CSS' fourth album is titled Planta and will be out June 11 via SQE Music. That's the cover art above. The Brazilian band, currently a quartet following the departure of Adriano Cintra, made the record in Los Angeles with Dave Sitek. The album's first single, "Hangover," is a definite departure than the band's previous new wave-y sound and you can stream it below.
Further connections between Sitek and CSS happen this weekend (5/10) as the group play ATP in Camber Sands, UK which is curated by TV on the Radio. No formal announcement on a North American tour has been made but one seems to be forthcoming as CCS will play NYC on July 8 at Bowery Ballroom and July 9 at Brooklyn Bowl. Both shows are with IO Echo.
Tickets to Bowery Ballroom and Brooklyn Bowl go on sale Friday (5/10) at noon with an AmEx presale for Bowery starting Wednesday (5/8) at noon.
UPDATE (5/13): There's a full tour now. All current tour dates are listed below.

Emmy the Great at BV-CMJ 2011 (more by Chris La Putt)

On May 7, Emmy the Great released a new single for the track "God of Loneliness," which was originally written for her 2011 Virtue LP but did not appear on the album and was since reworked. The single came out on Close Harbour in the UK and is backed by a cover of Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You." You can stream "God of Loneliness" below and also check out videos of performances of both songs at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall from this past March. She nails Hope Sandoval's breathy vocals in "Fade Into You" pretty well. (Hope Sandoval herself performed "Fade Into You" recently at 6 California shows).
In addition to the single, Emmy is planning to release an accompanying short film and remixes of "God of Loneliness" and a few Virtue cuts by Dan Le Sac, Dems, Banjo or Freakout, and CSS. There's also a series comic strips for "God of Loneliness" created by Paul Shinn, which feature the remixers as characters. Check out the strips with Banjo or Freakout and Dan Le Sac below. You can download the Banjo or Freakout, Dan Le Sac, and Dems remixes above, or stream those below.
"God of Loneliness" is available as an iTunes download but the Mazzy Star cover isn't included. The single will be included with the deluxe edition of Virtue, which is due out in the US on May 22. The deluxe edition also includes bonus tracks from the Virtue sessions, "Paper Forest (Birds)" and "Emily."
All videos, comic strips, and streams are below...

The tour concludes with a trio of dates in Texas this week (which means don't expect to see JD Samson in the crowd at Death By Audio tonight). Pictures from the CMJ show at Webster are in this post, and they continue below...

EMA at Mercury Lounge last week (more by Amanda Hatfield)

EMA just made a ton of noise on her tour that ended last week in Canada after NYC shows at Mercury and Glasslands. After a short break, she'll head back on the road for an international tour in September and October. Those new dates include opening slots on the recently announced Wild Beasts tour and the CSS tour with MEN. She'll open the CSS/MEN NYC date on October 22 at Webster Hall. Tickets are still on sale. (Note: that now means three bands on the bill with three letter all-caps names).

The last time we mentioned CSS, they had no North American dates announced. Since then, they've added a string of North American dates with fellow party starters MEN in October, including October 22 at Webster Hall. Tickets ($20 advanced) go on sale Friday (7/8) at noon. All dates are listed below.
CSS have a new single, "Hits Me Like A Rock," off their upcoming album La Liberacion. The track features Bobby Gillespie (of Primal Scream). Grab the MP3 and a Dillon Francis remix of the same track above.

CSS, no longer a Sub Pop band, are set to release their third full length La Liberación on August 22 via V2/Cooperative/Downtown. The album features contributions from Ratatat, Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream and Mike Garson (who provided piano on David Bowie's "Aladdin Sane"). Check out the new artwork and tracklist below.
CSS recently finished up a tour with Sleigh Bells, who also have an upcoming album in the works. They told Rolling Stone:
"Emotionally, it's a really heavy record," guitarist and producer Derek E. Miller says of the new tunes. "Even the early demos that we have now, a lot of the stuff that Derek has recorded, sounds more immense to me," says singer Alexis Krauss. "It sounds really huge, so there's going to still be tons of volume."Sleigh Bells play Bonnaroo this weekend and Lollapalooza later in the summer. CSS are keeping much more busy, though no more US dates to report yet..

