National Christmas Tree
The countdown is on until the lighting of the National Christmas tree!
My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James will have the honor of performing at the 2010 National Christmas Tree Lighting. The event will be held [today] December 9th at 5pm EST on the Ellipse at President's Park in Washington DC. He will be joined by fellow performers B.B. King, Sara Bareilles, Maroon 5, and Jackie Evancho, and the evening will be hosted by rapper/actor Common. You can watch the ceremony live at www.thenationaltree.org or on public television throughout December. My Morning Jacket is currently recording a new full-length album, which will be released in 2011.Aside from the news on the tree-lighting, there's a few interesting things in the above statement: Jim James is playing for the President and is recording a new LP with MMJ, former battle-rhymer Common is non-threatening enough to be a TV show host on PBS, and BB King, despite numerous facebook and twitter hoaxes, is alive.
As a matter of fact, BB King, who did not have a stroke, will begin another tour of the United States on New Years Eve in Atlantic City. The tour stretches into the end of April, and he tags Wellmont Theater on 1/6 along the way. Full tour dates for (not zombified) BB King are below, along with some videos...

christmas makes me so happy. but it makes me so sad sometimes too. i think that's why i find it so magical. making a christmas album might seem like an odd thing to do, but for us it seems like the most perfect thing. some of my favourite songs are christmas songs. we've always been drawn to them and we've always written them, with the thought that someday we would have enough christmas songs to fill a whole album. and at last we have, so here it is. the boy least likely to christmas special. the christmas album we've always dreamed of making.Christmas Special is the third album from the boy least likely to. Dan Hicks digs Christmas tunes. But it took him over 30 years in the music business to get around to doing his own album of holiday music. The singer/songwriter/guitarist and leader of the Hot Licks, a swinging band with a cult following in the rock world going back to the '70s, has just released Crazy for Christmas on Surfdog Records and is on his way around the country on a tour he calls "Holidaze in Hicksville". The group will perform at a mix of theaters, clubs and coffeehouses, including the Barns at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Va., the City Winery in New York City and McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, Calif.Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks kick off their "Holidaze in Hicksville" tour in NJ tonight (11/27). From there they continue on to Piermont, NY before hitting City Winery in NYC with special guest John Hammond on Tuesday (11/30). All dates and a preview of the Christmas album, below...
Talking via phone from his home in Marin County, California, Hicks says that he's always done Christmas tunes during that time of year with his band, the Hot Licks. "I've been doing Christmas songs with the Hot Licks for a couple of decades. We did about eight or ten tunes, but we didn't do them all at once. We've been doing shows we call Holidaze in Hicksville. We have a canvas backdrop with a cartoon scene of Christmas."

Darlene Love, tree & friends @ South Street Seaport in NYC

Darlene Love will perform her Christmas classic, "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," at the lighting of the South Street Seaport Christmas tree at 6:00pm today (11/26). Santa will be there too, as well the "Elves of Heaven" featuring Corinne Caouette, and the Pace University Department of Performing Arts who will read/perform excerpts from A Christmas Carol.
UPDATE: Pictures of the Christmas tree lighting HERE.
And two nights after Ronnie Spector plays her Christmas show at BB King's in Times Square, Darlene Love will play a Christmas show at the same venue. The Mynabirds @ Fontana's during CMJ
"All I Want is Truth (For Christmas)" is a reminder this Black Friday that it's not all about the gifts. Download The Mynabirds' reworked take on "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" above. Buy it on white vinyl with a b-side cover of The Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year", in the Saddle Creek store.

