Frankie Rose

Frankie Rose releases Interstellar this month (2/21) and as Bill points out, she's left the garage pop of her debut behind in favor of synthy, jangly pop. It's a huge step up from her last album and you can stream the entire thing at SPIN. She plays a record release show for the album at Knitting Factory on February 21 with Dive and Night Manager.

The new album from Dr. Dog, Be The Void, is out this week (2/7) and streaming at Conan O'Brien's website Team Coco. Watch the video of their performance on the show last night (2/8) below. Also, don't forget to grab your tickets for their Terminal 5 show on 3/23 while they're still available. More tour dates HERE.

Their tour hits NYC on 2/24 at MHOW and 2/25 at Bowery Ballroom. Both shows are sold out but Sharon plays Bowery again the next night (2/26) and tickets are still available.

Islands' new album, A Sleep & A Forgetting, is due out February 14 via ANTI- and you can stream the entire thing below. Their tour in support of it hits NYC on 2/25 at LPR. Tickets are still available.

Air's new album, Le Voyage Dans La Lune, which features a collaboration with Beach House's Victoria Legrand, and as mentioned is a soundtrack, is out this week and streaming in full on NPR.

It's not exactly an album, but Fucked Up's 15+ minute "Year of the Tiger" single which features Jim Jarmusch, Austra, and Annie-Claude DeschĂȘnes of Duchess Says, can be streamed below.

White Denim in Austin earlier this month (more by Tim Griffin)
White Denim

White Denim are currently on tour with Wilco. That tour doesn't hit NYC but the band just scheduled their own NYC show happening on April 13 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for this show go on sale Friday (1/27) at noon with an AmEx presale starting today (1/25) at noon. No word on whether or not this show is part of a larger headlining tour for the band.

Speaking of Wilco, they just released an iTunes session and played Conan Monday night in support of it. They played the title track from 2011's The Whole Love, and another track from the album, "Dawned on Me," as a web exclusive. Videos of both of those performances are below.

Danny Amis

A message from Danny Amis

Dear Friends...

I can't thank you enough for your generosity.
Thanks to your help, and the upcoming benefit shows,
I no longer need to stress out over my medical bills. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

As many of you know, I was diagnosed with Cancer in 2010.
This forced me to stop working and touring.
The type of cancer I've been told I have is called
"Multiple Myeloma", cancer of the bone marrow.
I was caught off guard without insurance, but thankfully was able
to obtain insurance through the Affordable Care Act which
passed congress last year and for which I am eternally grateful.
Without that insurance I wouldn't have been able to get a necessary
procedure to save my life called a Stem Cell Transplant.
I underwent that procedure in May, and it seems to have been successful.
I now face a couple of months of recovery.

Your generosity has helped immensely, it's a very expensive procedure.
Unfortunately, high medical costs are something I'll have to face the rest of my life,
as this disease is incurable. I can only hope to knock it into remission for a while.
I'm going to leave this donation button up for those who still want to help.
Simply be aware that I'm not set up to accept tax-deductible donations.
Again, I can't thank you enough for your help!

That donation button is at Danny's website, as is a list of upcoming benefit shows including the one taking place at Maxwell's in Hoboken on June 29. The Raybeats, The Individuals, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley (of Yo La Tengo), The Schramms, and Tall Lonesome Pines all will play the NJ benefit for the sick member of the instrumental surf group Los Straitjackets. Tickets for the Hoboken show are on sale. Conan O'Brien is performing at the LA one which is also still on sale.

Los Straitjackets go on a very long tour of their own without Amis this summer. The tour stops at City Winery on June 23 and 24 with Dave Alvin & the Guilty Ones. Tickets are available for both shows. It also hits Maxwell's on August 4 with Bill Kirchen. Tickets are on sale. All LS dates and benefit dates, below...

