognized his raw talent and directly brought him into the studio for a session with The Sugarman 3.

No Time for Dreaming (the LP) will be celebrated at a Record Release show with Menahan Street Band (mems of Antibalas, El Michels Affair, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and the Budos Band) at Southpaw on January 25th, 2011. Tickets are on sale.

Charles Bradley's last show was with Lee Fields at Music Hall of Williamsburg on 11/20, and Lee Fields & The Expressions have another show in the immediate future: 1/7 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets are now on sale. Still no opener listed. I'd suggest Budos Band but they just headlined AND SOLD OUT the same venue recently themselves.

Speaking of Daptone, legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint will join Daptone queen Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings at Best Buy Theater during their two day stint at the venue (tickets for both Dec 30 and Dec 31 are still available).

Toussaint collaborated with The Meters in the 70s, who will also be in NYC in the coming months (the "Funky" version anyway) (tickets available for Feb 15th, 16th, and 17th shows billed as "The Funky Meters").

A soulful New Years Eve can also be had outside of Manhattan at the Bell House thanks to Dig Deeper who are bringing Marva Whitney, Billy Prince (of the Precisions) and the Sweet Divines to the Brooklyn venue that night.Tickets are still on sale.

Start the New Year at the Bell House too. The Detroit Cobras headline the venue on January 1st, one night after they ring in the New Year at Maxwell's with the Fleshtones.

Dig Deeper hosts soul singer Lenis Guess at Southpaw on January 22nd with The Solid Set. Tickets are on sale.

Dig Deeper most recently hosted Syl Johnson at Southpaw. Syl also played a show with Yo La Tengo one night later.

Milwaukee's Kings Go Forth will play Southpaw on 2/19 as part of a stint of East Coast dates in late February. Tickets are on sale, and their full tour schedule with some videos and stuff is below.

The Budos Band in Prospect Park (more by David Andrako)
THe Budos Band

The Budos Band celebrated the release of their new LP The Budos Band III at Southpaw last week (9/18), and now will wreck Bowery Ballroom on December 3rd. Tickets go on sale AmEx presale today at noon, and then general sale Friday at noon.

Its easy to tell that a heavy influence on the sound of The Budos Band is Nigerian legend and subject of a Broadway musical, Fela Kuti. In recent weeks, FELA! has taken both a big step forward and a huge step back; R&B legend Patti Labelle recenlty joined the cast of the acclaimed musical, but unfortunately the show will close during the first week in 2011. Boo.

If you haven't seen the show yet, you should. If you can't afford it, then take note: you can get a taste when members of the cast play a FREE show at Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1 on October 4th. Patti won't be there, but FELA! star Sahr Ngaujah will be, alongside the FELA! house band (which includes members of Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra). The show kicks off at 6:30 P.M. More details can be found at the St. Ann's Warehouse site.

In related news, the non-profit Hip-Hop Theater Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a gala at Urban Zen Center at the Stephan Weiss Studio (711 Greenwich Street NYC) on on 9/27:

From 7-8pm VIP guests will be able to enjoy a rooftop reception before general admission. Doors will officially open at 8:30pm, followed by performances from Pulitzer finalist Eisa Davis and Tony Award winning poet Lemon Anderson. A presentation honoring playwright and poet Ntozake Shange and graffiti pioneer artist Enrique PARTONE Torres will then ensue. Sahr Ngaujah of FELA! on Broadway will host the special evening with music provided by DJ Rich Medina.
Tickets are $100 for general admission with $250 for VIP for a rooftop reception & reserved seating. For more ticket information please email info@hhtf.org or call 718.407.4282

Lee Fields at the waterfront (more by Tear n Tan)
Lee Fields

The above picture comes from Lee Fields' recent Pool Party shindig with !!!. Lee Fields & The Expressions also opened for the Black Keys at Terminal 5 in the past month. And now comes word that Lee Fields & The Expressions will headline a NYC show, this time at Music Hall of Williamsburg on 11/20 with Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band. Members of Antibalas, El Michels Affair, the Dap-Kings and the Budos Band make up the members of both soulful bands. Tickets go on sale Wednesday (9/1) at noon.

The Dap Kings, whose most recent NYC show was a headlining one in Prospect Park, meanwhile will head out on tour with Sharon Jones in September. US and European dates below.

The Budos Band have a few shows coming up too, one of which is the release party for their new album ("The Budos Band III") at Southpaw in Brooklyn on September 18th. Tickets for that show are on sale. All dates below.

And last but not least, Daptone's Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens can still be found at Fat Cat every Friday night, and have some upcoming tour dates including Pop Montreal in October. All dates for everyone, below...

"Sharon Jones absolutely murdered celebrate Brooklyn last night. #legendaryshit #ilovethatwoman" - Sleek

Sharon Jones & Lee Fields
Sharon Jones

"Wow...just wow. I don't know why it took me so long to experience the stunning Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, but lawdy, I'm sure glad I went to the concert that closed out a great summer of Celebrate Brooklyn! at the Prospect Park Bandshell and finally got to witness the phenomenon that she is. Sharon Jones blew my mind with her energy, singing, dancing -- you name it, she was a solid gold MVP, James Brown heir-apparent. For 2+ hours, she and her stellar bandmates (including members of the Bushwick Philharmonic) kept the [very large] crowd on their feet, grooving along to a wonderful retro-soul/funk sound that did not let up. She was also assisted on a few songs by the charming Lee Fields." [Qbertplaya]
If there's one show I regret missing by going out of town this past weekend, it was definitely the Daptone one in Prospect Park. More pictures and videos from Sharon Jones's Saturday night free Celebrate Brooklyn show (The Budos Band opened up the night), below...

record store day @ Permanent Records in Greenpoint (autovac)
Record Store Day

Hi everyone...