Sleigh Bells @ La Zona Rosa

CSS and Sleigh Bells have been on the road since Coachella. In mid-May they finally reach NYC for THREE shows, all of which are now sold out. And though they have not added a fourth NYC show, tickets are on sale for an afterparty happening at Santos Party House on Thursday, May 12th. CSS are DJing it. Party host "Dark Disco" writes:
"Missed your chance to score tickets to the CSS show? Dark Diso is back this month as the OFFICIAL AFTER-PARTY featuring a CSS DJ SET!!! Sometimes you want to be surrounded by the beautiful people, the dangerous people, the smartest people, the creative people. The people who sometimes, shine a little more in the depths of darkness. Enter into a club where you can disappear and have the best night of your life. Where you can love and hate equally and then drink and dance it off. With lineups that are surprising, insightful, and always on the absolute tip of the edge featuring DJ's, Producers, and artists who are true creators and who's only goal is to keep the dancefloor live. The environment is an ever changing inspiration of visual artists who's installations fill the void of your mind with something new to deconstruct."The CSS/Sleigh Bells tour hit La Zona Rosa in Austin, TX on 4/23. The pictures in this post are from that show which featured an opening set by Bosco Delrey. More of them below...

DFA1979

"While it was kind of a running joke that the gnarled dance-punk band was one of the biggest reunions at this year's Coachella (Death From Above 2005 jokes abounded), the band reasserted what made them such a strange and compelling commodity in the first place.Death From Above 1979's performance on Sunday was the second time the reunited band graced a public stage since announcing their return. The first was a semi-surprise appearance at this year's SXSW at March that got much more attention than anyone even anticipated due to a bit of violence that made the late night news. In May the band does it again at Sasquach.Lacerating bass, Grainger's falsetto wails and a relentless rhythmic urgency both hearkened back to the mid-'00 dance punk craze, yet reminded the audience that their palpable violence set them apart from their more trend-minded peers.
"Romantic Rights" and "Blood on Our Hands" rode slithery, distortion-tangled bass lines over the kind of four-on-the-floor that bassist Jesse F. Keeler would explore more thoroughly in his disco aegis MSTRKRFT.The audience seemed simultaneously enthralled and a bit confused."
[LA Times]
Coachella 2011 concluded on Sunday with a big headlining set by Kanye West. I already posted some pictures from that one, but a more proper set is also in this post which also includes our full set of pictures from the California festival's final day (day one pics HERE, day two HERE).
Bon Iver's Justin Vernon who played Friday night with Gayngs, made two guest appearances on Sunday, first with the National earlier in the day and then with Kanye West during one of the most high profile sets of the weekend.
The other big set of Sunday was by the Strokes who weren't afraid to play the hits. Their full setlist is below.
The Strokes

PJ Harvey (who arrives in NYC this week) played her headlining set on the "Outdoor Theatre." It overlapped with both The Strokes and Kanye...
"Backed by a nimble three piece band, Harvey, with the Strokes audible from the nearby main stage during the silences between songs, delivered the most emotionally intense performance I witnessed at this year's Coachella, singing songs of violence, war, love and lust (mostly from her harrowing new Let England Shake), before a crowd of rabid supporters...." Princeton, who were just in town not long ago, will open the new Bowery date and the sold out MHOW date. Mr. Dream and Seagull open at Webster Hall.
CSS are currently working on a new LP (24 songs written) and according to a recent Brazilian article will release it in 2011.

Big names and regulars aside, there are a few bands I want to highlight on the just-announced Sasquatch lineup: Wolf Parade ("indefinite hiatus" rumors be damned), The Flaming Lips (performing "The Soft Bulletin"), Death From Above 1979 (now three reunion shows total), Guided By Voices (they're not done yet), and... Archers of Loaf (!). The full lineup of the fest that goes down in Gorge, Washington in May (Memorial Day Weekend), is below...

Sleigh Bells in Philly (more by Chris Gersbeck)

