Three Lobed Recordings is releasing a five-album set this week called Parallelogram. Each album is a different split between two artists, and "each LP will be housed within its own letter pressed 'matchbook' bearing new original artwork by Casey Burns and printed by Dexterity Press." Each one is a pretty amazing pairing. They've got modern-day folk singer Hiss Golden Messenger on one with '60s-era folk vet Michael Chapman, avant-folk artist Six Organs of Admittance on one with American Primitivism guitarist William Tyler, the ever-evolving Kurt Vile with frequent collaborator Steve Gunn, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore & John Moloney (aka Caught On Tape) with the Alan Bishop/Bill Orcutt/Chris Corsano trio, and space rockers Bardo Pond with long-running indie staples Yo La Tengo.
The series has a mix of new original music from the artists, and covers. Hiss Golden Messenger takes on JJ Cale's "Wish I Had Not Said That," Elephant Micah's "Still Life Blues," and David Wiffen's "Smoke Rings."
Kurt Vile and Steve Gunn's split has each artist playing on each other's songs, which actually marks the first time they've collaborated in studio (despite playing live together for so long). KV takes on Randy Newman's "Pretty Boy" and John Prine's "Way Back When," and offers up a solo banjo version of his song "Red Apples" (now called "Red Apples For Tom Scharpling") from his 2009 God Is Saying This To You... album. Steve Gunn's half includes a cover of Nico's "60/40."
Thurston Moore and John Moloney take "Ono Soul" from Thurston's 1995 album Psychic Hearts, and turn it into a 19+ minute noise exploration for their sole contribution to the series. The Bishop/Orcutt/Corsano songs were recorded at one of the trio's only two performances, and include a wacked-out cover of Cream's "Politician."

Rangda, the trio of Six Organs of Admittance main man Ben Chasny, Sun City Girls' Sir Richard Bishop, and drummer Chris Corsano (who's worked with Bjork, Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore and others), have so far released two albums on Drag City -- 2010's False Flag and 2012's Formerly Extinct -- and they're now working on LP #3, though there aren't many details on that.
We do know, however, that like they did in 2012, they'll play two shows this weekend before holing up in Black Dirt Studio to record the new LP. The first of those happens in NYC TONIGHT (1/9) at Baby's All Right with support from Samara Lubelski (who was in Thurston Moore's band Chelsea Light Moving) performing as a duo with Zaimph's Marcia Bassett. Tickets are on sale now.
That's the early show at Baby's (7 PM start) happening before the Hailu Mergia show at 9:30. Then on Saturday (1/10), Rangda do it again in Florence, MA with Tarp and Moonfed (members of Black Sky).
Later this year, Six Organs of Admittance will go on their own tour in support of their new album Hexadic (due 2/17 via Drag City), hitting NYC on April 30 at Baby's All Right. Tickets for that show are still available.

Wolf Eyes / Gunplay / Tim Hecker @ Knockdown Center - 5/16/14
"Tomorrow i will see Gunplay and Napalm Death in the same show, i don't rly even know what that means," wrote one fan on Twitter. Somewhere, the shadowy curating hand at Red Bull Music Academy smiled. Mission accomplished.
Hardcore Activity in Progress was one of the latest monster showcases put on by RBMA, working under the record store geek conceit of musical extremes. Kicking off last Friday, May 16 at the Knockdown Center, the show playfully yo-yoed the crowds' expectations, covering more miles than the previous Drone Activity in Progress held last year. The fest swung from dynamic end points; quiet to loud, soothing to loud, measured to holy crap this is loud (they luckily were giving out earplugs that they warned everyone to wear). Sure, there were times when the twine was twisted: For one, OCD category adherents might've been flummoxed by the lack of objective hardcore on the bill, beyond the prior incarnation of Bastard Noise. ("This is our hardcore," said the website, using the same argumentative logic as, "Well, it's how I feel. . .") Then, the proximity of the stages created a timbre pile-up that would've excited the spirits of Luigi Russolo and John Cage, but seemed to irritate critics. The NY Times review reads:
the sound at the Knockdown Center was basically garbage: echoey, booming, diffuse, nonsensical. It also wasn't great at last year's Red Bull Music Academy event in the same space, "Drone Activity in Progress," but that concert had a few other things going for it -- the novelty of the just-opened space, and the music itself, drone and noise and power-electronics, either carefully conceived or more energetic. Anyway, on Friday, some good sets -- by the Thing and Ms. Lee, for instance -- were impeded by poor acoustics or competing rackets coming from nearby. And some bad sets were made worse.Add in the inclement weather and the venue's libation ban (the same venue as the recent M.I.A. & A$AP Ferg show), and one could see the bipolar goal as needlessly frustrating.
But, it's hard to damn ambition. The fact one could walk a few steps from the drone terror of the ex-Khanate pain-incarnate that's Gnaw to solo cellist deconstructionist Okkyung Lee was kind of neat in the same way an eclectic mixtape is neat. Granted, in the 21st century, with all of recorded history at our fingertips, the ping-pong effect is lessened due to everyone's general familiarity with other styles. The genre islands have been subsumed by the sea change. But, still, one appreciated the otherworldly jolt every so often: Hey, there's Lubomyr Melnyk wielding his complex continuous music theory on piano, creating a near-literal river of notes. And there's grindfathers Napalm Death destroying unprotected eardrums with unhinged aggression. In fact, the latter's classic "You Suffer" kind of summed it all up: You suffer/ But why? Those that took the show as some greater statement about contemporary art were missing the point. Modern classic and harsh noise rap! Drone and jazz! Gunplay and Tim Hecker! GUNPLAY AND TIM HECKER!
Those were the moments that made it worthwhile.

