Layne Staley

"The mother of deceased Alice in Chains lead singer Layne Staley has sued her son's former bandmates, claiming they cut her out of royalties owed on the band's hits.

Staley's mother Nancy McCallum contends the surviving members of Alice in Chains owe her half of the money due Staley - about 16 percent of the hard rock band's income. According to the lawsuit, the band has attempted to cut her out of any further payments. [seattlepi {via)]

The Staley-less Alice in Chains meanwhile are on the road and play the MMRBQ at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ on Saturday (5/18) with Cheap Trick and fellow grunge representatives Soundgarden (who we just caught in Jersey earlier this month).

Later in the summer Alice in Chains join Jane's Addiction for a "Rockstar Energy" tour that hits CT, NJ and NY among other places. All of those dates are listed below...

Iron Maiden at Madison Square Garden in 2010 (more by Justina Villaneuva)
Iron Maiden

IRON MAIDEN are back on the road this summer with a series of Arena, Amphitheatre and Festival shows in the U.S.A. and Canada, opening in Charlotte, NC, U.S.A. on June 21, and finishing in Houston, TX, on Aug 18 (dates listed below), to be followed by further dates around the World in 2013. The MAIDEN ENGLAND WORLD TOUR will closely mirror, in terms of production and content, the original 1988 concert video of the same name, shot on the "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son Tour".
Iron Maiden will play shows with Alice Cooper on some dates and Coheed & Cambria on others. Look for Alice Cooper at both NYC area shows: June 28th at Jones Beach and July 2nd at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. Maiden will release details on fan presales in the near future via their website, but ticketing info is otherwise unavailable.

Alice Cooper is also playing Bonnaroo this year.

"So me, Riff, and Elyse saw Soundgarden at Jones Beach. It was an awesome show! The whole band can still fucking rip." - veganaction

Soundgarden

It was a generational mix of fans as old classic rock loving men mixed with metal heads, Gen X and Gen Y'ers as the 90's came back alive and everyone remembered when grunge was king. Opening with "Searching with my Good Eye Closed," Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, Ben Shepherd reinvoked the power and thunder that fans have loved them for all these years. It was a trip down memory lane as the band are reintroducing themselves with their back catalogue of singles, B-sides and very deep early cuts and in a set list that appealed to the casual listener to the hardcore fan, Soundgarden were not ready to play any of the new material they have been working on and they didn't need to, they stuck to the working wheel of high octane, dark and murky rock and roll. "Jones Beach, sorry for the wait! We got some new songs but you won't hear any tonight, this is an old song" a bearded Chris Cornell told the crowd right before kicking into "Jesus Christ Pose" -[Officially a Yuppie]
Soundgarden played two NYC area shows over the weekend with Coheed & Cambria. They hit July 8th at Prudential Center in Newark and July 9th at Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh, NY. Their set consisted mainly of material off Louder Than Love, Badmotorfinger, and Superunknown, with a few other cuts as well. The above review and photos in this post come from Jones Beach. We also have setlists and videos from both below.

Last night, Sunday night (7/10), Coheed & Cambria opened for Soundgarden at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, Mass, but without their bassist who was arrested at the venue for robbing a pharmacy earlier that day!

Soundgarden is currently touring the east coast, and will play upcoming dates in Phildelphia and Atlantic City (with Mars Volta) in the coming days. Full tour schedule (which now includes a headlining appearance at Voodoo in New Orleans), with more pictures (though none of Coheed), videos and setlists below...

Coheed bassist

"Just hours before his band was to open for Soundgarden on Sunday, the bass player for Coheed and Cambria, the alternative rock band from Nyack, N.Y., was arrested on charges he robbed a pharmacy in Massachusetts to get prescription painkillers, the Associated Press reported.

The police said the bassist, Mike Todd, entered the Walgreens pharmacy in Attleboro, Mass., on Sunday afternoon and showed the pharmacists a note on his telephone claiming he had a bomb. Mr. Todd, who is 30, was said to have demanded six bottles of OxyContin and then caught a cab to the Comcast Center in Mansfield, Mass., where his band was to play the opening set before Soundgarden took the stage. He was arrested at the concert hall before the show and charged with armed robbery and possession of a controlled substance, the police said. The band played without him." [NY Times]

The band have found a new bassist which means the Jones Beach show on Saturday was Mike Todd's last.

Update: Pictures from the Jones Beach show (though none of Coheed), HERE.

People at Williamsburg Waterfront last year (more by Benjamin Lozovsky)
Williamsburg Waterfront

This summer's Williamsburg Waterfront concert season begins this weekend with a free show on Saturday (6/11) (5:30pm doors). For what it's worth, that show is Coheed and Cambria, Adrian Belew Power Trio and Tigers Jaw, but it is free. It's also one of three currently announced free shows (there will be five free shows total, one of which will be classical music). The other two announced free events are Eugene Mirman and Pretty Good Friends (Patton Oswalt will be one of those friends!) and special musical guests They Might Be Giants on July 29, and a children's show with Moey's Music Party and Story Pirates (who recently hosted a benefit) on June 19 at noon.