Nicole Atkins during SXSW 2011 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Nicole Atkins

If you like Bob Dylan and booze-soaked singalongs, you might want to consider hitting Bowery Ballroom on May 26th and 27th for Dylan Fest, a two day extravaganza in celebration of the 70th birthday of musical deity. Much like the one-night fest last year (and at the similar Petty Fest), both nights boast familiar names like Norah Jones, Adam Green, Will Forte and Jason Sudeikis of SNL, Jesse Malin (who has other shows coming up), Nikolai Fraiture of the Strokes, as well as members of Little Joy, The Hold Steady, Fountains of Wayne, Mooney Suzuki, The Lemonheads, and many more, with Nicole Atkins on board for the first night (5/26). Tickets are on sale for both the 5/26 and the 5/27 shows at noon today. The full linuep is below.

Nicole Atkins and her band The Black Sea have also added a headlining show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on July 8th. Tickets go on sale Friday April 29th at noon. The show is one of a few scattered dates scheduled for Atkins in the coming months. Check out her whole schedule below.

In related news, Norah Jones has been announced as the special guest for Saturday's previously discussed Doveman show at Le Poisson Rouge. Tickets are still available. The show is one of three more scheduled for Doveman at LPR, with other appearances occurring on May 26th and June 24th. Details on guests for those shows are still forthcoming.

In also related news, Nicolai Fraiture's day job, The Strokes, have announced that they will appear at the sold out T In The Park festival in Scotland in July along with Pulp, Coldplay, Slash, and Foo Fighters. The band also recently appeared on Conan O'Brien (on 4/20). Check out a video of their performance of "Games" alongside a Nicole Atkins video of "Cry Cry Cry" from SXSW and all tour dates and stuff, below.

Rebecca Black

Industry analyst Bob Lefsetz reports today on the signing of Internet sensation Rebecca Black to Universal Records...

Universal Republic, to be exact. Home of Chumbawamba as well as the distributor of Big Machine, home of Taylor Swift.

Actually, this is a joint venture between Republic and Big Machine. In other words, Scott Borchetta is going to Taylorize Rebecca.

First move?

Rebecca's gonna move into Scott Swift's house. Environment is everything. Scott's been there and done that, he knows how to get Rebecca on the right path.

Then there's the credibility tour. Taking a page out of Taylor's book, Rebecca's going to go on a radio station jaunt, just her and her guitar, proving to PDs that she can actually sing and play.

Meanwhile, the best songwriters known to man are concocting cuts that will truly catapult Rebecca into the stratosphere.

Dr. Luke has been saving a track for the right artist. Ke$ha has already recorded backgrounds, she was the lead singer, but the track was too good for her marginal talent, Rebecca's now got the slot. And rumor has it Weezy is going to rap in the break...

...Unlike Justin Bieber, Rebecca's voice is not going to drop, there are no issues of puberty. However she will not be getting breast implants immediately, they're going to wait to see if she fills out before any plastic surgery is done. Britney Spears is Rebecca's mentor. Having made a full emotional recovery, Britney wants to insure that Rebecca doesn't make the same mistakes she did...

In related news, Britney Spears is back and scheduled to play Nassau Coliseum and the Izod Center in August (that's actually true), and Rebecca Black is the new owner of funny website Funny or Die (or so they claim). Happy Friday!

Nicole Atkins

Friday night show at Maxwell's marked the last show of Nicole Atkins' tour with Cotton Jones. Some pictures from that show are in this post. And though she kicks off a round of dates in Austin on Wednesday, she said from the NJ stage that she will be making an appearance with her fellow Black Sea band member Jared Samuel at Cameo Gallery tonight (3/15) as part of his other band Minerva Lions (El, Wendy, and Belleweather are also on the bill).

As previously mentioned, Nicole's next public NYC show is at Rockwood Music Hall on 3/30 as part of the Sweet Divines who formed after the Dansettes broke up. Other members of the Dansettes formed the Nouvellas whose members, along with members of Cotton Jones, backed Nicole & the Black Sea when they performed "Cry, Cry, Cry" on Conan in February. The video of that, is under the rest of the pics, below....

