Speaking of Kid Millions, one of his other projects, the long-gestating NYC supergroup Soldiers of Fortune, release their new album Early Risers this Friday (11/6). The band also currently includes Brad Truax (Home, Interpol), Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Superwolf), Jesper Eklow of Endless Boogie, Oneida's Barry London and guitarist/producer/gadabout Mike Bones, and the album features guest appearances by Stephen Malkmus, Cass McCombs, Dan Melchoir and more. You can stream both Malkmus' and McCombs contributions -- as well as a Soliders of Fortune themed edition of the psych rock DOODCAST podcast -- below.
Soldiers of Fortune will be celebrating Early Risers at NYC's Max Fish on Wednesday (11/4), playing sets at 8:30 PM and 10 PM. Those shows are FREE. Are any of the album's special guests in town? Flyer for the Max Fish shows below...
Soldiers of Fortune, the NYC indie rock supergroup featuring Brad Truax (Home, Interpol), Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Superwolf) and Kid Millions (Oneida, etc etc etc), have been sporadically active for over a decade. Originally conceived by Truax in 2004 as a "dirty dozen" type outfit who were "never gonna write songs, never gonna practice, never gonna record music, make any product for public consumption or ever hit the road," they did start to play and do most of those other things. Occasionally.
Lineups shifted, and now the group, which currently also features Jesper Eklow of Endless Boogie, Oneida's Barry London and guitarist/studio wiz Mike Bones, are set to release their new album, titled Early Risers, which will be out November 6 via Mexican Summer. The LP also features contributions from Stephen Malkmus, Cass McCombs, Dan Melchior, Ethan Miller (Comets of Fire) and more. You can stream bluesy punk ripper "Nails," which opens the album, below.
You can catch Soldiers of Fortune live in NYC this weekend as they're opening for Moon Duo at both of their shows: Baby's All Right on September 12 (tickets) and Mercury Lounge on September 13 (tickets).
The Greg Dulli-curated ATP NY is this weekend (9/21 - 9/23) and organizers just released the schedule which you can check out below. Music (and comedy on Friday) happens on two stages with films, talks and bingo taking place on the Queen of Hearts boat which is docked just nearby. If you're wondering, Frank Ocean is at 11:45 PM on Friday. Also, Chavez dropped and and have been replaced by JEFF the Brotherhood (Sat. 9/22 7 PM).
Vampire Weekend/Ty Segall/Araabmuzik crowd - Pitchfork Fest 2012
Thank god for the Chicago Transit Authority. Several "cooling stations" (city buses) that provided respite from the onslaught of heat and humidity at the third day of Pitchfork 2012 in Chicago's Union Park (7/15), a weather pattern which replaced the previous days' periodic downpours. The heat, combined with squirt guns & bikini tops, helped create the perfect setting for performances from the sunny tennis-sweater rock of Vampire Weekend and dream pop of the oh-so-aptly named Beach House.
Random thoughts on the day: Personal highlights for me included a stretch of bands that were unfortunately all clustered across the three stages in the afternoon: Milk Music, Iceage, The Men, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees and Chavez. From catching moments of Kendrick Lamar on the Blue Stage, it was proven to me that he's an excellent live performer, a sentiment clearly echoed by Lady Gaga (who looked on during his set). Onohtrix Point Never's material is compelling, but doesnt fit well on an outdoor festival stage. And it's confirmed, this reviewer still detests Vampire Weekend.
Vampire Weekend uber-fans
Pictures from the third and final day of Pitchfork 2012 are below, including pictures of all bands mentioned above, as well as King Krule, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Araabmuzik, and The Field. If you didnt make it to Chicago, maybe you streamed it? If you haven't been keeping up with our coverage, make sure to check out pictures from day one (one set HERE, another HERE) and day two (HERE and HERE) along with video from the festival to complete your desktop Pitchfork Festival experience. Hopefully from an ice cold room.

If the many artists playing the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago this weekend, only a few will be part of the webcast on Pitchfork's Youtube Channel. Check out the schedule (in Chicago time I assume), and the stream itself, below...
ATP Concerts today announce the relocation of this September's New Jersey based I'll Be Your Mirror festival event to Pier 36 in Manhattan, New York.Whether this is related to ATP filing for liquidation or not is not 100% clear (but who really cares). Updated ATP NYC lineup below...
Pier 36 was the intended home for I'll Be Your Mirror beginning in 2013 - but due to unavoidable logistical concerns (along with a lack of available fan accommodations in Asbury Park), ATP has decided to move there for this year's event.
