Like she's done in past winters, Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin will come to NYC this winter for a 2-night stand at the historic Radio City Music Hall on January 17 and 18. Tickets for those shows go on sale Friday (12/6) at 11 AM. Her only other announced date at the moment is a show in her hometown of Detroit this month (12/21).
Besides those two shows, Aretha will be appearing in public even sooner at this year's National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in DC, which takes place on Friday (12/6) at The Ellipse, not far from the White House. Both Barack and Michelle Obama will be there, and other performers include Janelle Monae, The Avett Brothers, and more. The ceremony will stream live online at 4:30 PM.

Clothier, dorm room furnisher, vinyl outlet and soon-to-be-Williamsburg-retailer (maybe with a liquor licence), Urban Outfitters recently released a pair of hand painted leather jackets that have been raising some eyebrows around the Internet. The jackets, a Crass-Sex Pistols-Clash mashup and a Dio-Megadeth-W.A.S.P. disaster, are selling for $375, here and here respectively. For that amount, you could buy two of The Clash's massive $175 Sound System, but you can't wear a box set of complete remastered works. Mind you UO's website says they're genuine vintage and only have one of each. They've been available for a while -- who would pull the trigger on these babies?
In the spirit of all things apparel, a preview of metal and hip hop themed holiday sweaters that you might actually think about wearing, below...
GWAR at the 2013 GWAR-B-Q in Richmond, VA (more by Josh Sisk)
While we're still feeling aftershocks from MIA's bird-flipping incident during the 2012 Super Bowl Halftime show, there is currently an online petition to get GWAR for the 2015 Halftime show. So far, nearly 40,000 people have signed it. GWAR have officially endorsed this, with bandleader Oderus Urungus saying:
It has long been the joy of GWAR to submit the human race to any number of hideous tortures, and I can't think of anything more horrible than you having to watch acts like The Black-Eyed Peas and Bruno Mars perform. So the temptation to ignore this is great! But then you start thinking about all of the people that who have never experienced GWAR before, and will be forced to do so if we do get the gig, well, at that point my colossal mega-ego kicks in and I am all over it.You can sign the petition too.
Meanwhile, in the present, GWAR (who played Riotfest Chicago recently) released their new CD, Battle Maximus last week (9/17), and you can stream the title track below. They'll be on tour for most of the fall. While none of those dates hit NYC, they have announced a short run of holiday shows in December that includes a stop in NYC at Irving Plaza on December 27. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (9/27) at 11 AM. All tour dates are listed below.
With Thanksgivukkah (first night of Hanukkah is the same day as Thanksgiving this year) and Christmas on the way, it'll soon be time to get in the holiday spirit. If you're looking ways to celebrate in NYC, you're in luck, because plenty of holiday shows are getting announced.
Matisyahu, who just played Central Park and is working on a new album with an expected summer 2014 release, has announced his annual "Festival of Light" shows. The run begins in Chicago on November 30 and comes to NYC on December 8 at Webster Hall. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (9/20) at noon with an AmEx presale starting today (9/18) at noon. All dates are listed below.
Meanwhile, on the eve of Thanksgivukkah, Walshy Fire of Major Lazer will do a Thanksgiving Eve celebration at Highline Ballroom (11/27). Tickets for that show are on sale now.
Though Yo La Tengo haven't announced any shows happening during Hanukkah this year, they did just announce three holiday shows happening at The Bell House in December.
Individual shows haven't been announced yet, but the Sephardic Music Festival will return to various NYC venues from November 27 to December 5.
Speaking of BB King's and Christmas, the venue will also again host their annual shows from A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector singers Darlene Love on December 6 and Ronette Ronnie Spector on December 22. Tickets for the Darlene Love show and the Ronnie Spector show are on sale now.
But before we get too ahead ourselves, Halloween is on the way too!

Sufjan Stevens brought his The Surfjohn Stevens Christmas Sing-A-Long Seasonal Affective Disorder Yuletide Disaster Pageant On Ice tour with comedian "Sheila Saputo" (aka singer-songwriter Rosie Thomas) to NYC last week for shows at Bowery Ballroom on Friday (12/21) and Saturday (12/22), the final two nights of the tour. Like the other shows on the tour, he played a long set of mostly Christmas songs and then returned for an encore of Sufjan classics. It was a wild, confetti-filled holiday celebration and pictures from the second night of his NYC run are in this post. More, along with the setlist from night one, below...

The Polyphonic Spree at Webster Hall - 12/15/12
For the show the Spree performed two sets: a Christmas spectacular and a regular rock set. But of course this wasn't a solemn Christmas affair. Not a bit of that. Featuring Christmas songs old and new (A Nightmare Before Christmas's "Town Meeting Song" was sung) the set included confetti, balloons, Santa, a snowman, and more rocking the yuletide spirit. And of course there was the large band all dressed up in festive versions of their usual chorus dresses. The only band member in pants was lead singer Tim DeLaughter (his dress came out in the second set) who exuded a wonderful demented Christmas Willy Wonka vibe--especially when he invited the children in the audience up on stage. It was all very silly, and by the time "Feliz Navidad" it was hard not to bounce around, high on the holidays, and forget the latest horrible news [Gothamist]The Polyphonic Spree brought their Holiday Extravaganza! Tour to NYC for a show at Webster Hall last Saturday (12/15). As mentioned in the above review, the show included a set of Christmas songs, in addition to a set of Polyphonic Spree songs, which included their cover of Nirvana's old chesnut, "Lithium."

It's about that time of the year when the Christmas songs start piling. We just heard Ex Cops take on Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime", and now The xx have revealed a cover of Wham's "Last Christmas" on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge this morning. Check it out below.