NYC noise cellist Okkyung Lee is about to kick off a residency at East Village avant-garde artists' space The Stone, which runs from May 6 to 11. She's got some excellent guests appearing throughout the residency, including art pop veteran Laurie Anderson (5/6), no wave veteran Ikue Mori with jazz pianist Vijay Iyer (5/7), Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon (5/7), Norwegian art pop musician Jenny Hval (5/9), Wake Up Awesome collaborator C. Spencer Yeh (5/10), two Kim Gordon/Thurston Moore collaborators -- Bill Nace & Chris Corsano (5/10), and more. Full schedule below.
Okkyung Lee also takes part in Hardcore Activity in Progress (part of Red Bull Music Academy) which happens on May 16 at the Knockdown Center in Queens with Napalm Death, Wolf Eyes, Gunplay, Bastard Noise, The Thing, clipping., Yoshiko Ohara, Gnaw and more. Tickets for that are still available.

As mentioned, Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band, a newish project from TVotR's Tunde Adebimpe and drummer Ryan Sawyer, will release their debut EP on October 1 via their own ZNA Records. You can stream a track from that below.
In celebration of the EP, the group have an October residency at Brooklyn's Union Pool, playing every Sunday of the month. It's where the band made their live debut when they opened for Yeah Yeah Yeah's Hurricane Sandy relief benefit last December. They've also invited friends to open:

The Hopscotch festival in Raleigh, North Carolina will celebrate its third year from Sept. 6-8, 2012 in downtown Raleigh, with 175 bands in 15 venues. The initial lineup, released today, runs the gamut from traditional indie favorites to punk to noise music to hip hop to noisy black metal and all stops in between, featuring performances from Built to Spill, sunn 0))), The Roots, The Jesus & Mary Chain (who played SXSW), Liars (who have a show coming up at Webster Hall), Baroness, Deerhoof, Death Grips (who play NYC soon and have new material on the way), Danny Brown (who was at Coachella and plays Prospect Park soon), Pallbearer (who play an exclusive East Coast Show soon), Screaming Females (who recently played NYC and are on tour now), Thee Oh Sees, The Spits (who just played NYC twice), Tenement, The Mountain Goats (two sets, one of which will be an all metal-covers set!) and so many more.

"LOUDER!" "TURN IT UP!"
After leaving Melvins at Webster Hall on Friday (May 15, 2009), where the thundering basstones of Trevor Dunn were vibrating my chest, it was a little odd that the sounds emanating from British power electronic terrorists Grey Wolves over at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, were comparatively silent. As their No Fun Fest set went on, the volume would increase from "mildly harsh" to "razor sharp", but one thing stayed constant: the squalls of caustic harsh noise squelching out of the PA.
Sound fun? It was. Behind that backdrop, Grey Wolves spewed caustic lyrics about hate, terrorism, and a desire to "fuck the pain way", and not like Peaches sang playfully in 2000. In between the confrontational lyrics, the vocalist sneered and grabbed his crotch, but not in the Jackson Family manner, the kind that would make your mother call the po-po. Intense, immense, a tad shocking, and completely enjoyable.
After Grey Wolves, my journey into the Melvins past would continue with their ex-bassist Joe Preston and his solo project Thrones. With a looping pedal, drum machine, and some sort of vocal harmonizer (anyone know?), Joe churned out compelling and doomy rhythms, leads, and everything in between, making for a fascinating one man show. I had originally thought that the Wolves In the Throne Room/A Storm Of Light show coming up with Krallice at The Studio @ Webster (5/26, tickets here) was the definite winner of the NYC shows on that tour, but after seeing Thrones on Friday, its a toss up... unless I make it to Coco66 on 5/21 to catch him with Blues Control, then I may go see him again with WITTR at Europa on 5/22 (tickets here)
The last act for the evening was Bastard Noise, the noise project of fallen powerviolence legends Man Is The Bastard. I caught a few songs from the noise-terrorists, enough to see Eric Wood thrashing around like a madman and require another listen from their awesome new album Rogue Astronaut.