We at Permanent Records just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you so much for making this year's Record Store Day the unbelievably huge success that it was. You all helped make it the biggest weekend we've ever had, and we sincerely thank all of you for your continued support of our little record store. Hopefully you managed to get most (if not all) of the Record Store Day exclusives you were looking for. If you'd like to see photos from the big day (which, if you were at the front of the line that morning, you are probably in), click here.

We do still have some of the Record Store Day exclusives in stock... so if you haven't made it in to check out some of these limited new releases, it's still not too late! They're on display, right in front of you as you walk into the store.

So, since we're still recovering from the mayhem of this weekend, we're taking a break from our New In Stock / Back In Stock mailer this week. Rest assured, we have plenty of new records available this week, but if you wanna know what they're are, you'll just have to come in and look for them. You know, like old times.

Thanks again everyone. We truly appreciate your business.

-The P-Recs Staff

Mystery of Two were the house band at Permanent Records on that day. The Drums and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart performed sets at Other Music. Billboard reports (via) that "this year's Record Store Day was, again, a success when measured by awareness, turnout and sales."
- Other Music had their best single day in their 14 year history.
- The Sound Garden had their busiest day in years, outpacing Christmas sales for the past couple of years.
- Vintage Vinyl sold more stuff on RSD than any other day in the stores' history.
- Twist N Shout reported the best sales they've ever had in a single day.
- RSD 2010 was Sonic Boom's single biggest sales day in their 12 year history.
- Silver Platters' sales on RSD 2010 were up 80% from last year (which were up 20% from the year before).
- Exclusive Company's RSD 2010 sales increased 102% from RSD 2009.
- Dimple did twice as much in sales from last year's RSD event.
And those numbers don't even count the RSD records that (some) stores are (allegedly) just throwing right on eBay.

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings stranded in Dusseldorf
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings in the airporT

Poor Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. As you can see above, they spent their weekend in airports instead of enjoying sunny Florida where another, less high profile, festival happened this Coachella weekend. It's called Wanee, and it was affected by the volcano too. The NY group was overseas because they just played a show in London...

"Wednesday's show was essentially a nonstop soul and funk party, complete with trumpet, tenor sax and baritone sax, drums and percussion, electric bass, and two guitars. The horn section delivered melodic and rhythmic blasts that had the volume and punch of six horns, not just three. Quick, shuffling break beats and short, percussive guitar parts on top of melodic bass lines provided a backdrop that Jones wailed on top of." [Telegraph]
Back home Daptone was still representing. As advertised, the Budos Band played a Record Store Day in-store at Generation Records on Saturday, and a show at Southpaw in Brooklyn the night before that. Pictures from the latter are below.

If you missed both Budos shows, there's always June 5th in NJ with Les, or the just-added June 11th show aboard a Rocks Off boat. Tickets for that one are now on sale.

The Dap Kings helped deal with their boredom by recording and posting a video to YouTube. Check it out, with the Southpaw pictures, below...

Generation Records

Generation Records (210 Thompson St. in NYC) has one of the busier Record Store Days this Saturday (4/17), with live sets from Cymbals Eat Guitars, Black Wine (ex-The Ergs/Hunchback who play April 25th at Mercury Lounge), Walter Schreifels (ex-Gorilla Biscuits/Quicksand) and The Budos Band and DJing from Andrew WK, at 2pm.

UPDATE: Walter had to cancel due to volcano.

Space in the store is limited (to say the least), so getting there early is recommended. Though stores generally can't guarantee which Record Store Day records that'll have in stock, one of the released singles is going to be a Budos Band/Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings split with a cover of "Day Tripper" and from Sharon's new record, "Money." Both Sharon and Budos have some other NYC shows coming up too.

Generation Records is one of many NYC record stores with Record Store Day activities on Saturday. Other Music also has an impressive day planned.

Walter Schreifels also plays a Rival Schools show at Union Pool on April 23rd, and a solo gig at Studio at Webster Hall on May 5th.

Cymbals Eat Guitars go on to open for Los Campesinos on their upcoming tour. Both bands play a sold-out Maxwell's show later on April 17th. And they have an April 22nd show at Irving Plaza, which you can still get tickets for. All dates below.

CEG just wrapped their tour with Bear in Heaven with an April 9th show at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Their encore from that show, all dates and past Generation Records in-stores are below...

Budos Band

Daptone's funky Budos Band play Southpaw on Friday, April 16th with The Jay Vons. Tickets are on sale. One day later, Saturday, April 17th (Record Store Day), the band plays a free in-store at Generation Records.

Lee Fields & The Expressions, who played Southpaw last in December, will return to the venue for a show on June 18th. (Budos, who also frequent the spot, were there in January.) Tickets are on sale.

Their labelmates Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, whose new record out debuted at #15 on the Billboard chart this week, will be playing two sold-out Apollo Theater shows, on April 30th and May 1st. Leading up to that, catch the band on late-night TV - their schedule, their video for single "I Learned the Hard Way" (which opens with Lee Fields) and all Budos' summer tour dates are below...

Speaking of Wellmont Theatre, Modest Mouse - in addition to their NYC show at Williamsburg Waterfront on July 23rd - will be playing at NJ's Wellmont Theatre on Thursday, July 22nd. Tickets go on sale Friday (4/16) at noon.

In addition, 80s hit-makers like Crowded House, Huey Lewis & the News, and Tears for Fears all have shows coming up at the venue and it was just announced that Lyle Lovett will play there on Sunday, August 15th. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon.

Les Claypool plays there June 5th (a few days before Brooklyn Bowl) with Budos Band and Hot Head Show. Patty Griffin is June 11th.

Flaming Lips are at Wellmont Theatre, one of several planned gigs for the band in the area, on April 19th.

Wilco recently played there two nights in a row.
