Omegas at 538 Johnson (more by Keith Marlowe)
Omegas

‎*** We regret to announce that Citizens Arrest will not be performing at ABC NO RIO this Saturday (12/17). Daryl has contracted a serious case of pneumonia and obviously, can not perform. We have been replaced by the OMEGAS. We apologize to any of you who have made extensive plans to see us. The show will still go on and the lineup is still stellar and worth your time. Remember it is a benefit for ABC NO RIO!***
At least their replacement is the great Omegas who also play 538 Johnson with The Boston Strangler, Creem and In School later that night and whose Blasts of Lunacy was one of my favorite records of 2011.

No word on how Daryl's sickness will affect Funebrarum's appearance at the Acheron/Gorephobia/Mutant Supremacy show at Saint Vitus later that night, but we'll keep you posted.

UPDATE: Funebrarum cancels their Acheron appearance as well.

Get well soon Daryl!

King Louie Bankston

King Louie Bankston (born Louis Paul Bankston) is a prolific garage punk musician from Harahan, Louisiana. He is best known for his work in The Royal Pendletons, The Persuaders, The Exploding Hearts, and The King Louie One Man Band.
King Louie Bankston will bring his band Missing Monuments to NYC for a show at Cake Shop TONIGHT (11/28). They'll lead a bill that will also include appearances from Night Birds, Ex Humans and Pretty Quick. The show is part of a round of dates in celebration of Missing Monuments' new LP Painted White, which is streaming in full at Facebook and out now via Douchemaster Records.

The show is one of TWO dates in NYC scheduled for Night Birds, who will also play ABC No Rio with Citizens Arrest, Mind Eraser, The Inflatable Children and Death First on December 17th.

12/17 is turning out to be an insanely busy day with ABC No Rio during the day time and night shows from both the sunsetting Defeatist at Death by Audio and a just announced show with Montreal's Omegas, The Boston Strangler, Mauser, and Creem at 538 Johnson.

Mortuary Drape have unfortunately cancelled their entire US tour with Inquisition, including their appearance at Rites of Darkness and their 12/2 date at The Studio at Webster Hall with Negative Plane who has also dropped off of the bill. If you can't make it to The Studio at Webster Hall, Inquisition will join Dark Funeral, Abigail Williams, and Gigan for a string of US dates that will hit Gramercy Theater on 1/30. Tickets are still available. Full tour schedule is below

The Studio show is one of many lined up for Daryl Kahan of Disma who will also do double duty on 12/17, first as part of Citizens Arrest at ABC No Rio, and then with Funebarum who plays with Acheron (the band), Goreaphobia, and Mutant Supremacy that night at Saint Vitus (ticketing info forthcoming).

Citizens Arrest at Europa (more by Keith Marlowe)
Citizens Arrest

"Joe Martin, who played in Citizens Arrest during ABC No Rio's early days, remembers the space as offering a second chance. "For me, I had made the promise to myself that I would stop going to hardcore shows the day I got beat up. And then it happened to me, at one of the hardcore matinees they had--Judge, Born Against, and Affirmative Action. Some skinhead picked a fight with me and maybe I didn't get beat up, but I did get punched. So I said, that was it, no more, because I knew everytime I would go to a show from then on, I'd see this guy and panic and run away. But then ABC started, and right then and there, that feeling stopped. Every week I'd go there, I didn't care who was playing--I'd go support any band, and I guess for a while a lot of other people did too. There'd be a solid 50 people for every show."" [ABC No Rio history]
Citizens Arrest will play ABC No Rio again on 12/17/2011, their first time since 1991! Joining them is the all-star lineup of Mind Eraser, Night Birds, The Inflatable Children and Death First at what will one of the last shows in the old ABC No Rio space. It's also a benefit for the the organization which will get a new building in 2012 (we don't have an exact close date yet). $10 gets you in the door. No advanced tickets.

Other upcoming shows at ABC No Rio include Japanther with The Homewreckers, Devestation Wagon, TitFit on 10/29, Boom Boom Kid, Wud Link, Ilegales Sin Fronteras, and Mi Culpa on 11/5, Wound, Skelptarsis, Kama Rupa, and (A)Truth on 11/12,Miscegnator, Coke Bust, DBCR, Sick Fix on 11/19 (Coke Bust play later that night with Masakari at Acheron), Tombs & Inhuman on 12/3, and Mischief Brew, The Swaggerin' Growlers and more TBA on 12/10.

Japanther, who played CMJ last week at Party Xpo and DROM on 10/21, has one other date scheduled before the end of the year, on 12/2 in Troy, NY at EMPAC as part of a "commissioned performance piece."

