Burnt By The Sun at Cake Shop (more by Paul Birman)
Burnt By The Sun

After playing a "maybe" last show ever, Burnt By The Sun will return from the grave one last time (they say) to support Harvest with Torchbearer at The Studio at Webster Hall on July 20th. Tickets are on sale. The show is one of three scheduled for Harvest in the coming months. The band will also play July 16th in Minneapolis with Disembodied at what may be their last show too...

"Harvest is returning to play their hometown after not playing for almost 12 years. Disembodied will also join them and it is rumored that this is their last show. At first the show was being held at a same venue which only held 200+ people. It has recently been moved at the Triple Rock Social Club, which makes more tickets more available now. I believe theirs show will sell out again so if you want to go, pick up your tickets as soon as possible. The show will also have Relentless, Venia, Former Thieves and Iron Rain. All this bands are from the Midwest so come out support No Coast Hardcore." [Ill Cause Webzine]
Harvest's third upcoming show is the previously discussed Sound & Fury Fest in July.

In related news, Seattle band Trial have reunited and are also on the bill of Sound & Fury Fest. No need to travel all the way to California to see them though. They are playing a Panic Records Showcase at The Studio at Webster Hall in NYC on June 27th with Another Breath (their last NYC show), The Saddest Landscape, Powerwolves, and Don't Give A Fuck. Tickets are on sale. The date is one of four Trial currently have schedule, and they also played the "first-ever Panic Records Showcase" at Neumos in Seattle on May 27th.

All tour dates and some video below...

Another year gone, but not without lasting memories! Eyehategod (x2). Akitsa. Rorschach (x2). BV-BBG @ CMJ. Ludicra. BV @ Northside. Keelhaul... Not to mention the tons of memories jogged by my turntable and iPod. Estimates place the number of albums released in 2008 at 115,000, and while similar data for 2009 is scarce, I think that number seems on the low side. With so many to choose from, you can imagine that it was tough to sift through 20 (22 actually) that represented my year...

Before I dive into quotes and explanations, I would like to thank twitter and my cellphone for allowing me to take notes at the most inconvenient of times -- like being smushed in between a bunch of big and way-too-stoked hardcore dudes at the Burnt By the Sun show. Because I was a stupid stoner as a teenager, its pretty hard to remember all the stuff I see at shows...

Rich Hall

Rich Hall, aka 1000 Knives, is a NYC-based booker that is responsible for some of the most forward-thinking hardcore shows in NYC since he started working at CBGB in the early 2000s. After CBGB closed, Rich took a break, but has been back booking shows independently again for about a year.

During his career he's booked early shows by Isis, Botch, Daughters, The Red Chord, Blacklisted, and many, many more. Recently he put together the upcoming Disembodied show at Santos as well as the recent (and possibly final?) Burnt By The Sun show at Cake Shop (pictures here and here) which was a co-production with Brooklyn Vegan... a relationship that continues into the future as BV & 1000 Knives are proud to present three more shows together in January alone. Check out the list at the bottom of our interview with Rich...

Black Anvil @ Cake Shop
Black Anvil

Though all thoughts are on CMJ and Burnt By The Sun / Tombs / Black Anvil / Bloodhorse / Torchbearer was close to three weeks ago, it hasn't slipped my mind as one of the great shows of 2009 (Shout to 1000 Knives). A second set of pics from that monumental show are below.

In related news, we are delighted to have Black Anvil on board for the BrooklynVegan-BBG/Relapse show at Fontana's on 10/23, along with the recently added DJ's Bloodbath & Beyond (aka Brandon Stosuy & DJ Shark). The full lineup and set times for the night show have been previously announced, but what hasn't been announced is you can win A FREE PAIR OF TICKETS AND A VIP BRACELET entitling you to lots of FREE Hornitos Tequila. More on how to win at the bottom of this post.

Meanwhile, we haven't announced the set times for the BrooklynVegan Day Show at Fontana's right before the official showcase. Doors open at 1PM with the following bands taking the stage at these times:

5:30 Nebula
4:30 Crystal Antlers
3:30 Naam
2:45 Goes Cube
2:00 Ume
Get there early, because we'll have a limited supply of FREE Miller beer and FREE Vitamin Water for everyone.

