Citysol

On July 10-12, 2009, Solar One, NYC's first green energy, arts and education center, will present Citysol, a celebration of urban sustainability and creativity in a mini music and arts festival.
The intial lineup for Citysol's free Saturday, July 11th concert has been updated. Full schedule of bands, with more info about the three-day NYC event, below...

Continue reading "Citysol 2009 (July 10-12) - full lineup (Dead Prez, Shilpa Ray, Fiasco, So So Glos, Rachel Trachtenburg, more...)"

Shilpa Ray @ Santos (more by Faith-Ann Young)
Shilpa Ray

We already knew that Fiasco is one of the band's playing Citysol 09 on July 11th at Stuyvesant Cove Park in NYC (23rd St in Manhattan - all the way east). The confirmed lineup for that free show also includes Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers, Love Like Deloreans, Hi Red Center and Schwervon!.

The annual environmental festival runs from July 10th-12th at Stuy Cove Park with the concert day being the Saturday. Like last year, Digiwaxx will be curating the fest's hip-hop/funk lineup. We helped out with the whole lineup in 2007.

Fiasco will also be at Citysol's pre-fest youth benefit concert at Solar One (same location) on Saturday, June 13th.

The benefit concert on June 13th was conceived and curated by [Citysol's] 18-year-old high school intern, Corinne Monaco. The other confirmed bands on the bill are Starscream, Run Time Error, The Mighty Handful, Consumer Feedback, The Sediment Club, The Whisky Crusaders and Lorrain and Her Demons.
Fiasco is playing another show that same night at the Market Hotel with Mika Miko, the Strange Boys and Coathangers.

It'll be Shilpa Ray's second year in a row at Citysol -- she also played the 2008 fest. This year she'll also be playing the Sly Stone tribute at Castle Clinton just a fest days after on July 16th, and a just-announced show at Southpaw on July 1st.. Her May Wednesdays residency at Pianos continues on the 20th and 27th of this month.

The Stuyvesant Cove Park is not to be confused with the Stuyvesant Town Oval, which is hosting its own free shows throughout the summer. The schedule for that series includes Kaki King, Jay Reatard, the Budos Band (who played Citysol in 2007) and more.

Videos from last year's fest, with upcoming Fiasco tour dates (including one at a new space - with a familiar name - Shea Stadium) below...

Fiasco @ Death By Audio (more by Leia Jospe)
Fiasco

Fiasco is playing the "Citysol Festival @ Stuyvesant Cove Park" in NYC in July, though despite the July 7th date they are currently listing on their MySpace, I can now confirm that the festival will happen from July 10th-12th. love like deloreans are also on the music part of the bill (July 11th). Stay tuned for more information on the annual free, outdoor, solar-powered show.

DAn Deacon @ McCarren Pool

It was announced on Friday that Dan Deacon would play Citysol on Saturday. The last-minute announcement had to wait until after the Thursday night Devo show at McCarren Pool that Dan opened (June 26, 2008). I would have assumed that the reason Dan could play Citysol so easily was partly because he was already in town. Just the opposite. Dan actually flew to Atlanta for a Friday night show after the Thursday night McCarren show, only to have to come right back to NYC to play the free solar-powered festival the very next day. That's where something went wrong....

The idea of putting on an outdoor concert in New York City powered exclusively by solar panels is a clever and necessary one for these energy-troubled times. One could excuse the organizers of the 3rd annual Citysol music festival if their activism overshadowed the music on hand; on the contrary, they presented a diverse bill of performances that ranged from exotic (Burkina Electric, featuring percssionist/composer Lukas Ligeti) to mind-blowing (MC Blitz the Ambassador, with electronics, bass and a full brass section). Headliner Dan Deacon was a no-show thanks to some airline screwup that sent his equipment to Cincinnati; after such a full plate, I can't imagine anyone was all that disappointed. [Feast of Music]
Were you disappointed?

