Andrew of Castevet
Though reportedly no champagne bottles were popped, nor was the gatorade dumped on anyone, Lit Lounge's bill on June 7th was a celebration on many levels. Castevet welcomed their new LP Mounds of Ash into this world via Profound Lore Records (cop it) and brought along with them an unstoppable bill to mark the occasion. Precious Metal recently celebrated four years in existence, and it was PM founder Curran Reynolds's birthday!
Castevet is hitting the road with Altar of Plagues and Velnias for a string of shows leading up to their NYC appearance at The Studio at Webster Hall on August 1st with Man's Gin. Tickets are on sale.
Mounds of Ash
If you're anything like me, you've probably been bumping the latest Altar of Plagues EP, Tides, for a few weeks now (order a copy). The EP is the follow-up to the band's incredible 2009 LP (one of my faves of the year) White Tomb and while I've thoroughly enjoyed all of their work thus far, I've yet to catch the Irish black metal combo live. That will change this summer!
BrooklynVegan and Haunting The Chapel are proud to present the NYC debut of Altar of Plagues with Velnias, Castevet, and Man's Gin on August 1st at The Studio @ Webster Hall! Tickets are on sale for the show, which is part of a larger tour for AoP and Velnias.
Altar of Plagues recently, and triumphantly, played Roadburn 2010 (twice!) alongside an amazing cast of characters despite the volcanic ash situation. Streaming sets from the band's appearance aren't currently available, but sets by Brant Bjork, Earthless, Firebird, Horisont, Nachtmystium, Pagan Altar, Shever, Trinacria and Yob are! Scoot on over to check them out.
Castevet will share multiple dates with the AoP/Velnias tour, and the band recently welcomed their new LP Mounds of Ash on Profound Lore Records. Check out the NEW track from the LP "Red Aura" available for download above. The band will celebrate that release with an absolutely unmissable lineup that will play alongside the NYC band at Lit Lounge on Monday 6/7: Woe, Batillus, and Flourishing!
While Man's Gin is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Erik Wunder of Cobalt, don't mistake his new project for a war metal assault. Man's Gin is more akin to a mix of Tom Waits, Alice In Chains, or Angels of Light, but is nonetheless a fascinating listen. A teaser for the band's upcoming LP is available above, look for it later this year on Profound Lore Records, and get to The Studio early!

Krallice at Union Pool (more by Lori Baily)
Who needs Mayhem with a lineup like this? BrooklynVegan and Osiris are proud to present that the great Ludicra will team up with Krallice, Castevet, and Atakke for a killer show at Europa on 4/18. Tickets on sale soon. A few more announced Ludicra dates are below.
BrooklynVegan is also on board as the official sponsor for the Profound Lore/20 Buck Spin Official Showcase at Headhunters on 3/19 during SxSW. Ludicra won't be on that show, but the killer trio of Salome (who is also playing a BV Day Party), Coffinworm, and Yakuza will be reppin' the label.

words by Kim Kelly with intro by BBG, photos by Diana Lee Zadlo
Those of you who travel in the underground metal circles, and live to tell about it, have probably encountered Kim Kelly. The current Philadelphian, whose credits include Terrorizer, Hails & Horns, Metal Injection, Noisecreep, her own PR company (CatharsisPR) and many other ventures, is probably the girl you see on the verge of whiplash in the front row of Eyehategod, or the smiley one with the invisible orange.
In her latest travels, Kelly took a trip to Richmond to take in the Heart of Winter Fest at Alley Katz in Richmond, VA (Friday, Jan 29- Saturday, Jan 30, 2010). The two-day festival featured appearances from Woe, Bastard Sapling, Battlemaster, Evoken, and many others. The "Winter" fest was also, appropriately enough, hit with a major storm that buried the mid-Atlantic in snow. Rather than get buried south of the Mason-Dixon line amidst 24 inches, she and Diana Lee Zadlo opted to leave before it was over, or as the kids call it, GTFO. Her full story is below...

Kraliice's Mick Barr (solo) at Show No Mercy September edition
After a triumphant debut, the mighty Krallice is back with Dimensional Bleedthrough, their NEW LP for Profound Lore! Due on Nov 10th, the band recently debuted the title track, but now dig on their latest skullcrusher "The Mountain" available above! Featuring the meaty guttural screams of bassist Nick McMaster on vox instead of the banshee wail of virtuoso Mick Barr, "The Mountain" is a seriously heavy track. Check out the cover art and track listing for the album below.
To celebrate the release, the band will team up with Malkuth, Orphan, and Liturgy at Union Pool for a show on November 13th! That date is just 12 days after the virtuosic Colin Marston is scheduled to play NYC with Dysrhythmia as the last date of their tour. Right before that Liturgy and Malkuth also share a bill at Market Hotel on Halloween.
Mick Barr recently played the September edition of Show No Mercy alongside the mighty Gnaw, Castevet, and Period. A few more pics from that show are below.
Castevet AND Malkuth are also on board to play Union Pool with the incredamazing Woe and the equally awesome Aluk Todolo on 10/4. $8 gets you in.

As if Burnt By The Sun, Tombs, Black Anvil, and Bloodhorse at Cake Shop (10/2) wasn't enough, now you can look forward to a SECOND helping of heaviness on the first weekend in October! Just two nights after the Cake Shop is set ablaze, storm clouds will roll into town as BrooklynVegan is proud to present Woe, Aluk Todolo, Malkuth, and Castevet at Union Pool on 10/4! $8 gets you in the door.
Woe's smashing LP, A Spell For The Death of Man, recently saw a vinyl release and is currently available for pay-what-you-want download.
Frenchmen Aluk Todolo dabble in a hybrid of black metal and krautrock (seriously!), and feature members of Diamatregon. Their new album Finsternis is out NOW, pick that up at Aquarius Records, who called it "a slow shifting otherworld defined by This Heat, Geronimo, Laddio Bolocko, Can, [and] Faust". The Union Pool show is part of a short US tour that also includes a few other NYC dates including Music Hall of Williamsburg with Faust on 10/1 (part of the WFMU Festival). All dates below.
Malkuth and Castevet both played shows this past weekend: Malkuth at Lit Lounge with Dark Castle, Orphan, and The Body, Castevet at Show No Mercy on 9/6 with Gnaw, Mick Barr, and Period. Pic sets from those shows are on the way.
A Woe video and the show flyer are with the dates below...
