Black Keys @ Barclays Center - 9/23/14
Crazy popular blues rock duo The Black Keys brought their ongoing tour with Cage the Elephant in support of this year's Turn Blue to Barclays Center last night (9/23) for the first of two shows this week at the huge Brooklyn venue. In addition to supporting the new record, their 21-song set was really pretty well-rounded between their last three including a handful of fan faves like "Lonely Boy," "Next Girl," "Tighten Up," "Gold on the Ceiling" and plenty more. They reached back to their earlier years a few times as well, and included a cover of Edwyn Collins' "A Girl Like You."
They do it again tonight (9/24) and tickets are still available. More pictures of the first night, and the Black Keys' setlist, below...

With the release of their new album, Turn Blue, The Black Keys will be spending the rest of 2014 on tour, including a stop at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on September 24. That show is not sold out, but a second Barclays date has been added, happening the day before (9/23) with Cage the Elephant opening both shows. Tickets for the new Barclays Center date go on sale Friday (6/6) at noon, with Facebook/Live Nation/Venue presales starting Thursday (6/5) at 10 AM

Outkast / Foals / Chance the Rapper / crowd
Playing essentially the same set they've begun taking across America, the version with "Hey Ya!" in the middle instead of left for desert, there were no hints of the awkwardness some saw in the hip-hop duo's Coachella performance in April: just urgency. While both men are no doubt happy to collect their headlining cheddar, on Saturday night, their performance was about legacy. They appeared within a cube with black-and-white projections of the American flag, evoking their "Stankonia" cover art, and their banter guided the crowd between songs as the set pivoted from hits to deep cuts, remembering the days they rehearsed rap verses around the kitchen table and crowing over OutKast's eternal coolness before "So Fresh, So Clean." [The Oregonian]Washington state music festival Sasquatch went down this past weekend (its only weekend) for three days packed with loads of bands. We just posted pictures of Yelle from day 1 (5/23), and we've got way more pictures from the first day in this post, including shots of Outkast, Die Antwoord, Rudimental, Mogwai, Damien Jurado, Phantogram, Foals, Phosphorescent, Chance the Rapper, De La Soul, Eugene Mirman, Rhett Miller (of the Old 97's) and so many more.

The Black Keys at Roseland Ballroom in January (more by Chad Kamenshine)
The Black Keys, who have a new album Turn Blue (due out 5/13 via Nonesuch) and an SNL appearance on the way, just announced a massive tour, which has them at arenas across the US and Canada from September through December. Many of the dates are with St. Vincent, but unfortunately not the NYC date happening on September 24 at Barclays Center, which is with Cage the Elephant.
Tickets for that show go on sale Friday, May 16 at 10 AM with a Citi presale starting Tuesday (5/13) at 10 AM, a Facebook presale starting Wednesday (5/14) at 10 AM, and a Live Nation presale starting Thursday (5/15) at 10 AM.

Bonnaroo 2013 (more by Katherine Hansen)
As mentioned, Bonnaroo 2014 happens June 12 - 15 in Manchester, TN. The fest has already been dropping hints as to who's going to play this year (Kanye and Elton John seem likely as headliners) but will finally spill the beans tonight via a web show called "Blam!" which airs at 9 PM EST on Bonnaroo.com (or an Xbox app). (Maybe you watched last year's with Weird Al Yankovich and Portugal the Man.) This year's announcement special is hosted by SNL's Taran Killam and Broad City's Hannibal Buress, with a "superjam" between The Flaming Lips and Ben Folds.
There's also a pre-Blam! web event from 7 - 9 PM EST featuring live cover song performances from Tenacious D, Kings Of Leon, Phish, My Morning Jacket, and others.

