"The Bad Brains are those of an extremely influential American all-black hardcore punk and reggae band, originally formed in Washington, D.C. in 1977. They are widely considered the pioneers of hardcore punk." [Wikipedia]

Its either the horrible weather, or just general exhaustion that keeps me missing so many shows I mean to go to lately. One such show was "Jesse Malin (who just announced a new album) + special guests" last night at Continental. Were you there? If so, wWhat happened? I just found this:
...jesse was awesome, his keyboard player / harmony vocalist rocks. we saw a bit of his d generation bandmate's set, and saw one song with a guy from bad brains, but we got tired and took off... i'm sure the show went till 3am with tons of special-er guests..." [Myspace Blog]
And speaking of extinct clubs and Bad Brains, this is coming to CD and DVD:
Bad Brains – Live CBGB 1982 displays why Bad Brains became one of the most important bands in the history of American Hardcore. On Christmas Eve 1982, Bad Brains began their three-day stint at a Hardcore Festival hosted by legendary CBGB. This DVD represents the very best of these shows, culled from over 4 hours of footage. Their live performances were legendary, their visual recordings were impossible to find. Now, for the first time on DVD, that powerful performance is revisited in extraordinary fashion.
There's a $3.00 screening at at Southpaw in Brooklyn on Tuesday, September 19th at 9pm. There's a preview clip on YouTube. All screenings everywhere, and more CD/DVD info, below....
NYC/NJ band RANA helped try to save CBGB last year. Now they'll help close it down. They play there tonight (Sept 13, 2006) for the last time - with Sounds of Greg D (featuring Ween's bass player Dave Dreiwitz and members of Rana, Sam Champion and Rufus Wainwright's band), and Dave Drewitz's other project Crescent Moon.
Check out RANA's 2-disk live@CBGB CD for sale at CD Baby

"Former MANOWAR guitarist Ross The Boss will help 'close down' two legendary New York City venues this fall. For two special shows fans will get to see an almost-all-THE DICTATORS reunion (and/or MANITOBA'S WILD KINGDOM) with living legends:
Handsome Dick Manitoba (THE DICTATORS, MANITOBA'S WILD KINGDOM)
Ross The Boss (THE DICTATORS, MANOWAR, MANITOBA'S WILD KINGDOM, THUNDERBOSS)
JP Thunderbolt Patterson (THE DICTATORS, MANITOBA'S WILD KINGDOM, THUNDERBOSS)
Dean Rispler (MURPHY'S LAW, THUNDERBOSS)
THE DATES
Sep. 17 - New York City, NY @ The Continental (the last show ever)
Oct. 06 - New York City, NY @ CBGB (the last show we know about @ CBGB as of this post)

At first I thought maybe the new date CBGB has listed for the Agnostic Front show was a mistake - it went from September 24th to October 1st (one day after the previously announced closing date of September 30th). An article on Pollstar seems to back this up though: "A team of 'experts' will remove the bars, toilets, etc. in late October after a final gig with Patti Smith, Kristal said."
So far the "downstairs lounge" show on September 30th is still listed as "closing night". Who knows.
Patti Smith also played CBGB on May 1, 2005.
DROPKICK MURPHY'S @ CBGB | Aug 18, 2006 (CRED)

Tickets are on sale for the September 1st Fearless Vampire Killers show.
Singer/songwriter/rocker Pete Yorn celebrates the release of Nightcrawler, his first new studio album in three years.
Pete Yorn scored one of the last shows ever at CBGB - he's playing on September 14, 2006 to be exact. He's also playing Mercury Lounge and Joe's Pub the two days prior, and some shows in Chicago and LA. The new album is streaming at VH1. All dates below...

