MEN at Webster Hall in 2011 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
JD Samson & MEN have an upcoming west coast tour, but before that they'll play a benefit in Brooklyn at Littlefield this Friday (1/24) with Bright Light Bright Light. The show is billed as an evening of dancing live music benefitting the Hetrick-Martin Institute, "which provides empowerment, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ youth in New York and New Jersey." The show is being hosted by Ana Matronic of Scissor Sisters and Jonjon Battles is DJing. Tickets for that show are available. All dates are listed, along with the show flyer, below.
"I think of myself as an artist before I'm a musician," she says. "I studied art and theory and learned about self-expression that way; music is just the genre where success came. But when we talk about people using software to learn how to create songs, I think of this: Punk music used to be about self-taught people playing in garages. Now, the self-taught crowd is working from a studio in the bedroom. The aesthetic is very similar - it's about teaching yourself to express opinions through your creativity, to find a channel for those ideas. It seems like a natural progression to me."In related news, speaking of Scissor Sisters (whose Ana Matronic hosts the Littlefield show), their drummer Randy Real is now also the drummer of Gaslight Anthem frontman Brian Fallon's new band Molly and the Zombies, which Brian debuted at the Bouncing Souls holiday shows in December. The lineup also includes Catherine Popper (Ryan Adams & the Cardinals, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals) and Brian McGee. The band recently posted two tracks online, which you can stream, along with the list of MEN dates, below.
That said, one thing listeners will quickly notice is that the vocals on "Labor" have a slicker production value than on MEN's debut. Samson cops to using pitch control, but in alignment with her general M.O., for her it's a tool of expression rather than any sort of crutch or bid for popularity. Given that she was a film student just prior to the digital revolution, she's got a healthy respect for the handcraft of art (in general) and avoids shortcuts. But she also knows how to exploit a fun toy when she finds it.
Levon Helm at Summerstage, July 2011 (more by Chris La Putt)
The great Levon Helm will be paid tribute on 11/19 at Hill Country (30 w26th St, Manhattan), when Catherine Popper (of Levon Helm/Jack White/Ryan Adams/Grace Potter's bands) will assemble Puss 'n Boots (which probably means Norah Jones) to lead a benefit at the venue. Levon's charity 'Keep It Going!' will be the receipient of the proceeds, a charity designed to keep Midnight Ramble, the studio and associated properties up and running. Joining Popper will be performances from Suzanna Choffel, Fredro Perry, The Cheating Hearts, and Bug & Bru (of The Defibulators). $20 gets you in.
This isn't the first time that a member of Grace Potter's band has been involved in a benefit; the frontwoman herself performed at a Levon Helm tribute show in early October.
Meanwhile check out pictures from the Austin show.

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals played a secret show at Rockwood Music Hall's new Stage 2 last night (4/22). The gig came between the appearance they made in Times Square for Earth Day that morning, and the one they're playing for Earth Day at Grand Central today.
"Stage 2" has been open less than a month. Larger than Stage 1, the 150+ capacity room had tables set up but there was plenty of room for anyone that showed up. It got packed by the end of their performance though. Playing from 8:30 until almost 10, their set was a mix of old and brand new songs. Grace was talkative and thanked the venue for setting up the show so last minute. Nocturnals bassist Catherine Popper has played Rockwood (Stage 1) many times by herself (and with others). Pictures and videos from the show continue below.
Also below, a set of never-before-published pics from a show Grace Potter headlined at the much larger Webster Hall in 2008. It's the same venue she'll headline on June 12th of this year. Tickets go on sale at noon. Pictures below...

"Wheeler has been hired to write the "Shrek" spinoff "Puss in Boots" for DreamWorks Animation, a stand-alone feature foray for the feline assassin/swordsman voiced by Antonio Banderas in the two most recent "Shrek" films. The "Shrek" franchise has ballooned into a multibillion-dollar property, with three feature films grossing more than $2 billion worldwide in theaters, tens of millions of DVDs sold and merchandising in every toy store. A fourth feature film, "Shrek Goes Fourth," is due in theaters May 21, 2010." [The Hollywood Reporter]"Puss in Boots" the movie actually has nothing to do with Puss n Boots the band who played Rockwood Music Hall on Saturday night (5/9). More pictures from that show below...