As mentioned, Foals are touring this spring with Cage the Elephant and will be in NYC for a show at Terminal 5 on May 6. While there are still tickets left for that show, they've added a second show the next night (5/7). Governors Ball and Hangout Fest lineups were just announced today (and Firefly yesterday and Coachella not long before that), and now comes the lineup announcement for another big fest, Atlanta's Shaky Knees Festival. The fest goes down from May 9-11 at Atlantic Station with The National, Modest Mouse, Spoon, Local Natives, The Gaslight Anthem, Violent Femmes, Conor Oberst, Iron and Wine, Jenny Lewis, Dawes, Foals, Deer Tick, The Hold Steady, Tokyo Police Club, Graveyard, Mutual Benefit and many more. As discussed, Dover, Delaware's annual Firefly Music Festival is returning this year and has expanded to a four-day festival happening from June 19-22. Since we last spoke, the lineup has been announced and it includes Outkast, Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, Weezer, Band of Horses, Chance the Rapper, Courtney Barnett, Iron & Wine, Phantogram, Phosphorescent, Sky Ferreira, Sleigh Bells, Tegan and Sara, tUnE-yArDs, Washed Out, not to mention everyone's favorite festival act Jack Jackson as one of the headliners. LA radio station KROQ is doing its annual Almost Acoustic Christmas from December 7-8 at LA's Shrine Auditorium. The lineup for day 1 was just announced, and it includes Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Foals and more. Tickets for day 1 go on sale Friday (11/8) at noon. Full day 1 lineup below.
In related news, Arctic Monkeys, Foals and Vampire Weekend were all among the winners at the 2013 Q Awards. Arctic Monkeys won 'Best Track' for "Do I Wanna Know?" and Foals and Vampire Weekend won for 'Best Live Act' and 'Best Act In The World Today,' respectively.
There was some drama at the ceremony though, as it certainly sounded like Foals took a stab at Arctic Monkeys (via NME). Upon receiving their award, Foals' Yannis Phillippakis said, ""It shows you don't need a backing track, you don't need affectation, you don't need Elvis Presley impersonations." As NME points out, it seems pretty obvious that he was talking about Alex Turner with the Elvis impersonations bit.
Meanwhile, Vampire Weekend just had to cancel some European dates.

Metallica / Fucked Up at Orion Music Fest, June 23, 2012
Metallica's Orion Music & More festival went down in Atlantic CIty's Bader Field this weekend, featuring the band performing Ride the Lightning in full on Saturday (6/23) and The Black Album on Sunday (6/24), in addition to many other bands across four stages. Bader Field, which was previously used as an airport, was filled with rockers of all kinds -- from the satanist metalheads to the Gaslight Anthem-shirt bearing rock and rollers. In addition to the bands, you could check out Lars Ulrich's curated film screenings, James Hetfield's classic cars, Kirk Hammett's horror memorabilia, rock memorabilia with everything from old Velvet Underground postcards to Melvins posters, and much much more. And all of this went down just across the water from the towering, lit-up excess of Atlantic City's Trump Plaza, Caesars Palace, and the like.
I showed up to the festival on Saturday about halfway through Baroness' opening set on the main Orion Stage. Though the crowd was still pretty thin (they went on at 1 PM), the band delivered a strong set filled with a great mix of hooks and sludge, winning over most of the people who had showed up early enough to catch them.
Next stop for me was Lucero, also on the Orion Stage. "This song's called 'Women and Work,' it's about whiskey," said singer Ben Nichols of the title track off their most recent LP, making what was only one of many whiskey references during their set. They had a solid mix of the upbeat ones like that, and their sprawling slow-burners. The band sounded best on those slower cuts, as they drifted across the hot, sunny, mid-afternoon Bader Field, though I'm sure the foot-stompers would have taken charge in a smaller, tightly packed venue like their drunken NYE show at Brooklyn Bowl. The band did crank up the distortion on "Sounds of the City," and got great crowd reaction during "All Sewn Up," which he dedicated to the audience: "Plenty of fucking bad tattoos out there, so this one's for all y'all."
After Lucero's set ended, the Fuel stage saw what might have been the wildest set of the day with Fucked Up. Frontman Damian Abraham began by saying, "Last year we were thinking... who would be the craziest band we could play with, and we were like... METALLICA!" before kicking into "Queen of Hearts" off 2011's epic David Comes to Life. As per ushe, it only took about three seconds into that song for Damian to barge into the crowd (where he spent most of the show) and another few minutes before he took his shirt off. They relied most heavily on material off of David, playing other highlights like "The Other Shoe," "Turn the Season," and more. In the past I've said that Damian's in-the-crowd antics tend to be less successful in larger venues, but at Orion fest he did everything in his power to make his way through the entire crowd. He must have been part of every single mosh pit that broke out, and traveled everywhere from the kids pushing against the barrier to the people standing in the very back.
The Gaslight Anthem followed, taking to the Orion Stage, and came out with an introduction from Lars (as many other bands that day did). After his introduction, the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" began playing through the PA as the band walked out, with frontman Brian Fallon decked out in an "RIP MCA" shirt (written in Run DMC typeset). I didn't notice it during Baroness or Lucero (and maybe Fucked Up's loud mayhem was to blame), but the sound at Orion Stage was significantly lower for all the non-Metallica bands that played, and it became easy to feel removed during The Gaslight Anthem's set. Despite the conditions, the band still sounded on point. They played "45," the single off their upcoming album, which is easily their best song since The '59 Sound, and older favorites as well, like "Old White Lincoln," "The Patient Ferris Wheel," and of course, "The '59 Sound."

