Left for Dead

In the wake of the sell-out of A389 2013 in Baltimore, the label has expanded the two-day fest into a full extended weekend! A389 Anniversary will kickoff with a pre-fest show at Ottobar on 1/17/13 featuring Integrity, Withdrawal, Vilipend and Dead Gods , then come to a close with a Sunday matinee on 1/20/13 at Charm City Art Space with Left for Dead, Iron Reagan, God's America and Eddie Brock.

In addition to the previously discussed Friday/Saturday shows at Ottobar, Saturday (1/19) will now feature a matinee at Sidebar with Despise You, Gehenna, Dead in The Dirt, Ancient Shores and WarXGames AND an afterparty with Nothing (who recently toured). None of the newly announced shows will have advanced ticketing; you can only buy them at the door. Full show details are below.

Catharsis has only one show during A389 festival, so what does that mean? Could a tour be in the works?

In other A389 news, the label will release Devoid of Everything, which collects Left for Dead's entire 1996-97 studio output remixed from the original 1/4" multi-track reels. Check out the art above and you can stream a track below. Left for Dead members went on to play in bands like Cursed, Haymaker, Pick Your Side, Burning Love, and many many more. This rare one-time reunion (I was assured!) is not to be missed. Check out some thoughts on the reunion via Chris Colohan here.

Meanwhile, Full of Hell, who plays the Friday show of the fest, is on tour with Gaza now and will play Acheron on 11/24 with Code Orange Kids (tickets).

If you're wondering who Iron Reagan is, the band is prepping to release their 20-track debut Worse Than Dead via A389 in 2013. The band features half of Municipal Waste and members of Darkest Hour and you can stream their demo below alongside details of the A389 festivities.

Black Breath leads a singalong
Black Breath

Southern Lord's been keeping plenty busy on the live front with their various Power of the Riff showcases, but have only recently ventured into the wonderful world of curating tour packages. Pleasantly enough, the lineup on this inaugural run is pretty damn unassailable, featuring as it does up and coming SL acts like Enabler and Burning Love (featuring ex-members of BBG favorite Cursed) as well as Swedish crusties Martyrdod and the Entombedcore stomp of Black Breath. The tour tacked on a handful of SL affiliates and friends at various locations (if only Noothgrush could have been magically whisked out to Bushwick), and the NYC date at The Acheron on 7/6 saw Italy's The Secret perform.

The G train is bullshit and I showed up to the gig far later than desired, squeaking my way into the sold-out venue just in time for Martyrdod. Longtime fans in the audience may have grumbled over the band's decision to focus mainly on newer material (including cuts from their latest record, Paranoia, which was recently unleashed courtesy of the 'Lord) but their overall performance was totally on point. Brutal, blackened kängpunk destruction - here's hoping they make it back soon!

Black Breath's reputation as a formidable live act has been cemented a dozen times over by now, but they still saw fit to drive that shit home with a frenetic, captivating onslaught of d-beaten hardcore and shades of vintage Stockholm death. The Acheron's newly-expanded innards were packed tight well before the band even went onstage, and as soon as those first notes were struck, it was chaos. Sweat and blood flowed, hair flew, heads banged, and Black Breath kept on raging 'til the bitter end. -Kim Kelly

======

It was a pretty incredible night at Acheron on July 6th. NYC's Grudges opened the show, mixing up elements of grind, slam, and crust to a respectably large crowd at 8PM. Enabler's Tragedy-influenced hardcore followed, winning over many new fans according to the chatter on the street following. Chris Colohan of Burning Love spent good portion of the show pushing his way through the crowd. The Secret's Converge-y, black metal-tinged hardcore was definitely well received by the raging, headbanging room. And nobody got stabbed. - BBG

More pictures from the show of all the bands, plus video, are below.

Burning Love at Europa (more by Meghan McInnis)
Burning Love

Burning Love, who played a matinee show over the weekend, will have quite the selection of wares when they hit the road this summer as part of the Southern Lord tour. For starters, Chris Colohan and co will release the previously discussed Black Widow EP, a 7" featuring two tracks including new jam "Karla" and a cover of the Laughing Hyenas "Love's My Only Crime". Stream the latter here for the very first time and look for the record on High Anxiety / No Idea Records on 5/8.

