Screaming Females at BV Day Party during SXSW (more by Tim Griffin)
Screaming Females

Against Me!, Screaming Females & Lemuria are going on tour this summer, and that tour just got a little bit bigger. The three bands will play Music Hall of Williamsburg on June 5th, two days before they hit Webster Hall. Tickets are still available for the Webster show, and tickets for the new Brooklyn show go on AmEx presale today at noon, and general sale on Friday at noon.

Screaming Females recently tried play a show in New Brunswick, but they wrote...

So we didn't get to play the New Brunswick, NJ show the other night because the cops showed up. Luckily all the amazing touring bands did have a chance to play and see how rad the NJ DIY community can be. Screaming Females haven't played a proper New Brunswick show since 5/12/2010. It breaks my heart! Check out the bands if you haven't.
Broken Water (Olympia, WA)
Songs for Moms (Oakland, CA)
Grass Widow (San Francisco, CA)
Luckily for those still wanting to see the band in NJ and not with Against Me!, Screaming Females are also playing Kearny Irish Club on May 6 and Stanhope House on May 19 (the names of the NJ towns are both in the name of the venues).

In other news, Screaming Females palyed Carson Daly again (their 2nd or 3rd time) on Thursday night (video below), and you can hear them on WFMU soon:

We recorded a set at the world famous NJ based radio station WFMU yesterday. It will air on the show "Beastin' The Airwaves! with Keili " on Sunday May 15 at 6am eastern USA time. Early!!! You can also listen to the set at the archives after it airs. We debuted a new song during the session. I think it is a hit!

"Matt & Kim shuttin it down!! @ Webster Hall" - Bryan Lam

"Matt and Kim concert. It's time to get crazy in NYC!" - Erik Segura

Matt & Kim

Despite their constant movement into the audience, onto their equipment and up the scaffolding that held up their light setup, Matt & Kim placed their instruments as close together as the 9:30 Club stage would allow. Their hyperactivity made Sleigh Bells look like slackers and the onstage chemistry was oh-so-cute -- except when it wasn't.

After a short time, it became clear that although Matt & Kim have released two albums and have material ready for a third, all of their songs are pretty much variations on their big hits, "Yea Yeah" and "It's a Fact." All have loud and fast drumbeats, loud and fast keyboards and loud and fast keyboards -- usually with the same chord progressions. But in case anyone got sick of hearing the same "BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM" over and over again, Matt & Kim broke up their own set with samples from stadium staples like Biz Markie's "Just a Friend" and DJ Kool's "Let Me Clear My Throat." Adding the jock jams seemed appropriate given that Matt Johnson kept breathing heavily between songs, as if constantly between sprints. The band's bright light setup also added to the illusion that we were really at some overstimulating pep rally. -[DCist]

The above quote comes from Matt & Kim's DC show which took place on 10/22 at 9:30 Club, a few days before the band began its two day reign at the 1400+ capacity Webster Hall (where will they headline next? Terminal 5?) with The So So Glos and Donnis (10/26 and 10/27). The pictures in this post are from the 2nd show, where, as usual, the kids ate it up, and just generally went nuts. Not news, but Matt & Kim's days of ruling the DIY Todd P scene are a thing of the past. Their choice of The So So Glos, who helped found the now-closed Market Hotel, as opener was one reminder though, of their pre-VMA/mega-sponsored life.

Matt & Kim's spunky NYC run is over (they're in Rochester tonight) (all dates below), but The So So Glos have another date in town tonight (10/28): they play a free show at Matchless with Titus Andronicus.

Matt & Kim's new album Sidewalks is out 11/2 (iTunes). "Matt and Kim fans around the country have been busy creating art on these postcards, distributed at festivals over the Summer, and sending them into m and k headquarters." Those postcards were compiled into a promotional video which you can watch under the rest of the pictures and videos from Webster Hall, and other stuff, below...

OFF! at Fader Fort (by Jason House)
Off!

OFF! completed their NYC invasion with a three-day stint of reportedly raucous shows at a packed out Europa on 10/21, Generation Records on 10/22, and at Fader Fort on 10/23. I attended Europa and caught the tail end of Cerebral Ballzy and the entire 20+ minute OFF! set which was, exactly how I like my hardcore: brutal, unrelenting, lightning fast, and intensely fun. Fans of Circle Jerks, Black Flag, and early 80s hardcore take note, these guys rule.

OFF! currently has two dates on their calendar though none on the east coast. November 7th will see the band play Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin (tickets) while two+ weeks later the band will appear at Vacation Vinyl in Los Angeles for an in-store.

OFF! performed their entire first EP (of four) on Carson Daly on 10/15 (before CMJ). Dig on video of that, some video from Europa courtesy of ((unartig))), and lots of pictures from Europa, Fader Fort, and Generation Records, setlists included, below.

