Boston Strangler at Acheron in 2012 (more by Sarja Hasan)
Boston Strangler

As is generally the case, there's a whole bunch of cool hardcore/punk shows in NYC in the coming months. Here's a rundown of upcoming local shows and tours passing through NYC that you might want to check out:

The excellent UK sludgy hardcore outfit Shrapnel are touring the US and will be landing in NYC for a matinee show at The Acheron on December 6 with their tourmates, DC's Red Death, and New Jersey mainstays Razorheads. It starts at 3 PM and Tickets for the all ages show will be $10 at the door. All dates are listed below.

The following Saturday (12/13), the Acheron will play host to a loaded Massachusetts-centric hardcore bill that will bring appropriately-named Boston-based HC rippers Boston Strangler to town. They'll be joined by fellow Massholes Waste Management, Peacebreakers, Oblivionation, Jock's Blood and Moron. Despite everyone being from the same state, this is actually a pretty varied bill as these things go, with the classicist approach of Boston Strangler, Waste Management's slower chug, and the surprisingly rangy (dare we say poppy) sound of Moron providing some great contrast. Tickets for that one are on sale now.

Just one week later, there will be yet another stacked hardcore show at Acheron on December 20. This one will feature Spain's Orden Mundial, who are also playing that previously-discussed Puce Mary show at Palisades a day earlier (tickets). They'll be joined by Philly crew Blank Spell, as well as locals Mommy and Pox. Tickets are on sale now. Both shows are part of the Spanish band's tour, and those dates are all listed below.

After you flip your calendar to 2015, head to Saint Vitus for more HC on January 1. This show will bring the great Austin band Glue together with local ragers Warthog and the post-punkish Gainesville crew Allergy. The lineup will be filled out by locals Nandas, and tickets are on sale now. Glue have that great, sludgy, groovy Texas sound on lock, Warthog's local reputation speaks for itself, and this should be a great show.

On January 4 at Palisades Montreal post-punk inflected band Proxy will take the stage with Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, who put out the great Stay Home LP earlier this year. They'll be joined by Pox, who are also playing that Orden Mundial show. Tickets for this show are not yet up, but they'll likely be available via Ticketfly.

Long Island's Backtrack will rep New York Hardcore at the Every Time I Die show at Webster Hall on December 12. Also on that show are The Ghost Inside, Architects UK and Hundredth. Tickets are still available.

CIS

Long Island melodic hardcore crew Crime in Stereo are playing the mostly pop-punk Glamour Kills Holiday Fest at Webster Hall on December 16. Aside from them, that show features PA pop-punks The Wonder Years and a ton of other likeminded bands. Tickets are on sale now.

On a similar note, Comeback Kid will be back on their tour supporting Four Year Strong to play Irving Plaza on January 22. Expire, Handguns, and Heart To Heart are also on the bill. Tickets are on sale now.

This Saturday (12/6) is Madball's 20th anniversary celebration of their debut album Set It Off at the Marlin Room at Webster Hall. They'll be joined by Turnstile, Death Before Dishonor, Take Offense and Downpresser. Tickets are still available.

For something a little less hardcore and a little more street punk this Saturday, Blanks 77 are playing NYC at Grand Victory before they play the Bouncing Souls holiday shows in NJ later in the month. They'll be joined by Dead Tricks, Parasitix and Breaking Sounds. Tickets for that are on sale now.

Later this month is the Sheer Terror and Slapshot show happening December 27 at MHOW. That's also with Heavy Chains, Blind Justice and Vice. Tickets are still available.

That about does it for the coming weeks. Did we miss anything?

Check out a whole mess of song streams from these bands, as well as tour dates for Orden Mundial and Red Death/Shrapnel, below...

Black Tusk at Saint Vitus in 2013 (more by Caroline Harrison)
Black Tusk

SXSW may be all about catching the hippest bands--check out the SXSW schedule for a lowdown on what's going on (or browse our "SXSW" tag for some highlights) -- including three BV day parties and the BV official showcase -- but there's no shortage of metal to bang your head to, either. Our metal blog, Invisible Oranges, is putting on a showcase on Thursday, March 13 at the Quantum Lounge (303 W. 5th St.) with Black Tusk, Mutoid Man (members Converge/Cave In), Kayo Dot, Yautja, Wild Throne and Venemous Maximus, and there are a number of other showcases and parties bringing heavy vibes. Here's a rundown of those events (with flyers and more details below).