DOWNLOAD Paul Simon - Getting Ready For Christmas (MP3)
Getting ready for Christmas Day. And let me tell you, namely, the undertaker, he's getting ready for your body. Not only that, the jailer he's getting ready for you. Christmas day. Hmm? And not only the jailer, but the lawyer, the police force. Now getting ready for Christmas day, and I want you to bear it in mind - Reverend GatesPaul Simon is getting ready to release a new album entitled So Beautiful Or So What. It'll be out Spring 2011 via Hear Music / Concord Music Group. Its songs have titles like "The Afterlife," "Love is Eternal Sacred Light," "Questions for the Angels," "Love and Blessings," and "Getting Ready For Christmas Day." I sense a theme there, but for now I can only speak for one track, the track debuting in this post with Christmas in its name.
Download the MP3 for free above. Buy it at iTunes.
I'm a sucker for holiday music, but "Getting Ready For Christmas Day" is not technically a Christmas song. Named after and sampling the last recorded sermon by pre-war American Christian preacher and gospel singer Reverend J.M. Gates, its lyrics and title reference the holiday, but not in the happy way traditional holiday music does. The song covers topics like a relative spending the holiday in Iraq, and not having very much money (probably not an actual issue for Simon, but that's besides the point).
That's part of the sampled part of the lyrics quoted above (right below the old Rev. Gates ad which references another one of Gates' Christmas sermons, "Will the Coffin Be Your Santa Claus"). You can read all the Paul Simon lyrics, complete Reverend J.M. Gates samples included, below. The single's cover art is down there too...
As she has for over two decades, rock icon Ronnie Spector will once again ring in the holiday season with tour dates and other activity in December. On December 15, Ronnie will bring this beloved tradition to a nationwide audience with a special performance on The Late Show with David Letterman. On December 17, she'll perform her annual Christmas show at B.B. King's in New York City...Order the above-pictured CD in Ronnie's store. All US dates below...
Ronnie's December dates include a U.K. tour and additional shows at The Strand Theater in Lakewood, NJ on Dec 16, The Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis, MN on Dec 19-20, and Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT on Christmas day.
The shows will feature a mix of songs from Ronnie's new holiday release, 'Ronnie Spector's Best Christmas Ever,' along with her musings and anecdotes from childhood Christmases in NYC, Ronettes classics - like "Be My Baby" and "Walking in the Rain" - and of course her definitive renditions of "Frosty the Snowman," "Sleigh Ride," and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," each among the most-played Christmas songs of all time.
On December 1, she'll appear at the Penn Plaza Borders to sign copies of 'Best Christmas Ever' beginning at 5pm. In honor of World AIDS Day, Borders will donate 25% of the purchase price to Lifebeat - Music Fights HIV.
Before achieving fame and glory as a leading Pop artist, Andy Warhol was a successful commercial artist who contributed illustrations to women's magazines and designed windows and promotional materials for department stores. Among his clients was Tiffany & Co., for whom he created a series of designs for holiday greeting cards. The whimsical drawings and paintings he produced for Tiffany's Christmas cards are the subject of this charming gift book.A Christmas card by Andy Warhol above. What started out as a scheduling lark -- Turner's 24-hour "A Christmas Story" marathon -- has now spread across the cable yuletide landscape.A Holiday Poem from Brendan Benson and Cory Chisel, and other videos below.
For the 13th year in a row, Turner will dust off the 1983 cult fave, which will air this year from 8 p.m. Christmas Eve until 8 p.m. Christmas Day on TBS....Turner rivals have taken notice -- which means TBS isn't the only cabler decking the halls with a wall-to-wall marathon this year.
Leading the alternatives to "A Christmas Story" is FX, which is planning to run the movie "Night at the Museum" for a full day, also from Christmas Eve evening to Christmas Day evening. FX sister Fox Movie Channel will do the same with "Home Alone."...Over at AMC, the cabler is splitting its holiday marathon in two, running 1954's "White Christmas" all Christmas Eve night, and then 1989's "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" all Christmas day.
Then there's Spike TV, which will spend Dec. 25 running "Bad Santa" over and over again. [Variety]

