Moby @ Irving Plaza - Sept 21, 2009 (amaindrault)
Moby

A lot of dancing went down last week & weekend but I missed most of it. Hopefully you were able to catch the Rapture at Matchless, Moby at Irving Plaza or Music Hall of Williamsburg, or some of the many other shows & dance parties that happened last week. If not, there are plenty of opportunities to make up for it this week, starting with Thursday (9/23):

Yacht

Yacht do not have shows coming up at Radio City or Music Hall, but they are playing Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn tonight (9/4) before playing some dates with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in non-NY locations. Doors are at 8:30 and it's $10 to get in. Eamon Harkin will be DJing and YACHT perform at 10:30pm.

After Yacht, no reason to leave Glasslands (except maybe to the street before being let back in). There's a Flashing Lights party happening afterwards at the same venue:

Friday September 4th 12:00am
Mean Red + Good Peoples present FLASHING LIGHTS
TOADALLY KROSSED OUT (MAD DECENT)
DJ AYRES (T&A / THE RUB)
NICK CATCHDUBS (FOOL'S GOLD)
JUBILEE vs UDACHI (NIGHTSHIFTERS)
Flyer below.

Yacht's new album See Mystery Lights was released by DFA in July. An MP3 from that is above. Two videos, along with all tour dates, are also below...

MSTRKRFT @ the 2009 Rothbury Festival (more by Graeme Flegenheimer - NSFW)
Rothbury

Last weekend I finally made it out dancing on a day other than Sunday for a change. Saturday night I headed to the Tribeca Grand's basement where Fixed was making its welcome return. I caught the last two songs of Free Energy's set. It was my first time seeing the band, and as much as two songs aren't much to go by, they at least made me want to hear more. Following Free Energy, Dave P deejayed a bit, playing Fixed's typically awesome mix of very current dance tracks from a variety of genres, while the stage was set up for Lemonade.

I have nothing against Lemonade, but have never really gotten into their music so I sat tight during their set, patiently waiting for Riton to begin his. He finally went on somewhere around 2/2:30 and to the degree I really wasn't too familiar with his music to begin with (save for a remix here & there), his selections were very unexpected. It's all a bit of a blur now...lots of current stuff, with a lot of really random tracks thrown in (ie Abba's "Voulez Vous") that worked beautifully and had everyone who had stuck around getting down. The early ending (3:30) left things a little bittersweet (I wanted that last half hour!), but overall it was a great night.

While there is no Fixed party happening this week, there are lots of other great events sure to have you dancing through your weekend. Here's what's going on, starting with Thursday (7/30):

MALUCA
MaluCa

Last week in dance was not my favorite. I enjoyed Losoul's set at Sunday Best, and the urban landscape "Afterparty" at Warm Up at PS1 (though not the music so much) . More about both of those in Part 2 of the Week In Dance. For now, here's what's happening Thursday & Friday:

The Phenomenal Handclap Band @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (more by Ryan Muir)
The Phenomenal Handclap Band

"We are so very pleased to introduce you to our latest signing, The Phenomenal Handclap Band. They're an NYC supergroup led by veteran producers Daniel Collas and Sean Marquand, and featuring contributions from L'Trimm, Calla, Sí Se, TV on the Radio, The Dap Kings, & The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. PHB blend psychedelic space disco & smooth 60s-style soul perfectly with early hip hop, and moody, synth-soaked hooks. We'll be releasing their debut album this summer. " [Friendly Fire Recordings]
The band's next, and only upcoming gig is a free show at Southpaw in Brooklyn on Tuesday, May 12th with Golden Triangle and Wizardry. Details on that, and some videos of PHB at SXSW, below...

Trevor Jackson @ Studio B

Last week in dance was a lot of fun despite only going to one event - Primetime meets Fixed at Studio B. I caught most of Eamon Harkin's set in which he masterfully mixed up some disco, house, and techno. House of House, who I hadn't seen before, truly lived up to their name in terms of their selections. The Studio B crowd was feeding off of the duo's enthusiasm as House of House animatedly delivered track after track. As much as I enjoyed their set I was extremely excited and anxious for Trevor Jackson to begin. The set Trevor finally delivered at nearly 2:30 was well worth the wait. For the next hour an a half he played an excellent set that was heavy on house and disco, with some modern subtleties. Despite only being able to identify "Heaven's In the Backseat of My Cadillac" by Hot Chocolate, "Situation" by Yaz, and "Use Me" by Runaway out of the entire set, it was easily one of the better dj sets I've witnessed in '09 thus far.

I have to admit I'm more excited about seeing David Byrne than getting down this weekend, but here are some options if you'd rather not leave the dancing to the man in the big suit:

I was really, really looking forward to last week in dance, but it wound up being just alright (part of which was my fault). Friday night I went to Trusme's new monthly at APT, Disco3000. While there was good disco thanks to Kon & Amir, Trusme (who I was most looking forward to) was nowhere to be seen. I arrived at APT around 12:30, so theoretically I could have missed him. I would think even if that were the case he would have been hanging around though. Who knows...

A couple of notable things: APT was finally fittingly packed with people dancing (the past few times I'd been there recently it was dead). 2. There was someone "deejaying" who I didn't recognize, who wasn't mixing the songs. There were a couple of failed attempts...and then complete pauses in between each song. Really broke the momentum and my disco heart as the songs probably would have made for a good set if they had been mixed together.

Saturday night was a total debacle on my part. I was running around doing a bunch of things during the day...and by the time I would have left to see Romanthony at Love I was completely out of energy. Epic fail followed by immediate regret. Did any of you go?

Despite just having an OK time last week, I am still very optimistic about this week. There are lots of potentially awesome dancefloor scenarios that could unfold - here's what's up for Thursday (1/22) & Friday (1/23)...

MONH

As Showtrotta pointed out, "Nick Catchdubs is deejaying the Fader's monthly museum get down, One Step Beyond, at the American Museum of Natural History along with Michna (Ghostly)." That happens tonight, Friday November 21st, from 9pm-1am (21+).

Ten hours later, Saturday November 22nd, at the same museum:

The American Museum of Natural History will open an outdoor skating rink for the first time in its 140-year history. The Museum's new Polar Rink, made from synthetic ice, is located on the Arthur Ross Terrace, with magnificent views of the glowing Rose Center for Earth and Space and the surrounding Theodore Roosevelt Park. Skaters will glide around a 17-foot-tall polar bear made of openwork stainless steel festooned with pine boughs and twinkling lights. Engaging facts about polar bears and the Earth's polar regions, as well as "green" tips and suggestions, will surround the rink, extending the Museum experience beyond its halls.
An ice skating rink is also opening at South Street Seaport (and that one will have Friday night shows).

I have one pair of tickets to giveaway to Friday's One Step Beyond party. How to win them, and the flyer, below...