TUESDAY

On Tuesday night (3/12), Pitchfork's Show No Mercy showcase goes down at House of Vans at Mohawk (912 Red River) with Indian, Kylesa, Power Trip, Christian Mistress, Windhand and Iron Reagan outside; and Youth Code, Gnaw, Primitive Man, Psalm Zero, Sannhet and Yautja inside.

WEDNESDAY

On Wednesday (3/13), it's the first of four Converse x Thrasher Death Match day parties at the Scoot Inn (1308 E 4th St) from noon to 6 across two stages with heavy representation from Earthless and The Shrine, plus some fun non-metal like Black Lips, Trash Talk (who also play the free Thursday BV party at Red 7), Cherry Glazerr and more. Free to the public.

Stereofly is also throwing a free party at Javelina Bar (69 Rainey St) with Yautja, Primitive Man, Gnarwhal and more.

There's also a not-free Heavy Metal Parking Lot day-into-night party at The Lost Well (2421 Webberville Rd) with Wino's reformed Spirit Caravan, The Shrine, Kylesa, Lazer/Wulf, Truckfighters and more. You can get advance tickets to that one.

Wednesday night, Relapse Records (who signed Iron Reagan, who do play SXSW but not this show) throws their showcase at The Dirty Dog (505 E. 6th St) with Windhand, Christian Mistress, Nothing, Obliteration, Primitive Man and Pyrrhon. You can also catch Nothing for free at the Thursday BV party at Red 7 which Trash Talk is also playing.

Not far from there, Roadhouse Management / Nuclear Blast Records will be presenting their showcase inside at Red 7 (611 E. 7th St) with Orchid, Kadavar, Scropion Child, BP Fallon & the Bandits, Mothership, Sweat Lodge and The Well. (Not metal, but outside at that same venue on the same night is our BrooklynVegan showcase. And hey, there are some heavier bands like Touche Amore and Frameworks on the bill.)

Also on Wednesday night, you can catch Wrekmeister Harmonies at Remedy (209B W. 5th St) with a non-metal lineup of Sean Nicholas Savage, Audacity, Tyvek and more.

THURSDAY

Thursday (3/13), the free Converse x Thrasher Death Match parties continue with Windhand, Nothing and not exactly metal (not that Nothing is really metal either), but certainly loud bands Fucked Up, Destruction Unit, together PANGEA and Dirty Fences.

Then at night, it's our previously mentioned Invisible Oranges showcase at the Quantum Lounge with Black Tusk, Mutoid Man, Kayo Dot, Yautja, Wild Throne and Venemous Maximus.

We do of course hope you come, but you can also catch Scale the Summit, The Ocean, Rivers of Nihil, Felix Martin, Vattnet Viskar, The Atlas Moth and Silver Snakes at the Metal Injection showcase at the Dirty Dog (505 E. 6th St).

FRIDAY

It's the free Converse x Thrasher Death Match parties again on Friday (3/14) with the recently reunited NYHC band Judge, the recently reunited '80s-era SST vets Bl'ast, plus quality newer bands like Kylesa, Power Trip, Black Tusk, Sannhet, Lecherous Gaze, Iron Reagan, Southern Lord-signed LA band Obliterations (not to be confused with Relapse-signed Norwegian band Obliteration), Youth Code and more.

During the day on Friday, New England Metal & Hardcore Fest also has a free party at G Pen Annex (corner of 6th and Red River) with Xibalba, Alpha & Omega, Comeback Kid, Backtrack, Counterparts, Downpresser and more.

That night, MetalSucks puts on their showcase at The Dirty Dog (505 E. 6th St), headlined by Animals as Leaders, and also featuring sets by After the Burial, Ringworm, Iron Reagan, Mutoid Man, Whores and East of the Wall.

The last day of the free Converse x Thrasher Death Match parties happens on Saturday (3/15), and though there's no metal at all on this one, you can still rage to Perfect Pussy and Diarrhea Planet.

SATURDAY

Then, Saturday night, Tone Deaf Touring's showcase is at Red Eyed Fly (715 Red River) with Spirit Caravan, Iron Reagan, King Parrot, Vattnet Viskar, Lazer/Wulf, Pilgrim and Vaporizer.