Tom Allen
Tom Allen

Very funny UK comedian Tom Allen, who just completed a mini 'Pretty Good Friends' east coast tour with Eugene Mirman, Reggie Watts and Kumail Nanjiani, is now on their homebase and playing his own show at Union Hall tonight (3/8).

It's a late show - begins at 10pm. If you want to make a night of it, another comedy show, with Kristen Schaal and more, is happening at the same venue earlier.

The next 'Pretty Good Friends' with Eugene Mirman happens at Union Hall on Sunday, 3/13 at 7pm. That's an early show that is followed, strangely, by a "CONAN O'BRIEN STAND-UP GUEST SHOWCASE" with Eliot Glazer, Andy Haynes, Matt McCarthy, Eugene Mirman, John Roberts, Dan St. Germain, Myq Kaplan, Joe Mande, Dave Hill, Jay Oakerson, and Kurt Metzger. It is unclear if Conan even knows about this intimate Park Slope basement show with his name on it, but it should be good nonetheless.

Reggie Watts may or may not being playing a free show at Cake Shop tonight (3/8), but he's definitely playing TWO shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 30th.

Aziz Ansari may or may not be on the bill of "Tell Your Friends" at Lolita bar tonight, but host Liam McEneaney has leaked the following clue:

JUST ADDED TONIGHT:
A guy whose name is very nearly an anagram for "ZZ Sariani."
You might know him from his show that is anagrammed as "A Crankiest Pardoner."
And his sketch show on "VTM" might also be known as "Giant Human."
And his first name is "Aziz."
And I "farted."
Brody Stevens, who like many of these guys is also heading to SXSW, will be there too!

Eugene Mirman can also be found at City Winery with John Wesley Harding (and Andrew Bird) on April 22nd.

A Tom Allen video below...

Conan & Jack White

Conan O'Brien (you know him from Twitter) returned to television (basic cable) last night (11/8) with his new, and simply titled show Conan (he joked they can't replace him now). Guests included Seth Rogen, Lea Michelle, and Conan's good friend Jack White, who not only was the last musical guest on Late Night with Conan O'Brien (as was Meg), but who has known Conan since 1999. Well, that's at least what Conan claimed on the show, but not surprisingly, he was at least partly joking. He told Rolling Stone the full story:

In Detroit, there's a place where you can get a bite to eat, and then go bowling, and there's a rock venue there too," Conan recalled. "When I was there -- I wanna say this is like 1999 -- I got a bite to eat with my crew, and then we decided to go bowling, and these kids started to come over and hang out with us. I don't even remember -- I just remember hanging out with all these really young, scruffy Detroit kids for a while, all of us talking and drinking beer.

"Flash forward to: the White Stripes are the big deal and they're on Saturday Night Live, and I really love them, so I went to watch them at rehearsal," he continued. "After they're done rehearsing, Jack and Meg walk down -- and they're coming right at me. And they said, 'Hey, it's good to see you again.'

"And I said, 'Again?' They said, 'Yeah, in Detroit you hung out with us for like three hours and had beers in a bowling alley and we just shot the shit and you were real nice.'"

Conan erupted into laughter. "And I'm like, 'I didn't know that was you guys!' "

Conan, who performed with Jack on last night's show (as you can see in the above picture), also showed off the recent records that Jack put for him after he performed and recorded at Jack's Third Man Records studio in Nashville over the summer (order them HERE). That performance took place on Conan's 2010 live tour which happened while he was away from television. That tour, complete with the same house band who are on the new tbs show, included a stop at Bonnaroo and two guest-filled nights at Radio City Music Hall in NYC (night one and night two).

Video from last night's show below...