"As a side note, CBGB's - which we are very sad to see go, is apparently going with a lot of money made from these shows. As an example, we had a good tunrout on Monday yet they left us with a total of $25 to pay the three bands with. That's $2.27 per band member. That's so punk rock." [Gothamist]
UNCLE MONK

The last surviving founding member of the Ramones Tommy Ramone plays bluegrass with Claudia Tienan of the Simplistics. They call themselves Uncle Monk.
The Continental changed their mind about Murphy's Law playing the last show ever at the club. Tickets are now on sale for THE REAL LAST SHOW ("this is it!") on September 17. 2006. Its "a full Ramones set" by Ramones producer Daniel Rey, Ramones bassist (1989-1996) CJ Ramone, Radio host and lead singer of the The Dictators Handsome Dick Manitoba (also own's Manitoba's bar), Walter Lure (Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers), and Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith group). No Tommy Ramone at this one, but then again it does say "special guests". (thx Klaus)
The lineup for the night of September 17th at CBGB has yet to be announced, but speaking of Lenny Kaye - he'll be the special guest at CBGB's Gallery on September 8th. He goes on at 10pm after Carla Rhodes. Mad Juana are on at midnight.

CBGB's last night in NYC will be September 30, 2006. So far the closest-to-last show we know about on the main stage is Dub Trio and Fishbone on September 28th, but the September 30th lineup of bands (I never heard of) playing CBGB's Downstairs Lounge has been revealed:

REAGAN YOUTH @ CBGB IN 1983 (MORE)

In yet another strange punk/hardcore reunion move, Reagan Youth are getting back together to play a show with Agent Orange at CBGB on September 23rd. I say it's weird because, sadly, their heroin-addicted singer Dave Rubinstein commited suicide in 1993 after his prostitute girlfriend was killed by a serial killer and his mother was killed in a car accident (true story). Tickets are on sale.
Hatebreed are playing CBGB on August 30th. You can get a ticket by pre-ordering their new CD.

Here's a last minute heads-up (or reminder) that Apollo Sunshine (who opened for Deerhoof and Beirut at the Pool yesterday) and Sam Champion (who the blogoshphere loves) are playing CBGB tonight (Aug 14, 2006). [8:30 - SC, 9:30 - AS]
CBGB closes for good on September 30th. If you don't like punk rock or hardcore, and you're looking for an excuse to go one last (or first) time, tonight would be a good time to do it.
"The Avengers were a San Francisco based punk band in the first wave of American punk......The Avengers opened for the Sex Pistols in San Francisco for their final show at Winterland, and their 4-song EP was produced by Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols.......The CD "The American in Me" released in 2004, has 4 studio tracks, and 8 live tracks recorded at the Old Waldorf in 1979 . With the release of the new CD, vocalist Penelope Houston has joined with original guitarist Greg Ingraham to bring the Avengers back to life, completing the line-up with bassist Joel Reader and drummer Luis Illades. The new group is sometimes called the "scAvengers", and is playing a few select shows on the West Coast and the UK....." [Wikipedia]
Penelope is calling the group the Avengers again, and they're leaving the West Coast and UK to play CBGB (during it's last month) on September 8th. Listen at MySpace. All dates below...

The Circle Jerks were part of the 2005 benefit shows at CBGB, but so far they're not involved in the goodbye series. Instead they're touring with Pennywise which brings both bands to the Troc, Warsaw the Stone Pony, and Irving Plaza in October. All dates below...

"Agent Orange is a punk rock band from Fullerton, California. They were a surf-punk band from the 1980s and first gained attention with their song Bloodstains which they wrote for a local Orange County compilation album........................Agent Orange has had an enormous influence on the punk and hardcore scene, even though band members stated on Living in Darkness that "We don't feel a part of that scene at all." Agent Orange was one of the first bands to pioneer what would later be known as the skate-punk or skate-core scene. They developed a following in Fullerton along with The Adolescents. The band is still together today with few member changes. Their most recent album was in 2003 with Sonic Snake Session." [Wikipedia]
It's not that rare to see Agent Orange play - in fact they just played Continental last summer, but nonetheless they're an original (well one member is anyway) and they're playing CBGB one week before it closes for good on September 30th (well before it moves to Vegas).