I then made my way over to the Frantic tent -- undoubtedly the best stage to watch bands -- for Hot Snakes, who were also introduced by Lars. Lars acknowledged the stage as well ("this is becoming my favorite stage of the day... this is where all the cool kids hang out!") and said tons of flattering things about Hot Snakes. The band thanked him a couple times for his compliments, before asking the crowd if any of us had heard of them, to which they were greeted with massive cheers that they seemed pretty surprised about. After all the intro-ing, the band began playing the buzzsaw guitar riff of "I Hate the Kids," the opening track off 2002's classic Suicide Invoice. They reunited last year after breaking in 2005, and they've definitely still got it. They played a good amount of Suicide Invoice, including "LAX," "Who Died," "Gar Forgets His Insulin," and the punishing title track.
After Hot Snakes' set, Modest Mouse took over the Orion Stage, and like with The Gaslight Anthem, the sound and setting of this stage did them absolutely no justice. We got some great songs -- "Bury Me With It," "Dramamine," "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes" -- but they were mostly drowned out by the talking of the uninterested crowd, many of who had begun gathering for Metallica. Not surprisingly, "Float On" was the one song that stopped the crowd from talking and got 'em singing along. Things probably went over better for Modest Mouse at the more indie-centric Governors Ball, which they played on Sunday.
Suicidal Tendencies meanwhile were playing to a giant crowd on the smaller metal-centric Damage Inc. stage, with help from their ex-bandmate, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo who joined them for a bunch of songs.

