Deer Tick @ Prospect Park in August (more by Chris La Putt)

This Halloween Deer Tick will be performing at Brooklyn Bowl and like you (presumably) they'll be going in costume - the band will perform as the Sex Pistols for the night. Joining them will be a "special guest" band playing the songs of Sonic Youth and Dangerous: All Metal Tribute to Michael Jackson. There's free admission with a costume. Otherwise it's $5, and tickets are on sale at noon.
Deer Tick play the Partisan Records tour, which kicked off Monday, Oct. 19th and includes a CMJ showcase at Bowery Ballroom on October 22nd (now sold out unless you have a CMJ badge). The entire Partisan Records roster (minus one) are along for the ride. That includes Chris Denny & the Natives, who are playing the BV day party at Pianos earlier that day (Denny just interviewed Ben Nichols of Lucero right here), Holy Sons (Emil Amos of Om), Dolorean (not to be confused with Delorean) and (on half the dates including NYC) Paleo. All of those acts are included on the free sampler from the label posted above.
All tour dates, a Halloween show poster, the sampler tracklist and updated Deer Tick tour dates are below...
Ben Nichols (Lucero) @ Maxwell's (more by Tim Griffin)

Seeing that Lucero is about to be in town with a big show at Webster Hall on Saturday night (10/17), and that Chris Denny (last seen on stage with Deer Tick in Prospect Park) is about to make another NYC appearance (including at the free BrooklynVegan day party at Pianos on Thursday, October 22nd), I thought it might be cool to get these two Arkansas musicians (who have met before) on the phone.
It turned out better than I could have imagined. Chris (who recently singed to Partisan Records making him Deer Tick's label-mate) and Lucero front-man Ben Nichols ended up discussing Lucero's decision to go with Universal Records for their new album (1372 Overton Park), drinking, horns, whiskey, marriage, The Pogues, whiskey, Tom Petty, drinking and much more. Check it out, along with all tour dates and some videos and stuff, below...

Deer Tick in a sombrero on a boat (pic by Katie Alexander)

Deer Tick played a boat on September 7th (Labor Day). More specifically, they played a Rock Off Concert Cruise with opener Jonny Corndawg (an old friend and fellow songwriter f Tick frontman John McCauley). Videos from the gig are posted below. Earlier in the weekend, Deer Tick played a set at The Positive Jam in Ithaca...
True-to-heart American music with a kind of dark poetic twist, Deer Tick sounded like the bluesy rock that fuels long nights at the bar talking about your true love, the job you lost, etc. Far from being a stereotype, however, John McCauley's slightly nasal, drawling voice gave new meaning to any preconceived ideas about country or folk music. The audience, which on Sunday was slow to get going, lingered in the shade during Deer Tick's set. Their lyrics encouraged a slow roll rather than rambunctious dancing -- "I've lived lies all my life / and I've been living here a long, long time / And it's been coming down a while now," Cauley sang in "Art Isn't Real." Introspective, indeed. [The Cornell Daily Sun]Coming up, the band have added a week-long Partisan Records tour to their already-extensive upcoming dates. The NYC part of that tour will happen as part of CMJ at Bowery Ballroom on October 22nd. Deer Tick share the bill with Christopher Denny, Dolorean, Holy Sons and Paleo. Tickets go on sale Friday, September 11th at noon.
Christopher Denny is the latest addition to the Partisan Records family, and was recently seen actually on stage with Deer Tick in Prospect Park.
Holy Sons is the solo project of Emil Amos of Om who are also playing Bowery Ballroom in October.

"John Mcauley of Deer Tick just proposed to Nikki Darlin of Those Darlins on stage in Prospect Park. She said yes!" - BrooklynVegan @ 8:41 PM Aug 7th

Deer Tick played after Jones Street Station and before Grace Potter & the Nocturnals at the free Celebrate Brooklyn show in Prospect Park on Friday night (8/7).
After an attention-grabbing, intro-drum-solo by drummer Dennis Michael Ryan (complete with white Blueblockers on), the band came on stage and continued to play what can only be called a historic show, for Deer Tick anyway. Not only were we treated to a guest spot by Deer Tick regular Liz Isenberg, but out of nowhere, six songs into the set, Arkansas' Christopher Denny appeared on stage to also help sing a song. We haven't heard from Chris in a while - he's in town to record a new album, and his stand-out voice caused even the zillion people talking in the back to look up for at least a second.
Another Deer Tick highlight was the set-closing cover of "La Bamba", but that's not what made the show historic. That was the toe ring (that came along with a proposal) (that confirmed that John McCauley and Those Darlins' Nikki Darlin are officially off the market). Overall not only a great show, but lots of variety to help introduce the band to a Park Slope crowd full of distracted people who probably never heard of them before. More pictures below...

Chrisopher Denny is returning to NYC for CMJ. While he's here he'll play just two shows. The second show is his official ASCAP CMJ showcase at Canal Room on Wednesday October 17th
8:30pm - Christopher DennyAnd his first is earlier that same day at the free BrooklynVegan day party at Pianos @ 2:30pm. He'll be playing upstairs from Joan as Policewoman who will be downstairs on the main stage. Stay tuned for the whole upstairs lineup. Pfork just gave his album Age Old Hunger a 7.4.
9:15pm - Arizona
10:00pm - Air Traffic
10:45pm - Division Day
11:30pm - Die Romantik
12:15am - Dragonette
He credits his teenage discovery of Lefty Frizzell and Hank Thompson with inspiring him to write songs, and on Age Old Hunger he covers popular, some might say obvious songs by Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash. To his credit, however, he never comes across as a nostalgia act, which for this genre would be excruciating. Rather, he is content to sound like he sounds. All of Christopher's tour dates are below....