You saw Zach's pics of Devo. The rest of the ones he took during Dan's set are below....

Dan Deacon @ McCarren Pool, Brooklyn, NY - June 26, 2008 (thepiratehat)
Deacon @ McCarren

Dan Deacon returned to McCarren Pool in Brooklyn last night - this time as the opener for Devo and Tom Tom Club (June 26, 2008).

The curfew is 10pm at McCarren, so Dan had to go on at 6:30 pm. That was 2.5 hours before Devo took the stage at their early-for-a-headliner start time of 9pm (yes, that also means Devo only played for an hour). It goes without saying that the majority of the people who went to the show last night missed Dan's set. As you can see from the picture though, a decent amount of people actually did make it on time too.

And now that it's over, it can be officially announced that Dan Deacon is in fact the secret guest at Citysol on Saturday. There was a slight change in set times though. Dan will be headlining aka playing AFTER Ecstatic Sunshine. Also, it actually was supposed to be DD AND Dirty Projectors on the bill until DP had to cancel (Dan was not their replacement). More info at Citysol's site (P.S. it is FREE).

Citysol

The four-day Citsol festival kicks off in NYC Thursday night with a free show at Solar One. It looks like this:

6:00 - Ryan Glass aka Slim Dixon
6:45 - Apollo Heights
7:30 - All Out Collective (AOK)
8:30 - Care Bears on Fire
Dirty Projectors were supposed to play the Saturday event, but "unfortunately due to other conflicts the Dirty Projectors will not be able to play their scheduled time slot". There is a secret guest playing the Saturday show though, and The Acorn were also added to the bill.

Now Dirty Projectors' only free NYC show this summer is the one they're playing at South Street Seaport. Read the Citysol site for a listing of all of this weekend's festivities.

"On the grass-roots level, cost has always been a concern for touring bands. But the nearly $2,500 in gas Garcia and his two bandmates would have had to pay just to make it to Vancouver, Canada, and back was too much to overcome." [an Associated Press article]
Strangely the article doesn't even touch on sustainable touring and whether that might cut down costs while being friendly to the environment at the same time.

In the above picture, Les Savy Fav's Tim Harrington (having just stepped off Citysol's solar-powered stage) is sitting on top of These are Powers' vegetable oil-powered van.

Last year I helped put together the music portion of Solar One's NYC Citysol festival. This year the honor went to Alec Hanley Bemis of Cantaloupe and Brassland Records. I think he did a really good job.....

Citysol

JUNE 26 - opening night w/ Care Bears on Fire, A-OK Collective

JUNE 28 - all day music festival w/ Dirty Projectors, Ecstatic Sunshine, No Surrender, Shilpa Ray (Beat the Devil), Burkina Electric, So Percussion, Selan and Blitz the Ambassador. (and maybe more TBA)

That makes two free Dirty Projectors shows this summer because they're playing the Seaport in August too (with their Domino labelmates White Williams).

Les Savy Fav played last year. Les Savy Fav are playing their next show at Highline Ballroom in NYC on May 21st.

Speaking of Citysol, here's an MP3 of Les Savy Fav covering Superchunk at their Citysol performance last summer. Three live MP3's from a 2005 show in Atlanta too. And speaking of Les Savy Fav live, the next NY Magazine weird event will be at Highline Ballroom on May 21st with Zach Galifianakis (again) AND Les Savy Fav. No ticket info yet.

Les Savy Fav's new live album that was recorded at Bowery Ballrom and also includes a lot of covers, will be released at the end of this month. All dates below.....

the Budos Band @ Citysol, NYC - July 14, 2007
Budos Band @ Citysol

Tonight (July 26, 2007) is the free Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings concert in Castle Clinton - a seated outdoor venue (where Drive by Truckers just played), but I doubt many people will be staying in their seats - well, actually I don't know. It will definitely be weird if security trys to keep it a truly seated concert. What do you think? Note: "Two free tickets per person will be distributed at the Castle on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 5:00pm on the day of the show."