Broken Bells

"Complete with a stage full of awesome musicians, a cool video projection in the background and James Mercer singing only to me (ok, that part may have just been in my imagination) [Broken Bells put on] a pretty far out show. I thought maybe the live performance of their songs might have gotten a little cooler, the guys didn't really stray too much from the album version, which was a little disappointing, but they did play a cool cover of a Black Keys song." -[Via Le Shrn]
Broken Bells and Elf Power teamed up for a show at Terminal 5 in NYC on Monday night (10/11). Through the magic of television, Broken Bells also appeared on two LA-based talk shows on Monday and Tuesday, taped when the band was in LA to also play the Wiltern in LA last week (and at the Wiltern). Between LA and NYC, they stopped by for a set at Austin City Limits which also had them covering Sparklehorse and Black Keys songs (both artists that Broken Bells member Danger Mouse has worked with as a producer). Full T5 setlist below.

the xx

"In a recent interview, the xx talked about expanding their sound. So much has happened to them in the short space of time since they recorded this debut that their next record can't fail to be infused with this experience. All the more reason to cherish this album, then. For this was more than just the sound of 2009, it was a distinctive musical statement of the like we may never get to hear again." [The Guardian]
The xx finished a tour with Friendly Fires at Webster Hall in NYC on December 5th. We already did a post about that show, but then the very talented Paul Birman mentioned he had a set of pictures that could use a home. Those are the pictures in this post.

Five days after the NYC show, The xx made their network television debut on the Carson Daly show. Video from appearance is below.

And I'm not sure what brings them back, but The xx must be hanging around a bit because they have another NYC appearance scheduled for January 2nd.. It's not a live show though, they are just DJing at Le Poisson Rouge at a late night party with VHS or Beta Dee Jays and Finger On The Pulse. Tickets are $5+fee if you buy them in advance or slightly more if you wait for the door.

Tickets are also still on sale for the show that The xx is playing with Hot Chip at Terminal 5 on April 22nd.

All dates with the rest of those pictures and the video below...

Ida Maria @ Union Hall (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
Ida Maria

Ida Maria will be touring North America with fellow Europeans Glasvegas in the Spring (basically from probably-SXSW to probably-Coachella). That tour includes a March 28th show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (on sale at noon today) and the March 30th one at Webster Hall (still on sale). After recently seeing Glasvegas at Bowery Ballroom and Ida Maria at Mercury Lounge (which was a day before her show at Union Hall), I've come to the conclusion that the opener will be giving the better live performance on this tour. I would say, "that sucks that she's opening", but her headlining sets were only 30 minutes, so it probably doesn't make a difference. All in all though, a good double bill of two buzzed bands from overseas.

Did anyone catch Ida on Carson Daly the other night? I can't find a video, but there are some from the Union Hall show below...

Cloud Cult painting

Speaking of needing ways to fund the ever-increasing cost of touring, Cloud Cult has an ingenious method (though not necessarily an original one) for making extra cash at shows. A painter (usually Craig's wife) paints a painting on stage while the band is playing. Then they silent-auction the painting off to the crowd. Not only does the winner get a unique piece of merch to remember the show by, Cloud Cult makes decent money - probably more than they make from ticket sales at some shows. Someone told me they've sold them for as high as $2000, and they always seem to sell for at least a few hundred dollars at the shows I'm at.

They painted the above one the other day on the Carson Daly show, and now everyone has the chance to buy it.

A picture of the one they painted at their last Brooklyn show at Union Hall is below...

The Heavy @ SXSW (w/ Playboy bunnies) (more by Ryan Muir)
The Heavy @ SXSW

After absolutely manhandling SXSW, with appearances at the Counter Records Showcase, the +1 House Party, and a still-buzzed-about Playboy Rock the Rabbit party, Noid outfit THE HEAVY are coming back to the states (and Canada) to plunder our major cities. This time, they come armed with an official U.S. release (Great Vengeance and Furious Fire, out April 8th) and their signature wolf howl, but in a perfect American accent. [PR}
The Heavy end their short tour this week with NYC shows on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Exact tour dates, and video from their May 6th Carson Daly appearance, below....

Henry Rollins & doll, Birmingham, AL, Feb 19, 2008 (CRED)
Henry Rollins and doll

"The older I get, the more I enjoy touring and being on stage," said Rollins, 47. "I've tailored my life around the tour. Being off the road is a depressing experience."

Rollins likes being a loner, a fiery outspoken rebel with many causes. Tonight, Rollins will spout off about politics, music and whatever else may come to mind in a nearly three-hour spoken-word performance.... [Baltimore Sun, yesterday]

Henry Rollins is in Brooklyn for a two-night spoken word stand at Warsaw tonight (Feb 27) and tomorrow (Feb 28). I have two pairs of tickets to give away. Want to win? Learn how, and watch a video of Henry on Carson Daly, below....