Karen Elson @ Studio at Webster Hall
Karen Elson

Karen Elson played Williamsburg Waterfront on Sunday, June 20th with Band of Horses and Grizzly Bear. The night before that she headlined a show at Studio at Webster Hall along with Midnight Masses. Samantha Marble was there and wrote: "Looking back on the show I thought that Karen Elson having Midnight Masses open for her was a perfect balance in terms of setting the tone. Midnight Masses posess the kind of power and soul that forces you to see the light. Whereas Karen Elson sings songs gently but powerfully. The mystery in the tone of her voice makes you feel like you are sitting outside during twilight in the country. It's dark but everything is illuminated." Her pictures from that show are in this post.

Karen Elson doesn't have any more shows lined up, but Midnight Masses will be at Union Pool on June 27th with Starring, Wizardry and Skeletonbreath (a Northside show). They'll also be at Mercury Lounge on July 10th with Snowden (tickets) and Cake Shop on July 19th.

The next show at the Williamsburg Waterfront is Silversun Pickups, Against Me! and The Henry Clay People on Friday, June 25th.

Karen Elson's The Ghost Who Walks came out in May on Third Man Records, and a video from her release party set at the label's store/studio in Nashville is posted below (she also played the label's pop-up at SXSW). Conan O'Brien played the same Nashville space on June 10th. A live LP of Conan's performance is available for preorder from the label, and is expected by the end of July.

More pictures from the Studio at Webster Hall show and the above-mentioned video and tour dates are below...

Conan O'Brien played Third Man Recs in Nashville (via)
Conan O'Brien

Conan O'Brien & Jack White (via Team Coco)
Conan O'Brien

Conan O'Brien and his band, on their way to Bonnaroo, rolled into Nashville on June 10th for a free show at Jack White's Third Man Records.

Conan blazed through a rocking setlist of stuff from our Legally Prohibited show - as well as a few other jams that we've never done! The energy in the room was incredible: The band lit by a dim red light, the hot Nashville air thick with excitement; the room packed to capacity - it was a scene the likes of which I've never experienced. I could totally see this show being something that happened outside under a tent in the South in the 50's. A very, very cool vibe.

And the crowd - the crowd!! They were giving the energy right back to Conan a hundredfold! They danced their asses off, screamed their lungs out, clapped their hands off - in short, gave a lot of body parts to the floor of Third Man (the post show clean up was a little awkward) But the BEST part of the night was that the whole thing was being recorded on a reel to reel tape! Why reel to reel? Because tonight's performance is going to be pressed into a record that people at the show could buy! Say it with me, party people: HOLY CRAP. What that also meant for the show was that halfway through, Conan & the band had to stop for a few minutes so that the reel could be changed! SO COOL. It's just like Elvis or Buddy Holly or something!! In other words: It was Super Cool Old School. As old and as cool a school as they come, y'all. And just when I was sure that jack White couldn't get any cooler... He proves me wrong once again. ;)

Speaking of Jack, when Conan went off the setlist and starting playing a little "Creep" by Radiohead, Jack jumped onstage and put an old timey chiminysweepesque hat on his head! It was completely unplanned, and made us all crack up. Then, for the last song, Jack jumped up and joined Conan for a blow your brain out of your skull version of 20 Flight Rock...[Team Coco]

Part of the set list was Conan's cover of the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army."

Conan's tour, which stopped at Radio City for two nights, is at Bonnaroo this weekend and finishes on June 14th in Atlanta.

The full set list (which lists the last song as Ronnie Hawkins' "40 Days"), a video from the show (and more from the scene outside of it) are below...

Pee-wee Herman @ Radio City Music Hall
Pee Wee Herman

Man oh man! ANOTHER kickass show tonight!! How do we do it?! HOW. DO WE. DO. IT. I'll tell you how... By some more help from some great friends! Friends like PEE WEE HERMAN, JOHN KRASINSKI & ELI MANNING. Oh... And one other guest you might have heard of... A man by the name of...MAX WEINBERG!

