LA rapper Nocando, who hosts the Low End Theory hip hop night and founded the Hellfyre Club label, is releasing a new album, Jimmy the Burnout, on March 18 via his own label, and he's just released a single from it, "Lucid Dream." The track sees Nocando impressively flowing over a funky Dam-Funk beat, and singer Piatra Hawkins flirts with indie-R&B on the airy chorus. It's a solid track, and can be streamed below.
Nocando is currently on the road for the Hellfyre Club-presented 'Dorner vs Tookie' tour which also includes Busdriver, Open Mike Eagle and Milo. That tour hits NYC on March 6 at Mercury Lounge. Tickets are available. List of all dates and tour flyer below.
Dam-Funk has a few upcoming dates too, including a free NYC show happening on March 7 at Brooklyn Night Bazaar with Maya Vik, Gordon Voidwell and DJ Thanksgiving Brown. Like all BKNB shows, it's no cost to enter and watch the music, and there's also tons of not-free food, drinks, shopping, and games. All of his dates are listed below too.

Deltron 3030 aren't the only alternative hip hop group making a long-awaited comeback this year. Bay Area duo Latyrx (aka Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truth Speaker) are planning to release the followup to their sole album, 1997's The Album, on November 5. The album, appropriately titled The Second Album, features guest appearances by Zion I, Busdriver, The GIft of Gab, Corey Glover (of Living Colour), and more, in addition to production by tUnE-yArDs, Chris Funk (of The Decemberists), Jel (of Anticon), and more.
The album's newest single is the laid back cut "Exclamation Point" (produced by and featuring Forrest Day), which is out today and makes its premiere in this post. Check it out, along with the video for another track "Gorgeous Spirits (Aye, Let's Go!)," album artwork, tracklist and list of tour dates (none in NYC), below...
Aesop Rock in Austin in 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
Hip hop producer RJD2, who was last in NYC for a New Year's Eve show, will be playing a few US shows this month, including a return to NYC this Saturday (2/9) at Brooklyn Bowl. Tickets for the Brooklyn show are on sale now. All RJD2 dates are listed below.
That show is the same day that fellow Def Jux associate Aesop Rock plays his previously discussed NYC show at Irving Plaza (2/9), which is part of his tour with Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz, and Busdriver. Tickets for the NYC show are still available. He recently had to postpone some dates on that tour due to a broken rib, but he's since recovered and has rescheduled those shows. An updated list of his upcoming dates is below. Aesop is also one of the few rappers playing Coachella.
In related news, Illogic (who is a member of Greenhouse Effect along with Blueprint, who is a member of Soul Position along with RJD2) and Blockhead (who has contributed production to much of Aesop Rock's discography) are set to release their first collaborative album, Capture The Sun, on April 16 via Man Bites Dog Records. The album will feature guest spots from Slug, Blueprint, and Abstract Rude. The album art is below. The duo haven't released any music from the album yet, but Illogic did upload two free EPs to his bandcamp that he did with Blockhead to "prepare for Capture." You can stream both EPs below or download them at bandcamp (name your price).

Aesop Rock in Austin in 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
As mentioned, Aesop Rock was set to kick off a tour this month, which included some rescheduled dates that he had to cancel due to Hurricane Sandy. Now, he's unfortunately had to cancel some shows again, this time due to a broken rib. However, his East Coast shows in February, including the NYC show on February 9 at Irving Plaza, are still on. Tickets for the NYC show are still available.
Support on the tour comes from Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz, and Busdriver. A list of all cancelled dates and another list of all remaining ones, along with the video for "Cycles to Gehenna," are below. We hope you have a quick recovery, Aesop!

Aesop Rock in Austin in August (more by Tim Griffin)
Aesop Rock released one of the best (and by the looks of these year end lists, apparently underrated) hip hop albums of the year with Skelethon, his first solo release since 2007's None Shall Pass and easily his strongest since at least 2003's Bazooka Tooth. He supported that record with a tour which did make it to NYC, but had to be cut short due to Hurricane Sandy. He's rescheduled dates in many of the cities he cancelled on his recently-announced 2013 tour, which also hits NYC for a show on February 9 at Irving Plaza. The tour is with Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz, and Busdriver. Tickets for the Irving Plaza show are on sale now.
In honor of the new year, Aesop Rock revealed a previously unreleased song from the Blockhead-produced days around year 2000. The track is called "Hall of Game" and you can download it for free, plus check out a list of all tour dates, below.