DOWNLOAD: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - Aint No Chimneys In the Projects (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Binky Griptite - Holiday Breakdown (MP3)
Christmas? Soul? Christmas Soul! Here you go, kids: Sharon Jones' debut holiday song! In this self-penned little jingle-jangler, Sharon takes us back to her childhood, where as a young girl in the projects of Brooklyn she wondered how Santa was ever going to bring her any toys when clearly, "There Ain't No Chimneys in the Projects." As she soon finds out, the true miracle of Christmas was no fat man shimmying down heating ducts, but rather the love with which her own mother had been secretly tucking those presents under that tree. Awww. With a little help from Sharon's backup singers and some tasty violin runs offered up by the Bushwick Philharmonic, the Dap-Kings lock into their usual nasty little pocket and the groove blossoms like a soulful red pointsettia beneath Sharon's story. The flip gives Daptone mouth-man Binky Griptite an instrumental taste overwhich he lays down a heartfelt holiday message of tolerance and togetherness. Right on, Santa! That description describes one of the best holiday gifts that I received this holiday season so far, and that is the new Daptone Records holiday single! Purchase the 45 on their website, or get it free when you order $30 of other stuff, and/or download the songs for free above!
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings have added a Brooklyn show. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL: That Brooklyn show is just a week away, in 2009, and in a bowling alley. It'll probably put all the New Years Eve events happening one night later to shame, and it's only $20 (translation: Sharon Jones is playing Brooklyn Bowl on December 30th!) (get tickets) (they play New Years Eve also, but in DC.)
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings recently played a private and super fancy Urbandaddy holiday party, and not long before that they played a show at Starland Ballroom in NJ. A couple of videos from the Jersey show with all tour dates below...

DOWNLOAD: The Elves of Heaven - This Christmas (MP3)
The folks behind the Seaport Music Festival have started a record label, Seaport Music Records, and have just released their first single -- a holiday-themed song from The Elves of Heaven which is basically Dublin musician Martin Clancy.
Martin became known to us through UK label Fingerlickin' Records and a project we worked together on this past June at the Seaport with the Brooklyn Philharmonic. The first song is a pretty catchy little number, better than your average indie xmas tune, very much in the JAMC/Phil Spector mold. You can download it at the top of this post. Seaport Music Record's second release will be an actual 7" single from Brooklyn band Loose Limbs, 2010 TBD, so keep an eye out.
Martin will be our very first "artist in residence" and over the course of the next few months, you'll be hearing tons of stuff from him.
Julian Koster @ Bell House in March (more by Tim Griffin)
Music Tapes' Julian Koster is on the road with his 2009 Caroling Tour, which kicked off Saturday, December 5th in Georgia. The revised schedule for the trip is posted below. Its NYC portion will be happening on December 16th and 17th. E-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to get on the list for the exact location and time of the shows. For more info (including a note about posting things online about the shows) and to offer financial support, visit orbitinghumancircus.org.
Two Xmas tracks off Koster's The Singing Saw at Christmastime are posted above.
Another holiday happening that's already underway is "Eternal Christmas: A Yuletide Dreamland", an art exhibit/show space presented by Flaming Fire at 525 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn. It began over the weekend (12/4) and runs through January 5th (12-8 daily, 12-11 Thurs-Sun, $5 suggested donation). The art work tackles "the mythological and cultural roots of the winter season." The installations' "house band" will be Brooklyn's Lydsod, and the schedule includes a performance by Dewanatron (who opened for Music Tapes in March). More info is below.
Both schedules and Julian Koster singing saw videos are below...
John Waters as the other creepy old Santa...
A John Waters Christmas is hitting the road this December. Six dates are scheduled with a New York City stop at BB King's on December 22nd. The show takes the form of a monologue that "explores and explodes traditional archetypes as [Waters] shares his compulsive desire to give and receive perverted gifts, a religious fanaticism for Santa Claus, and an unhealthy love of true crime holiday horror stories." Tickets for the NY show are on sale. He visits New Brunswick, NJ's State Theatre four days before (12/18) and tickets for that are on sale too. All dates below.
A John Waters Christmas is actually the name of the director's own holiday compilation that features the likes of Fat Daddy, Alvin & The Chipmunks and Tiny Tim. Videos of few of those are below.
BB King's will host another holiday show with Darlene Love on December 13th. The singer is a 2010 nominee for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and she appeared at the museum's two-night MSG show with Bruce & the E Street band. A video of her annual Letterman performance of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is below. Tickets are on sale.
Darlene Love's Love for the Holidays will also be at Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, NJ on Sunday, December 20th. Tickets are on sale.
Elsewhere in Jersey, Darlene teams up with Ronnie Spector for "A Christmas Gift for You" at Red Bank, NJ's Count Basie Theater on Thursday, December 17th. (Both got their holiday start in part from their songs on 1963's A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector.) Tickets are on sale.
Then, Ronnie Spector's annual X-Mas Party runs for two nights at BB King's on Saturday, December 19th and Sunday, December 20th. Tickets are on sale.
Spector's new disc The Last of the Rock Stars (...) has guest appearances that include Keith Richards, Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Patti Smith, Patrick Keeler (The Raconteurs) and Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather). There's also a version of "It's Christmas Once Again" to add to your holiday rotation alongside ubiquitous Ronettes versions of "Sleigh Ride" and "Frosty the Snowman."
Speaking of Patti Smith, she has some annual holiday shows coming up of her own, but those are after Christmas and include New Years Eve.
Dates & songs from all three are posted below...
Bob Dylan will release a brand new album of holiday songs, Christmas In The Heart, on Tuesday, October 13, it was announced today by Columbia Records. All of the artist's U.S. royalties from sales of these recordings will be donated to Feeding America, guaranteeing that more than four million meals will be provided to more than 1.4 million people in need in this country during this year's holiday season. Bob Dylan is also donating all of his future U.S. royalties from this album to Feeding America in perpetuity. The artwork for that record is posted above. More info, video of Kent Jones ripping on the idea on MSNBC, Bob reading Twas The Night Before Christmas, and info on the possibility of Bob Dylan giving directions on your GPS, below...
Christmas In The Heart will be the 47th album from Bob Dylan, and follows his worldwide chart-topping Together Through Life, released earlier this year. Songs performed by Dylan on this new album include, "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Winter Wonderland," "Little Drummer Boy" and "Must Be Santa."