New additions to the festival today include: Philip Glass & Tyondai Braxton, Janeane Garofalo, Lightning Bolt, Lee Ranaldo, Chavez, Kurt Braunohler, Afterhours, Joseph Arthur, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Album Leaf, The Psychic Paramount, Braids, Tall Firs, Blanck Mass, Endless Boogie, Demdike Stare and DJ Jonathan Toubin with more to be added to all three days - see below for more info on the new additions...
Some artists who are unable to play the new location - the following statement comes from Louis CK's management:
"Louis CK who was originally scheduled for the Asbury Park event will not be performing at ATP in Manhattan due to scheduling conflicts. Check louisck.com for info about his tour schedule."
Sharon Van Etten, Reigning Sound and Factory Floor will also not be available to perform. All other previously announced artists will perform as originally scheduled.
"We hope that the new venue will make for an incredible event and open up many other accommodation options to fans who were unable to find rooms in Asbury Park," comments ATP's Barry Hogan. "We sincerely apologise to those inconvenienced by the move and hope that any problems caused may be minimised by the relatively small distance between the two locations. Anyone who is unable to attend due to the move or due to the cancellation of Louis CK can claim a full refund by contacting their ticket agent between now and July 31st."
Pier 36 is a new indoor venue sitting on the edge of the East River between the Manhattan & Williamsburg Bridges - it's outside area boasts glorious views of Brooklyn and the Statue of Liberty.
The Saturday night of this year's festival will be headlined by The Afghan Whigs (who have reunited after a 13 year hiatus) and curated by their frontman Greg Dulli, with ATP curating the Friday and Sunday nights.

Other stellar additions to the day's musical line-up are LIGHTNING BOLT - one of the world's most unmissable live acts, and LEE RANALDO of Sonic Youth. Joining the Friday on the Comedy stage is none other than standup/actress JANEANE GAROFALO, newcomer KURT BRAUNOHLER, with more to be confirmed. Friday tickets cost $60.
Saturday, headlined by THE AFGHAN WHIGS and featuring a stellar list of artists chosen by the Whigs' frontman Greg Dulli, has three new artists. Back in action '90s-era indie rockers Chavez a big headlining show at Bowery Ballroom on Friday night (5/18) with Endless Boogie, one of a select set of dates for the sparsely active band. (Though a new album is said to be in the works.) The show served as a preview for their upcoming stops in London at ATP and at Primvera Sound in Spain. Chavez will also swing through the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago in July.
More pictures and the setlist from Bowery Ballroom are below, along with video of virtually the whole show -- including a new song still the band are still fine-tuning.
Chavez @ ATP NJ (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Chavez, after playing ATP NJ, a small NYC show and Fallon in 2011, will return again at Bowery Ballroom in NYC on 5/18. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday at the same time (2/8).
As previously mentioned, the band are also on board for an ATP in the UK in May, and they're also on the lineup of this year's Primavera Festival in Barcelona. All three dates are listed below...
Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
On Sunday 27th May 2012 Alexandra Palace will host the first show in 13 years from Cincinnati's rock legends THE AFGHAN WHIGS. Formed in 1986, the bands career from then until 2001 saw them release six acclaimed albums highlighted by the classic Gentlemen LP in 1993. Fusing classic rock with grunge-era distortion and a heavy soul influence, Afghan Whigs were one of the most renowned live bands of their time and this long awaited reformation will no doubt be a very special event. The second year of ATP I'll Be Your Mirror in Asbury Park will take place September 21st-23rd...
ATP are also pleased to confirm their return to Asbury Park, New Jersey USA where they will follow last year's debut in that city with a 2012 I'll Be Your Mirror event, the Saturday night of which will be headlined by The Afghan Whigs and curated by the Whigs' frontman Greg Dulli.
As you can see in the poster, tickets will go on sale in January. More of the lineup will also be announced at that time.
All Tomorrow's Parties' I'll Be Your Mirror UK, which just lost Guided By Voices, will host The Afghan Whigs and has moved further into the "unreal" category with additions of Wolves In The Throne Room, Yob, Dirty Three, Floor, Chavez, Balam Acab, The Oh Sees, Yuck, Archers of Loaf, Demdike Stare, and Siskiyou to appearances from Sleep, Melvins, Mogwai, Codeine and Mudhoney.