Hands down, my highlight of the pre-Metallica portion of the festival was Arctic Monkeys, who played the Fuel stage directly before the headliners took over Orion. It goes without saying that Lars took the time to introduce this band (their first record is his favorite of the '00s) and he said tons of appreciative things about the band, including that he's seen them every time they've played his city. They opened their set with the attack of "Brianstorm," which sent the band into a frenzy that didn't let up once during the set. Though the band's latter two records have been a bit less popular than their first two, they've really shown a maturation in sound on them and especially on a festival with a mass of heavier bands a lot of their newer material fit right in. Songs like "Pretty Visitors" and "Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair" border on sludge metal and stood out just as much, if not more than older classics like "Teddy Picker," "Fluorescent Adolescent," and "Dancefloor." In keeping spirits with the festival, during "Don't Sit Down," Alex Turner changed the line, "bite the lightning," to "Ride the Lightning," and pointed across the field at the Orion stage where Metallica's stage hands were gearing up for the band to play said album in full.
Alex takes complete control of the crowd and throws in a bit of playful arrogance, like pointing to Matt Helders and saying, "check this shit out," before one of Matt's more technical drum parts. The band pretty much kept their whole set in full throttle mode, eschewing many of their lighter songs, and they delivered with colossal power. Over ruthless drumming, stoner rock guitar solos, and overall ceaseless energy, Alex effortlessly topped it all off with his soaring vocals, almost of all of which were met by singalongs from the crowd.
Finally, after the rest of the festival had wrapped up, the strings of Ennio Morricone's "The Ecstasy of Gold" from Metallica's S&M album began playing through the PA, which meant the band -- who for many, were the sole reason of coming to the festival -- were about to take the stage. They opened with a bunch of live staples, like "Hit the Lights," "Master of Puppets," "Sad But True," and "The Four Horsemen," plus a newer one as well. Then the lights went black and on the stage's screens, popped up a video of clips from Metallica's Ride the Lightning period, which was greeted by huge cheers of the thousands of people that knew the band's performance of the album was on the way. When soundclips of Cliff Burton surfaced on the video, even more applause came, honoring the band's bassist who performed with them on their first three albums before passing away in a tour bus accident in 1986. After the video ended, an animated play on the Lightning album artwork took over the screens and the album's final track, "Call of Ktulu" began playing (they performed the album in reverse). Once "Ktulu" picked up, the lights came back on, revealing the band members on stage playing the song, and yielding more and more applause.
After the instrumental track, live favorite "Creeping Death" came in, sending the band pummeling into a spiraling vector of thrash. The band's theatrics, rock star approach, and tendency to play hits-heavy sets can give off the feeling that they've reached the point where their shows are simply crowd-pleasers, but it's really not the case. The band whole heartedly rock the fuck out on stage, and despite everything else going on, simply watching them play is pretty mind blowing.
According to Lightning's reverse tracklist, after "Creeping Death," came "Escape," which the band have never performed live, mainly because James absolutely hates the track. For anyone who didn't know, he made it abundantly clear at the show and even looked like he was having a bit of trouble getting into it while they played it live for their first time ever, but by the end, the crowd had welcomed its live debut more than excellently. Though James wouldn't hear of it -- "NO!" he yelled when the crowd tried convincing him that they loved it.
Then came "Trapped Under Ice," followed by "Fade to Black," which was by far the loudest singalong on the album during the acoustic guitar-led verses and, as occurs at Metallica concerts, the melody to Kirk's guitar solo in the intro. After the song's headbanging second half, James, with a smug smile, responded to the fanatic cheers with, "Yeah, I like that one too." The level of noise stayed above 10 for the following song, "For Whom the Bell Tolls," whose chorus saw tons of \m/-raised arms attached to bodies screaming along. Following the album's title track, Metallica wrapped up their performance of the album with much anticipated opening thrasher, "Fight Fire With Fire," for which the screens behind the band showed the masses of audience members singing along to the song's choppy vocals.
Directly after the performance of the album ended, the band stayed on stage and went immediately into more live staples -- "Nothing Else Matters" and "Enter Sandman." They then left the stage before returning for an encore which began in the dark with the acoustic intro of "Battery," and then hitting the lights for the song's slaying mile-a-minute riffing. The encore wrapped up with loud fireworks, black Metallica beach balls thrown int the crowd and two more live staples, "One" and "Seek & Destroy" and after the members of the band continued to thank the crowd for coming and making their festival a success.

Orion Music & More is the first NYC-area appearance for Hot Snakes since the reunited band played The Bell House and Maxwell's in December. They'll play another area show (also in NJ) at ATP I'll Be Your Mirror in September.
As mentioned, it's the first time in a while that Modest Mouse will be in the NYC area. They play Orion on Saturday (6/23) before heading to Randall's Island for Governors Ball, which also happens this weekend.

If you're heading out to Atlantic City for the fest this weekend, head here for directions. If you're driving, there's no on-site parking at the field, but there are a number of parking areas nearby and free shuttles that run from the lots to Bader Field. If you're taking the train, you can get there via the Amtrak or the NJ Transit Rail and there will be a free shuttle from the Atlantic City terminal to the festival. Once you're there, this map should help you get around. We're also told that it's about a 20-30 minute walk from the boardwalk.

