The Domino-signed band Chief are on tour and headlining Bowery Ballroom this evening, 12/7. Tickets are still on sale, and I have a few pairs you can win. Details, all dates and Chief's new video for "The Minute I Saw it", are below.

Opening the Bowery Ballroom show are The Dig and Oxford, Mississippi's Young Buffalo. If you know one thing about Oxford, it might be that the city is home to Fat Possum Records, and if you know anything about Fat Possum, then you know that since the label recently signed the young Oxford-local band, Young Buffalo must be at least worth a listen (self-titled LP due out in early 2011). You can listen below. Their tour dates are down there too.

Speaking of young bands, Young Man has a new single out today for "Strangers". And with that single came a new video for "Up So Fast" which you can watch below.

Canada's Young Galaxy will release their third LP, Shapeshifting, via Paperbag Records on February 8th. Grab two songs off that new album, above for free and now.

Young Prisms recently toured and played some NYC shows, and one in Boston that they were late to, partially because their tourmates Weekend had some car trouble, and partially because they were taping an Into The Woods session. Watch that below. Young Prisms are going back on tour in January. They don't list another NYC show yet, but they are playing Philly on 1/31. All dates are down there too.

Eli Paperboy Reed on Governors Island

"Well, from what Alastair, Ken and Christopher say, it looks as if music fans (and maybe bicyclists) have been the luckiest Governors Island visitors so far, both for the quality and sheer number of events.

The permit process must be deterring amateur concert promoters -- thank goodness -- and yes, as a tourist attraction, a pop concert feels like a more festive destination than a theater marathon. (The party can start on the boat.) Pop concerts are also used to building their own infrastructures, and audiences are prepared for outdoor, standing-room shows. And of course, unlike the situation for the visual arts or dance, there is immediate big money to be made from concert tickets for Grizzly Bear or 50 Cent. Corporate sponsors have been paying to produce many of the better events.

Summer in New York City is a riotously competitive time for outdoor concerts -- Summerstage, Celebrate Brooklyn, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, P.S. 1, Jelly NYC and other series are all presenting first-rate shows, many of them free and more convenient at exit time -- but Governors Island has held its own this year." That quote is from a series of stories the NY Times is doing on Governors Island.

The pictures in this post are a second set from Sunday night's Converse-sponsored free show (the first set is HERE). Sunday's show was also the last (for now) oo the "Gone to Governors" series (there are more pay shows coming up though). It's been a fun summer of ferry rides and scenic views on "The Beach".

Dr. Dog's free Beach at Governors Island show is happening on Sunday, August 15th. The openers for that show will be Eli "Paperboy" Reed & The True Loves and recent Domino signees Chief.

That gig is in advance of Dr Dog's October/November North American tour with Brooklyn's Here We Go Magic. No NYC date for that as of yet, but its currently scheduled shows are below. Here We Go Magic, however, does have a New York show, booked for August 11th Coco 66.

Dr. Dog singer-guitar player Scott McMicken has a solo show coming up at the Rock Shop on Sunday, August 22nd. Tickets are on sale. That's actually one of three solo dates he has planned with Springs, which is the musical name of Brooklyn's Mike Visser. Mike recorded a song with Scott as part of the Shaking Through Series, and a video of that is below. Springs also has a show with Sharon Van Etten at the Bushwick Starr on August 7th and a July 30th show at Arlene's Grocery.

Also coming up are some shows by Dr. Dog-related band Juston Stens & the Get Real Gang, the project of Dr. Dog's ex-drummer Juston Stens. Juston plays with TV Torso and Slow Animal at Death By Audio on August 25th, and then with ARMS and TV Torso at Mercury Lounge on Friday, August 27th. Tickets are on sale for the Manhattan show.

Morning Benders

Wild Nothing opened the night with a blistering set of tunes that had me groovin'....

Freelance Whales were up next, and I had high hopes for their set....The band was good, but not great...