As previously mentioned, members of Mind Eraser will hit Acheron next week (on 11/3) as part of The Rival Mob, with appearances from Young Offenders, Give, and Airfix Kits.

Check out a video of Citizens Arrest and other bands playing ABC No Rio in the early 90s, below...

Disma

The NYC area is rich with veterans of the hardcore and metal scenes, but not quite as fertile with people who have done time in both. Daryl Kahan is one of those. Equally as likely to be found in an SSD shirt as he is to be seen in a Demigod one, Daryl's past is littered with multiple hardcore, blackened, and death metal bands that bear names like Funebrarum, Citizens Arrest, and Abazagorath. One weekend, Maryland Deathfest 2011, called for Kahan to hit the stage with both the blasting hardcore of Citizens Arrest and the unholy death metal of the reactivated Funebrarum. Kahan is an example that the word extreme isn't limited to any one scene.

Daryl's new project, the bulldozing death-metal machine Disma, recently released their latest LP Towards The Megalith and are preparing for their record release party with Coffinworm, Unearthly Trance, and Oak (at Saint Vitus on 8/6, tickets).

I sat down with Daryl to discuss Disma, Citizens Arrest, Funebrarum, Assuck, and cassette trading culture. The results are below.

Autopsy
Chaos in Tejas

An uber-late Thursday night with Tragedy and Origin of M ruined me for Friday day shows (and daylight, for that matter), but I was not going to miss one of my favorite two-pieces, Iron Lung at Emo's outdoors on the 2nd day of Chaos in Tejas 2011 (June 3rd). The band was third on the bill that hot and sticky night. They played after Hatred Surge and Cider, and were followed by an amazing lineup of fast/brutal featuring Innumerable Forms, Extortion, Citizens Arrest, and the piece de resistance, a headlining set from none other than Autopsy. The show was a stark contrast to what was happeing on the inside state: Lower Dens, Milk Music, The Young, and Unholy Two. Allo Darlin' were supposed to play too, but they cancelled (their NYC shows seem to still be happenning though).

My "day" started with a mix of witty banter and powerviolence brutality from Iron Lung, the first of what would be several pits of the evening. The duo are bulldozer-strength despite their numbers, and incited stage dives & pits despite the early hour. After a set from the dependably great Innumerable Forms (though we need some new mat'l gentlemen!), which featured Justin of Mind Eraser backed by Mammoth Grinder, Extortion took the stage to play a fastball of a set to a highly responsive (and stagedive-y) crowd. The band's clean tone fast-core was great, and the band delivered a more powerful set than at Maryland Deathfest... possibly due to the lack of barrier?

Citizens Arrest followed Extortion. It was the NYC hardcore greats' last set in the foreseeable future, and the fans at Chaos in Tejas were definitely more receptive than the MDF bunch (also, barrier?). The show resembled the band's showing at Knitting Factory in December with plenty of stage dives, dancing, and general mayhem. Many of the dancing few were from band's themselves, so it was awesome to see members of great bands going apeshit just like the rest of us. Awesome set.

Citizens Arrest
Chaos in Tejas

Autopsy headlined the evening, sitting comfortably in the middle ground between wide-eyed maniac and perfectly executed death metal veterans. The band played material from their latest Macabre Eternal, as well as earlier material during their hour+ set. From the moment that the band's intro music came on, the crowd was pressed up against each other in the front rows, with the audience swaying from side to side and front to back in the humidity. It was hot, but not hot enough for me to take my eyes off of Autopsy. Awesome set.

During Autopsy I poked my head into the Emo's indoor room where a sparsely populated crowd were enjoying Lower Dens (catch them on tour with Cass McCombs). I enjoyed the air-conditioning.

Chaos in Tejas Day One pictures are HERE and HERE. Our first set from Day Two (all from Emo's) continue below...

Tragedy

No rest for the wicked. After a grueling weekend of heavy music at Maryland Deathfest (pictures of day 1 HERE, day two HERE, day three HERE, and day four HERE), I am looking forward to a mix of punk, hardcore, metal, crust, d-beat, and indie at Chaos in Tejas in Austin this week! Kicking off on Thursday (June 2nd) the four day festival features appearances from tons notables, day shows, after parties, and in-stores, some for free. Swing down for a blow by blow breakdown of what you should look for every day at the multi-venue music fest.

Chaos

Thursday, June 2

Ah the start of the festival.... fresh legs and feet, and a hunger for tons of good bands. Thursday will sate your hunger too, as there are tons of great hardcore/metal shows to choose from. Shows tonight happen on both stages at Emo's, both stages at Red 7, at the Mohawk, Beauty Bar, Beerland and the Broken Neck.