It was really great seeing Max and catching up and everything. Max dropped by and was nice enough to sit in on our closing number, The Weight! Here's them going back out for the encore:

Annnnnnd.... That's all she wrote for the Legally Prohibited Tour in the Big Apple!! Thank you, New York. We had an absolutely fantastic time... And we hope that you had the same. Now, we load out, hit the showers, board the buses... And head on out to Boston! Oh, Boston. Board up the windows, lock down the kegs, and pray for daylight... BECAUSE HURRICANE COCO IS HEADED YOUR WAY! KAPOW! [Team Coco]

Conan O'Brien's second night (6/2) at Radio City featured different guests than the first. Those included Pee Wee Herman (who's coming to Broadway this fall), Eli Manning, John Krasinski and Max Weinberg, who joined the band & Conan for the closing cover of "The Weight." The tour continues on to Bonnaroo and ends June 14th in Atlanta. Videos from last night below...

Conan O'Brien & Vampire Weekend @ Radio City Music Hall (TomChau)
Conan

"Conan O'Brien brought The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour to Radio City Music Hall Tuesday night for the first of two performances. By far, the evening's highlight was the surprise appearance of Stephen Colbert, who came out onstage to rib O'Brien for leaving New York to do The Tonight Show in Hollywood...

...Their verbal tiff quickly escalated: "We're at Radio City, there's only one possible way to fight here," Colbert said with his face literally in O'Brien's face. "Anything that gets us to separate our noses and lips," O'Brien answered. "How about a good old-fashioned dance-off?" Colbert suggested. Cue "Pour Some Sugar on Me."

I would say Colbert was winning until he ruptured his hamstring. He was about to admit defeat when -- "Don't you dare, Stephen Colbert! Don't you dare! Don't you dare!" It was the voice of Jon Stewart booming from the back of the theater. (Even those of us in the last row of the second mezzanine who couldn't see him knew it immediately.) Stewart walked down an aisle to the stage -- wearing a red satin shirt, black pants, and a gold cummerbund -- as the audience exploded into a standing ovation. The fan reaction caught on the video says it best: "Holy f--ing s--!"... [EW]

Conan O'Brien was also joined by Vampire Weekend (good practice), Paul Rudd, and Bill Hadar at last night's show which was opened by Reggie Watts. Conan encouraged audience members to live tweet the show. Videos, including of the Colbert part, below...

Conan O'Brien in Eugene, OR 4/12 (by ob)
Conan Obrien

The approach, judging from Monday night's performance, was to sweep in with a torrent of energy (or as O'Brien put it in a Twitter post, a "towering tsunami of dry, self-deprecating humor"), high spirits, music, video bits, flashing lights and a crew of old favorite faces and routines. Andy Richter was back, along with LaBamba and the band (though not Max Weinberg), a bear with a certain self-gratifying habit, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog was there on tape, along with other schtick the sellout crowd ate up with gusto. For surprise, there was a brief appearance by Jack McBrayer, aka Kenneth the page on "30 Rock," and the band Spoon [whose own current tour happened to be in Oregon on the same night].

It was plain that this was the first stop on the tour, and cast and crew were getting a feel for what worked and what didn't. At times, the show seemed to cheerfully roll around like an out-of-control soccer ball. But O'Brien and crew always managed to bring it back from the "where-is-this-going?" episodic brink. The proceedings could stand some tightening and trimming -- Conan, we know you love that guitar, but a few of those songs should probably go -- but everybody was giving it their all.

At times, it almost felt like we were watching O"Brien's TV show, with the big-screen display on the stage behind him beaming out his face, and some delightfully loose back-and-forth banter between Conan and Andy. All in all, it's hard to get too crabby about a show that tries to squeeze in so much comedy...The Oregonian]

Conan's "The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour," which kicked off last night (Monday, 4/12) in Eugene, Oregon, comes to Radio City Music Hall for two nights on June 1st and 2nd. Those are sold out, but some tickets are still available for his May 30th show at the Borgata in Atlantic City.