And as I've said many times, Sharon's backing band The Dap Kings also now back Amy Winehouse, and share members (and a label) with The Budos Band. The Budos Band played the free BrooklynVegan/Solar One Citysol concert a few weekends ago - the one Les Savy Fav headlined. And as previously mentioned, despite not a ton of people showing up for their early set time (relatively speaking), the show was a funky good time. The Budos Band's next show is at Joe's Pub on August 9th - I hope they can all fit on the stage. More photos & tour dates, below...

Continue reading "SHARON JONES & the Dap Kings tonight, BUDOS BAND, Citysol pics, 2007 Tour Dates (Joe's Pub)"

These are Power's set time was 3:30 in the afternoon. People of all ages were running around Stuyvesant Cove Park at that time, and the Budos Band had just finished an awesome, anyone-friendly, funky set of afrobeat that had hippies dancing around, and had even the most random passerbys pausing their day to check out the sweet sounds coming from the horn-heavy collective. Senior citizens were taking in the sunshine, and the view of the East River. Moms and kids were exploring what was to be had in the Citysol 'green' flea market - the scene was far from one you might find at a late night Todd P show in Greenpoint, and I was a little scared at what might happen when this started blaring through the speakers.

These are Powers @ Citysol

Well, it turned out okay. Granted, a few people may have been scared away - or at least retreated back under the shelter that doubled as the Lucid Food Cafe, but I think most in attendance couldn't help, but be drawn in by These are Power's intense 'ghost punk' sound, and their dynamic, spastic, and high-energy stage show that was led most noticeably by front-woman Anna Barie (Knife Skills, Fxxxing Lion). Check 'em out if u have a chance...

Menomena @ South Street Seaport, NYC- July 13, 2007 (CRED)
Menomena @ South Street Seaport

One obvious limitation we faced when booking the Citysol show was that we couldn't have any bands that were already locked in to play the Pitchfork Festival happening the same weekiend in Chicago. It meant we couldn't get local favorites like Professor Murder and Oxford Collapse on the bill, and though Gza really wanted to perform Liquid Swords while overlooking the East River, he just couldn't get out of his prior obligation (I kid). One band sort of did play both though - that's because the South Street Seaport portion of Citysol was Friday night and Menomena weren't playing the Pitchfork Fest until Sunday.

Menomena @ Pitchfork Festival 2007, Chicago - July 15, 2007 (CRED)
Menomena @ Pitchfork Festival

Though I was running around a lot, what I heard of Menomena at the Seaport sounded great. I obviously wasn't at Pitchfork, but Metromix says Menomena's set there was "significantly weakened by poor sound". Also on Pitchfork - The Daily Heave says that "Professor Murder really did try, but sadly was stuck on the third stage of doom", and Rachel reports that she likes Oxford Collapse "more than mastadons but they stuck the oxford collapse in the weird little fenced off corner stage area and I was NOT going back there.".......

Oxford Collapse are playing McCarren Pool this Sunday (7/22) with Annuals and Band of Horses.

As I try to catch up after this exhausting weekend, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who helped make Citysol a complete success and all around good time. And if you were there, I hope you enjoyed it more than this kid...

Citysol

...hopefully instead, you enjoyed it as much as these kids...

Citysol 2006

Citysol (July 12, 13, 14, 15 - NYC) would not have been possible without the amazing effors of Solar One's own Jenn Su. You might have read the interview with her on Gothamist the other day. Maybe you were standing next to her on the Brooklyn Bridge at (over) the Boredoms show. Gothamist asked her: "Please share your strangest 'only in New York' story", and she answered,