Despite the high profile cancellation of Killing Joke at Emo's outdoor, CIT bounced back and added Cro-Mags to an already awesome lineup of rare appearances from strong>Asta Kask (Swedish d-beat), D-Clone (a rare show from these Japanese hardcore monsters), Veins (featuring Mark McCoy from Charles Bronson/Das Oath as well as Ian from Copremesis/Castevet), Double Negative (North Carolinian hardcore greats who released the awesome Daydreamnation last year), Vile Gash (brutal hardcore on Youth Attack), Japan'sThe Slowmotions, and NYC's Cult of Youth (dark folk with a great new LP on Sacred Bones) and Crazy Spirit (excellent hardcore with members of Perdition).

Thankfully, I can use my wristband from Emo's to hit up Red 7, right around the corner, where an awesome metal show will clash with an awesome garage show on the two stages. Finnish doomers Hooded Menace will headline on stage with Denmark's Undergang, crusty death metallers Acephalix (mems of the amazing Vastum), more death metal from Bone Sickness, and local death and rollers Mammoth Grinder. Meanwhile, the second stage will feature The Spits, the Arrivals, Shellshag, TV Ghost, and others. All of this means that I'll probably miss Converge/Title Fight/Touche Amore/Trap Them/Burning Love/the Menzingers at Mohawk and How I Quit Crack/The Indicator Dogs at Beauty Bar. At least I can end the night right with Tragedy and Origin of M at Broken Neck as part of an after-party. Yikes!

Tragedy by Konstantin Sergeyev
Tragedy

Tragedy (not to be confused with the Bee Gees cover band who just announced a residency at Brooklyn Bowl) completed a round of dates, Maryland Deathfest included, at Europa in Brooklyn Tuesday night with fellow MDF-ers Citizens Arrest, Night Birds, and Teargas (who played Europa a few days earlier with Doom). Pictures from the Tuesday show adorn this post.

Tragedy, Citizens Arrest, and Teargas fly down to Austin to play Chaos in Tejas this week. There they share a lineup with Autopsy, Mind Eraser, Omegas, Capitalist Casualties, and many others. Tickets for some shows are still available.

Citizens Arrest
Maryland Death Fest

After a three days of mayhem (pictures from day 1 HERE, day 2 HERE, and day 3 HERE) featuring sets from Neurosis, Doom, Lack of Interest, Voivod, Extortion, Aura Noir, and tons of notable others, Maryland Deathfest came to a close on Sunday with another full of performances capped by a headlining outdoor set from the reactivated Coroner, their first US appearance in 20 years.

Later that night, the true close to MDF was led by Ghost, whose set was tight and fun visually, but did not impress me as much as the hype suggests (decide for yourself on June 1st at the Studio). The remainder of my day was filled with pretty much every other band on the bill, except for Visceral Disgorge and Doubled Over who I missed in favor of much needed meals. My favorites of the day go to the foul death metallers Dead Congregation and Repugnant, the always awesome Citizens Arrest (who play Europa with another MDF alum, Tragedy, tonight), the energetic Skinless and the over the top goregrind of Last Days of Humanity.

Omar Souleyman at MHoW last year (more by Lori Baily)
Omar Souleyman

Syrian musician Omar Souleyman is returning to the states this summer and has added a June 12th show at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Ali Shaker. That NYC gig is in addition to previously announced dates at Bonnaroo, Chaos in Tejas and the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Tickets to the Brooklyn show go on AmEx presale Wednesday morning, and then on general sale Friday (4/15).

In related news, Austin festival Chaos In Tejas has made some major moves recently, adding Baroness, Citizens Arrest, Crystal Antlers, The Donkeys, Burning Love, and Trap Them to the fold and losing one band, Low Threat Profile. To pick up tickets for individual shows or a pass for the whole event, head to the Chaos in Tejas page.

Chaos in Tejas is one of the stops on the Converge/Burning Love/Trap Them tour which hits Santos on May 25th. Tickets for the NYC show are on sale.

Tragedy at Studio B in 2009 (photo by Konstantin Sergeyev)
Tragedy

Tragedy will return to NYC, their first show since playing the now-defunct Studio B in 2009, to play Europa on May 31st with the recently reunited Citizens Arrest, Teargas (who also play Europa with Doom/Drop Dead), and Night Birds. Tickets are on sale.

The NYC date is in addition to Tragedy's appearance at Maryland Deathfest, which recently lost Goatsnake & Destroyer 666, and added Ghost & Nunslaughter. Tickets are still available for that too.

