Kanye West at Governors ball 2013 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Kanye

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows. Here are some highlights...

Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar @ Barclays Center
Kanye's got two of the biggest, if not the biggest, rap albums of the current decade under his belt, and an elaborate stage show to deliver the material live. Plus he's got one of the best current younger rappers opening tonight's show.

Cut Copy @ Le Poisson Rouge
Australian synth pop band Cut Copy returned with their new album Free Your Mind this year, and tonight they play their first NYC show since its release. It's a free, intimate, NPR/KCRW taping, and though it's "sold" out, if you didn't get tickets you can stream it online.

Metric @ Bowery Ballroom
Speaking of bigger bands in intimate venues, Metric, who just opened for Paramore at MSG and last headlined Radio City Music Hall in NYC, returns for this small show at Bowery Ballroom tonight. Sold out of course.

Mavis Staples @ City Winery
Soul legend Mavis Staples (of The Staple Singers) is still very active, touring consistently and continuing to release new music (including this year's Jeff Tweedy of Wilco-produced One True Vine). Tonight she returns to NYC for her second time this year for a three-night run at City Winery.

Been Trill, L-Vis 1990, Total Freedom, Purity Ring (DJ Set), MXM / Sang Bleu London @ Output
This whole bill should keep you dancing all night, but it will be especially exciting to see what Purity Ring's got in store. Their DJ set at CMJ featured some guest appearances and we heard it got pretty crazy.

Lena Dunham, David Sedaris @ Carnegie Hall
Before author and humorist David Sedaris takes over Carnegie Hall by himself, he'll hook up tonight with Girls creator and star Lena Dunham for "an insightful evening of reading and conversation" on the same stage.

Trademark Da Skydiver, Young Roddy, Ken Rebel, DJ Two Three, Dice The God, Cannibal Ox @ Marlin Room at Webster Hall
Underground hip hop vets Cannibal Ox have been playing shows again lately, and though they don't headline this one, it's another chance to see the duo back in action.

Dan Deacon (DJ), Paz @ Cedar Lake
To quote Dan, he's "DJing a free weird event tomorrow during a video game tournament." You do need to RSVP.

Jack White, Dean and Scott Blackwood, Daphne A. Brooks, and Greil Marcus @ New York Public Library
This is a discussion about Third Man Records new, massive The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records 1917-1932 box set. Sold out.

Tree, Illmind @ Glasslands
Tree's been doing pretty well in his local Chicago hip hop scene, and tonight we'll get a chance to see him do it in NYC.

Midnight Eye, Blackout, Surgeon, Throaat @ Acheron
Epic shred commence: DC's Midnight Eye team up with BK's own Blackout (who have the best band pic ever) and Philly's Surgeon for a night of trad-leaning, capital-letters Heavy Metal. Extra local support from local black/thrashers Throaat.

Cannibal Ox

Harlem underground hip hop duo Cannibal Ox made their live return this year at Knitting Factory Brooklyn after a long hiatus, and once again promised they'd finally release a followup to their 2001 debut, which has been delayed multiple times. Now, Can Ox member Vast Aire has taken it one step further and launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for their new record and Iron Galaxy Clik Records, the label that the duo plan to launch and release the new album on. The Kickstarter page reads:

Cannibal Ox is launching their own label Iron Galaxy Clik (IGC) Records and have reunited for their long awaited sophomore album. Cannibal Ox has already completed their first leg of their tour and funding will help us with videos, more US and International touring, the label, our spring 2013 single entitled "GOTHAM {OX CITY}" and most importantly the completion of the album. Instead of complaining about the quality of hip hop, make a change and support a real movement. 100% of your pledges will go to the funding of the sophomore album of Cannibal Ox, new videos, touring support, marketing and promotion, street teams (physical and digital), and production budget for other featured artists on the album. This label and album is 10 years in the making and needs the fans support to bring it to life.
In November, the duo said they were working with producers Bill Cosmiq and Melodious Monk on the album, rather than El-P, who produced their debut and said in 2011 that he'd never produce another Can Ox album. But that was then, and now we're living in a post-apocalyptic time where even new My Bloody Valentine albums get released, so fingers crossed that El-P and Cannibal Ox can work things out.

Head over to Kickstarter to help Cannibal Ox reach their goal, and check out the campaign video below...

Cannibal Ox

Earlier this week, we mentioned that legendary underground hip hop duo Cannibal Ox are back after a long period of silence and will play a Brooklyn show on December 9 at Knitting Factory. Tickets for that show are still available.

Pigeons & Planes is now reporting that the duo are planning a follow-up to their lone studio album, 2001's The Cold Vein, for a 2013 release. It's not the first time the duo have announced the release of a second album, after having planned one in 2006, that allegedly included production from Pete Rock and RZA. El-P, who produced The Cold Vein said in a facebook post in 2011, "there wont ever be a can ox album produced by me again and thats a fact." Assuming this album actually comes out, here's to hoping El-P goes back on his word.

According to Can Ox member Vast Aire, "We never broke up, but the timing is now right for a new Cannibal Ox LP." He also tweeted that more shows, including some on the west coast, are being scheduled.

Cannibal Ox
Cannibal Ox

It's been a while since we've heard from Cannibal Ox, the Harlem underground hip hop duo whose only studio album to date is 2001's incredible The Cold Vein (produced entirely by El-P and released on his Def Jux label). One half of the group, Vast Aire, has been releasing solo material and continuing to play live in NYC, but the duo will again join forces for a show at Knitting Factory Brooklyn on December 9. Support at that show comes from C-Rayz Walz, Prop Anon, Double AB, Creature, Ireelz, J.Stylez, and Original Text. Tickets for the show are on sale now.

No word on whether or not the duo plans to record new material, but with the revived interest in Def Jux-style hip hop that's been going on this year with lots of deserved attention being paid to new albums by Aesop Rock, Killer Mike and El-P, it'd be a great time for a solid comeback.

The video for "Painkillers" from The Cold Vein is below.

Vast Aire
Vast Aire

Vast Aire aka one half of NYC abstract hip hop duo Cannibal Ox, who are responsible for 2001's incredible El-P produced The Cold Vein, recently announced that he'll play a hometown show in NYC on July 12 at The Studio at Webster Hall with OutofaWhole and Kev Bars. Tickets for the show are on sale now. It's his only announced date at the moment but his facebook page makes it sound like more may be on the way.

Vast's most recent album was the OX 2010: A Street Odyssey LP, which came out last year, featuring contributions from Raekwon, Guilty Simpson, and more. Check out the video for "The Cannon of Samus" from that release below.

Speaking of El-P, he's been having an excellent year thanks to his production on Killer Mike's great new album, R.A.P. Music and his own also great Cancer 4 Cure LP. Unfortunately, he was forced to cancel some European festival appearances this week due to the unexpected passing of someone close to him, but as promised, the rest of his tour with Killer Mike, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, and Despot will proceed as planned. That tour includes the previously discussed NYC show on July 13 at Irving Plaza. Tickets for that show are still available.