The Black Widow EP is the precursor to the band's new LP and Southern Lord debut, Rotten Thing To Say. Due on June 19th, the LP features the recently released "Hateful Comforts" which is streamable at Alternative Press.

As previously discussed, that Southern Lord tour will hit NYC with an unreal lineup of Black Breath, Martyrdod, The Secret and Enabler at Acheron on July 6th. Tickets are on sale for this BrooklynVegan event.

All tour dates and that song stream is below.

DNF
DNF

Despite the awesome performance by Code Orange Kids (who rule, and just played Acheron), I'm still a bit bummed that DNF had to cancel our Thrasher Deathmatch show (which happened in Austin during SXSW).

The quartet, which features members of Trash Talk & Touche Amore, weave feedback-laced venom into sludge, hardcore and grind on their debut EP Hurt, out TOMORROW (4/17) via High Anxiety / No Idea. Stream all of that release below. Recommended for fans of Trash Talk and negative, uber-pissed off hardcore/grind. The EP is just a teaser for upcoming material according to the band, so we'll let you know when more material starts to surface.

If you're in the Los Angeles area, do not miss DNF when the band plays Self Help Graphics on April 27th with an embarrassingly impressive lineup of Lack of Interest, Weekend Nachos, and ACxDC.

DNF's label High Anxiety is run by Chris Colohan of Burning Love/Cursed/etc, in conjunction with Var Thelin of No Idea. Chris's band Burning Love will be touring in the coming months and hitting NYC twice. First at Acheron on April 29th with the mighty Salvation (who have an amazing new EP on Youth Attack), Shoxx (members of Pollution & Nomos) and Old Wounds and then again as part of the Southern Lord mega-tour with Black Breath (who played the BV-Power of The Riff SXSW showcase), Enabler (them too), Martyrdod (!), and more TBA. The band will release the Black Widow 7" via No Idea at the end of April.

All Burning Love tour dates and that DNF EP stream is below.

Black Breath at BV-Power of The Riff SXSW (more by Greg Cristman)
Black Breath

BrooklynVegan is proud to announce the NYC date of the MASSIVE Southern Lord Tour! The tour features appearances from the mighty Black Breath & Martyrdod on all dates, with rotating appearances from Poison Idea, The Secret, Burning Love, Enabler, Noothgrush, Pelican, Powertrip, Wild/Tribe, Dead in The Dirt, and All Pigs Must Die.

All dates are still TBA now announced and listed below. NYC's lineup will feature Black Breath & Martyrdod, along with The Secret, Burning Love, Enabler and one more band still TBA. It goes down on July 6th at Acheron and tickets are on sale.

Black Breath, who played the BV/Power of The Riff/Southern Lord SXSW showcase (along with Enabler), haven't played NYC since their headlining show at The Studio at Webster Hall. The band recently released Sentenced To Life via Southern Lord.

Martyrdod have never played the East Coast and are touring on the strength of their 2010 release Sekt. The band will release their next LP Paranoia with Southern Lord.

The Secret last played NYC at Union Pool after SXSW 2011, where they also played a BV day party at Emo's.

Burning Love a bunch other dates and an NYC show in the near future. They're headlining Acheron on 4/29. The band have the new Black Widow 7" on the way via No Idea.

All dates and some videos below...

La Dispute @ the Acheron in 2010 (more by Samantha Marble)
La Dispute

Sound and Fury Fest, notoriously shut down after a riot last year, returns this year and takes place in the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara, CA from July 22-24. The lineup consists of several hardcore and metal bands including Defeater, Burning Love, and Deafheaven, who all have upcoming NYC shows.

Tourmates Defeater and La Dispute play The Studio tonight (5/24), after having played Krazy Fest this past weekend. Tickets are still on sale if you need some last minute hadcore plans. You can read about the 5/20 show at Altar Bar at 'A Brief Intermission'...