I'll stick to the postive and recent -- working all day Saturday and then deciding last minute to bike like mad to the Brooklyn Bridge to catch the Boredoms' 77BOADRUM from the bridge -- watched it through a lane of traffic while tourist couples and families walked by behind the crowd with "wtf?! is going on down there" looks on their faces -- bizarro, but totally worth it + only in New York!
I asked Jenn to list 10 more reasons (that aren't Menomena, Beat the Devil, Les Savy Fav, Land of Talk, The Besnard Lakes, O'Death, OCDJ, The Budos Band, These are Powers or Franpollis) people should come to Citysol, and here's what she said (in no particular order):
  1. Interactive art installations -- including solar powered instruments, the 62's electric go carts, t-shirt sculptures, arctic projections and so much more!
  2. Lucid Food Cafe -- yum food sourced from all within 150 mile radius (local = less CO)
  3. Learn about water quality issues, congestion pricing, solar in NYC, and climate change initiatives
  4. Buy a beer and OFFSET 83 pounds of CO2
  5. The East River
  6. Sunrise get togethers
  7. GAMES / Workshops on Sunday (build your own wind turbine, ride go-carts, make kites out of plastic bags)
  8. Green Power Sign Up Drive -- bring your electric bill, switch to green power and drink free Brooklyn Brewery beer
  9. green flea marketplace!
  10. SUNSHINE.

Beat The DevilAt this point many people are probably thinking that "Citysol" is merely a free Les Savy Fav show happening this Saturday at Stuyvesant Park in NYC. WRONG! Citysol is actually four days long, and also includes Friday night at South Street Seaport.

How will this week's Seaport concert be different from the ones in weeks past? Well, besides the fact that this is the only week that Beat the Devil & Menomena are playing, there really isn't any difference. BrooklynVegan & Solar One (Citysol) are just helping "present" the 'River to River' show - aka counteracting all evil associated with the 'Friday the 13th' date which in turn will guarantee harmony and 'good times' for all by the water. Oh, and there will also be a table where you can "switch to a green energy package with ConEdison Solutions", so bring your electric bill.

Also coming up at South Street Seaport....

SuicideJuly 13 - Menomena, Beat the Devil
July 20 - Bishop Allen, Rock Plaza Central
July 27 - SUICIDE

The ubiquitous electronic sounds emanating from many of today's most acclaimed indie music performers owe much of their art to the often troubled group known as Suicide, aka Alan Vega, on vocals, and Martin Rev on keyboard. The drummer-less, rhythm-machine-driven, guitar-free duo was effectively the world's first art-rock, synth-pop band, but it has taken nearly 30 years for the band to received its warranted props.
Last year they had the New York Dolls - this year SUICIDE

Aug 3 - A Night of Billie Holiday Remixed and Reimagined
Aug 10 - Au Revoir Simone, Metronomy
Aug 17 - The National, The Forms, Takka Takka
Aug 24 - Camera Obscura
Aug 31 - Battles & DEERHUNTER

Coincidentally, I took this picture of Les Savy Fav playing Guitar Hero at SXSW this year. I'm glad I waited four months to post it...

Les Savy Fav playing Guitar Hero @ SXSW 2007

Jerry asked:
If you had to select a LSF song to be in Guitar Hero III, what would that be? Also, a non LSF song.

Seth Les Savy Fav answered:
I'd have to go with either "Pills" or "Adopduction" off of Go Forth OR "The Sweat Descends" from Inches. "Pills" has a lot of variety - both chords and single-note progression. "Adopduction" would fit nicely in the top 2 tiers of the game - it's not a face melter, but it has it's chops. "The Sweat Descends" is just guitar mania and a crowd-pleaser. As far as non LSF tunes, I'd say early Metallica - preferably "Master of Puppets" for its scope and orchestration.

Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav @ McCarren Pool

Jenn asked:
Like Live Earth, Citysol is a "green" event. I was wondering what you guys thought of Live Earth, and if you were hurt at all that Madonna chose Gogol Bordello to play with her instead of Les Savy Fav.

Tim Les Savy Fav answered:
Who's Madonna? That chick who kidnaps African kids or do you mean that good looking chick from the 80s?
