Brooklyn black metal band Krallice had been teasing a new album recently, and lo and behold, all of a sudden the entire thing is here. It's called Ygg huur, it's out digitally today, and will be out physically in the fall via Gilead Media. It follows 2012's Years Past Matter and on first listen feels a bit rawer/punkier than its predecessor. It's good stuff -- listen below.
Krallice have two shows coming up in their hometown of NYC this August. The first is August 13 at Trans-Pecos with Geryon and Andromorphus Rexalia. Tickets are on sale.
The following week they play a 10 PM set at The Stone on August 21, which is part of Krallice guitarist Mick Barr's residency at that venue from August 18-23. Check out the full schedule for that residency below. Directly after that ends, the next Stone residency is from another local experimental metal musician, Toby Driver.
Two of the dates in the residency have Mick playing with Chuck Bettis, who has his own Stone residency from December 15-20, the last day of which includes Mick and Krallice's Colin Marston.

"Manifest Blasphemy," the first track off of Split Red's Serious Heft, starts with a piercing trill. That's inventive shredder Brandon Seabrook making a guest appearance. And the invite alone shows how little regard these Philadelphians have for tropes. A lot of punky noise rockers formed in this millennium are content to sway to neutered, hand-me-down rhythms, skipping the eclecticism of the original artists as if they never actually heard them. Those bands play like they're trying to stay within a stencil. Split Red's canvas, on the other hand, is wide open. They're more than willing to let Seabrook spit sparks over their lurch. The result is Beefheart-ian, perking up Split Red's punk with an unbridled, avant-garde antagonism. It's unexpected, like seeing a hungry coyote running through a block of track homes. Notice received: Split Red do what they want.
The Seabrook-less Split Red are certainly up to snuff. Guitarists Stephen Buono and Travis Woodson often sound like they're landing a jet, fully utilizing one of the finest production jobs by Serious Heft producer (and very busy musician) Colin Marston. They're also fluent in skronk and bend-y bouts of discomfort, suggesting an education supplied by Shorty/U.S. Maple or even Eddie Hazel. Bassist Matt Engle and drummer Ricardo Lagomasino (also of Deleted Scenes and Many Arms) outline killer grooves before seeing how far away they can travel from the original idea while still keeping time. Singer Nebadon Adams is like an electronic ground. He's the listener's surrogate, the thing you lock on to when weathering the storm. He's cool, controlled, just a touch detached; maybe affecting that style to better sneak in revolutionary lyrics of civil disobedience under your guard.
And, all in all, "Manifest Blasphemy" rocks in that old noise rock way. Of course, they do it that way because they want to, not because they have to. Check out "Manifest Blasphemy" along with Serious Heft's album details below.
No tour dates announced at the moment, but you can catch Ricardo on the road with his band Deleted Scenes opening for The Life and Times (ex-Shiner). As discussed, that tour hits NYC on September 13 at Knitting Factory (tickets).

Members are consist of 3 vocals; the ugliest rock star Psychic Yamanashi whose voice is nothing but annoying. Another vocal is Death voice from wood cutter Mongoloid who is very manly with secret naive heart. Mysterious Opera voice from beastly monster Velladon. They are backed by 3 strings; Punk and Classic, Progressive, also by piano, twin guitars, base, broadcasting. Main drum is skillful Chikada famous of World's end girlfriend, and support drum is Tatsuya Yoshida from Ruins. There are Toyohito Yoshida from BOREDOMS as a guardian god.If you're not familiar, Japan's Vampillia are an extremely odd offshoot of the legendary noise/punk band Boredoms -- the anything-goes chaotic vibe is similar, but Vampillia focuses more heavily on pomp and theatricality. You can check out the thoroughly weird video they produced in advance of their upcoming SXSW performance below. They've also toured with the likes of Jarboe and Nadja; you can hear their excellent recorded collaboration with the latter below as well.

Vampillia will be returning to SXSW for the third time this year, and they'll be putting in a number of other live appearances during their time in the country as well. Three of them will be in New York City. First, they'll play at Silent Barn on March 8 alongside Mick Barr (playing a rare 'slow' solo set), Kevin Hufnagel, & MV Carbon. Two days later, they'll play Death By Audio on March 10, along with Colin Marston, Geryon, & Mossenek, which is Barr's collaboration with vocalist Chuck Bettis. (Mossenek have an upcoming release on American Tapes; they also have a full-length and a Japanese tour w/ Nadja and Vampillia in the works.) Since Geryon features both members of Krallice's rhythm section and both Marston and Barr hold down guitar spots in the band, their entire lineup will be performing...separately. How often does that happen?
Vampillia will put in one more NYC appearance after SXSW -- they're playing the Knitting Factory on March 16, along with Jungles From Red Bacteria Vacuum, Zarigani$, Happy, & Starmarie, as part of the "Japan Nite" tour (which also includes an appearance at Athens's Slingshot Festival). Tickets are available.
UPDATE: Vampillia also play NYC on March 7 at Trans-Pecos with Guardian Alien (ex-Liturgy drummer Greg Fox's band), G Lucas Crane and Brian Chase; and March 9 at Pianos with Leah Lazonick, Snowday, England in 1819, and Three Thousand Rivers.
Mick Barr also has a third NYC show coming up -- March 21 at Secret Project Robot, alongside Ornament & Total Life, both of which are offshoots of the experimental unit Growing.

Marston, shredding at Public Assembly last year (more by Jonathan McPhail)
Colin Marston is the hardest-working metal musician in New York City, which, to paraphrase The Big Lebowski, puts him in the running for hardest-working worldwide. Marston has released music with no fewer than four (crazy complex) bands during the past year-ish: Dysrhythmia, Krallice, Behold The Arctopus, and Gorguts, who recently played Hopscotch Fest and who joined Invisible Oranges on the September 3 edition of our East Village Radio show. Marston also released a little-noticed but amazing solo album under the name Indricothere earlier this year.
But all that evidently isn't enough for Marston, because he's released another Indricothere album directly to Bandcamp. Though past Indricothere albums have been solidly in his tech/prog-metal wheelhouse, his new effort XI travels substantially off his shred-beaten path. Even for a musician of his breadth, this new effort is a curveball...Marston has followed in Gorguts/Dysrhythmia bandmate Kevin Hufnagel's footsteps and released an entire album of textural music. There are no strings or drums on XI; if there are, they're not clearly discernible. We're treated instead to slow-shifting synths and shimmering textures; the chord progressions proceed gracefully, and with only a little of the tension that usually colors Marston's compositions.Stream XI in full below.

You had better have some big cojones to name your band A Fucking Elephant. The technical/progressive two-piece (bass/drums) are prepping to release their classily-titled Seven Inches of A Fucking Elephant, a two song effort that demonstrates the band's prowess as an instrumental powerhouse. At times AFE sound like they've studied the jaw-dropping skills of their recording engineer Colin Marston (the 7" was laid to tape at his A Thousand Caves studio) while others give glimpses of latter Bastard Noise. Though BTA have no tour dates on tap, Dysrhythmia (featuring Colin Marston) are currently touring their little (blackened) hearts out. Look for the band to hit Public Assmebly on 11/17 as part of a show with Loincloth and STATS (tickets).