Tonight's cancelled Jon Spencer Blues Explosion show at Maxwell's has been rescheduled for November 29th. Jon says, ""I am terribly sorry but Russell has fallen ill and been told by his doctor not to play tonight's show. The condition is not serious, and should pass, but right now Russell can not rock'n'roll. Gotta cancel the gig. Sorry for any inconvenience. The date has been rescheduled for Tuesday November 29th. Maxwell's will honor any advance tickets purchased for October 13th. If people needs refunds they can get them wherever they bought the ticket. Ticketfly will send a notice out to on-line buyers."
Speaking of 90's Matador bands, Chavez, who recently played ATP in NJ (and Lit Lounge), appeared on Jimmy Fallon last night (10/12). They played two songs (one on air, one for web). Videos of both, along with more pictures from their ATP set (setlist included), below...

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
For those who experienced and loved ATP America's festivals in Monticello, NY, it may have been difficult to imagine how a change of location, from upstate New York to the New Jersey shore, could possibly improve and enhance the unique and uncanny event that it was known to be. Well, it has.---
Friday afternoon the fans, followers and leaders of All Tomorrow's Parties arrived in Asbury Park, NY, a town that only five or so years ago was known for its high crime rate and abandoned boardwalk. It's likely that this decadence, however, is precisely what draws the festival and its goers to a new spot on the map, a mere hour south of New York City. Although the rain dampened the ground here at Asbury Park, it did not extinguish the ATP fire that was sparked on stage by Chavez, Reggie Watts with his knee-slapping musical spoofs (ironically fit for a music festival), event regulars Shellac, Hannibal Buress and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, The Album Leaf and the absorbing Jeff Mangum (of Neutral Milk Hotel). -[Dossier]
Here is a full set of pictures I'll Be Your Mirror Friday. They continue below...
All Tomorrow's Parties returns to the USA this September in the new location of Asbury Park, N.J. bringing an I'll Be Your Mirror event to the iconic waterfront. For the inaugural U.S. I'll Be Your Mirror, Portishead will curate and headline their firrst East Coast shows since 1998 on the Saturday & Sunday.Say that all three times fast. All three day pass options are still on sale. More details on all ATP ticket options are below.
As well as Day Tickets, ATP have to date been selling two types of weekend pass - "Three Day Jeff Mangum" passes that include Jeff Mangum's Friday show and guarantee access to one of the Portishead shows (as well as everything else at the festival) and "Three Day Portishead" passes that do not give access to Jeff's Friday show but give guaranteed access to both Portishead shows as well as the rest of the festival. Today we announce a third type of weekend pass...
Portishead have invited Jeff to play an extra show on the Sunday night of the festival. Therefore this week we release new "Three Day Jeff Mangum Sunday Passes" - these give access to all three days of the festival to passholders who will see Jeff Mangum on the Sunday night and are guaranteed to see one of the two Portishead shows. The original Three Day passes for the event are now called "Three Day Jeff Mangum Friday Passes."
That means Jeff is playing Asbury Park three times, twice during the actual festival (see above), and, as you know, once on Monday (10/3) at Paramount Theatre (the day after ATP and not actually part of the fest itself). The Monday show has been sold out for a while now, but ATP are releasing a few more tickets for it. "To buy email firstname.lastname@example.org with JEFF MONDAY TICKETS in subject line, and tell us how many tickets you want. We will respond as soon as possible. Payments must be made by Paypal." A Hawk and a Hacksaw (ft. Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeremy Barnes) open the show.
ATP NJ has a few other lineup additions including Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 (they first reunited to play the Animal Collective ATP that recently happened in the UK), avant guitar hero Marc Ribot, avant sax hero Colin Stetson, avant comedian Reggie Watts, and others. Also: "Today we are also very pleased to announce that in conjunction with The Jonathan Levine Gallery, renowned artist SHEPARD FAIREY (who has created the art for this event and will also DJ) will be presenting an exhibition of his art over the weekend entitled Revolutions: The Album Cover Art of Shepard Fairey. More details of the exhibition will be confirmed soon."
The updated lineup is below, along with updated Jeff Mangum tour dates (he added a few other shows recently too)...
Updated ATP flyer
"Can we assume they'll be added to ATP, which starts a few days after the Bklyn date?," asked a commenter in the comments of our post announcing the Swans show at Music Hall of Williamsburg, and that commenter was dead on.
ATP NJ (aka "Ill Be Your Mirror") has updated its previously announced lineup to include Swans, Peanut Butter Wolf (who will be DJing), Battles, Deerhoof, Jim Thirwell's Manorexia, and Oneida (who will again perform in Ocropolis formation, like in 2009) "ONEIDA PRESENTS THE OCROPOLIS III which will take place at the Asbury Lanes Bowling Alley - the band will perform continuously throughout the day, sometimes with guests from the rich array of musicians also performing in the festival, sometimes alone and mostly improvised."