And if you've got a badge, you can check out some of the metal panels during the day, including From Riffs to Bits with James Williamson (The Stooges) and Buzz Osborne (Melvins) on Friday at 12:30 PM, and Has Metal Lost Its Edge? with Brandon Stosuy (Pitchfork), Chris Gigg (Woe), Emilie Friedlander (The Fader), former BrooklynVegan contributor Fred Pessaro (Noisey), and Kim Kelly (Pitchfork) on Thursday at 3:30 PM.

That's a good amount of choices of the heavy persuasion for this year's SXSW, but if you're trying to narrow down the things you want to catch, we've put together a list of 11 metal bands we're looking forward to seeing. Check out that list (in alphabetical order) and along with flyers and set times for the above-mentioned shows, below...

Xibalba at Power of the Riff East, 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)
xibalba

Xibalba have been pretty much perpetually active since releasing Hasta La Muerte in 2012. The band recently released a video for the song "Soledad" off that album, comprised entirely of homespun live footage and backstage antics taken over their last few years of roaming the country. The "antics" section is pretty much what you'd expect from a band that overtly worships both Madball and Obituary. Spoiler alert: they talk about money a lot and booze even more.

Xibalba are also part of a recently-announced North American tour in February and March headlined by long-running hardcore act Comeback Kid, who recorded a new album during the fall; Downpresser will be tagging along as well. The tour will stop at a number of festivals, including SXSW, Never Say Never Fest, and South By So What. It also includes an NYC stop at Santos Part House on February 26. No word on tickets yet, but you can keep checking Santos' Ticketweb page if you like.

Take a look at the Xibalba video and the full list of dates below.

Hot Water Music
Hot Water Music

Chuck Ragan (of Hot Water Music) is taking The Revival Tour 2012 across the US and Canada this March and April. Like past Revival Tours, the shows feature a number of singers (usually of the punk scene) and their acoustic instruments collaborating on stage in a traditional folk music fashion. This year's tour hits NYC on March 30 at Bowery Ballroom, and in addition to Chuck Ragan, features Dan Andriano (of Alkaline Trio), Tommy Gabel (of Against Me!), and Lucero-associate Cory Branan. Tickets go on sale Saturday (2/4) at noon. The Revival tour also has ticket bundle options available with tour samplers, vinyls, posters, and more.

Nathaniel Rateliff, who released his debut album back in 2010, is on a number of the dates too, but unfortunately will not play at the Bowery Ballroom show. However, he will play in NYC one day before that show as part of the Communion-presented "Austin to Boston" tour, which kicks off at this year's SXSW in Austin. That tour hits Mercury Lounge on March 29 and also includes Ben Howard, The Staves, and Bear's Den. Tickets are on sale now.

Chuck Ragan's band Hot Water Music, who have been reunited since 2008, have announced that they're working on their first new album since the reunion and since 2004's The New What Next. They've been recording the album with Bill Stevenson (Descendents) and it should see the light of day this May on Rise Records, the label they signed to over the summer. Hot Water Music released the single "The Fire, The Steel, The Tread," b/w "Up to Nothing" in September of 2011. There's no word of whether or not these songs will appear on the new album, but you can stream them both below.

Hot Water Music have a few shows scheduled in 2012 including Bamboozle in Asbury Park, NJ and SXSW. Single day passes for 5/19 when HWM plays Bamboozle, along with The Promise Ring, A$AP Rocky, Action Bronson, and others, are on sale now. HWM doesn't have many other shows announced at the moment but maybe they'll schedule a NYC show when they're in the area for Bamboozle like The Promise Ring did.

All dates, streams, and tour fliers below...

Continue reading "Revival Tour announced w/ Chuck Ragan, Tom Gabel, Dan Andriano & Nathaniel Rateliff (who has his own dates too)"

Bamboozle

When we first mentioned the lineup for this year's Bamboozle, which is taking place from May 18-20 in Asbury Park, NJ, it only included Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, Skrillex, Blink 182, Incubus, and Mac Miller. The generally lame festival has since revealed more artists including a surprising number of not-lame artists like the reunited Promise Ring (their first East Coast date announced, hopefully an NYC show to come?), Hot Water Music, Bouncing Souls, A$AP Rocky, Action Bronson, and Murphy's Law. Take that, Warped Tour.

Tickets for Bamboozle are on sale now. Updated lineup below...