Ticketed shows include Death From Above 1979, Death Cab for Cutie, Sonic Youth, Bright Eyes, Thievery Corporation (with Dam-Funk & Master Blazter and Raphael Saadiq opening), TV on the Radio, Fleet Foxes and more. Check out the full lineup with openers listed below...

Soundgarden

Over the past few months, we've been busy jamming, writing and hanging out together - exploring the creative aspect of being Soundgarden. It feels great. We have some cool new songs that we are going to record very soon. Thank you for all of the support!

Loudest of Love,

Ben, Chris, Kim and Matt

Until we hear that new material, we'll have to either settle for Live on I-5 (a new live album recorded in 1996) or catch Soundgarden on the road this summer! The reunited Seattle band will hit the road for select North American dates with support from Coheed & Cambria on some dates and The Mars Volta on others.

Coheed & Cambria (who is also scheduled to play a free show at Williamsburg Waterfront) will join Soundgarden at both NYC-area dates, July 8th at Prudential Center in Neark and July 9th at Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh, NY. Tickets for Prudential Center and Jones beach go on Fan Presale at 9AM and 7AM PDT (aka noon and 10AM EST) respectively, while regular sale for both Prudential Center and Jones Beach kicks off at 10AM on 5/13. They also play Mohegan Sun in CT on July 6th and the Borgata in Atlantic City on July 14th. All dates are listed below.

The Mars Volta play the Atlantic City date, but neither of the NYC-area shows, so maybe they'll announce their own NYC show soon? Omar and Cedric last played NYC together in March.

In related news, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden recently contributed guitar to the new record by A Storm of Light, As The Valley of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade. Check out that track/a recent interview with Josh Graham.

All tour dates, some with Queens of the Stone Age and Meat Puppets too, are listed below...

Williamsburg Waterfront last year (more by Benjamin Lozovsky)
WW

As I previously wrote, "there will be concerts at the Williamsburg Waterfront this summer. In fact, the plan is to have 10 ticketed shows and 5 free shows." And, "The five free concert dates are still TBD, but one will be of a classical/philharmonic nature, and one will be geared towards kids. The free shows may or may not be on Sundays or even on weekends, and they will definitely not have anything to do with Jelly."

Since then three ticketed shows have been announced: Kid Cudi on Wednesday, July 6th (on sale), Death Cab For Cutie/Frightened Rabbit on Tuesday, August 2nd (on sale 5/6, but a presale starts 4/29), and Sonic Youth/Wild Flag on Friday, August 12th (on sale Friday). Seven more announcements to come.

Service Charge-free tickets are available at the Best Buy Theater Box Office (44th and Broadway in Manhattan) and at Sound Fix Records (44 Berry St. at North 11th St. in Brooklyn).

Two of the five free shows have also now been announced. The first is nothing like what Jelly would have booked: Coheed and Cambria, Adrian Belew Power Trio, and Tigers Jaw play the Williamsburg Waterfront on Saturday, June 11th. The second is sort of like what Jelly might have booked, but more closely resembles what you'd get at Celebrate Brooklyn: Eugene Mirman "& Pretty Good Friends Featuring Kristen Schaal & Many Surprise Guests" open for They Might Be Giants at Wiliamsburg Waterfront on Friday, July 29th.

Assuming TMBG won't be playing a kids set, and that the comedians will tell a few dirty jokes, the free kids show announcement is still to come, as is the classical concert date info (which means just one more completely unknown free lineup to come). Both announced free shows open their doors at 5:30pm.

All five shows, ticketed and free, are part of the "2011 T-MOBILE WILLIAMSBURG WATERFRONT CONCERT SERIES PRESENTED BY OSA" and "supported by Onitsuka Tiger, Vitamin Water, and Brooklyn Brewery."

All five shows are listed in an easy-to-read format below....

Steve of Torche, riding the (fat) waves (more by Justina Villanueva)
Torche

Over the coming weeks, we'll be announcing details of some of our (many) day & night shows happening in Austin during SXSW this year. Emo's on March 17th is the first of these shows, and mark my words, it will be utter pandemonium. Proof? The first announcement of more than twelve bands slated for the free gig is Torche. Stay tuned for more announcements, but until then, save the date.

Later that night we move over to Club DeVille for an official showcase featuring Serena Maneesh, Califone and more TBA. Then on Friday, we've also just revealed, that we'll be hanging out at Club DeVille again for another day party with Lucero and many more TBA there too.

The Wednesday BV Day Party is one of a handful of Austin dates for Torche before the band takes a breather, only to reignite for a string of dates with Coheed & Cambria and Circa Survive that include May 26th at Rumsey Playfield (aka Central Park Summerstage). Ticket info is forthcoming.

In related news, Torche will team up with Boris to domestically release Chapter Ahead Of Being Fake for Hydrahead. No word on an exact release date. Torche's Steve Brooks is getting his old band Floor back together. Robotic Empire will release a mega-mega-mega boxset for the band. Preorder it here.

A new-ish video for "King Beef" and full Torche dates are below.