Though 3-day passes for the Asbury Park Fest, which include your only shot at seeing Jeff Mangum, are sold out (now called the Jeff Mangum Three Day Pass), tickets are still available in multiple incarnations for the three day celebration, including a new "Portishead Three Day Pass" which allows "passholders to see everything else from Friday-Sunday as well as giving priority access with the day pass holders to BOTH Portishead shows on Saturday and Sunday" (the pass doesn't include entry into Jeff Mangum). The "Portishead Three Day Pass" will go on sale at 10AM EST Thursday (4/21) and individual day passes are currently on sale. The versions of the 3-day pass that are sold out only guarantee you one night of Portishead. "Existing Day ticketholders or Jeff Mangum Three Day pass holders who wish to switch to a Portishead Three Day Pass should contact ATP via email@example.com before May 30th."
The current lineup is below.
Shepard Fairey is also DJing the event on Sunday
ATP Asbury Park ("I'll Be Your Mirror") has released the second wave of artist announcements including many of Portishead's choices for the bill! We already knew about Jeff Mangum, Bonnie Prince Billy, Shellac, Chavez and more. New additions include, not surprisingly, Portishead-related acts Anika and Beak> (and this time Anika will be performing live and not just DJing). There's also now a rare reunion of The Pop Group, an Ultramagnetic MC's reunion (WITH Kool Keith), Silver Qluster (Simeon of Silver Apples and Hans-Joachim Roedelius of Cluster/Harmonia), Thee Siliver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, Mogwai, Earth, The Horrors and more. The full list is below.
More details, a bigger Shepard Fairey-designed poster, and the full schedule below...
This was actually posted by ATP on Friday, but probably still all true:
The Jeff Mangum show at the Paramount Theatre is now sold out.Remember, only people with 3 day passes get to go to the Mangum show on Friday, and only people with separate Mangum Monday tickets get to go to Mangum on Monday. 3 day pass holders need to choose between seeing Portishead either Saturday or Sunday (though depending on capacity I suppose some lucky people will get to go to both). There doesn't seem to be a way to stop people who buy Saturday and Sunday day passes from seeing Portishead both nights though. Tickets went on sale Friday morning.
Three Day passes and Day passes are selling fast and the ticket sites are going slow due to the number of visitors so if it doesn't work first time please be patient and try again, or try phoning! Thanks for your understanding. On Seetickets you will know your order was successful when you get email confirmation.
Here are the correct ticket links to use for today's on-sale at 9am EST. Tickets will be limited to 4 per order per ticket type so please bear this in mind and if you need more than that try to get a friend to do a separate order.
Please note 3 day passes are only on Seetickets...
Three Day Passes - SEETICKETS

Updated I'll Be Your Mirror USA lineup (they added a couple names since the initial announcement) below....
For those of you who were wondering if ATP New York was returning to the kitschy resort that is Kutschers, the bad news is that it won't. The good news? All Tomorrow's Parties is instead headed to one of the kitschiest towns in New Jersey this fall, and "American I'll Be Your Mirror" will begin its inaugural year with a BANG!
All Tomorrow's Parties returns to the USA this September in the new location of Asbury Park, N.J. bringing an I'll Be Your Mirror event to the iconic Asbury Park waterfront. For the inaugural American I'll Be Your Mirror, Portishead will curate and headline their first East Coast shows since 1998 on the Saturday and Sunday!I'll Be Your Mirror will take place from Sept 30 - Oct 2, 2011. Jeff Mangum will ALSO perform a separate show on Monday, Oct 3rd at Paramount Theater. 3 DAY PASSES, DAY PASSES AND JEFF MANGUM (Monday) TICKETS GO ON SALE THIS FRIDAY AT 9AM EST FROM SEETICKETS & TICKETMASTER via www.atpfestival.com.
ATP, who are curating on the Friday are also very excited to be able to present Jeff Mangum who on the Friday night will perform his first large public show of Neutral Milk Hotel songs in over a decade.... Please note, as Jeff has chosen to play in the stunning, but smaller Paramount theatre only people who buy 3 day festival passes get access to this show on Friday night.
Also playing on the Friday are Chavez, Shellac, Cults and The Album Leaf, with a headliner and some comedians to be confirmed. The rest of the line-ups for the Saturday and Sunday will be announced in the near future.
