The Guggenheim will be hosting a three-part music series at the museum this summer. Running in conjunction with their "Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance" exhibition (currently on view at the museum through September 6), "DARK SOUNDS" has the following schedule:
* July 15, 2010: BEIRUTTickets will go on sale to museum members ($25) at noon, and to non-members ($30) on Friday at www.guggenheim.org/darksounds...
* August 5, 2010: ANDREW BIRD AND IAN SCHNELLER
* September 3, 2010: CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA
"Produced by Sam Brumbaugh, Special Events Consultant, and Bronwyn Keenan, Associate Director of Special Events, the series takes its thematic cue from the conceptual threads that weave through Haunted, aiming to evoke the exhibition's elements of melancholy, ghostliness, the uncanny, and our collective and individual obsession with accessing the past. The series title is borrowed from the writings of Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936), who is often described as the father of the modern ghost story."This makes three upcoming NYC shows for Beirut who also play MHOW on July 5 & 6.
The Andrew & Ian show sounds especially special It is: "Andrew Bird & Ian Schneller's Sonic Arboretum, a site-specific performance involving violin, looped passages, and a landscape of horn speakers." That's Ian with some horn speakers pictured above.
Andrew Bird only has a handful of other shows scheduled. They are all listed, along with info on a "Dark Sounds membership package, below...

They say that the clothes make the man, but in the music world, the drummer makes the band. That's the only way to explain the string of successes that have followed Dave Witte since he first sat behind the kit as a member of the influential yet under-appreciated Human Remains. Since then, Witte has played with some of the greatest bands in the heavy underground, laying the back beat to names as powerful as Municipal Waste, Discordance Axis, Anodyne, Black Army Jacket, Melt Banana, and we can't forget about Burnt By The Sun.
Burnt By The Sun recently released their swansong, Heart of Darkness, via Relapse Records. In celebration of this last LP, the band will embark on final tour of Europe in October with only one US date scheduled: October 2nd at Cake Shop with Tombs, Black Anvil, Bloodhorse, and Torchbearer. Considering the band members' current undertakings, it isn't out the question to say that this could be their last show for a very very long time.
With that as a primer, I fired some questions at Dave Witte about Municipal Waste, the end of Burnt By The Sun, and the possiblity of him returning to the kit for Human Remains, Discordance Axis or Black Army Jacket. The conversation is below....

WNYC's long-awaited annual winter film series returns to the World Financial Center featuring classic silent films set to innovative and energetic scores by Gary Lucas, the BQE Ensemble, and The Cinematic Orchestra.You can watch a video clip of Gary Lucas performing his soundtrack to the Golem, below...Each night, starting at 7PM, experience a different film and its inventive new music score.
On Tuesday night, Feb. 10, Gary Lucas performs ghostly improvisational solo guitar for three surrealist films: "Entr'acte", "Ballet Mecanique", and "The Cameraman's Revenge."
Wednesday evening, Feb. 11, the BQE Project's palette of exotic instruments from Middle Eastern drums to mandolin accompanies "The Golem."
And on Thursday night, Feb. 12, the Cinematic Orchestra's moody, electronica-tinged jazz-funk follows "Man with a Movie Camera."
And it's all FREE!

Sometimes I procrastinate posting about something so much, that it just never happens. Such is the case so far with The Cinematic Orchestra who I wished I was going to see at Webster Hall tonight (and who played Summerstage and Joe's Pub this summer - and cancelled a show at Bowery Ballroom, actually). I don't know what their lineup will be at Webster, but Polaris Music Prize winner Patrick Watson sings on some of the best songs on Ma Fleur - their new album that I like, but don't love. I wanted to love it like I love This Mortal Coil (or something like that), but some of the songs just don't do it for me.
On a related note, Patrick Watson's own album just came out in the United States this week, and you can listen to it at AOL. What else?
