Moogfest

"One needn't be among the electronic music faithful to take away positive feelings toward Moogfest, Asheville's yearly electronic mecca. Since migrating from a single-night event in New York City to what was arguably the cradle of electronic music innovation after being settled by Robert Moog, Moogfest has been as edifying as it is entertaining. Few festivals defy their attendees to completely reassess how they listen to music in the way that a weekend at Moogfest does. The gray matter-frying, booty-shaking synth jams raged until early morning all across downtown Asheville, but oftentimes the lessons in musical futurology were just as fulfilling." [Yes Weekly]
Moog Fest 2011 continued on Saturday, 10/29, in North Carolina, this time featuring appearances from Crystal Castles, The Flaming Lips, Amon Tobin, Suicide, Battles, St. Vincent, Toro Y Moi, and many, many others, but no YACHT, who were forced to cancel their appearance due to flight problems in Mexico. Pictures from some of the artists on that second day are in this post (first photo set HERE), and continue below...

CANT @ Mercury Lounge (more)
CANT

NYC-based Grizzly Bear side project enthusiasts have a decision to make tonight (10/25). Will it be Chris Taylor's band CANT at Bowery Ballroom, or the rare appearance by Department of Eagles member Fred Nicolaus at Zebulon. If your criteria is strictly "member of Grizzly Bear", then Bowery definitely wins (tickets are still on sale). If it's the price, well then Zebulon (always free) comes out on top.

Luke Temple of Here We Go Magic and Blood Orange aka Dev aka Lightspeed Champion who also plays in CANT, also play Bowery. Zebulon also has Glass Ghost and Little Women.

Considering their set time was 1am last night (8/30), I guess technically CANT played their debut show at Mercury Lounge today (8/31). Backed by three band members including Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange who also opened the free Spotify-sponsored show, Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor ran through a set of R&B infused songs we'll get to hear studio versions of soon. His debut album Dreams Come True is out September 13 via Terrible Records. I can never remember song names but BQ points out he loved "Answer," "Bericht" and "The Edge." You can watch audience video footage of "She Found A Way Out" and "Bang" below.

Missed the show and can't wait until October to see CANT? Chris Taylor and Co just announced another NYC show happening TONIGHT (8/31) at Glasslands with Steel Phantoms (Album Release Party) and Quinn Walker (from Suckers).

More pictures from last night (Blood Orange coming later), and those videos, below...

Blood Orange @ PS1 on 8/20 (more by Erez Avissar)
Blood Orange

One of the many casualties of Irene was the free Spotify-sponsored CANT/Blood Orange show that was supposed to happen at Mercury Lounge on Sunday. Luckily that show had no trouble rescheduling and will now take place this Tuesday, August 30th. Doors for the free late-night show are at 11:30pm. Expect CANT to hit the stage around 1am. As previously mentioned, this will be CANT (aka Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear)'s NYC live debut.

CANT's debut record, Dreams Come True, is out on September 13th on Chris's own Terrible Records. You can listen to two songs, "Answer" and "Believe", now on Spotify.

The last free Spotify show featured The Suzan, Exitmusic and a headlining set by Oberhofer who, in addition to having a bunch of songs streaming on Spotify, also made a Spotify playlist that you can listen to if you have the application.

Oberhofer's next NYC appearance has also been announced. Catch them opening for Les Savy Fav, along with Chron Turbine, at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Tuesday, September 6th. Tickets are still on sale.

You can also catch CANT at Music Hall of Williamsburg, but only DJing, on September 13th. CANT and Blood Orange head out on a tour in October that hits Bowery Ballroom on October 25th.

Speaking of Exitmusic, they have a new video for "The Hours" which you can watch below...

Mercury Lounge has cancelled/postponed all Saturday & Sunday shows including Joe Pernice and what was to be CANT's NYC debut show on Sunday.

826NYC, the non-profit writing center for NYC students, is teaming up with Bowery to present 'The Prom You Were Promised: A Benefit for 826NYC' at Music Hall of Williamsburg on September 13. The event is designed to recreate a prom night with formal attire and DJ sets by Yeasayer, BAIO (of Vampire Weekend), Neon Indian, and CANT (Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear) (they're all DJ sets). It will be hosted by Jason Sudeikis of SNL. Tickets are on sale now.

You can also catch CANT (the actual band, not a DJ set) for free at the free Spotify show with Blood Orange at Mercury Lounge on Sunday (8/28).

CANT

The solo project of Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor aka CANT will head out on tour in October that includes the previously-announced NYC show at Bowery Ballroom on October 25th. Tickets are still on sale, but you won't have to wait that long to see CANT in Manhattan. CANT will play a free, late night, Spotify-sponsored Terrible Records showcase at Mercury Lounge on August 28th with Blood Orange (who also open all dates on the tour). Doors are at 9pm. First come, first served. Everyone who shows up will get a Spotify invite, and it will be CANT's first-ever NYC show.

Meanwhile head to Mercury Lounge at 10pm on August 25th for the next free Spotify show with Oberhofer, Exitmusic and The Suzan.

CANT's album Dreams Come True is out on September 13 via Terrible Records. The second single "Believe" is streaming below along with all dates...

CANT

In 2009, Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor put out first single "Ghosts" under his solo moniker CANT (MP3 above). He's now set to release his first full length for the project, Dreams Come True (which "Ghosts" is not on). The album comes out on September 13 on Chris' own Terrible Records (that he started with Ethan Silverman). George Lewis Jr. of Twin Shadow, whose debut album Forget was produced by Chris Taylor and released on Terrible Records, collaborates with Chris on the new album.

A full tour is about to be announced and that includes a NYC show at Bowery Ballroom on October 25. Tickets for it go on sale Friday (6/24) at noon.

The October tour also includes a Detroit show, a Cambridge, MA show, and Moogfest in Asheville, NC. All dates TBA.

Twin Shadow, who also play Moogfest, have their own upcoming tour too. They'll play Maxwell's on September 6 and Webster Hall on October 7. Tickets go on sale Thursday (6/23) at 9 PM for the Maxwell's show and Friday (6/24) at noon for the Webster Hall show.

Suicide

The initial lineup is out for this year's Moogfest, which is taking place in Asheville, NC on October 28-30. This year's lineup has some pretty impresive names including three pioneers of electronic music; Tangerine Dream, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Suicide, who are performing their highly influential 1977 self titled debut album in its entirety. The Flaming Lips, Crystal Castles, Little Dragon, Passion Pit, Toro y Moi, Chromeo, Austra, M83, Tim Hecker, and many others on there too. Tickets go on sale Saturday (6/4) at noon. Check out the full initial lineup and a video below.