Ronnie James Dio commands his drink order from the stage
Heaven and Hell

[Tony] Iommi credits his creativity for his undying love of riff writing, but his love for volume certainly plays a role, too.

"From day one, we were always louder than anyone," [Tony Iommi, guitarist for Heaven & Hell] said. "We certainly made sure no one could talk in our shows."

Iommi chuckles thinking about the early days

"We were always asked to turn it down," he remembered. "They'd tell us to turn it down or they wouldn't book us again. And unfortunately even now, and this is a sign of the times, there's a lot of restrictions on the sound... At one show in Bond, the limit was so low that I actually used only two (amplifier) cabinets of my eight. Bloody hell, I haven't used two cabinets since maybe the '60s." -[Boston Herald]

And according to field reports, volume was not an issue for the great Black Sabbath circa 1979 (AKA Heaven & Hell) along with the proggy hair-warriors of Coheed & Cambria at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden on Monday (8/26). As we pointed out in a previous post (that also has pictures from this show), Britney Spears was playing the larger room at MSG the same night.

The pair of bands are closing in on the end of their tour together, parting ways on august 29th when H&H will head down to Atlantic City (tickets) while C&C breaks off to Buffalo.

More pictures, some videos, the setlists from the earlier Chicago show, and all tour dates, below...

Heaven & Hell, aka Black Sabbath: The Dio Years, will hit the road with Coheed & Cambria for a 15 date summer tour, playing an NYC date at WaMu Theater at MSG (it's still called that?) on 8/25. Ticket info is currently unavailable.

C & C will accompany H & H throughout the US of A, except in Seattle, where they will be replaced by Neurosis... Neurosis instead of Coheed. Damn you Seattle.

Heaven & Hell recently dropped their first album in 17 years, The Devil You Know, which includes the single and the corresponding video for, "Bible Black" (below).

Neurosis recently played Roadburn (check out JJ Koczan's great blow by blow here) and are currently touring Europe. We recently interviewed Scott Kelly.

Coheed & Cambria have a few solo dates as well, including the sold-out Starland Ballroom on May 29th with Kylesa.

!!! is playing ACL 2009 (more by Chris Graham)
chk chk chk

"The 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival will showcase a diverse blend of acts both fresh and familiar at the eighth edition of the event in Zilker Park October 2-4. Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, and Beastie Boys are performing for the first time at the Festival, with Kings of Leon, Ben Harper and Relentless7, and Thievery Corporation returning to Zilker Park once again. John Legend, The Dead Weather, and The Levon Helm Band will also make their ACL Festival debut, while Austin's own Ghostland Observatory will no doubt deliver another memorable set for festival goers.

With over 130 artists on this year's bill, the list of acts awes at each note with the likes of Sonic Youth, Mos Def, Toadies, Flogging Molly, The B-52s, Lily Allen, Citizen Cope, Arctic Monkeys, The Decemberists, Coheed and Cambria, Andrew Bird, Girl Talk, and many more.

In the tradition of the TV show from which it was born, the Festival has always aimed to offer musical discovery for the fans. The 2009 lineup is rich with pop, country, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, indie rock, hip-hop, and gospel, to name a few, spanning cultures and countries from New Orleans to Venezuela to France."
The entire 2009 lineup is below...

Lollapalooza

"Though promoters around the country report strong early ticket sales for festivals and summer tours, the recession is causing jitters. This year Coachella, which has the most glamorous reputation of all American festivals, began selling tickets on layaway, and 18 percent of its customers took that option, Mr. Tollett said.

The proliferation of big festivals, like Bonnaroo near Nashville and Lollapalooza in Chicago, has not been without casualties. This year Langerado in Miami shut down, citing the economy. The Pemberton Festival in British Columbia is on hiatus after only one year, although its promoter, Live Nation, said the problem was permit delays." [NY Times]

With all the leaks of bands playing Lollapalooza this year, there are almost no surprises in the official lineup announcement, except maybe the Animal Collective DJ set... The whole thing below...

Kylesa @ Full Metal Texas, SXSW (more pics here)
Kylesa

Kylesa have scheduled ANOTHER pair of shows in the NYC area: May 27th at Maxwell's (tickets here) and Cake Shop on May 30th (yeah you read that right). That makes FIVE total NYC area shows that the Savannah crew has lined up in the month of May if you count their sold-out shows with Mastodon & Intronaut at MHOW and Irving Plaza and the one with Coheed & Cambria at Starland Ballroom. You officially have no excuse to miss 'em.

Kylesa is touring in support of their kick-ass new record Static Tensions, which includes "Said & Done" (above). Pitchfork dug it too.

Meanwhile, Kylesa drummer (one of them) Eric Hernandez's other project, Capsule, (who we profiled last year) have released a digital-only release entitled Tape + Demo + Tour. Check out the song "Just Three Lines" from that release (originally found on a short run, tour-only CD-R) at their myspace and pick it up at iTunes.

In addition, dig on the below videos that Capsule put together chronicling their show at The Fest 7 in Gainsville, FL.