Julian Koster & friends in a NYC apartment
The European-folk-music-influenced duo of ex-Neutral Milk Hotel drummer Jeremy Barnes and violinist Heather Trost, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, is set to play two upcoming NYC shows - January 10th at Mercury Lounge (tix), with Great Lake Swimmers, and January 11th at Union Hall (tix).
Barnes didn't turn out for the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise tour earlier this winter, and so far these are A Hawk and a Hacksaw's only announced 2009 dates.
With H&H, there's always the possibility of a Beirut-related appearance, as they've worked & toured together, and are on the same label (Badabing. There's even video evidence of previous collabs (see below). Zach Condon recently appeared unannounced at an Inlets show, and Beirut are playing three NYC shows in February (ahem, for now).
In other NMH-stalking news - a while back BV reported that the Music Tapes Caroling tour would be making its way north from Georgia through New York to Maine playing living rooms and houses along the route. Fans were encouraged to invite "Julian and his friends" to their house. I [Andrew] did so, and strangely enough, on December 13th, Julian, Rudolph (dog) and Badger (musical saw) stopped by at my place with a few other friends in tow for a set of saw-sung carols, fantasical stories and a couple Music Tapes banjo tunes - all performed solo next to the Christmas tree. Even with the show's short notice - I'd just gotten an email that morning with details - about ten to fifteen fans showed up for the event. After the set, Julian paused for a few snapshots (see above) and left as quickly as he had came - I unfortunately wasn't able to follow the traveling party to the next apartment. Jesse Jarnow, contributer to the Voice, attended and wrote up the event on that blog.
Julian was recently featured on NPR's Morning Edition, which commented that The Singing Saw at Christmastime's layered saws "capture just a bit of bone-chilling terror -- just right for these uncertain times." On Christmas day, Julian and friends gave an interview and performed live for NPR's World Cafe. If you missed it, you can listen to it now at their site.
In addition to the date above, Great Lake Swimmers are also playing the Bell House in Brooklyn January 9th (tix) with Haley Bonar & Daniel Martin Moore, and a Feburary 7th date in Guelph, Ontario, near their home base of Toronto, for the Hillside Festival.
Video of Beirut playing with Hawk & A Hacksaw, and all dates, below...
