Cover of the Grails side of the Pharoah Overlord split
Grails are preparing the release of Black Tar Prophecies Vol.5, one side of a split with the Finnish greats Pharaoh Overlord (members of Circle). That record will see the light of day via Grails' new label home of Kemado on October 30. Stream the lush and cinematic opus, "Chariots," below alongside their forthcoming schedule of dates down under.
The cover for Black Tar Prophecies Vol. 5 is a skewed reference to another album cover, one recorded during a "weird period" by a very important and hugely influential musician. Do you know the musician and art that it references? If so, head below for details on how to enter a contest to win a copy of the vinyl!
Reminder, Emil Amos from Grails will also be in the NYC area soon, touring with Om as part of their round of make-up dates (due to Emil's injury). Those dates include November 21st at Bowery Ballroom, tickets are still available.
That stream, the Pharoah Overlord art for their side of the split, a list of tour dates, and contest details are below.
Much like in their related band Circle, Jussi Lehtisalo, Janne Westerlund and Tomi Leppänen inject their fair share of oddity into their Pharaoh Overlord project. Primarily based in the stoner-krautrock genres, Pharaoh Overlord, which now contains Faust great Hans Joachim Irmler, ventures into hynotic space-blues, jazzy passages, and even some ambient in their unique melting-pot longplayer Lunar Jetman, due on 2xLP via SIGE Records (up for pre-order) and CD via Ektro. Check out the opening cut from the LP, "Rodent" and "Cardinal" both streaming below.
Meanwhile, kraut-prog-metal-all-of-the-above band Circle is ALSO preparing a new studio record of their own (aren't they always?), due via Hydra Head in time for Record Store Day. Look for details regarding Manner in the coming weeks but in the meantime, look for a new live LP from the band via Ektro. Serpent, a live album pulled from an October 2011 show in the UK, is currently up for preorder and you can stream two songs from that release below.
In related news, Ektro has also released a retrospective of Finland's Death Trip as well. Death Trip combined slithering punk with the gothic post-punk touches of The Birthday Party and the brutality of the mighty Brainbombs, and you can eulogize their passing with Pain is Pain - The Complete Death Trip 1988-1994. Stream a pair of tracks, "Chainsaw Goddess" and "Death Trip", both of which are below.
All streams are below, along with some video.

They played our SXSW kickoff party last year & pretty much stole the show. I wrote then:
Looking like a cross between Sparks and Yello (at Octoberfest) and sounding like some kind of synth funk you'd hear from Bizarro World DFA Records, they were weird and awesome and won the initially-perplexed crowd over quickly. The band have signed to Kompact who will release their new album, Knee Deep, in April. The album (they're calling it a mini-LP but at 43 minutes it seems like a long player to me) is a bit darker, and has a general paranoid vibe to it. You can download the Circle Remix of "Every Minute Alone" (Knee Deep's lead single) at the top of this post. They are seriously awesome live, don't miss them. Dates below...

Insanely prolific leaders of the NWOFHM (that's New Wave of Finnish Heavy Metal), Circle, have a DVD called Saturnus Reality on the way. It's out March 10th via No Quarter, and you can also catch it at a FREE screening on Friday March 13th at Monkeytown in Brooklyn. Retro-rockers Endless Boogie will DJ the event.
Circle recently dropped the live 2LP Triumph on Fourth Dimension Records. Pick that up here. Before that they released Hollywood which was one of only TWO releases for the Finns in 2008.... slack much? In 2007, Circle released two LPs (including a collaboration with Sunburned Hand Of The Man), two live albums and a seven inch. In 2006 it was two LPs, two live albums, an EP and .... ah you get where I am going with this.
More details on the screening, and a video preview of the movie, below...

War is beautiful...... Torche (more by Jason Bergman)
Torche have teamed up with labelmates (and former tourmates) Clouds, for a string of freshly minted US tour dates with Coliseum and Black Cobra providing support. Torche is also currently gearing up for a European tour with another set of labelmates, Pelican, which concludes on October 11th. The first date on the Torche / Clouds tour is October 24th with Coliseum. CMJ is October 21st - 25th. Will we see Torche, Clouds or Coliseum at CMJ? No word yet (natch), but when we know, so will you. Full tour dates below.
Speaking of Pelican, the boys have issued a rather thorough update in which they detail their loooong awaited split with These Arms Are Snakes (due on Hydrahead, limited quantities), a split 7" with Young Widows (due in 2009), a collaborative split 7" with Suicide Note, and a Fire In Their Throats.... 2LP release in Viva Hate Records. But the band also dropped more interesting news..... including the fact that the band will tour the east coast in the fall, have a video for "Lost in the Headlights" in the works, and are working on their follow up to City Of Echoes. More details to come. Speaking of These Arms Are Snakes, the band recently posted "Red Line Season" to their myspace for streaming.
Coffins have contributed two songs, one new and another a cover of "The Day Man Lost" by swedish death metallers Carnage, to a split 7" with sludgy-grind enthusiasts Skullhog. Pick it up NOW at No Escape, it's limited to 500 copies (200 on red wax). Coffins also have the following releases lined up: the Warhead 7" EP (on Torture Garden); Split 7" EPs with Womb (on Necroharmonic), Lobotomized (on Plague Island), and Spun In Darkness (Battle Kommand); Split 12" LPs with The Arm And Sword Of A Bastard God (the vinyl release on Enucleation, originally on CD via 20 Buck Spin), Anatomia & Grudge (the three-way split vinyl release on Enucleation, originally dropped on Grindmind), and XXX Maniak (the vinyl release on Haunted Hotel, originally released on CD via Creeping Vine); a Singles collection from 2004-2008 (on Living Dead Society); a mini album (on Bones Brigade); a track on the Death Metal Power Compilation Vol.1 (on Final Punishment).
Engineer is currently working on their follow up to The Dregs, and have "close to five songs completed". Look for the band to line up a few new shows in the coming months.
