Year-end list season began earlier this week, and now metal mag Decibel has published their Top 40 Albums of 2015. You can check out artwork and commentary if you pick up the issue, and browse the full list below. Like last year, they saved the top spot for a promising young band (and actually this time the #2 slot is one too). But they've of course got veterans as always, like Enslaved (#37), Napalm Death (#25), Iron Maiden (#23), Satan (#12), Killing Joke (#10) and more. They have a good amount of the "indie crossover" metal on there, like Ghost (#34), Myrkur (#28), Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats (#27), Deafheaven (#19) and the Baroness album that isn't even out yet coming in at #6. There are also comeback albums from two not-exactly-metal bands: Failure (#22) and Refused (#15). Check out the full list below.
Two bands on this list will be going on the Decibel Mag tour in 2016.

Another day, another metal supergroup is formed. Legendary New Orleans metal figurehead Phil Anselmo will be joining forces with Jesse Schobel of Strong Intention, John Jarvis (who recently joined as the bassist for not one but two Scott Hull grindcore bands, Pig Destroyer and Agoraphobic Nosebleed), Derek Engemann of Cattle Decapitation, and Chase Fraser of Animosity to form Scour.
Anselmo discussed Scour in an interview with hellbound.ca which, like all Anselmo interviews, is very much worth a read. He mentions that he has an unnamed, unreleased death metal album recorded and describes Scour as "modern-ish black metal-sounding"
Meanwhile, Anselmo's Housecore Festival is coming up in November, and his band Superjoint will be playing, along with Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Superjoint are also touring with Danzig, and they'll be playing a couple other shows before that tour kicks off too.
Check out a video of Phil Anselmo giving a drunk interview, along with all upcoming Superjoint dates, below...

Plenty of great metal, hardcore and other heavy shows in NYC are getting announced all the time. We don't get a chance to write about all of them, so here's a roundup of some recently-announced stuff coming up:
Pennsylvania death metal band Rivers of Nihil will release their sophomore album, Monarchy, this week via Metal Blade (pre-order), and they're in NYC TONIGHT (8/19) to celebrate at Saint Vitus. Opening is the great local mathcore band Meek Is Murder and NJ's Cognitive. Tickets are on sale now. You can stream the new album in full below.
Norway's legendary Enslaved will return to North America in the fall for a tour with polished progressive metal bands Between the Buried and Me (the headliners) and Intronaut. That tour hits NYC on December 15 at Irving Plaza. Tickets are on Citi/Live Nation/Blastbeat/Ticketmaster presales now (password: "crowdsurf") and the general on-sale starts Friday (8/21) at 10 AM. Invisible Oranges just published a piece on BTBAM's new album, and wrote:
Between The Buried And Me sport incomparable technical skill, and their process of pushing tiny musical motifs to their logical conclusion is astoundingly thorough. But as they've gotten more compositionally ambitious, their ability to write songs that make sense on a moment to moment basis has fallen by the wayside. Each section of a typical Between The Buried And Me song is well constructed by itself, but as the band's career has gone on they've started to have trouble transitioning smoothly, resorting to full stops before shifting gears or making jarring leaps in key or tempo. On a more positive note, Enslaved released their 13th album In Times earlier this year, and you can watch the lyric video for "Thurisaz Dreaming" from that, below.
Where previously BTBAM could make these kinds of drastic choices come across as unpredictable and exciting they now only serve to disrupt the momentum and cheapen the impact of their jaw dropping instrumental prowess. Metalsucks once compared BTBAM to LeBron James but these days they are more like James Harden; prodigiously talented, clearly very good at what they set out to do, but holy shit can they be a slog to actually watch.

Cannibal Corpse, Cattle Decapitation and Soreption are touring together this fall. They aren't hitting NYC, but will be nearby for Long Island's Emporium on 10/14 (tickets) and Pougheepsie's The Chance on 10/16 (tickets). Cattle Decapitation's new album The Anthropocene Extinction came out earlier this month on Metal Blade. You can stream it in full below.
Doom trio Castle are hitting the road in the fall, and playing NYC on November 16 at the Acheron. Tickets will be on sale soon via Ticketfly.
One-man industrial metal project Author & Punisher is touring soon with Muscle and Marrow, and hitting Brooklyn's Saint Vitus on November 3. Tickets are on sale.
Another one-man industrial project, Alberich, is playing with Azar Swan and Lussuria at the Acheron on October 2. Tickets are on sale now. You can also catch Alberich sooner with Sannhet and Uniform at Saint Vitus on Friday (8/21) (tickets).
The over-the-top Hellbent Hooker, who feature members of Ramming Speed and Mutilation Rites, play Saint Vitus on September 19 with Pink Mass and Prostitution. Tickets are on sale.
This week, the Trap Them / Full of Hell tour hits NYC at the Acheron on Thursday (8/20). Tickets for that show are still available. Other recently-discussed heavy shows/tours include GWAR, Danzig / Superjoint / Prong, Deafheaven / Envy / Tribulation, Locrian, Judas Priest & Mastodon and YOB / Black Cobra. Check out more in last week's roundup.
In addition to the new music already mentioned in this post, and the new Iron Maiden song, we got a couple other exciting new streams recently too. Indie-pop-turned-black-metal musician Amalie Bruun (of Ex-Cops, Frankie Rose's band, etc) is streaming her debut Myrkur album, M, which comes out this week via Relapse. Listen below, and check out Joseph Schafer's review at Invisible Oranges.
Sweden's not-actually-metal band Ghost will also drop their third album Meliroa this week on Loma Vista, and they're streaming it now. Listen below, and catch Ghost in NYC on their acoustic tour this weekend (8/23) and their full-band tour in September. Joseph from IO also recently wrote about "Ten Songs I Want Ghost to Cover,", including Perfume Genius, Justin Timberlake and more.

In other metal book news, a new Slayer biography has emerged, titled Slayer 66 2/3: The Jeff & Dave Years. A Metal Band Biography. The book was written by DX Herris, who previously has written about Slayer in his 33 1/3 series entry, Slayer's Reign in Blood. The book clocks in at a whopping 628 and here's a description:
This timely rock biography answers burning questions, shatters popular myths, and uncovers new truths about Slayer, the iconic group that became the embodiment of heavy metal. This full-length, exhaustively researched account of the thrash kings' career recaps and reevaluates the years guitar hero Jeff Hanneman and drum legend Dave Lombardo were in the group. Over the course of 59 chapters, 400 footnotes and three appendices, it profiles the members and presents dramatic scenes from 32 years in the Abyss: A fresh look at the group's early days. Reign in Blood tours. A European invasion. The Palladium riot. The seat cushion chaos concert. Newly unearthed details from Lombardo's turbulent history with the band. Historical artwork and photos never seen in public before. The entire diabolical discography. Hanneman's hard times. The Big Four's big year. Lombardo's final exit...And a lot more -- sounds pretty thorough. It's currently available in an interactive e-book edition for... $6.66.
Slayer recently rolled through Madison Square Garden with Gojira on their first tour since the passing of Jeff Hanneman. We'll have photos soon -- did you go?

Dillinger Escape Plan at Terminal 5 (more by Greg Cristman)
Good news, bad news, good news. Let's start with the bad and then go to the good.
The RSVP for the Dillinger Escape Plan show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 27 with The Faceless and Royal Thunder has run dry. That said, we have a pair to giveaway to a lucky individual, details on how to get into this Converse Rubber Tracks event are below.
In addition, DEP has announced that they will headline the Summer Slaughter festival for 2013, snagging support from Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, The Ocean, Revocation, AEON, Rings of Saturn and Thy Art is Murder. Though dates as a whole have yet to be revealed, look for that lineup to play House of Blues in Los Angeles on July 20 and Best Buy Theater in NYC on August 7. Tickets for the latter go on sale April 19 at noon.
Contest details and song streams are below.
Pallbearer at Knitting Factory, September 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Decibel Magazine has compiled their annual list of top 40 albums of the year. As usual, there are some surprises but the 2012 top ten is basically a list of nine veterans with only a single newcomer to the bunch. The full list of top records of the year according to Decibel Magazine is below, along with a tweet from the winning band. Buy your copy HERE.
Misery Index at Europa (more by Samantha Marble)
Due to a series of unfortunate events, we're not doing any shows on any shockwave/Fear Factory/Voivod etc. tour. It's cancelled. Sorry for the confusion, we are extremely upset about this and sorry to any fans who bought tix. [Misery Index]To say that the Shockwave tour, which featured Misery Index with Voivod, Cattle Decapitation, Fear Factory and more, was an unmitigated disaster is probably an understatement. All dates were cancelled in the wake of cancellations by Voivod and Fear Factory (the tour did not have a planned stop in NYC).
That said, Misery Index is picking up the pieces and scheduling dates on the East Coast in the wake of this, crossing paths with a burgeoning tour from Baltimore grind greats Triac and Amputee for a show at Saint Vitus on August 16th. Tickets are on sale for the show that will also feature Radiation Black Body and Strong Intention.
All Misery Index dates and some video is below.
Converge at MHoW (more by Johnathan McPhail)
Converge frontman Jacob Bannon has announced plans to release a split under the moniker Wear Your Wounds with Revelator (Ben Chisholm of Chelsea Wolfe's backing band) on the other side.
We've already mentioned how Converge has been added to a monumental show with Rorschach and Xaddax (who are throwing a record release show on Tuesday at DBA).
It might be cause of today's status as an unofficial holiday of sorts, but there are a hefty amount of shows going on in the next few days... one bigger show that has seemingly flown under the radar is sweep-picking death-metal lunatics Origin with Cattle Decapitation, Decrepit Birth, Aborted, Rings of Saturn, Battlecross, Face of Ruin at Europa on April 24th. Tickets are still available, OR you can try and win a pair. Details are below. The show is part of a larger tour for the band and dates are also below.
On their way to Chaos in Tejas, The Mob (UK) will stop into Brooklyn to play Death By Audio on May 29th. The UK anarcho-punk band will be joined by Sickoids, Nomad, and Anasazi at the venue, and it'll set you back $10 at the door.
Speaking of release parties, Levil Uniform, the skater/extreme music zine, will be throwing a shownext friday at the Grand Victory for their fifteenth issue with local crew Syphilitic Lust and others playing through out the night. That same night, the great Hank Wood & The Hammerheads will bless Don Pedro's.. details are below.
Obnoxiously fun punk band Beer & Cable will officially christen the recently relaunched Acheron on May 5th as part of a show with The Regressives, Agitator, ZTs and Trepanning.
Some interesting additions to some May shows also happened this week. Meek Is Murder was tacked onto the coming Tournament show at Acheron on 5/4, while the supporting bill for the previously discussed Power Trip bill was fleshed out to include Crushed and Brain Slug.
More suggested shows, a stream of the new Rwake 7" (which only be available at their merch booth for Maryland Deathfest X, don't forget about their NYC show), a Code Orange Kids video, Homewrecker featuring Dylan Walker from Full of Hell, and a Black Breath video from their latest LP is below (don't forget about their NYC show). What did I miss?

Here's a scary thought. 1,226 thrash metal fans met up to catch Autopsy and Nuclear Assault headline a festival of high-octane metal that also featured appearances from Cattle Decapitation, Exmortus, Hatchet, Skinlab, Undivided, Vindicator, Warbringer, Whiplash, Witchaven and Zombie Holocaust. Needless to say, a lot of pitting and stage diving went down at Craneway Pavilion in Richmond, CA on Saturday June 25th for the second annual Slaughter by The Water. Pictures from the festival adorn this post.
For headliner Autopsy, the show was one of only two US dates scheduled for this year, with the second going down a few weeks prior at Chaos in Tejas. Nuclear Assault also recently played a festival date as well at Maryland Deathfest, which Witchaven played as part of their tour with Nocturnal that hit NYC.
Slaughter By The Water III is already in the works. More pictures from Slaughter By The Water II below...

Mayhem at Irving Plaza (more by Paul Birman)
With the end clearly in sight, the Mayhem tour has withered (pun!) away into a solo tour with the defection of Cephalic Carnage, Cattle Decapitation, and Withered from the ranks. Marduk has been AWOL since the start. Our colleague Justina Villanova reports for Metal Injection:
It was a brutal (not in a good way) end to the tour. For the most part, no one got to say goodbye to anyone. It was abrupt and unexpected (that's what she said). Most of all, it painted the final picture of the kind of people Mayhem are.Yikes. Her side of the story continues here. All affected tour dates are below...

Attila, all dressed up and ready to destroy! (Photo by Perole)
Mayhem has arrived, both literally and figuratively. After a failed tour attempt in 2007, the legendary Norwegian Black Metal band will concurrently celebrate their 25th anniversary and kick off their first EVER US tour TONIGHT (5/21) at Irving Plaza! Tickets are still available at the door. All dates below...
Joining Attila, Necrobutcher, and Hellhammer (not their real names), are corpsepainted Swedes Marduk, hazy deathgrinders Cephalic Carnage, sickos Lair Of The Minotaur, and blackened doom favorites Withered!
You won't see any pictures on BrooklynVegan by Justina Villanueva for the next month. That's because she is hitting the road with this historic Blackened Fest, documenting her, and Mayhem's, travels along the way. Her first shot comes from a practice session that Mayhem had in the five boroughs... Dig on drummer Hellhammer's kit, and all tour dates, below...

The Devil & The Sea
One record that I gave alot of spins in 2008, but didnt make my year end faves was The Devil & The Sea's Heart vs Spine (pick that up here). The band is gearing up to tour the Northeast and have added a date at The Charleston on Mar 31st with another band that has been ringing my ears lately, Music Hates You. Full tour dates are below.

My favorite of the two Oceans, the one missing a definite article in front of their name (Ocean of Maine), will be the next heavy band to headline Show No Mercy at Public Assembly (Feb 15th). As part of some sort of bizarre doom-off, Ocean will try to out rumble and underpace the mighty Salome, Riff Cannon, and Batillus who are also on board for the (anti-) festivities. Both Ocean (profiled here) and Salome (who we profiled in August) released full-length LPs last year... Pantheon of The Lesser and S/T respectively. Riff Cannon will drop their debut LP in 2009 and Batillus recently made their new self-titled EP available for free download here.
Speaking of Salome, lead vocalist Kat will make her first Agoraphobic Nosebleedappearance on Agorapocalypse, the latest LP from Scott Hull's pummeling grindcore project. Due April 14th, Agorapocalypse won't be the lone AnB in 2009; the band plans a series of splits for this year with a wide array of bands including Despise You, ANS, Agents of Satan and Thrones!
Mayhem, Marduk, Cattle Decapitation, and Cephalic Carnage have added a date together in Seattle Washington @ Studio Seven on June 5th. Pleasegodletitbeafulltour... Pleasegodletitbeafulltour... Cattle Decapitation's The Harvest Floor dropped on Jan 20th.

Adding insult on top of insult to injury, Maryland Death Fest have added powerviolence bad-asses Despise You (with Phil Vera of Crom), as well as grinders Pigsty. This is on top of Mayhem, Bolt Thrower, Enslaved and soooo many others... Unfortunately, Repulsion have cancelled their appearance.
Need a fix of fun, skull-splitting hardcore? Vitamin X have dropped their new record, Full Scale Assault on Tankcrimes and it is one awe-inspiring slab of lightning riffery and old-school hardcore punk produced by none other than Steve Albini at Electrical Audio Studios. Sporting ultra-suh-weeeet artwork by John Baizley of Baroness, the band has been kind enough to drop off a pair of MP3s from the record... check out "Deal With it" featuring John Brannon of Negative Approach and "You Suck" downloadable above and pick up the album here.
How many times has a headliner you dug dropped off a bill, and you were actually pleased with the results? In a bit of shuffling, Doomriders have dropped off their bill with Tombs at Union Pool on 12/20 (frown), BUT Bloodhorse (who are working on a new record), Keelhaul(!), and Acid Tiger (Ben from Cave-in, Converge) have been added! So Keelhaul in NYC, huh? Exciting, and it sounds like they have more than just the show on their agenda...
We are going to Brooklyn to record another cd with Andrew Schneider in December. Yee haw.-[Keelhaul myspace]NOICE! Meanwhile, look for Tombs to play a show at Death By Audio on Dec 6th, play a few shows opening for Don Caballero at both Maxwell's and Europa, and embark on a short tour in the new year with Dysrhythmia. Full Keelhaul and Tombs dates are below.
Doomers My Dying Bride have revealed details of their new album, For Lies I Sire due in 2009 via Peaceville! Spanning nine tracks and recorded with producer Mags, vocalist Aaron Stainhorpe recently discussed the new record with Beyond The Dark Horizon.

Mammoth Grinder are scheduled to rage through the tri-state in the new year. The trio will be in town on Jan 3rd to double up.. playing shows at ABC No Rio (matinee) AND The Charleston (night) in support of their long-player Rage & Ruin and No Results 7" due together on Assassinated Records. Alternating between thundering doom and crusty hardcore, check out heavily doom-oriented "God is Stuck in a Black Hole " from Rage & Ruin, downloadable above.
Gracial death-doomers Hooded Menace are responsible for the massive Fulfill The Curse on Razorback Records. It's out NOW and it's absolutely frightening.. highly reccomended for fans of Coffins and death-doom in particular. Check out the track "Grasp Of The Beastwoman" from Fulfill The Curse and pray for your own safety that these Finns never make it to the US... it'll be a massacre.

Kill the Client
Let's kick this thing off the RIGHT way, an absolutely BRUTAL grind record out NOW on Willowtip.... no, not the new Phobia (though that is good, and out NOW) or the new Maruta (also out NOW)... it's Cleptocracy by unstoppable force known as Kill The Client! Blazing through eighteen tracks of searing grindcore, Cleptocracy is both destructive and engaging.... Check out "Cleptocracy and "Divide And Conquer" downloadable above!
* The above Deathwish sampler features songs by Trap Them, Blacklisted, Cold World, Narrows, 108, United Nations, The Hope Conspiracy, Victims, Rot In Hell and many others.
Graf Orlock have announced details of their upcoming cinemagrind monstrosity, Destination Time Today, along with a new track streaming at their myspace! Look for the record to land on Level Plane (Date TBD) possibly around the time that Graf Orlock hits the East Coast for a tour that is (not fully) scheduled for Jan 2009! Check out the basic itinerary below, and hold tight for details to come.
Mastodon have anounced details for Crack The Skye, their upcoming album due in 2009! As discussed, Brendan O'Brien will be on the boards for the seven track (listing below), fifty minute opus which was was recorded at Southern Tracks Studios in Atlanta. Meanwhile, the band has announced a handful of European dates with Metallica (find 'em below).
The sickening crusty hardcore of Planks are one my my latest obsessions, and their limited 12" (500 copies) is out NOW on Narshardaa. Pick it up here and check out "Deluge" from that LP, which the band has made available for download above and scoot on over to Aversionline, who has a second track for download! Also out now on Black Box, a split LP that Planks rocked with Tombs... a taste of which is above in the form of "A Sunken City". Speaking of Tombs, the band permenantly added Andrew Hernandez (ex-ASRA badass) on drums, and I must say that he absolutely KILLED it when I saw them lay waste to the Relapse showcase during CMJ.
Cattle Decapitation have posted a new song from and announced a date for (Jan 20th, 2009- INAUGURATION DAY!) their new album, The Harvest Floor! Hmm.... who's guitar rig could this be?
SUNN O)))So, TWO new sunn o))) records, a Khanate, AND an Æthenor record! We knew that sunn 0))) was working on a new record, but a quick search turned up that Blast First (Petite) will drop that sunn 0))) and Pan Sonic pic 10". On further review, Æthenor's website reveals the following:
Che (SUNN O))) & Pan Sonic do a Suicide cover, pic 10" 2009)
Dimensions (TBA) (2xCD & 2xLP 2009)
Faking Gold & Murder (CD & LP 2008)
Clean Hands Go Foul (LP & Picture Disc 2008, CD & CD Japan 2009)
David Tibet sings and contributes lyrics on the forthcoming Æthenor album; other guests are Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver) and long time Æthenor collaborator Alexander Tucker [who just played ATP].Most importantly though, what the hell is that Khanate record Clean Hands Go Foul?!? Stephen O'Malley had this to say:
The long lost 4th KHANATE album Clean Hands Go Foul will finally emerge later this year. This was recorded directly after the Capture & Release album at Bisi Studio Brooklyn February 2005.James Plotkin, bassist for Khanate, posted one unreleased song excerpt to his website, "Wings From Spine" which is downloadable above. Will "Wings" appear on Clean Hands Go Foul? Who knows, but in the meantime prepare for the thundering evil doom of the mighty Khanate! On a related note, Plotkin's Khlyst, is taking orders for Chaos Live, a multicamera live DVD shot at Hydra Head's CMJ show in 2006. While you're there, pick up Boris's limited-to-1000 Floorshaker 12".
Mastodon's Brent Hinds had a little run-in with King Khan over the weekend, and while we have heard King Khan's side of the story, ridiculous pictures included, we haven't heard a peep from Brent Hinds. My thoughts echo that of one astute Blabbermouth reader: "The real victim here is the beer". Brann Dailor of Mastodon was recently interviewed by Metal Injection.
Justin Broadrick (Jesu, ex-Godflesh) dropped a bombshell of sorts.... a new project, Grey Machine, featuring Aaron Turner (Isis), Diarmuid Dalton (Jesu), and Dave Cochrane (Transitional)! From the upcoming album Disconnected, the band posted "Vultures Rise" available for download above!
Crom is back on the west coast, but evidence from their east coast killing spree is popping up all over the net. Check out pics from their show in Worcester, MA at Return To The Pit, an interview with a shirtless Crom at Vice magazine, as well as audio (and video below) from their appearance at WFMU.