More pics by Samantha Marble are below and another set by Paul Birman are here.

"Was soooo brutal. And just awesome. It reminded me why I love going to shows. Which is a good thing. Cause I always start to forget. Hopefully the footage of this amazing show surfaces quickly. *Ahem* *Cough*. Pardon, me." [anthony l rivera]
Before I utter a single word, I want to thank every person that came out to Cake Shop on 10/2 and 1000 Knives for making the BrooklynVegan sponsored Burnt By The Sun/Tombs/Black Anvil/Bloodhorse/Torchbearer show such a success. Much like the killer Rorschach performance at The Charleston a week earlier, the packed-solid basement at the venue was 1000 degrees and brimming with energy. I can't think of a better way to send off such an amazing band than with so much love (anger?).

Burnt By The Sun are currently heading out to Europe for a (possibly final?) string of dates. If you missed it, we interviewed Dave Witte before the NYC show.

Tombs, who were tighter than ever on 10/2, are heading to Europe in November with Buried Inside. Following that tour, Tombs will headline The Studio @ Webster Hall with Rosetta on 12/12. Tickets are here.

Black Anvil are scheduled to play Gramercy on 12/16 with a killer lineup of Marduk, Nachtmystium, Merrimack, and Mantic Ritual. Tickets are on sale. Gramercy is a KILLER bill, but thats not the only unmissable NYC date that they have in the calendar... details to come, but save the date... 10/23.

Torchbearer have one additional date on their calendar, at Rock N Roll High School in New Brunswick on 10/15 featuring a killer lineup of Seasick, Soul Control, Black Kites, and Plaguebearers. Door fee is set at an unreasonably high stokeability to cost factor of $5.

Bloodhorse recently dropped Horizoner via Translation Loss. The band currently has no dates on their calendar, but if that changes, you can be damn sure that they'll let you know via their spankin' new twitter.

Witte

They say that the clothes make the man, but in the music world, the drummer makes the band. That's the only way to explain the string of successes that have followed Dave Witte since he first sat behind the kit as a member of the influential yet under-appreciated Human Remains. Since then, Witte has played with some of the greatest bands in the heavy underground, laying the back beat to names as powerful as Municipal Waste, Discordance Axis, Anodyne, Black Army Jacket, Melt Banana, and we can't forget about Burnt By The Sun.

Burnt By The Sun recently released their swansong, Heart of Darkness, via Relapse Records. In celebration of this last LP, the band will embark on final tour of Europe in October with only one US date scheduled: October 2nd at Cake Shop with Tombs, Black Anvil, Bloodhorse, and Torchbearer. Considering the band members' current undertakings, it isn't out the question to say that this could be their last show for a very very long time.

With that as a primer, I fired some questions at Dave Witte about Municipal Waste, the end of Burnt By The Sun, and the possiblity of him returning to the kit for Human Remains, Discordance Axis or Black Army Jacket. The conversation is below....

Tombs @ Gramercy (more by Chris La Putt)
Tombs

The killer Burnt By The Sun / Tombs / Black Anvil / Bloodhorse / Torchbearer rockstravaganza blasts off TOMORROW (10/2) at the motherlovin' Cake Shop, but if you were to have to miss Friday (why?), luckily, another Tombs show is right around the corner. (BBTS, that's another story... )

After supporting gigs with the likes of Marduk, Isis and Pelican, and Genghis Tron, Tombs have scheduled a headlining show of their own at The Studio @ Webster Hall with star-gazing post-metallers Rosetta, the emo-meets-Isis stylings of Junius, and the ever-technical Irepress. Tickets are on sale. Yikes! 'Tis a good 'un.

Tombs play Richmond tonight with Cannabis Corpse and Infernal Stronghold, a pairing that will hit NYC on Saturday (10/2)! Cannabis Corpse plays ABC No Rio during the day and then hits The Charleston with Infernal Stronghold that night. We premiered two new tracks from Infernal Stronghold, and now you can check out a new song from Cannabis Corpse's EP The Weeding available above!

BBTS/Tombs extravaganza isn't the only massive show of the weekend. BV is also proud to present Woe, Aluk Todolo, Malkuth and Castevet at Union Pool on 10/4! It's only $8 to get in, but a lucky TWO WINNERS will receive a pair of tickets gratis! Just email us at BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM with the subject line of "Woe is ME!" (include your first and last name).

