un-CMJ party at Saint Vitus, 2012

After a few days of utter CMJ madness, what better way to wash away your troubles than with Infinity Spaceship, the karaoke live band that specializes in punk/indie/hardcore and more. Perhaps due in part to the complimentary Raw Rev bars, Sailor Jerry's rum and PBR (both were free for a limited time) and a possible avoidance of hangover care of Mercy, the crowd at the BrooklynVegan un-CMJ party at Saint Vitus on 10/19 was more than ready to unwind by covering songs by Smashing Pumpkins, Minor Threat, Gorilla Biscuits and many others while backed by the current and former members of On the Might of Princes, No Way, Primitive Weapons, Nakatomi Plaza, Ghost Robot Ninja Bear and more.

It wasn't all covers and amateur hour though. The Saint Vitus shindig, one night before our metal show in the same venue, also featured a pair of performances including mind-blowing, gothic guitarist Kirin J Callinan and Toronto's precise, rhythmically-adept Absolutely Free. Pictures of both bands and the karaoke crowd are below...

BV-BBG CMJ Showcase at Saint Vitus
BV-BBG CMJ Showcase at Saint Vitus

Fueled by Sailor Jerry's spiced rum and PBR (both were free for a limited time), the BrooklynVegan - BBG CMJ showcase at Saint Vitus on 10/20 (a measly $5 door fee at the door if you didn't have a CMJ badge), sold-out the venue with an eclectic mix of bands that exemplified "heavy music" in many different ways: the searing post-rock/post-hardcore/black metal of Sannhet, brooding cello loops by Helen Money, crusty metallic-hardcore from Enabler, Am-Rep-y hardcore by Fight Amp, searing bluesy hard rock from Royal Thunder and experi-metal from Chicago's Yakuza (check out our recent interview with Bruce Lamont). It was all six bands' only CMJ show.

If you missed Royal Thunder (shame on you), you can still catch them on tour with COC.

Special thanks goes out to Saint Vitus, Sailor Jerry, PBR, Raw Rev and Mercy for help making the show a reality. More pictures and video from Saint Vitus, though unfortunately no pictures of the amazing Sannhet, below...

Kirin J Callinan

While we patiently await the arrival of Australia's Kirin J. Callinan to the US during/around CMJ, the spacey, gothic post-punk guitarist has graciously dropped off a new mixtapes of jams to peruse. Spanning thirteen tracks, check out that mixtape for the first time below.

Since we posted about him last, Kirin has added a few NYC shows while here for CMJ. He'll play a live taping of "ESP TV" at Interstate Projects on Saturday (10/13) with Narcissister, Black Marble, Haribo, and Paul Haney.

Then during CMJ, he'll play the Terrible Records CMJ Party with LE1FTrue and Regal Degal at Glasslands on 10/16 (tickets); and another Terrible Records party at Shea Stadium on 10/18 with Mirror Mirror, Regal Degal and New Look which is $8 and all-ages.

Then on Monday, October 22 he'll play Bowery Electric with Jack Ladder And The Dreamlanders, Kirin J Callinan, Plastic Flowers, The Dreebs, and Arc & Stones.

Mixtape stream and those dates in list form are below.

Yakuza at Gramercy, October 2010 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Yakuza

I am proud to announce the official BV-BBG CMJ showcase, going down in Brooklyn at Saint Vitus on October 20th! The show will feature six bands, all of which will be exclusive to this show:

Saint Vitus, Brooklyn, NY October 20, 2012:
Yakuza (only East Coast appearance)
Royal Thunder
Fight Amp
Enabler
Helen Money
Sannhet
Headlined by avant-garde metal favorites Yakuza featuring frontman Bruce Lamont, the show marks the band's first appearance in NYC in two years, this time to celebrate the release of their new LP Beyul, due on 10/16 via Profound Lore. Royal Thunder's return engagement is their first since a jaw-dropping appearance at Knitting Factory last month, and the noise-punk stylings of Fight Amp, the vicious crusty hardcore of Enabler, cello-explorations from Helen Money and Brooklyn post-rock/hardcore favorites Sannhet round out the night. Tickets are on sale and a paltry $5 or you can use your CMJ badge (a limited amount of badges will be let in, first come, first served).

While you're at the show, make sure and take advantage of the complimentary Pabst Blue Ribbon and Sailor Jerry rum, while supplies last, And take advantage of drink specials for both on through the night! Oh, and to save you afterwards, we'll also be serving free Mercy hangover prevention.

Listen to all the bands below...

Shakey Graves in Austin - 8/11/2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
Shakey Graves

The 2012 CMJ Festival is less than a month away and you can expect a bunch of announcements soon as to what BrooklynVegan has planned this year. Meanwhile here's one that involves our BV Austin site. The Convoy Group, Regressive Records, Eye in the Sky Collective, and BV Austin presents, along with Tito's Handmade Vodka, The Texas Takeover Party, which is an official and FREE CMJ event (with free Tito's until it runs out).

The party happens on Thursday, October 18 at Rebel NYC (251 W. 30th St.) and features an all-Texas line-up: Houston's Robert Ellis, Austin's Wild Child, Houston's The TonTons, Texas' Shakey Graves, Houston's Josiah Hall and Houston's New York City Queens.

The fun starts at 6 PM and CMJ badgeholders can just walk right in. Everyone else who wants to come should RSVP here.

For the Ton Tons, the show is part of a tour that also includes a CMJ show at Bowery Electric. A video by them and some from other artists on the bill, along with the Texas Takeover flyer, below...

CMJ

Here we go again, folks! I'm still not used to this CMJ starting on a Tuesday thing, even though it's been this way for a few years now. Personally, I'm going to ease into things today and tonight and save my energy. Luckily, there aren't a lot of day parties on Tuesday because five days and nights is just too much for locals, and visitors are just rolling into town and getting settled. But there are some... and it's eerily like last year.

Day parties are free unless noted otherwise, ok?

The Music Slut throws their annual day party at Pianos, with two floors of fun, including the hotly-tipped bands Chad Valley. Also: We Barbarians, The Beets, The Forms, Prussia, Jonquil and more. The action starts reasonably at 2PM.

A few doors down at The Living Room, Paper Garden Records is showing off its roster: Big Tree, Tall Ships, Pree and more.

Snowmine, Secret Mountains, Archie Powell & the Exports,  and more play Spike Hill.

Popstrangers

And Le Poisson Rouge is again throwing a CMJ kickoff party, somewhat in-between a day party and night showcase, with a bunch of New Zealand bands, including new Flying Nun signees Popstrangers (who have definitely studied their label's classic roster), returning band Street Chant (one of last year's highlights I thought), the shoegazy sounds of The Golden Awesome, Cairo Knife Fight and more. It's free with CMJ badges or if you RSVP to international@nzmusic.org.nz (no +1s).

Flyers for some of the above shows are after the jump.

CMJ

CMJ (like SXSW) is an annual NYC music festival that consists of many shows in all of the traditional venues. It takes place this year from October 21-25th. Broken Social Scene at Masonic Temple is a CMJ show. Crystal Castles / Fujiya & Miyagi / Who Made Who at Webster Hall is a CMJ show. They Might Be Giants at (le) poisson rouge is a CMJ show. Individual tickets are sold for those shows or you can attempt to get into them with your CMJ festival badge which also gets you into all the daytime panels (the educational stuff). CMJ officially announced the following today:
