As always, there's a bunch of great metal and hardcore happening in NYC, so here are some shows to tide you over while you mourn the fact that you can't make it to the Czech Republic for the Insect Warfare reunion.
Recently anointed with the title Best Mall-Metal Debut of All Time by Invisible Oranges, Killswitch Engage are releasing a new album called Incarnate. They will embark upon a huge tour that involves a 5-night NYC residency at venues that would normally be too small for these guys. So if you're at all into seeing them, this is probably the time. This will feature shows at Gramercy Theatre on 3/6, Bowery Ballroom on 3/7, Saint Vitus on 3/9, Marlin Room at Webster Hall on 3/10, and Rough Trade on 3/11. Tickets for all five shows go on sale Friday (1/22) at 10 AM at the above links.
Providence hardcore band Fucking Invincible (members of Dropdead, Daughters, among others) are playing a show at The Acheron on February 27 with V Sect, Mauler and Slav. Tickets for that are on sale now.
Grind masters Magrudergrind just announced a new, Kurt Ballou-produced album and released a single. The album is called II and the new, ripping song is called "Sacrificial Hire," and you can stream it below. In addition to playing that Decibel show in Philly, Magrudergrind have a NYC show coming up before they head out on a massive European tour. That one is also at The Acheron on February 19 with local rippers Mutilation Rites, Incendiary and Triac. Tickets for that are on sale now.
Toronto classicists Cauldron, with an excellent new album In Ruin hot off the presses, will head out on tour and swing through NYC
for a show at Saint Vitus on February 22 with support from Tower. Tickets are on sale now. Stream their LP and check out tour date below.
Since we last spoke, The Ocean have dropped off of that tour with Intronaut and North to be replaced by progsters Scale the Summit. All dates, including Marlin Room at Webster Hall on March 29 (tickets), remain the same.
Now on to the reminders. Since the last roundup, a ton of new stuff has been announced, like Tau Cross, Unearth/Ringworm, Conan/Serial Hawk, Dragged Into Sunlight/Primitive Man/Cult Leader/Churchburn, UXO/Primitive Weapons, Behemoth/Myrkur, Ghost, Cannabis Corpse, Pig Destroyer/Dropdead/Full of Hell, and Whores/Fight Amp.
What else? Oh just Horrendous, Dysrhthmia/Artificial Brain, Poison Idea/Child Bite/Iron Reagan AND Poison Idea/Child Bite/Sheer Terror, Tengger Cavalry, Rivers of Nihil Krallice/Yellow Eyes, Coffins/Noisem/Ilsa, Bell Witch/Wrekmeister Harmonies, Black Tusk, Taake/Young and In the Way/Vattnet Viskar, and Bongzilla/Black Cobra.
Think that's it? Think again. You got Abbath/High on Fire/Skeletonwitch/Tribulation, Abigail Williams/Fleshgod Apocalypse, Melvins/Napalm Death/Melt Banana, Cannibal Corpse/Obituary/Cryptopsy, Voivod/Vektor/Eight Bells, Megadeth/Suicidal Tendencies, Black Sabbath, Slayer/Testament/Carcass, AC/DC, Lamb of God/Anthrax/Deafheaven/Power Trip, and Iron Maiden.
That about does it. What did we miss?

Metalion: The Slayer Mag Diaries cover
"For twenty-five years, Norway's Slayer Mag published the gospel of black metal and death metal, combining eye-ripping graphics, brutally honest writing, and relentless offbeat humor. With this anthology/memoir, editor Jon "Metalion" Kristiansen unfolds the extreme highs and lows of a life lived for heavy metal. Founded in 1985 in Sarpsborg, Norway, Slayer Mag quickly rose to prominence by championing countless unsigned death metal pioneers. The pages of Slayer Mag exploded along with the extreme metal underground, and as black metal rose to prominence in Norway in the 1990s, Slayer Mag remained the final word on the moods and motivations of those dark times.Much like the awesome Touch N Go book that they released last year, Bazillion Points will release METALION: The Slayer Mag Diaries. Containing all issues of the highly influential Slayer zine (issues 1-20), "the precursor Live Wire zine", and a backstory of creator Jon "Metalion" Kristiansen, the book contains multiple interviews from some of the most influential heavy bands of the past 30 years and features forewords by Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates, Disfear), Chris Reifert (Autopsy, Abscess), Fenriz (Darkthrone), Stephen O'Malley (sunn O))), Burning Witch), Erik Danielsson (Watain), Ian christe, and others. Preorders are up.
The astonishing combination of archival material includes scores of key historic interviews with the most revered figures in extreme metal, including Mayhem, Emperor, Slayer, Kreator, Nihilist, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Cathedral, Entombed, Morbid, Napalm Death, Metallica, Opeth, Cradle of Filth, Sadistik Execution, Usurper, Nifelheim, Darkthrone, Sodom, Destruction, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Exodus, Dissection, Candlemass, Carcass, Sepultura, Gorgoroth, Death, Watain, Sadus, Satyricon, Enslaved, Pentagram, Jarboe, Immortal, Possessed, Overkill, Ulver, Dark Angel, and countless others."
Bazillion Points is also responsible for the awesome Only Death is Real, a look into early Celtic Frost & Hellhammer, as well as Hellbent For Cooking, a cookbook featuring recipes from Amebix, Wino, Eyehategod, Cauldron (who play NYC TONIGHT/WEDNESDAY at Union Pool) and many others. They are also responsible for the essential and near-encyclopedic Swedish Death Metal.
"Slayer Mag" is not to be confused with Slayer the band who are playing Yankee Stadium on September 14th. The Metallica Fan Club and other presales are going on now. General sale begins Friday at 10am.

The gallop and shriek of the old school thunder known as Volture echoed through Union Pool on Sunday, 1/30, the third of three US dates in celebration of Shocking Its Prey, the band's new mini-LP. Also on board for the tour were Earache's band of NWOBHM'ers Cauldron, who will welcome their new LP Burning Fortune on Feb 15th and are currently streaming a new track at their myspace.
Rounding out the bill was MVRs (Most Valuable Rookies) Natur, who clearly drew a crowd hungry for homegrown and potent thrash. If you missed Natur, you're in luck, the band will join on with Earache doom gods Hour of 13 and Pilgrim at Cake Shop on March 5th.
Hour of 13 recently parted with vocalist Phil Swanson who has a new project:
NightBitch is the Connecticut based occult heavy metal band featuring Hour of 13 frontman Phil Swanson (vocals) and Hour of 13 live session members Ryan Adams (guitar), Chris Taylor (drums) and Mark Eles (bass). NightBitch is made up of veteran CT musicians all with their own lengthy resumes. They have joined together in NightBitch to bring back melodic traditional heavy metal elements to the state of Connecticut in its purest form.Stream a NightBitch track below, and snag a copy of their LP Sex & Magic at Cyclopean Records. More pictures from Union Pool are also below...
Ryan of Volture/Municipal Waste at Fun Fun Fun (more here)
When he isn't bashing our skulls in with nitro-injected thrash riffs, Municipal Waste's resident guitar nutjob Ryan Waste might be found manning the four string for his other project Volture. The Richmond band takes cues from NWOBHM greats like Angel Witch and Iron Maiden on their new mini-LP, Shocking It's Prey, due on January 25th via Heavy Artillery Records. Check out "Heavy Metal Machine" streaming below.
Volture will play a few dates wiith Cauldron surrounding the release of the LP with, including their official record release show at Union Pool in Brooklyn on January 30th with thrash killers Natur. Full tour dates are below. Cauldron are welcoming their new LP as well; look for Burning Fortune on Earache on 2/15/11.

Municipal Waste ends their tour in their hometown of Richmond on Friday (12/11), and after a month away from the road, hop on a flight to Europe to continue the madness. Phobia carries on from Richmond into the south before ending the tour in Texas.

Dave Witte on stage with Burnt By The Sun at cake shop (more by Paul Birman)
Municipal Waste are currently burning through the US on the strength of critical fave Massive Aggressive which includes "Wrong Answer", downloadable above with a video for it below. Meanwhile Brutal Truth are celebrating their reunion and return to the stage with a critically lauded LP Evolution Through Revolution, while Phobia are still doing dastardly deeds with 22 Counts of Violence.
Cauldron recently dropped their debut album, Chained To The Nite, on Earache. Dig on "Conjuring The Mass" above. The band is on board for a select set of dates with MW. This past Sunday's Toronto show (12/6) served as the setting for an upcoming live DVD for the Canucks. More on that DVD soon.
On a semi-related note, Dave Witte shared the stage with Black Anvil at the BV sponsored Burnt By The Sun show at Cake Shop recently. Black Anvil has been added to the already STACKED bill of The Hope Conspiracy, Blacklisted, Mother of Mercy, United Nations show at Cake Shop on 1/15. It's one of two (known) shows coming up on the BV roster, the second being Magrudergrind at Cake Shop one week later.
Blacklisted recently surprised us all by releasing No One Deserves To Be Here More Than Me on ZERO notice, a digital and vinyl only release via Deathwish Inc. The album follows their monumental Heavier Than Heaven, Lonelier Than God which dropped in 2008 on the label. Pick the new record up here.
For more on Dave Witte of Municipal Waste and Burnt By The Sun, check out an interview we did with him here.

Municipal Waste and the mighty Phobia are going on tour and teaming up with Brutal Truth and Cauldron for a string of dates along the way. Those include a NYC show at Gramercy Theatre on 12/9. Tickets are on sale.
Phobia, who dropped 22 Random Acts Of Violence via Willowtip last year, are currently working on a video for "Rise Up". Look for that soon.
Meanwhile, Municipal Waste drummer Dave Witte will be in NYC this Friday (10/4) at Cake Shop when he will join Burnt By The Sun in their only scheduled US show brought to you by 1000 Knives and Brooklyn Vegan! Support will come from none other than Tombs, Black Anvil, Bloodhorse, and the recently added Torchbearer. There are no advance tickets... you can only get 'em at the door... unless, of course, you were to win one of TWO FREE PAIRS. For more on how to win those tickets, look at the bottom of this post.
The show is one of two BV sponsored shows for the weekend, the second being Woe, Aluk Todolo, Malkuth, and Castevet at Union Pool on 10/4. Tickets are $8 at the door.
Dave Witte has also been known to join the live incarnation of Melt Banana, though his schedule dictates that he won't be playing with them during their upcoming North American tour.