The Morning Benders played an incredible set the last time I saw them at The Music Hall Of Williamsburg. I didn't think they would be able to top it, but the did. With the devastatingly beautiful backdrop of NYC accompanying them, there was nothing but good vibes floating all round their performances...

...the band played a great cover of the Fleetwood Mac classic "Dreams". The guys nailed it down so well that one wouldn't be at fault for mistaking the song as a morning benders original.

That wasn't the only cover that they did. The band also covered Joy Division's "Ceremony", which Chris said was one of his favorite songs....The set ended with the always incredible "Excuses" which brought a huge singalong from the crowd... [We All Want Someone]

The second of the summer's free Converse Presents: Gone to Governors shows on Governors Island happened on Saturday night (June 19th) with sets by the Morning Benders, Freelance Whales and Wild Nothing. Like the first (Yeasayer) show, the space filled up, this time about an hour before the music (though they let some more people on to ferrys around 8:30, after the beer fest that was also happening on the island emptied out).

The next show in the Gone to Governors series happens on July 3rd with Portugal. The Man and Alberta Cross (that's a day before She & Him play a July 4th free show on the island with Oakley Hall).

For the Dr. Dog show now happening on Sunday, August 15th (note the date change), atmospheric indie-folk-rock Chief have been added to one of the opening slots.

The MoMA Party in the Garden benefit with Karen O and Nick Zinner is tonight (5/25), and the Anthology Film Archives benefit with Lou Reed, Sonic Youth and Kenneth Anger's band Technicolor Skull was the week before (5/19).

Tomorrow (Wednesday, May 26th), there's the spring benefit for the Kitchen, a nonprofit performance and music space in Chelsea, that will honor David Byrne. The event, which includes dinner, drinks, etc. at Capitale (130 Bowery), will also feature performances by Dirty Projectors, Doveman, Nico Muhly, and St. Vincent. Tickets for that would have run you $500 a piece, if they weren't already sold out. Byrne isn't listed as playing at the event, though he has performed with both Dirty Projectors and St. Vincent in the past.

You can still nab a ticket ($75) to the somewhat less-exciting after-party with DJ Scott Campbell and music from California county-tinged folk-pop band Chief.

While in town, Chief, who just signed to Domino Records (and who live back in California now that they've graduated from NYU) are also playing a show at Mercury Lounge on June 2nd with She Keeps Bees and Caveman. Tickets are on sale. They'll also be at Union Pool on June 5th...

"California 4-piece Chief, comprised of early 20-somethings Evan Koga, brothers Danny and Michael Fujikawa and Mike Moonves, will release their stunning debut album Modern Rituals on August 17, 2010. The newest signing to Domino Records, Chief has already garnered a fervent following in NYC and LA as well as early radio support from KEXP, BBC Radio 6 Music and Zane Lowe's influential Radio 1 show. The band will set out on a run of select U.S. tour dates that begins this Friday, May 28th, but first they are proud to offer their lead single "Night & Day" as a free download" [Domino Records]

Dirty Projectors' other upcoming shows include a headlining gig at Terminal 5 on September 11th which Owen Pallett is now opening. All dates below.

St. Vincent has a headlining show coming up at Summerstage and she'll sing with Ben Gibbard at the June 8th Simon & Garfunkel-themed Summerstage benefit. You can also catch her playing DJ at Brooklyn Bowl tonight (5/25).

Speaking of David Byrne, he's been busy as usual. He's suing Florida governor Charlie Crist. And his Here Lies Love project came out in April. (Eerily, that record, about Philippine first lady and political figure Imelda Marcos, corresponded with the political success of Imelda and the Marcos family in a May election.)

There's a new book on Byrne & Talking Heads called Song and Circumstance: The Work of David Byrne from Talking Heads to the Present, which sports a cover photo by BV photographer Chris La Putt (taken at Byrne's Radio City show in 2009). Congrats Chris!