Kitty Pryde at BV-CMJ 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
If you noticed back in September that Kitty Pryde made a facebook status saying, "just finished my christmas song for sufjan stevens....................(:" and you were like, "WTF does that sound like?!" now you can find out! Sufjan's free Christmas rap mixtape, Chopped and Scrooged (yeah, we did just say "Sufjan's free Christmas rap mixtape"), is out now and can be downloaded above or streamed below. Other contributors to the album include the now-defunct Das Racist, Busdriver, Nicky Da B, Son Lux, John Dietrich (of Deerhoof), Fol Chen, and more.
This release is in addition to Sufjan's massive Christmas box set which is out now. And as mentioned he brings his Christmas tour to NYC on December 21 and 22 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for both shows go on sale Wednesday, December 19 at noon.

As recently mentioned, Modeselektor will be back this summer as part of the Identity Festival that hits both Jones Beach and PNC Bank Arts Center. According to the listed lineup, they will be playing "live" at those dates. Their most recent trip to North America also had them DJing. A full list of dates is below.
In October, we get a new album: "Monkeytown (most likely a ten-track album) features collaborations with a slew of special guests, including Thom Yorke on two songs, Busdriver, PVT, Anti Pop Consortium, and Miss Platnum. It will be released on September 30th in Germany, October 3rd in the UK, and October 4th in the USA. There will be no album pre-singles, however, there will be 3 or 4 singles following the album."
"Monkeytown" is also the name of Modeselektor's record label which has been releasing Siriusmo albums including a new one that collects 42 tracks that were released individually between 2000-2010. Siriusmo was also just here with Modeselektor when they played Mutek and Webster Hall as part of their "Modeselektion" nights. Modeselektion is also the name of a compilation series they're releasing on the label.
Speaking of Thom Yorke,
"The Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke played a secret DJ set after the band's surprise appearance at the Glastonbury Festival at the weekend.Thom also played "Kill Bill Vol. 4" by Modeselektor. Full list below...
The singer hit the decks alongside the band's long-time producer Nigel Godrich in the Shangri-La area of the festival site at Worthy Farm, Somerset.
Songs in their set included Major Lazer's 'Pon Da Floor' and 'Undoing The Laces' by Nathan Fake - you can see the rest below courtesy of Yorke." [Gigwise]
Daedelus at LPR (more by Chris Doss)
South by Southwest isn't the only major music fest that goes down in March. Ultra Music Festival happens a few days later in Maimi, and the now-sold out, three-day party features a giant lineup of electro acts, many who hit NYC right before or after.
Their lineup includes Duran Duran (who is also playing SXSW), Crystal Castles (who have a show coming up at Terminal 5), The Klaxons, (who play Webster Hall), Trentemoller (who plays MHoW soon), Cut Copy (who plays T5 in triplicate), Royksopp (who plays MHOW and Webster Hall), ... the list goes on and on and includes Daedelus.
Los Angeles DJ and producer Daedelus will play a Brooklyn show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 2nd. Tickets are currently on AmEx presale, and go on regular sale Friday at noon (3/10). Daedelus is also playing SXSW and many other places as part of the 'Magical Properties 3 Tour'. The full list of his dates and openers is below.
Daedelus's new LP Bespoke is due in North America on April 26th via Ninja Tune Records and includes guest appearances by Baths, Busdriver and many others. RCRD LBL has the track with Bilal. Check out the tracklisting, some videos and all tour dates, below...