The first night of the tour coincided with the news that Conan would be hosting a new show on TBS this November.

Videos of songs, sketches and dancing from night one (though none of Spoon unfortunately) are below...

Conan O'Brien

Conan O'Brien will be going out on a 30-city tour this April, May and June. Dubbed the "Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour," it'll consist of "a night of music, comedy, hugging, and the occasional awkward silence" with Conan, Andy Richter and members of the Tonight show band.

The tour comes to NYC's Radio City on June 1st - a show that's already sold out. And they just added a second date at Radio City the next night, which is on sale. Its stop at the somewhat-nearby Atlantic City Borgata on May 30th has some tickets still available.

Spoon

Spoon you rock rocked Mercury Lounge tonite and I thank you for it - [noise64]
If you got in line early yesterday afternoon (as early as 1PM from some reports), or were one of the lucky few to get advanced tickets, then you were able to catch Spoon at Mercury Lounge last night (1/21) with Mahogany. The show was one of a few the band has played in the past week leading up to release of their new album Transference (stream it), including El Cid in LA, The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien (video below), and many others, continuing at Waterloo Records in Austin,TX at 4PM on Monday, 1/25/10.

Spoon is scheduled to play one slightly less intimate show in NYC at Radio City Music Hall with Deerhunter ON 3/26 (tix), but Spoon frontman Britt Daniel will do double time this weekend by playing Sound Fix on Saturday (1/23) during day before hitting MHOW later that night with a star-studded lineup. That show, featuring appearances from Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), St. Vincent, Zach Galifianakis, Janeeane Garofalo, Wyatt Senac, John Shade, host Bobby Tisdale (just added) and others as part of a benefit for Haiti. Tickets go on sale at noon for $35, and $40 at the door (if there are any left). 100% of the proceeds to go to Haiti.

Spoon is also on board to play Coachella along with Pavement, Faith No More, Jay-Z and a host of others.

Patton Oswalt & Conan O'Brien
Patton Oswalt

"The late-night nightmare is almost over. Conan O'Brien is leaving NBC and receiving a payout--and he'll be free to appear on another network before his contract expires, Kim Masters reports.

The NBC-Leno-Conan war is close to ending, according to a knowledgeable source. According to the outlines of a settlement, Conan O'Brien will leave NBC and the network will make an as-yet unspecified payment. The comedian will be free to appear elsewhere on television well before his contract expires, despite earlier threats from NBC that it would prevent him from working anywhere else.

There is still opportunity for the negotiation to fall apart, but clearly, at this point it is in NBC's interest to put an end to this dismal episode." [The Daily Beast] (via Gawker)

Patton Oswalt, Aziz Ansari, and Ricky Gervais all recently appeared on Conan. Videos below...

Aziz Ansari and Conan O'Brien

"In the grand scheme of things, figuring out whether to stay in a job that pays north of $15 million a year or fighting for some sort of buyout that would also be in the millions -- if not multimillions -- is something of a luxury problem. But those are basically the options facing NBC's Conan O'Brien, who is being told "The Tonight Show" is going to move from 11:35 p.m. to 12:05 a.m. to make room for Jay Leno's return to late night." [LA Times]
Conan has rejected the offer to move to 12:05. His statement along with videos of Vampire Weekend and Aziz Ansari on the show (both from the past few days), below...

Alice in Chains

I procrastinated posting this because of the inner struggle I have with the "new singer" thing. Alice in Chains have announced a huge tour which includes a March 8th AND a just added March 9th show at NYC's Terminal 5 which are now on sale. In related news, the band was nominated for a Grammmy this week for "Best Hard Rock Performance"... you can see some of their performance from their last NYC show (at Irving Plaza) HERE. All dates, and a video of their Halloween performance on Conan O'Brien, below...