In related news," Kirk's Crypt" isn't the only place Mr. Hammett will be indulging in his love of all things creepy. He'll be publishing a book titled Too Much Horror Business - The Kirk Hammett Collection this October via Abrams Image with photographs of his personal collection of horror memorabilia. The book also includes Kirk's own handwritten captions for many of the photographs. He'll be putting out limited edition toys, like the ones he's been collecting his whole life, along with the book this October. You can pre-order the book at Kirk's online toy store. He'll be discussing the book at Kirk's Crypt at 4 PM each day.

As posted last night, Modest Mouse are playing Governors Ball on Randall's Island during the weekend of June 23-24 (same weekend as Orion), but they are just one of many artists that are now announced, and listed, along with more information, below...
The rumored two-day NJ Metallica festival is true, and it's happening on June 23 & 24, 2012 in Atlantic City, NJ. 22+ artists (music and comedy) will play with Metallica headlining both nights with special setlists. Metallica will play the Black Album in its entirety on one of the nights "for the first time ever on US soil", and... Ride The Lighting on the other night! The venue is Bader Field (an abandoned airport).

Lollapalooza celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with some huge names on its just-announced lineup. See it in full below.
The festival has obviously changed over the years. What started out as a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction with a 'touring festival' lineup that included the Rollins Band, Nine Inch Nails, Butthole Surfers, and Souxsie & The Banshees, has turned into a one-weekend Chicago festival that Lady Gaga co-headlined last year. As leaked a while ago, Foo Fighters, Muse and Eminem all play this year, as will Coldplay, Cee Lo Green, and My Morning Jacket along with the reunited Cars and the continuing-to-be-reunited Big Audio Dynamite and Death From Above 1979, and a bunch of other bands which may or may not be worth the ticket price depending on how you feel about the headliners and generally seeing bands in big, hot, outdoor crowded parks (Lollapalooza happens in Chicago's Grant Park from August 5th - 7th).