Rosetta is preparing to release a three way split with the awesome Year of No Light and East Of The Wall on Translation Loss. Preorder that bad boy here. Irepress recently released Sol Eye Sea I on the same label.

Junius is currently offering their new LP for free in digital form and on pre order in the physical

Municipal Waste

Municipal Waste and the mighty Phobia are going on tour and teaming up with Brutal Truth and Cauldron for a string of dates along the way. Those include a NYC show at Gramercy Theatre on 12/9. Tickets are on sale.

Phobia, who dropped 22 Random Acts Of Violence via Willowtip last year, are currently working on a video for "Rise Up". Look for that soon.

Meanwhile, Municipal Waste drummer Dave Witte will be in NYC this Friday (10/4) at Cake Shop when he will join Burnt By The Sun in their only scheduled US show brought to you by 1000 Knives and Brooklyn Vegan! Support will come from none other than Tombs, Black Anvil, Bloodhorse, and the recently added Torchbearer. There are no advance tickets... you can only get 'em at the door... unless, of course, you were to win one of TWO FREE PAIRS. For more on how to win those tickets, look at the bottom of this post.

The show is one of two BV sponsored shows for the weekend, the second being Woe, Aluk Todolo, Malkuth, and Castevet at Union Pool on 10/4. Tickets are $8 at the door.

Dave Witte has also been known to join the live incarnation of Melt Banana, though his schedule dictates that he won't be playing with them during their upcoming North American tour.

Burnt by The Sun!
Burnt By The Sun

It's gonna be a great fall! In addition to the previously announced awesomeness that is The Blackened Music Series/BrooklynVegan present Shrinebuilder at Le Poisson Rouge on November 15th (tickets), we now present ANOTHER reason to hide your children and check off a date on your calendar...

1000 Knives and BrooklynVegan are proud to present Burnt By The Sun with Bloodhorse, Tombs and Black Anvil at Cake Shop on Oct 2nd! The show is the ONLY US date scheduled for Burnt By The Sun, and considering Dave Witte's commitments with the Massive-ly Aggressive Municipal Waste, it could be their last for a very long time. Shortly after Cake Shop, BBTS will embark on a European tour to promote their final album, Heart of Darkness. Download "Inner Station" off of Heart of Darkness above.

This show won't be the first time Black Anvil and Tombs share a bill. Most recently both bands played with Marduk and Withered at Gramercy Thetre.

Before Tombs dropped their essential 2009 LP, Winter Hours, we interviewed vocalist/guitarist Mike Hill. Black Anvil recently signed with Relapse Records, who reissued their awesome Time Insults The Mind.

More details on the Cake Shop show and full BBTS dates are below...

YOB Live (hevisto)
YOB

Out this week, the return of the mighty YOB with their absolutely colossal new album The Great Cessation. If you were a fan of masterful, thundering, sickening doom or the previous material by YOB or Middian/Age Eternal, this album is HIGHLY recommended... possibly their best LP yet? The Great Cessation is currently on sale at the Profound Lore, and the band recently was interviewed by Hellbound.

The brutal band with the awesome name, Weekend Nachos, are hitting the road at the end of August and into September bludgeoning the Northeast with dates including Rockstar Bar on Sept 4th! The band is currently supporting their new LP Unforgivable out now at your favorite distro or via the band. Check out "A Few Blocks South" from Unforgivable and make sure and get out to Rockstar Bar on 9/4, if you ain't chicken.

Cave In is BACK officially with the release of the Planets of Old 12", and the song "Retina Sees Rewind" available now on iTunes! The ultra-limited 12" is available July 28th, and in much larger numbers at their comeback show on July 19th in Allston, MA.

Maryland Deathfest has announced the inital 2010 lineup and.... whoooa nelly!

Nadja & BBA Out now via 20 Buck Spin, the collaborative LP between Nadja & Black Boned Angel. Black Boned Angel is probably best known as the alter-ego of Campbell Kneale of Birchville Cat Motel, who collaborated with Nadja over 2+ years to create the three tracks which formed this LP, as well as the Christ Send Light EP. The graphic artwork is very indicative of the collaborative spirit of the LP as well, as it is also a collaboration between revered artists Stephen Kasner and David D'Andrea. Check out a snippet of one of the tracks on the LP above. Also out now, BBA's new LP Verdun available via Riot Season.