Citizens Arrest meanhile is in the studio recording new songs, Ted Leo included. They've been posting videos to prove it (here and here). The Brooklyn gig is their only upcoming show at the moment. They were supposed to be heading to Canada this week, but then they posted this:

"Unfortunately, Citizens Arrest will not be playing in Toronto on March 12 due to circumstances beyond our control. Sincere apologies to our fans in Canada who purchased tickets. We look forward to playing in Toronto and Montreal later this year if possible."

Citizens Arrest

There were a considerable amount of "thank you"s and "it's an honor"s peppered in between hyper blasts and vocal grunts at Knitting Factory. The reunited Citizens Arrest played the Brooklyn venue on Friday (12/17), and then one more show at Kung Fu Necktie in Philadelphia the next night. It wasn't their first outing thought - they played a surprise show on Long Island on 12/4/10, but it was their first with Ted Leo back on guitar (Ted was on tour during the Long Island show).

Mind Eraser and Asshole Parade also played Knitting Factory as part of a helluva of a triple bill. All three bands killed, though both cXa and Mind Eraser were jawdropping. More pictures and video from Knitting Factory, as well as video from Kung Fu Necktie is below...

Citizens Arrest in Garden City (more at The Trashman's Reader)
Citizen's Arrest

Though Ted Leo is currently on the road with Ted Leo & The Pharmacists (they played The Champ in Leoyne, PA that night), the rest of Citizens Arrest (cXa) played their first reunion show on Saturday (12/4) as a special guest at Distort NY 2010 in Garden City, NY. cXa's appearance was unannounced at the Long Island show, which also featured performances from Capital, No Tolerance, The Men, Nomos, and Concrete Cross.

Ted Leo didn't play with Citizens Arrest Saturday, and he didn't play with Yo La Tengo this Hanukkah either. However, he will join his current project, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, at Terminal 5 with The New Pornographers tonight (12/6). Tickets are still available.

Citizens Arrest (with Ted Leo) will play the sold-out Knitting Factory on 12/17 with Mind Eraser and Asshole Parade. cXa also play Kungfu Necktie in Philly one night later.

The Citizens Arrest setlist from the Long Island show is below, along with video of the band playing "Pressure's On".

Continue reading "Citizens Arrest played a surprise show (without Ted Leo who plays Terminal 5 tonight)"

Tickets are on sale for the Citizens Arrest reunion show happening at Knitting Factory on December 17th. And the show is now one of three known dates. The band will also play Philadelphia x2 the next day. First, an all ages show at Kung-Fu Necktie (tickets) and later a 21+ show at the same venue (tickets).

Ted Leo of CITIZENS ARREST (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Ted Leo

Citizens ArrestAfter months of talk (and practice sessions), the word is finally out via Hardcore Gig Volume: "Citizens Arrest (reunion) / Mind Eraser @ Knitting Factory, Brooklyn on Friday December 17th. Ticket info coming soon." For the unaware, Citizens Arrest was....

...a New York-based band that existed from 1989 to 1991 and reformed in 2010. The group often blended hardcore punk, Grindcore and Powerviolence styles. Their main inspiration in the early days of the band were from Boston area hardcore from the 1980s like DYS and SSD. They also derived influence from early Powerviolence pioneers - [Wiki]
The reunion will include the original lineup of: DARYL KAHAN, JANIS CHAKARS, JOSEPH MARTIN, PATRICK WINTER, and TED LEO. Yes, that is Ted Leo of Ted Leo & The Phramacists fame and Daryl Kahan of Born Against/Funebrarum/Disma fame. Not sure whether Ted Leo will sing this time around. The band explains the past and present lineups like this:
1988-1990:
VOCALS: DARYL KAHAN (DRUMS ON DEMO)
GUITAR: JANIS CAKARS
VOCALS: TED LEO (DEMO)
BASS: JOSEPH MARTIN
DRUMS: PATRICK WINTER

2010:
VOCALS: DARYL KAHAN
GUITAR: JANIS CHAKARS
GUITAR: TED LEO
BASS: JOSEPH MARTIN
DRUMS: PATRICK WINTER

Stay tuned for more info, dates, etc.

Speaking of the supremely BRUTAL Disma, the new-ish five piece has joined on as support for the previously announced Hour of 13 / The Gates of Slumber show happening 10/16 at Union Pool . As previously discussed, the show will be Hour of 13's North American debut. Disma supported Immolation at The Studio at Webster Hall in July. The band is currently working on material for release on Profound Lore, but have a Limited Edition 7" in The Manifestation on the way via Necroharmonic Productions.