"...One thing is for sure, La Dispute do not lack energy. Dreyer and company rarely stayed still, and that energy was reciprocated enthusiastically by the crowd. They played a set full of great songs from their incredible full length, Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair, including the crowd favorite "The Castle Builders," in which, to the fans delight, they considerably slowed down the ending sing-along. They also played both songs from their split with Touche Amore, which translated into incredible live songs and were certainly favorites of the crowd.
Meanwhile Touche Amore are touring ferociously in support of their upcoming sophomore album Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me which will be released June 7 via Deathwish. Their 3+ month tour includes the previously announced Santos Party House show on June 24 with Title Fight, The Menzingers, and Dead End Path (tickets). Touche also head out on a European leg with La Dispute. All dates are listed below.

Touche Amore's Deathwish labelmates Deafheaven play Cake Shop on June 17 with Gholas. As mentioned, KEN Mode unfortunately dropped off the show, though they will still appear on other dates of the tour. An updated list is below.

Burning Love open for Converge and Trap Them Wednesday (5/25) at the sold out Santos Party House, and at other dates which are listed below. La Dispute opened for Trap Them at the Acheron in 2010.

All tour dates below...

Omar Souleyman at MHoW last year (more by Lori Baily)
Omar Souleyman

Syrian musician Omar Souleyman is returning to the states this summer and has added a June 12th show at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Ali Shaker. That NYC gig is in addition to previously announced dates at Bonnaroo, Chaos in Tejas and the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Tickets to the Brooklyn show go on AmEx presale Wednesday morning, and then on general sale Friday (4/15).

In related news, Austin festival Chaos In Tejas has made some major moves recently, adding Baroness, Citizens Arrest, Crystal Antlers, The Donkeys, Burning Love, and Trap Them to the fold and losing one band, Low Threat Profile. To pick up tickets for individual shows or a pass for the whole event, head to the Chaos in Tejas page.

Chaos in Tejas is one of the stops on the Converge/Burning Love/Trap Them tour which hits Santos on May 25th. Tickets for the NYC show are on sale.

All Pigs Must Die at Full Metal Texas (more by Samantha Marble)
All Pigs Must Die

A bit of bad news... Burning Love has cancelled their scheduled appearance at Union Pool Friday with Nails, All Pigs Must Die & New Lows, and their show with Unbroken at Santos Party House on 4/9. Fortunately for both shows though, excellent bands have stepped in to fill their shoes. The slot at Union Pool will be filled by Psychic Limb and the Santos show will be replaced by special guests... Damnation AD! Santos will be Damnation AD's first NYC appearance since their reunion dates in 2007. Tickets are available at the door for Nails, but unfortunately Santos is sold out.

In related news, All Pigs Must Die have signed to Southern Lord for their new/forthcoming LP and recently dropped some details on that forthcoming LP:

The final master is approved for the GOD IS WAR lp and the artwork is currently being drawn by FLORIAN BERTMER. Just a matter of time before everything is ready to go to the pressing plant. More to come.
Can't wait. All dates, flyers, and some video is below.

Winter's Into Darkness
Winter

Apologies folks, I lied to you. The previously discussed BrooklynVegan event on April 3rd at Union Pool with Wormrot (who just played SXSW), Goden, Deathcycle, and Kings Destroy is not what it seems.... IN FACT, the band "Goden" is not a band at all, but a psuedonym for another much bigger & more influential pioneer of death doom.... Winter! That's correct, Winter will play their first US show in many years on April 3rd in preparation for their showing at the sunn o))) curated event at Roadburn 2011. Tickets for the Brooklyn show are still available, but not for long.

Winter will join names like Scorn, Sunn O))), Corrosion of Conformity (Animosity-lineup), Earth, Caspar Brötzmann Massaker, Hooded Menace, Trap Them, Aluk Todolo, The Secret, Grave Miasma, Mamiffer, and many esteemed others as part of the day long event during the sold-out Roadburn festival. The band recently reissued their death-doom masterpiece Into Darkness on 180 gram vinyl/CD for Southern Lord, get a copy.

Trap Them @ Full Metal Texas
Trap Them

Speaking of Trap Them, the band recently played the BV/1000K stage at Full Metal Texas and a second set of pictures from the show are below.