Greg on stage with Deerhoof (more by Chris Gersbeck)
We already knew that we could catch the very talented Greg Saunier of Deerhoof at one of two upcoming NYC shows (Ridgewood Masonic Temple on 2/8 with Buke & Gass and Le Poisson Rouge on 3/14-tickets), but we can also see the Deerhoof trapsman extraordinaire THIS FRIDAY, 2/17, at Bruar Falls. It doesn't look like Saunier will be behind the kit though, but he will be manning the drums... on a drum machine if the billing of the show is correct. Bruar Falls lists it as "SARA MAGENHEIMER (WOOM) AND GREG SAUNIER (DEERHOOF) DRUM MACHINE IMPROV DUO. The show kicks off at 8PM and will also feature sets by The Psyched and Antimagic. WOOM won't play the show, but they do have dates coming up elsewhere which are listed below. All Deerhoof dates are in a previous post.
This is not the first time Woom and Deerhoof will have collaborated either...
Last July the duo WOOM released their debut album, Muu's Way. Since then, word of mouth has been spreading about the chaotic, tender, startlingly original world the album creates. The band's reputation has grown slowly but persistently at the edge of visibility, like a slime mold spreading across the parking lot of modern independent pop music. So who is it listening to WOOM? Well, take for example some of their biggest fans: the musicians featured on this new release, Muu's Way Remixed.Listen to the whole EP on Soundcloud. Download Greg Saunier's take on "Quetzalcoatl's Ship" above. Full tracklist, and WOOM's new video for "The Hunt", is below.
Deerhoof's Greg Saunier takes on the underwater pop splash "Quetzalcoatl's Ship". Adding stuttering distorted drums, his version rolls the song like an over-ripe melon down a rocky hill in the hot sun. His longtime collaborators, Xiu Xiu, have a remarkably different take on the same song, chopping and looping to create a moody piece of midnight electro-minimalist doom.
BJ Warshaw (Parts and Labor, Shooting Spires) turns "The Hunt" (human-breath-based dance beat) into a psychedelic trash-can rave-up. Lucky Dragons ease the album's political-sleeper-love-song "Judith" into a pastoral latin-bumping cloud of rain. Talk Normal flip folk-concrete "Backwards Beach" into a no-wave sing-a-long. Meanwhile, Japanther get mellow with "Salt" and Butchy Fuego (Pit er Pat, The Boredoms) invents a new genre ("Woombia") for "Back In."
In related news, the "driver" half of Deerhoof's "Hoofdriver" project (that 7" is out now) will play two nights at Southpaw as part of "Search And Restore & Manhattan New Music presents...4 nights of Kneebody". Kneebody's four night residency will feature two sets from the band each night, and will take place on 1/26 -1/29 with Wayne Krantz on the first night (tickets), Busdriver on board for the second night (tickets), Busdriver & Mark Guiliana on the third (tickets), and Daedelus on the final night (tickets).
It's not the first time that Kneebody and Busdriver have collaborated for a show or on stage; in fact, the pair were in NYC in February for Kneebody's four day residency at Bleecker St Theater. Videos of the two artists playing together are below.
If you can't make it to catch Daedelus at Southpaw, you can still catch him support Lotus with Tobacco at Terminal 5 on February 5th. Tickets are on sale. Lotus is also on board to play Mercury Lounge the night before, and tickets to that show are currently on sale as a package with the Terminal 5 tickets.

Deerhoof at Paramount Theatre in Boston on October 10th
"Drummer/mastermind Greg Saunier -- in purple pants and bright green sneakers -- bashed at his tiny drum kit as though he were swatting bees (whether there was a song in progress or not), and vocalist/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki busted out callisthenic dance moves between her polyglot chirps. Guitarists John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez were appropriately centered, braiding jagged melodies together in errant knots that ultimately held each song tight." [Boston.com]Deerhoof play Le Poisson Rouge TONIGHT (10/13) with Father Murphy and TALIBAM!. The NYC show is the close of a larger tour that was mostly with Xiu Xiu. Deerhoof's only remaining show after tonight at ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas in Minehead, UK (with Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Throbbing Gristle, Neurosis, and others). Tickets to the LPR show are still available. ATP in Minehead is sold out.
Da 'hoof currently has two releases on deck for the coming months. The first is the Deerhoof/Physical Forms - Hoofdriver split 7" due on 11/6, which features Busdriver singing over a Deerhoof instrumental while the flip features him backed by members of The Mae Shi as Physical Forms. Preorder that split and check out "On The Brink" by Physical Forms above.
Deerhoof will also release their new album Deerhoof vs. Evil on January 25th! The new record will see release on LP/CD (preorder via Polyvinyl) and limited cassette (500 copies with digital download on Joyful Noise) formats. Dig on "The Merry Barracks" above.
Most dates Deerhoof played in October have been with Father Murphy and Xiu Xiu, one of which was at the Paramount Theatre in Boston on October 10th.
"If you're wondering how the sound is at the restored Paramount Theatre: It's amazing. You hear everything. During Sunday evening's inaugural rock show for the theater, when I went to jot down a line from Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart -- "thinking of her dream makes her feel like it's stupid,'' from "Dr. Troll'' -- the click of my pen echoed like I'd dropped a phonebook." [Boston.com]Pictures from that show adorn this post.
Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof played their last show together last night, 10/12, at Daniel Street in Connecticut, and though Xiu Xiu does not play the NY show tonight, Xiu Xiu will play their own show at Maxwell's in Hoboken on Friday (10/15), and many other dates after that. Tickets for Maxwell's are still available.