The first 300 kids lined up down the street got in. An aside: the only "Skins"-like moment of the night were the high schoolers behind me doing coke while their girlfriends peed on the sidewalk an hour and a half into the two hour freezing cold wait.Gawker's review comes from the that Skins party (referred to as the "World's Biggest Eight Grade Dance") which featured Sleigh Bells as the headliner. Most people who RSVPed did not get in (the RSVP list reportedly was in the five figures). Some ended up in Brooklyn instead of Manhattan. If you got in you'd find yourself awash in day-glo, smoke machines and a strange party that was equal parts rave and small town carnival. There was a rave themed moon-bounce and blacklight-face-paint... neat... Think "dance party themed" Bar Mitzvah with a real big budget.
The cast of the show was there too, they'd come down from an upper level, no drinks in hand, answering the pressing question of the night--whether or not the underage cast would be seen partying. Perhaps they left their drinks upstairs.
The entertainment was decent, including Klever, Drop The Lime, and Kill The Noise. The DJs played throughout the night, hunched over laptops, cranking out house and dubstep. A break in the rave came around 12 when Sleigh Bells came on-stage to play possibly the loudest set the human ear can handle. -[Gawker]
If you were left out in the cold (literally) at the Skins launch party, don't fret. After Sleigh Bells return from a stint in Europe at the tail end of February, the duo will hit the US with CSS for a string of tour dates in early May that will include dates at Webster Hall on May 11th and Music Hall of Williamsburg on May 12th. Tickets for both shows (Webster Hall, MHoW) go on AMEX presale on 1/26 at noon and regular sale 48 hours later. Neon Indian will open the dates that CSS won't, and Mr. Dream is on board for a string of dates including Webster Hall (with CSS).
A recent update to Diplo's Mad Decent blog revealed quite a bit about what Derek Miller of Sleigh Bells (ex-Poison The Well) and Diplo have been up to:
"Derek from sleigh bellz and me have matching florida tattoos and we both are from shitty parts of broward county // & their last album was one of the sickest of '10 .. its soo sick, its gave me a stomach ache .. half lyrnyrd skinnard half bangladesh half man half alligator.. . me and derek and alexis are bros and sis for life. in fact i like sleigh bells so much .. me and switch was in studio in nyc tryin to make tracks with derek and beyonce last week after we played her team their album .. dunno if we gonna manage to finish but was good times." - DiploA few things we learn from the above paragraph: First of all, Diplo needs a proofreader (like we can talk) and second, keep your fingers crossed because a Beyonce/Diplo/Switch/Derek Miller collabo track could surface (sounds interesting). While we wait, check out another Derek Miller/Diplo creation - a remix for Sleigh Bells's "Tell Em" (the actual reason for Diplo's blog post) which is downloadable above and streaming below, along side all tour dates.

"The entire show was colorful, entertaining and interactive. Balloons for the audience really warmed my heart. The band sounded amazing live, especially on Rat is Dead and Music is My Hot Hot Sex. The band really is a family, and a well oiled machine when it comes to performing. They are just as excited as the fans, who were a mix of NYC young folks, North and South American. Lots of their NYC friends were there as well. Post show, Lovefoxxx and the band greeted everyone, knocked back a beer or two in the balcony and called it a night." "A HALF-EMPTY venue and a middle-aged audience appeared to suggest that Primal Scream were not as relevant as they'd like to think they are.Primal Scream released their ninth studio album, Beautiful Future, on July 21, 2008. It was produced by "Bjƶrn Yttling (of Peter Bjorn and John) and Paul Epworth (who has produced Bloc Party)." The album features special guest appearances from Lovefoxxx (CSS), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Lykke Li (also a friend of Bjorn), Victoria Bergsman (The Concretes, "Young Folks"), Maria Andersson (Sahara Hotnights), Linda Thompson, and many others.Opening the night with the dirge, electro distortion of Kill All Hippies, the band rapidly ploughed through the hits. The set-list featured songs from throughout their vast back catalogue, including Jailbird, Swastika Eyes, Rocks and a smattering of material from recent album Beautiful Future.
Frontman Bobby Gillespie looked as youthful as ever, but didn't really have any real conviction despite his attempts to come over all rock and roll by turning his back on the audience for one track.
Musically, the Scream sounded tight as a band with new member Barrie Cadogan standing out on lead guitar and gelling well with ex-Stone Roses bassist Mani." [a November 25th UK review]
On March 28th, 2009, Primal Scream will play Webster Hall in NYC. Tickets go on sale Thursday. All dates below...

This weekly post was really just meant to be an (arguably) interesting news roundup of where (mostly BV-covered) music and musicians are showing up besides in our stereos/computers/headphones/players/etc. Like all news, it might be positive, negative or neither depending on your point of view. Whether or not an artist is "selling out" by licensing their song to a particular product advertisement and/or TV show is always going to be a valid issue/argument/debate, but I removed "It's Not Selling Out Anymore" from the post title because, lighthearted or not, I think it was making this post into something it's not. Most importantly, I didn't want the title to be misconstrued as an official BrooklynVegan position on anything. There will always be (arguably) cringe-worthy examples of licensing (see Of Montreal + Outback Steakhouse) and licensing-related broken (fan's) hearts (see The Moldy Peaches + Atlantis resorts), but a lot of licensing news (as you can see below), is (arguably) pretty neutral. Are there any Modest Mouse fans offended that a Modest Mouse song appears in a snowboarding video game? I doubt it. Does it bother anyone that Stars of the Lid gave a song to the Environmental Defense Fund? Probably only people that are anti-polar bear... That's all I wanted to say.... I won't write intros to these posts after this week (please try to keep the conspiracy theories to a minimum!), so without further ado... it's "This Week in Music Licensing"...