Trap Them will hit the road for a string of US dates in the coming months with Converge(!) & Dropdead(!), hitting NYC at Santos Party House on May 25th with Burning Love (who also play Union Pool on 4/1 with Nails). Ticketing info is forthcoming. Converge & Dropdead will also team for a split 7" which will "hopefully" be available by the tour. Converge is also currently working on new material for their forthcoming LP.

All tour dates, more pictures from Full Metal Texas, the full Roadburn lineup and the Winter show flyer, below...

Nails (photo by Ben Cooper)
Nails

2010 was good to California's Nails. The band's Unsilent Death (a personal fave) quickly disappeared from circulation at Six Feet Under Records and was repressed by the venerable Southern Lord. Killer tours followed, including bi-coastal dates with Venomous Concept (that tour hit Europa in September).

Now comes word that Nails will keep the party going into the new year. They'll hit the East Coast for a string of select dates with Burning Love, All Pigs Must Die, and New Lows. Included in those is an April 1st appearance at Union Pool, a BrooklynVegan/1000 Knives production.

Full tour dates, tour flyer, and and some video is below.

Forgetters at Red 7 in Austin (more here)
Forgetters

Few hardcore and punk shows to put on your radar....

Forgetters will team with Oi band Hard Skin and Boston hardcore The Rival Mob for a killer three-way at Europa on Oct 22nd. Tickets are on sale. The show is one of three on Blake Schrazenbach's horizon. Forgetters will also play Cake Shop with Pregnant, These Days, and Bells on 9/10 and support Obits at Knitting Factory on 11/12. Their first 7" is out on September 21st.

Word is that Veins (with Mark McCoy of Das Oath, Charles Bronson, etc) was originally on the Hard Skin bill, but had to drop off, and speaking of Mark McCoy, his other project Failures has another show coming up. Australia's Straightjacket Nation will headline 538 Johnson with Failures, Vile Gash, Scapegoat, and Confines on 10/2. Veins, which also features members of Drunkdriver, Das Oath, and Castevet, recently pressed their great cassette on 7" vinyl. Pick up a copy via Youth Attack, it rules.

Speaking of Youth Attack, Brutal Chicago hardcore band Raw Nerve released their incredible self-titled LP on the label earlier this year. Though copies of that are long gone, you can still catch the band when they headline Acheron on 10/16 along with Manipulation, Perdition, and Concrete Cross (members Disnihil/Celebrity Murders).

They released their Songs for Burning Lovers LP, wowed me at Europa, and got robbed while on tour with Coliseum, but now Burning Love is back on the road and will hit Acheron on 9/25.

And last but certainly not least, look for a double dose of Danish Hardcore punk from Hjertestop when they play NYC twice in early November. On 11/8, look for the band to play The Charleston with Night Birds, Nomos, and Crazy Spirit while 11/9 gets Acheron with Swedes Fy Fan! and Crazy Spirit.

A video of forgetters playing Generation Records in 2009, below...

Coliseum bassist Mike Pascal, in flight
Coliseum

Coliseum headlined Europa on July 8th (Thursday), alongside ex-Cursed project Burning Love, Tournament, Elks, and the great Fight Amp as part of a larger tour in celebration of A House With A Curse, their new album out NOW on Temporary Residence Limited.

The new LP shows the band venturing into new territory (as discussed in our recent interview) with similarly compelling results as the old material, though guitarist/vocalist Ryan Patterson remarked:

"We got called Prog Metal today."
Huh-what? Regardless of what tag you put on it, their new material sounded fantastic live, and made me go home and take the LP for another spin. For the straight and narrow hardcore folk, the new LP might take some getting used to, but the returns are worth the investment.

Burning Love supported, and Chris Colohan's new band absolutely smokes! Though they have more in common with Doomriders than Colohan's former band, the band ripped through their set and brought to life some of the material that I was so-so on in their recorded output. Tons of live energy, these dudes rule.

Unfortunately, I missed Tournament, Fight Amp and Elks (our photographer missed Tournament & Fight Amp), though I am sure that both Fight Amp and Elks delivered a whopping blow to the early crowds. Elks will play Death By Audio on Sunday (7/18), alongside Reading Rainbow, Splinters, Heavy Cream (currently touring with JEFF The Brotherhood) and Big Boyz.