I'll Be Your Mirror is a new series of artist curated music, film and art events. Acting as sister events to the ATP Festivals, which take place in holiday resorts, I'll Be Your Mirror retains the curatorial and multiple band and film concept, but will take place in cities worldwide. The events are named after the b-side to The Velvet Underground's original All Tomorrow's Parties 7" single, released in 1966.
Everyone who came to our three events at Kutshers knows how special the place was and how lucky they were to have been a part of our events there and while we are sad to not be returning, we are excited to be moving to the iconic Asbury Park. The Convention Hall has seen the likes of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones grace its stage and the Paramount Theatre has welcomed stars such as Tony Bennett who often insists on playing a song with all the electrics turned off to demonstrate the amazing acoustics of the room.
We will be transporting the whole ATP experience over to this new location on the beach at Asbury Park, with the main shows taking place at the Convention Hall and Paramount Theatre, as well as the nearby Asbury Lanes and the Berkeley hotel, which the man in black, Johnny Cash himself once lived at. We think it will make a stunning successor to Kutshers.
As well as the live music line-up of over 30 acts across the weekend, Friday will feature a Comedy stage, and we're very pleased to announce that our friends at Criterion will return again to run the Cinema across the weekend. All three days will also feature DJs and other activities to be confirmed in the months ahead - we'll also be bringing back some of our popular food vendors including the much loved Asia Dogs, and much, much more. Performances all take place indoors, so you have no need to fear about the weather!
Most exciting news ever?
BBG, an ATP NY veteran, in a moment of excitement adds:
This announcement is one big "holy shit" on many levels.Confused by point #6? Well, "Limited 3 Day Passes are available at $249 - these include access to the Jeff Mangum Friday show and the choice of being guaranteed to see Portishead on Saturday or Sunday." More details (including ticket and transportation options) below:
1) Hello Asbury Park, NJ!
2) One of the best things about ATP New York was the "music camp" atmosphere at Kutshers. How will Berkeley Hotel fare?
3) Neutral Milk Hotel!!!
5) Neutral Milk Hotel again!
6) Portishead again, but maybe not?

Chavez @ Parkside Lounge, 9/29/2010 (photo by Jen Barzyk)
Thank you to the helpful people who pointed out that Chavez were playing a secret show at Parkside Lounge in NYC last night (9/29). It was a warm up for the (much more expensive) Matador 21 Festival happening in Las Vegas this weekend.
If you missed it, and you can't make it to Vegas, don't fret. The Vegas sets by Chavez, along with Pavement, Sonic Youth, Belle & Sebastian, Guided By Voices, Liz Phair and others will be streamed live (and on repeat) courtesy of MySpace Music at myspace.com/matador21.
The full stream schedule, Chavez's NYC setlist, and a few more pictures (thanks Jen and Quilty) including one of the setlist (which replaces parts of song names with "Marsh"), below...
Matador's 21st birthday fest will be happening in Las Vegas October 1st-3rd. For it, they've pulled the cream of the indie-rock crop. Previously speculated headliners Belle & Sebastian and Pavement will be there - on top of that, Guided By Voices will be reuniting to play, "in the band's "classic '93-'96 lineup!" The most recent show for GBV was New Year's Eve 2004/05.
In addition to those three, the lineup includes Sonic Youth, Spoon, Yo La Tengo, Cat Power, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, New Pornographers, Superchunk, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Guitar Wolf (who also play NY), Chavez, Girls, Fucked Up, Harlem, Cold Cave, Shearwater, Kurt Vile and Jeffrey Joe Jenson. More will be annonuced July 5th.
A flyer is below...
CHAVEZ @ WARSAW, BROOKLYN, NY | DEC 16, 2006 (CRED)
The reunited Chavez played Warsaw in Brooklyn back on December 16th. Someone taped the show and posted the whole thing for download. Someone else posted some YouTube videos, and another person took some pictures.
I didn't make it to the show. How was it?
Both of the above MP3s come from the recently-released "super-deluxe re-mastered" Chavez compilation that includes, among other things, "two CDs plus DVD, two 28-page books, and the two original studio albums". Pitchfork recently gave it a 9.4. To promote said compilation, Chavez are getting back together to play some shows. These to be exact:
If you're not familiar with this indie rock band who were "active in the New York club scene in the mid to late '90s", you probably at least heard of their frontman Matt Sweeney from such projects as Billy Corgan's Zwan and Bonnie Prince Billy's Superwolf.