Battles @ Irving Plaza (more by Bao Nguyen)

42 Below likes to do things because they can, like make Vodka and wear white suits. The New Zealand spirit maker just launched a campaign and website around the brand's mantra, "Because We Can" - living by your own rules and following your dreams. Pretty deep. The web-based campaign consists of five short films and a user-generated video contest.
Each of the five short films have a few things in common - men in all white suits, left-of-center creative, art installations, cool music, and no relation whatsoever to Vodka. Carpet Cupcake uses Battles' 2007 jam "Atlas". Two different Boards Of Canada songs are used in Beach Dolls and Car Wrap. Domino artist Four Tet provides the sonic background to Mountain Rainbow, a spot where the white suit men create a huge arch of colored plastic chairs on top of a snowy mountain. South African electronic artist Felix Laband is used in Crate UFO.
Do you have a "because I can attitude"? Do you also like to make your own videos? Do you want to win some money for doing those things ($4200)? If so, you can head to the campaign's website to find out more about the contest.
Other Notable Licensing News:
Tokyo Police Club think it is "really cool and really awesome" that they made a cameo on Sunday night's (11/16) episode of Desperate Housewives. They entered a "battle of the bands" contest, performed "In A Cave", and had two of their song titles ("Shoulders And Arms" and "Cut Cut Paste") featured on the club walls as faux band posters. Even more, two band members have lines in the dialogue. Stereogum has the video. In semi-related news, TPC's Graham Wright just released a solo EP online as a free and/or pay download.
On the tube, Gossip Girl featured three tracks from the new Kings Of Leon album, Only By The Night; One Tree Hill for the second week in a row used a song by Margot & the Nuclear So-So's and also had a song by Earlimart; 90210 went with Kanye West, and Stereolab; CSI Miami used both Jenny Lewis and Bloc Party; NUMB3RS had Cold War Kids; Privileged used CSS; Grey's Anatomy had The Coral Sea. All this week Letterman is featuring cover bands.
Nissan'snew Canadian commercial "Morning Light" goes singer-songwriter with Alexi Murdoch's "Breathe". Nice song but I think they could have found a similar style track with a better lyrical match. Watch the video here.
Toshiba's UK agency breaks the broadcast mold a bit with a commercial featuring Matrix-esque cinematography while using the Crystal Castles song "Air War". Watch the video below.
Stars Of The Lid hit NYC's (le) Poisson Rouge on Friday 11/21; I wonder if they will play the serenely spatial "A Meaningful Moment Through A Meaningless Process", a song used by the Environmental Defense Fund to help fight global warming. The web commercial was released at the end of August. The powerful Polar Bear spot can be seen below.
What do 2008 Mercury Prize winning band Elbow and Electronic Arts have to do with each other? Elbow's song "Grounds For Divorce" is the soundtrack to the commercial announcing EA's new first person shooter, Left 4 Dead; the game hits shelves this upcoming week. Video is below.
Ubisoft Montreal just released Shaun White Snowboarding in North America. The game's soundtrack is a good mix of classic (Bob Dylan, Heart, Blue Ćyster Cult, Living Colour, Run DMC, Harry Nilsson) and modern (Modest Mouse, MGMT, The Ting Tings, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) bands. Check out the full soundtrack at Wikipedia. Bob Dylan plays NYC this Friday night (11/21).
Interesting downloadable content (DLC) was made available this week via Xbox Live and Playstation Network for both Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 2: GH got both a Jimi Hendrix and Smashing Pumpkins three song pack and RB2 fans can now play the entire Foo Fighters album The Colour and the Shape.

The 'Donkey' minimix MP3 (releaesd by CSS to promote the new album) is kind of lame because instead of actually mixing together every song on their new album 'Donkey', it just kind of plays clips of each song one after another. The other two CSS tracks are remixes by cool dudes from Australia, and the last one is a remix CSS did for a band called Sunny Day Set Fire (for an EP that also features remixes by The Cool Kids and "Mad Decent") which is kind of confusing because there's already a four word band name that starts with Sunny Day. CSS recently played the All Points West Festival and the rest of those pics (and tour dates) are below...