Admission. Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas Time" is easily my most-hated holiday pop song. Repetive, grating, plodding, and seemingly recorded by accident, the song makes me want to suck a candycane into a point and gouge out my eardrums. (Unlike, say, The Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping" which I can listen to ad infinitum.) So it's a Christmas miracle that Ex Cops have taken this unfortunate Macca yuletide perennial and sped it up, turned it up and transformed it into a rough-hewn little indiepop charmer. We've got the premiere of the song right here in the post to download above or stream below. Merry Ex-mas.
Another present you're going to have to wait a bit for is Ex Cops terrific debut album, True Hallucinations, which hits January 22 via Other Music Recording Company. The band are playing a record release show at Glasslands that same day with Hunters also on the bill (tickets). After that, Ex Cops play Mercury Lounge on February 15 and tickets to that show are on sale at noon. You can see them sooner than that, though, as they were just added to tonight's Paul Banks show at Webster Hall (12/14) and tickets are still available.
Meanwhile Ex Cops' Brian Harding and Amalie Bruun have each submitted lists of their favorite songs from 2012. In a bit of daring, they both include their own single "You Are a Lion, I Am a Lamb" on their respective lists. Check them out below.
Bad Brains, who recently released their new album "Into the Future", are actually holding a 'holiday sale' in their online store, but what this post is really about is the great Peanuts/Bad Brains mashup video below...

The Gregory Brothers will play their seventh annual Christmas show in NYC at Rockwood Music Hall on December 12 with Dusty Brown, Melanie Penn, and Sarah and the Stanleys. Tickets for the show are on sale now and all proceeds go to Sandy Recovery. They're promising "Christmas Cheer, Christmas Beer, Hot Toddies, Hot Bodies and music too!"

You can stream the entire release below or purchase it for $5 on bandcamp.

Back by popular demand is the uber-kitschy Descendents sweater, which features the band's mascot with crossbones amidst a grid of musical notes Available in two colors, this bastion of ridiculousity is on sale now for the Milo in your family.
Similarly, Slayer, the obvious go-to for holiday merch, has a Christmas sweater of their own on sale now. Because nothing says holiday cheer like a chest full of skulls and pentagrams.
This of course isn't the first time that Slayer has been juxtaposed against the holiest of days. Check out some of our favorite videos of Christmas lights below.
Don't like Slayer or Descendents? How about a David Bowie sweater? Or a Morrissey one? Or New Kids on The Block? Check out a few different ideas at Buzzfeed.

Darlene Love @ South Street Seaport 2010 (more by Chris La Putt)
November 2012 update from The Howard Hughes Corporation:
The safety and security of our employees, tenants and customers is always our top priority, and we are grateful that no one was seriously injured at The Seaport during the storm.May the Seaport rise again, but meanwhile that means no Christmas Tree this year, or at least no tree lighting ceremony, which in 2010 included a performance by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Darlene Love.
Hurricane Sandy caused incredible devastation to our City, and The Seaport was seriously impacted.
While we currently do not have a definitive timeline for reopening, The Howard Hughes Corporation is very committed to rebuilding the Uplands and Pier 17 as soon as possible. To that end, we are working diligently to coordinate all necessary assessment, remediation and inspection of the many buildings that make up South Street Seaport. In fact, remediation in some areas is already underway, including certain common areas. However, because of the various issues related to the Uplands and Pier 17, it will be several weeks before everything is fully evaluated by experts and a more firm timetable can be established. Some buildings at The Seaport may open sooner than others and we will share updates through our website and other channels as available.
At this time, tenants are being permitted to access their spaces to assess damage and address their own business issues. Otherwise, Pier 17 is currently closed to the public, except for essential personnel.
The Seaport is a popular and treasured destination in Lower Manhattan, and we have an exciting redevelopment plan for Pier 17 that will continue despite the storm. We are very proud of the hard work of our team and hope to be able to share more updates soon. We look forward to rebuilding and welcoming visitors and neighbors back to The Seaport as soon as possible.
Darlene Love, as always, will still be celebrating the holidays though. Her Annual Christmas Celebration at B.B. King's in NYC has gone from one to two nights of cheer. Tickets are sale for shows on December 9 and December 10. You can also catch Darlene on Letterman on 12/20 (watch the video of her appearance last year below and at NJPAC in Newark two days later. Tickets are on sale for the 12th annual show at B.B. King's on 12/14. All dates are listed below...

The Polyphonic Spree at Webster Hall in May (more by Toby Tenenbaum)
The Polyphonic Spree released their new Christmas album, Holidaydream: Sounds of the Holidays Volume One on October 23. Of the ten standards it features, the collective just made a video for "Winter Wonderland," and you can watch that for the first time at the bottom of this post.
The video's director Josh David Jordan writes:
"When I first heard Winter Wonderland I was really moved by the way it had a beautiful haunting beginning. I remember thinking, " What happens when Santa has had too much of the elves, the up keep of the North Pole's day to day, and turns in the cookies and milk for a glass of scotch." Lucky for me my friend Jack enjoys scotch, has Santa's snowy locks and can be easily found on the patio of the City Tavern in downtown Dallas. Jack was also the original voice of Popeye's Chicken commercials, so when I asked him to recite 'Twas the night before Christmas' intro, he didn't hesitate. Spontaneity took over for the rest of the video. I dressed my youngest as the elves, my beautiful and talented wife Jessica Jordan (who is a member of the Spree) assumed the part of the queen elf and partner in crime ( we broke into an old abandoned church for her scenes), and Tim allowed me to get up close and personal for the mouth shots. In the end, Santa just may have had one too many scotch's and will be back to the milk and cookies just in time for Christmas this year."As mentioned, the band are celebrating the album with their Holiday Extravaganza! Tour which brings them to NYC on December 15 at Webster Hall. Tickets for that show are still available.