Last week Squarepusher made me really happy. He is the king of electronic music for me....And Mr. Squarepusher is so gorgeous! And fat sound! I was thinking about our sick military world, the omnipresent consumption, the insanity of humanity.. But out of this, I started becoming creative. I got ideas for my new project BE, colors and designs for ellen allien fashion where whirling through my head. Music enables my creativity and brings charm into my life. In the last months I spent too much time with pushing my label BPitch Control, instead of doing music. But now the path is ready for doing music on my own, finally. :)Ellen Allien's BPitch Control label is releasing the self-titled debut LP by Moderat, a combo group of Modeselektor and Apparat, on April 21st. Moderat will play a Saturday, May 30th NYC show at Webster Hall, as part of a brief end-of-May US tour. All dates below.
See you on the dance floor. :) -[Ellen Allien on her site]
Ellen Allien toured with Modeselektor in '08 (w/ a Studio B-turned Highline Ballroom date), and collaborated with Apparat on the Orchestra of Bubbles LP in 2006. Modeselektor was last here in January when they played Bowery Ballroom.
The Moderat LP was to feature a guest spot by L.A. rapper Busdriver on the song "BeatsWaySick," but, the press release says, "due to legal issues at the time of manufacturing, [the track] will be released as an exclusive download in the near future." Busdriver is playing SXSW on Thursday, March 19 at The Independent and Friday, March 20 at Back Alley Social, with other Austin dates below.
Ellen Allien's "10 Years of BPitch" tour is set to next visit NYC on Friday, March 27th at Studio B where she'll share a bill with Thomas Muller and Gui Boratto). The night is presented by FIXED, the parties-hosting team of JDH (Josh Houtkin) and Dave P (David Pianka). Tickets are available for the show, with the option to buy a 3-day package that includes March 26th's Ladyhawke with Heartsrevolution show and March 28th's The Twelves & Yuksek (dj set) gig, both also at Studio B.
The three-day ticket and 10-years-of-Bpitch also coincide with FIXED's fourth birthday.
The FIXED party was conceptualized around 2003 after JDH took the amazing 2ManyDJ lads to one of Dave P's Making Time parties in Philadelphia. After JDH and Dave realized that they were spinning the same events together and both had mutual admiration for the music they were DJing out at parties, the idea for FIXED was born. The status of Studio B as a venue has been in question for a while, but not to worry...
"We just seemed to play a lot together as we liked similar music," admits JDH. "We started booking gigs around the US, Canada and Europe, and we would both go, and they would end up saying, 'Well, why don't we just book you two together as DJs?' and that's pretty much how we play now... as one set."
Establishing their first home base at the Tribeca Grand Hotel, FIXED went on to host a number of legendary and groundbreaking performances from a number of critically-acclaimed acts, including 2ManyDJs, Hot Chip, The Rapture, Mylo, and Erol Alkan.
"We always say that our biggest influence for FIXED was the Trash party [UK DJ Erol Alkan's legendary weekly party], which sadly, doesn't go on anymore," says JDH. "We wanted to do a big club night for the average person who likes good music."
The venue has now re-opened under new management, and [JDH and Dave P] will be expanding their vision of exciting music bookings, while also revitalizing New York's nightlife scene with a top-notch and diverse team of live music bookers and promoters. Starting this March, expect a fresh mix of dance music, hip-hop parties, live shows, curated special events, and more.Little Boots played Studio B on February 6. All future FIXED dates, tour dates, the Moderat tracklist, and Ellen Allien videos below...
Tyvek just played three NYC shows, three nights in a row (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). And I just realized that Damon from Tyvek (who apparently didn't actually play with Tyvek at any of those shows) is now here with his other band Puffy Areolas, who played Cake Shop last night (1/12), are on WFMU today (1/13) ("For the uninitiated, Toldeo, Ohio's Puffy Areolas bring to mind the blasted, parental hope one would get from combining the DNA of The Germs, Hawkwind, Drunks With Guns, and Brainbombs. Tune in to Brian today to hear the Areolas sew some serious lysergic oats, and have a glimpse at what kinda world we'd live in if Dame Edna was in charge of putting DMT into the water supply."), and play again in Brooklyn tonight with Drunkdriver, Golden Error, Predator Vision, and a mysterious "Chinese Restaurants" ("Loy's band. "We'll bring the ugly. All Doors covers." - LOY HQ")...
