Outer Spaces

Outer Spaces, the current band of Cara Beth Satalino (ex-Witches), are currently on a tour that wraps up this weekend, hitting Brooklyn tonight and Boston on Saturday.

Tonight's Brooklyn show is at Palisades (3/13) with SoftSpot, Brooklyn indie rockers Giant Peach, and new Big Ups side project Thelonius Junk. That show's $7 at the door.

Outer Spaces' most recent release is the Garbage Beach EP, which came out on Salinas Records this past October, following last year's Creature of Nature EP and "I Was Divided" single. The new EP features Ben Salie from Pinecones on drums, and Cara's past collaborator (and Dan Deacon and Future Islands producer) Chester Endersby Gwazda on bass and keys. Like her past work (or Waxahatchee, Hop Along, Cayetana, etc) it mixes folk, pop, indie rock and punk into its own little subgenre, and probably the best example of this is the standout closing track, "Gun Song." With just an acoustic guitar and Cara's voice, that song could sound like right out of the mid-2000s folk revival, but instead she gives it an arrangement that sounds more fit for sweaty DIY shows than campfire singalongs.

Stream the EP in full below...

Outer Spaces

Athens/Baltimore indie rockers Outer Spaces (not to be confused with Outer Space) are planning a tour for this spring (most of which is TBA), and that tour expects them in NYC this April, but you can see them here much sooner at TONIGHT's (2/5) Death by Audio show with poppy shoegazers Field Mouse, folk pop singer/songwriter Gregory and the Hawk and lo-fi duo Laughing Fingers. $7 at the door. Flyer below.

Outer Spaces evolved out of singer Cara Beth Satalino's solo project, and sees her joined by a revolving lineup that includes Chester Endersby Gwazda (who you may know as the producer of several Dan Deacon and Future Islands albums). Cara used to front the punky indie rock band Witches who had releases on Salinas Records (PS Eliot, Swearin') and Bakery Outlet Records. Following those releases, she put out an EP under her own name, The Good Ones on the same two labels. Not unlike Katie Crutchfield of Cara's former labelmates PS Eliot initially did with Waxahatchee (who Cara has played with), she used the solo project as an opportunity to ditch the distortion-driven songs of her former project in favor of bare, folkier songwriting.

She continued that trend on her February 2013 EP as Outer Spaces, Creature of Nature, but added the full band to expand their sound for their May 2013 7" which came out as part of the Matador Records singles series. The resulting songs, "I Was Divided" and "Eternally Fifteen," are two of the band's best tracks to date, pulling from folk, punk, and indie rock, but never really falling into any of the three.

They're planning on releasing their first full length this year, so stay tuned for more on that. Meanwhile, stream the Matador 7" and the Creature of Nature EP, along with the mostly tentative list of tour dates, below...

Dan Deacon @ MHOW, 11/16/2012 (more by David Andrako)
Dan Deacon

Dan Deacon made his national network television debut last night (12/13) on Jimmy Kimmel Live, playing "True Thrush" from his most recent album, America. Like at his live shows, Dan and his band played mostly in darkness and incorporates an iPhone app into his crowd-participation antics. You can experience a little of that symbiosis in the video from the Kimmel performance which has an interactive element, which you can watch below. Dan's North American tour wraps up this weekend in Florida and he'll head to Europe in February for a short tour there. All dates are listed below.

Meanwhile, Dan gave us his Top 10 LPs of 2012 which includes Baltimore pals Ed Schrader's Music Beat, Beach House, Dope Body, Chester Endersby Gwazda (who Dan brought on tour with him this year) and Horse Lords. You can check it out below, along with a list of tour dates and the 'Kimmel' video.

Dan Deacon @ Bowery Ballroom - 11/16/12
Dan Deacon Ensemble
Dan Deacon Ensemble

Dan Deacon brought his ongoing tour to NYC last week for shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg (11/14) and Bowery Ballroom (11/16). Dan, who is from Long Island, turned both shows into benefit shows to aid relief efforts from Hurricane Sandy.

Dan has been touring behind his new album, America, and played much of the material from that release at his NYC shows, where he also brought his usual dance-floor-commanding antics. We caught the Bowery Ballroom show, and pictures from that show (including openers Height with Friends, Chester Endersby Gwazda, and Alan Resnick) are in this post.

More below.

It's since been revealed that he'll also play November 16 at Bowery Ballroom. Both of those shows are part of the leg of the tour which sees the Dan Deacon Ensemble will be performing with support from Height With Friends, Chester Endersby Gwazda, and Alan Resnick. Tickets for both NYC shows go on sale Friday (7/20) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (7/18) at noon.

We recently mentioned on BV Austin that Dan Deacon recorded a version of "Call Me Maybe" dubbed "Call Me Maybe Acapella 147 Times Exponentially Layered." You can purchase it for $1 on bandcamp or stream it below along with an updated list of dates.

Dan Deacon at Pier 84 last week (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Dan Deacon

You may have noticed that about a month ago, Music Hall of Williamsburg's website posted a Dan Deacon show, but quickly removed it. That was presumably not to compete with the free River Rocks show on Pier 84 that Dan just played because now that that's over, it's been re-announced that Dan Deacon will play Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 14.

The show is part of his previously discussed tour where the Dan Deacon Ensemble will be performing with support from Height With Friends, Chester Endersby Gwazda, and Alan Resnick. Tickets for the Brooklyn show go on sale Friday (7/20) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (7/18) at noon.

A list of updated dates and streams of "Lots" and "True Thrush" from Dan Deacon's upcoming America LP are below...