More pics from the show are below....

Coliseum at Europa (more by Chloe Rice)
Coliseum

Coliseum is hitting the roadin June/July, and have added an NYC show at Europa with Tournament on July 8th as part of a larger tour with Burning Love (who we profiled last year, ex-Cursed). Ticket info is forthcoming.

The tour is in celebration of Coliseum's new album and upcoming LP, House With A Curse, on the way via their new home Temporary Residence Limited. The first track to surface from that LP, "Blind In One Eye", is above and available for download. Recorded by Kevin Ratterman and mixed by J. Robbins at the Magpie Cage in Baltimore, the eleven track LP features appearances from a host of notables including Jason Noble (Rodan), Will Oldham, members of Young Widows, and a host of others.

YOB Live (hevisto)
YOB

Out this week, the return of the mighty YOB with their absolutely colossal new album The Great Cessation. If you were a fan of masterful, thundering, sickening doom or the previous material by YOB or Middian/Age Eternal, this album is HIGHLY recommended... possibly their best LP yet? The Great Cessation is currently on sale at the Profound Lore, and the band recently was interviewed by Hellbound.

The brutal band with the awesome name, Weekend Nachos, are hitting the road at the end of August and into September bludgeoning the Northeast with dates including Rockstar Bar on Sept 4th! The band is currently supporting their new LP Unforgivable out now at your favorite distro or via the band. Check out "A Few Blocks South" from Unforgivable and make sure and get out to Rockstar Bar on 9/4, if you ain't chicken.

Cave In is BACK officially with the release of the Planets of Old 12", and the song "Retina Sees Rewind" available now on iTunes! The ultra-limited 12" is available July 28th, and in much larger numbers at their comeback show on July 19th in Allston, MA.

Maryland Deathfest has announced the inital 2010 lineup and.... whoooa nelly!
ENTOMBED, OBITUARY, EYEHATEGOD, PENTAGRAM, SINISTER, INCANTATION, PORTAL, HAEMORRHAGE, IMPALED, GRIDLINK, INGROWING (Czech Republic), GRIDE (Czech Republic), 16, BIRDS OF PREY, MASSGRAVE (Canada), FUCK THE FACTS (Canada), TOMBS, HOWL

Nadja & BBA Out now via 20 Buck Spin, the collaborative LP between Nadja & Black Boned Angel. Black Boned Angel is probably best known as the alter-ego of Campbell Kneale of Birchville Cat Motel, who collaborated with Nadja over 2+ years to create the three tracks which formed this LP, as well as the Christ Send Light EP. The graphic artwork is very indicative of the collaborative spirit of the LP as well, as it is also a collaboration between revered artists Stephen Kasner and David D'Andrea. Check out a snippet of one of the tracks on the LP above. Also out now, BBA's new LP Verdun available via Riot Season.

Union Pool has gone metal! Besides the previously mentioned Dysrhythmia show and the Hull / Giant Squid / Grayceon shindig, the venue has also lined up a few other notable shows in the coming months including the mighty Atomic Bitchwax on August 1, f'n Cable on August 15th (3 days before the release of The Failed Convict), and finally Neurot signees It's Casual on August 23rd. Full Cable tour dates are below. Stream the new Dysrhythmia album, Psychic Maps, here.

Baroness have completed work on their new album due in October via Relapse Records!

Burnt By the Sun are preparing their FINAL album for release, Heart Of Darkness due on August 18th via Relapse Records. Check out "Inner Station" available for download above, which is also on the Relapse Contamination 2009 comp available for $5.99 on iTunes. The band has scheduled a gang of Euro-dates, but none in the US so far... although with Dave Witte gearing up to release Municipal Waste's Massive Aggressive, I'm guessing it might be a while.

Check out a video interview with Municipal Waste, live video of Saint Vitus, as well as a new project featuring Chris Colohan of Cursed, Pentagram, Burzum, 3 Inches Of Blood, Kayo Dot, and much more as This Week In Metal Continues...