The Gulf Restoration Network celebrates four years as the official non-profit partner of the Voodoo Experience, one of New Orleans best music festivals. We constructed demonstration barrier islands, marshes and cypress swamps to educate music worshippers about the importance of our natural storm defenses, the threat of the BP drilling disaster, and the need for a national commitment to the recovery and restoration of the Gulf. We also held a press conference with featured musicians speaking out for the Gulf, and welcomed the Acting Outlaws to NOLA. The Acting Outlaws are Tricia Helfer and Katee Sackhoff, actresses who share a line on their resumes (lead roles in Battlestar Galactica), a love of motorcycles, and a belief that everyone can do something to make the world better. During his Friday night set at the All Points West festival in Jersey City, Jay-Z took a moment to salute trail-blazing gangsta-rapper Ice-T, who, Jay-Z said, was "in the house." And Saturday afternoon, Ice-T took the stage to perform as a backing rapper during Kool Keith's second-stage performance.Though it didn't rain on Saturday (8/1), it was still super muddy. There were dry spots, but you literally could not walk from one place to another without going through some mud. Other highlights of the second day of All Points West included comedy by Tim & Eric in the tent (aka the third stage), back-to-back sets by St. Vincent and Neko Case on the 2nd stage, and the Arctic Monkeys and Gogol Bordello on the main stage. But nothing topped the end of the day. Now fully dark out and perfect weather, My Bloody Valentine, with the Statue of Liberty to their right and the Manhattan skyline straight ahead of them, delivered the power. The hour they played was, for me, the perfect festival experience.
"Sometimes it's just cool to stand on the side of the stage and be a hype man," said Ice-T.
He did, though, perform parts of his own raps, "Hardcore" and "God Forgive Me," a cappella.
With his confident, casually commanding flow, he made a strong impression in his few brief moments in the spotlight.
In addition to Jay-Z and Kool Keith, hip-hop acts like Q-Tip, the Knux and the Cool Kids have performed at All Points West. Hip-hop, though, will not figure prominently in the third and final day of the festival, Sunday. [NJ.com]
My Bloody Valentine
It helped that My Bloody Valentine, as they are known for being, were LOUD. Maybe they didn't seem as loud as they did inside a club, but they were loud enough that even those in the bleachers were putting on their earplugs if they had them. After their set I ran all the way back to the dance tent (pretty much the farthest distance you would have to ever go at this festival) to catch Crystal Castles. The tent was packed with the largest concentration of youth I'd seen in Liberty State Park up until that point. Everyone was dancing and cheering. Before CC were finished I ran back to the main stage to watch Tool.
During My Bloody Valentine I thought, "well, there are plenty of people here, but I guess they could fit a lot more". Ends up, all of those people that could fit, they showed up for Tool! Did they all just get there? Were they hiding in other areas? Either way, it totally hit me by surprise when I got back to the stage. I was also surprised, but happy, that Tool hadn't gone on yet. They don't play a super long set, so maybe they delayed to make the show go until curfew.
Once they did start, the amount of fist pumping (much bro fist pumping included) going on almost matched the amount of people in the park. I wouldn't consider myself a Tool fan, but there was no denying the awesomeness of their show.
"On a bill loaded with indie rock, Tool seemed initially distinguished by their popularity. They were the only band on Saturday's bill to have a platinum record, and the only performers to have won Grammys, and the only ones with enough starpower to sell out arenas on their own. And yet despite their high profile, Tool hardly behave like a mainstream band. Saturday's set was an exercise in atmosphere -- a dark, riveting performance that minimized the members of band while foregrounding their stranger sensibilities.I took the light rail to the park, but then the ferry home. Props to APW for making the ferry experience a much, much better one this year (no line at all, huge boats, very quick trip home, and I didn't even leave until Tool was finished).
Visually, the show was stunning. Tool perform to a series of bleak films mostly created by the artist Adam Jones, and beamed out giant-size across Liberty State Park they seemed more imposing and unnerving than ever. Opening with the sinister, twisting "Jambi," the group slowly worked its way through a set that spanned its small catalog. Part of what makes Tool concerts such visceral experiences is the band's peerless sense of control and release. Songs start with icicle drip guitars and rolling, tribal percussion, steadily building to perfectly timed explosions of sound. When paired with Jones' frightening films, it became more like a theater experience than a concert. At times it was remarkably easy to forget there was a band onstage at all." [Rolling Stone]

This year Coachella, which has the most glamorous reputation of all American festivals, began selling tickets on layaway, and 18 percent of its customers took that option, Mr. Tollett said.With all the leaks of bands playing Lollapalooza this year, there are almost no surprises in the official lineup announcement, except maybe the Animal Collective DJ set... The proliferation of big festivals, like Bonnaroo near Nashville and Lollapalooza in Chicago, has not been without casualties. This year Langerado in Miami shut down, citing the economy. The Pemberton Festival in British Columbia is on hiatus after only one year, although its promoter, Live Nation, said the problem was permit delays." [NY Times]
Following last year's inaugural event, festival producers began work immediately on resolving concerns expressed by fans in attendance. They have worked closely with their partners at NJ Transit to improve light-rail service and capacity. As an added value for 2009, festival goers who choose to travel to the site utilizing the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line can ride for free throughout the weekend with their ALL POINTS WEST festival ticket. Additionally, based on the popularity of the ferry as a mode of transportation from lower Manhattan to Liberty State Park, the frequency and size of the ferryboats will increase at a reduced price for festival attendees.... The producers have also worked with their partners at Liberty State Park to improve the fan experience in the beer gardens. This year's areas will be larger, have shorter lines, and feature shade tents, views of the stages and food concessions...The second annual ALL POINTS WEST MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL returns to Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey Friday, July 31, Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2. Like last year, bands will play on three stages, except "the Queen of the Valley stage has been changed to a Coachella-like tent creating an environment that will showcase comedy, DJs, electronic acts and bands."