Union Pool has gone metal! Besides the previously mentioned Dysrhythmia show and the Hull / Giant Squid / Grayceon shindig, the venue has also lined up a few other notable shows in the coming months including the mighty Atomic Bitchwax on August 1, f'n Cable on August 15th (3 days before the release of The Failed Convict), and finally Neurot signees It's Casual on August 23rd. Full Cable tour dates are below. Stream the new Dysrhythmia album, Psychic Maps, here.

Baroness have completed work on their new album due in October via Relapse Records!

Burnt By the Sun are preparing their FINAL album for release, Heart Of Darkness due on August 18th via Relapse Records. Check out "Inner Station" available for download above, which is also on the Relapse Contamination 2009 comp available for $5.99 on iTunes. The band has scheduled a gang of Euro-dates, but none in the US so far... although with Dave Witte gearing up to release Municipal Waste's Massive Aggressive, I'm guessing it might be a while.

Check out a video interview with Municipal Waste, live video of Saint Vitus, as well as a new project featuring Chris Colohan of Cursed, Pentagram, Burzum, 3 Inches Of Blood, Kayo Dot, and much more as This Week In Metal Continues...

WITTR

Happy New Year and Welcome Back to The Week In Metal! We took some time away, but believe me, the hate only grew STRONGER.

Wolves In The Throne Room have emerged from the dark forests of the Pacific Northwest to announce a pair of new releases and drop more details on their previously announced upcoming live LP, Live At Roadburn 08! First up, the Malevolent Grain EP will hit Southern Lord with a 180-gram LP bang, with Conspiracy Records dropping a small pressing of picture discs for the record (a limited batch of CDs will be available on tour). Then on March 31st, the band will drop Black Cascade their new full-length on Southern Lord! Both Malevolent Grain and Black Cascade were recorded by Randall Dunn/Mell Dettmer and are the first to feature new guitarist (former touring member) Will Lindsay of ex-Middian / Age Eternal fame. In addition, WITTR's Live at Roadburn 08 will be released with a companion DVD available with the first pressing of 500 copies, with 150 coming in gold vinyl with a silkscreen. Full WITTR tour dates are below, including their date at Scion Rock Fest.

Shrinebuilder
Shrinebuilder

Shrinebuilder is in progress! The band blogged through the weekend as they completed recording of their debut album for Neurot.

The previously announced Down/Weedeater/Evil Army tour has been postponed.

With a tagline like "2 stages + 2 days = Total Brutality", you better f'n deliver. That said, The LA Murder Fest will turn those sunny California skies black on May 9th & 10th when Coffins, Landmine Marathon, Ghoul, Stormcrow, Agenda of Swine, and Lack of Interest hit the stages of The Knitting Factory in Hollywood! Also on the bill are sickening sludgemeisters -16-, who's new record Bridges To Burn drops on Jan 20th. Malkuth, an absolutely killer black metal band featuring members of No Neck Blues Band, have scheduled a show on 1/25 at Public Assembly with Villians, Castevet, and Ipsissimus. Malkuth recently released Mutus Liber out on Hospital Productions and are prepping their second LP for the label.

Converge have scheduled a show at Europa on March 27th! Tickets are on sale. Converge has been added to the Scion Rock Festival in Atlanta... yet one more reason to go! (Thanks Chris!)

Also recently added at Europa, Young Widows will team up with The Austerity Program, My Disco, and Tournament for a show on April 1st! Ticket info is forthcoming, full Young Widows tour dates below. Tournament is lined up to play with Kylesa, Tombs, and Black Anvil at The Charleston.

Satyricon's new record The Age of Nero drops on Jan 13th via KOCH Records, and I have to say that I definitely enjoyed it a hell of alot more than Now, Diabolical. Check out the video for "Black Crow On a Tombstone" below and dig on "The Sign Of The Trident", which the band has made available for download above! Satyricon will hit the road opening for Cradle of Filth at Starland Ballroom on Jan 15th (tix here) and have scheduled an NYC date at Nokia Theater on Feb 27th (tix here).
