White Rabbits in Prospect Park (more by Chris La Putt)
White Rabbits

White Rabbits were en route to Cleveland last year when pianist Stephen Patterson received a call inviting the young Brooklyn septet to perform on The Late Show with David Letterman. "I completely freaked out," Patterson says. "I pulled off at a highway rest stop and we just ran around the van, calling our moms and dads."

Becoming elated over such news is more or less obligatory. Nellie McKay remembers "jumping in the air and doing a kind of flippery arm motion" upon being informed of her first Letterman booking; Spoon frontman Britt Daniel says he was "absolutely shocked" when told that Saturday Night Live had scheduled his band. But at the time of their Late Show invitation, White Rabbits were without a label apparatus, press clippings or even fans. "We got back in the van, drove to Cleveland and played a show for five people," Patterson says. When the day of the taping arrived, the musicians--whose vehicle had been stolen near their Bushwick home--hired a "man with a van" to drive them to the Ed Sullivan Theater. While waiting in the green room, they received another call, this time from their landlord. Their rent was overdue. [Time Out]

Jamie Lidell @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - June 9, 2008 (more by Jason Bergman)
Jamie Lidell

Those familiar with his earlier material may struggle to see how a leap into music so radio-friendly that Elton John is apparently a fan could possibly be described as an experimental move. The fact that Lidell stayed at Warp despite major-label courtship may avert some of the sell-out charges. Nonetheless, there seems little doubt that Jim will be a highly divisive record, repelling at least some old fans with as much force as it will attract new ones. If Jim is not a hit, Lidell risks losing his experimental fanbase without having a attracted a new one to replace it. Indeed, the knives are already out in some quarters: the new record has already been compared to Jamiroquai - and that is not intended as a compliment. [Guardian]

Radiohead - Creep

One of the biggest bands in the world, Radiohead, will make an exclusive appearance on NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" Wednesday April 23 (12:35-1:35am ET).

The band - who made their network television debut on "Late Night" and were O'Brien's first-ever musical guest in 1993 - has recorded an exclusive live performance from their critically acclaimed and record-industry-paradigm-shifting release "In Rainbows" to air on O'Brien's contribution to NBC's "Green Week" of environmentally conscious programming.

Recorded live in London, Radiohead's performance of "House of Cards," represents an ongoing effort by the socially conscious band to act in the greenest manner possible. By opting to record this exclusive performance rather than fly over for a one-off appearance, the band - as frontman Thom Yorke notes in the introduction to their performance - avoided leaving a carbon footprint equivalent to driving one's car for a solid year.

Other guests on "Late Night's" "Green" show are a bit more literal - "Robot Chicken" creator and actor Seth GREEN and "Today" show travel editor Peter GREENberg.

Grizzly Bear plays Conan tonight (April 21). She & Him on Tuesday. Video of that 1993 Radiohead performance below....

AA (big A big A)
AA Bondy

Last time AA Bondy played NYC was also the first time I ever saw him play live. It was late on a Friday night, the sold out Mercury Lounge was fully packed with drinking patrons, and the Felice Brothers were coming on next - not the best conditions for a solitary man on stage by himself with just a microphone and his acoustic guitar.

As was to be expected, there was lots of talking and it made it hard to pay attention at first. His wife Claire Felice (who also took the above photo of him) joined him on keyboards, and that helped a little, but not enough. Then in walked a drummer, and not just any drummer - it was Russell Simmins of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (and Tiny Masters of Today) fame - and that was just the magic ingredient the music needed to turn things into a proper Friday night rock show. The drums helped bring the beautiful songs off "American Hearts" (which is being re-released by Fat Possum) alive, and kept all eyes focused on the front of the room while simultaneously keeping mouths shut (or at least drowning them out).

AA plays again this Wednesday night (March 12) at the BrooklynVegan official showcase at Club De Ville in Austin. I can't wait to see him again, and I'm equally stoked that The Weakerthans chose him to accompany them and Christine Fellows on tour this spring. Tickets are still on sale for the April 11th show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (the same night AA plays Conan O'Brien). All tour dates below.....
