Broken Social Scene @ SXSW (more by Bryan Bruchman)

Aquarian Weekly: Where does Broken Social Scene go from here? Are there any cinematic soundtracks on the horizon? This weekend boasts an insane amount of awesome shows: Broken Social Scene, Beach House, The Clean, Caribou, Local Natives, Jonsi... of course they're all sold out. So I'm gonna try and suggest things to do that the more lackadaisical music fan can still get into. It's broken up by day...Brendan Canning: We've got a lot of cinematic music in the can. There's a few movies we're working on while we do a month of touring and festivals to promote the record. We're involved with Daydream Nation, It's Kind Of A Funny Story, and This Movie Is Broken, which mixes Broken Social Scene live concert footage with a plot line that's half fiction thrown in. Now's the time to work hard, stay on top of things, and know this is our moment.

"Chris Glover" (in quotes per his request) is mysterious. Seemingly out of nowhere, the guy is signed to Interscope Records. The only Internet proof of his existence before now is a guest spot on a Girl Talk album that came out last year. After discovering him via a record company related e-mail last week, I went to see him Tuesday night, March 15th, 2005, at Sin-e in NYC.
His live show was a lot rawer than the well produced (potential radio) tracks you can hear on his player. I have trouble believing his band members have known him very long. Perhaps they were hired by Interscope to record the album and play some shows. Feel free to comment if you know more about it.
He's full of wise cracks and strange stories that he tells in this comedic-white-rapper sort of under-his-breath way. The title of his forthcoming album, "Hell isn't even that Funny is his reaction to people saying "that's funny as hell." Hell's not funny he explained, though pointing out he doesn't believe in Heaven or Hell.
If you like his songs, you shouldn't be disappointed with the live show (which you have the chance to catch the next two Tuesday nights at Sin-E). His voice sounds so much like the songs, I wondered if he was lip syncing for a second. Overall enjoyable, but musically, no comparison to a band like Doves who I ran to catch right after seeing Chris.
I don't know much about Chris Glover yet, but I know I'm hooked on this media player that lets you stream a couple of songs.
Chris's debut CD, Hell Isn’t Even That Funny, comes out "late April/early May" on Interscope Records. In March (starting tomorrow), you can get some Glover love from iTunes:
March 15 - Discovery Download (iTunes) will give away downloads to “Stand On Your Seat” for free
March 22 - 4-song EP exclusively available on iTunes. The EP tracks include “Stand On Your Seat”, “Pinocchio”, “Tear Stains, and “Black Lodge” for only $1.98.
March 29 - "Stand On Your Seat" video will premiere on iTunes front page, Launch.com
New Yorkers can catch Chris every Tuesday @ 8pm this month at Sin-e. The dates left are March 15, March 22, and March 29.
