No Joy at Mexican Summer Five (more by PSquared)
No Joy
MLIW

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...

No Joy, Black Pus, Cousin Brian, Flagland @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Montreal's great, underrated No Joy return for a second Night Bazaar show of 2014. It's part of of a night of interesting bands and its free.

Sunflower Bean, Baked, ONWE, WADE @ Baby's All Right
Lightly psychedelic with grooving basslines and sweet harmonies, new Brooklyn Sunflower Bean seem to have a firm grasp on their sound.

Single Mothers, Vomitface, Robot Death Kites @ Cake Shop
Canada's Single Mothers have been making highly promising literate punk for a few years now, and this year they're finally ready to release their long-awaited debut LP. This is their second of two NYC shows this weekend, and much smaller than last night's.

Salt Cathedral, Johnny Aries, Arc Waves @ Glasslands
Johnny Aires plays in the live incarnation of The Drums and his solo stuff isn't a million miles away from the strummy guitar pop of The Drums' earlier material and fans of that -- or The Smiths -- should find something to dig here.

Garfunkel and Oates @ Irving Plaza
Comedy-folk duo Garfunkel and Oates consists of actress/singers Kate Micucci (Scrubs, Big Bang Theory) and Riki Lindhome (Gilmore Girls, Big Bang Theory), and are named after "two famous rock-and-roll second bananas." They've got a new show on IFC and are also currently touring, hitting NYC tonight.

Handsome Family, Richard Buckner @ Mercury Lounge
True Detective may not have scored much at this year's Emmys, but the hit HBO show certainly brought deserved attention to veteran Americana gothic band Handsome Family via "Far From Any Road," which was used as the theme song.

Modern Life is War, Nothing, Give, Land of Blood and Sunshine @ Bowery Ballroom
Modern Life Is War's initial run as a band in the early-mid 2000s inspired many of today's great post-hardcore bands, and 2013's comeback album, Fever Hunting, showed they've still got it as much as any of the bands that came in their wake. Great openers too: heavy shoegazers Nothing, DC punks Give, and Iowa psychedelic band Land of Blood & Sunshine.

Benji B, Dam-Funk (live), DJ Marfox, Tessela, Dutch E Germ, Avalon Emerson @ MoMA PS1
Warm Up, the outdoor daytime show series of forward-thinking electronic music, continues with BBC's Benji B, the funky Dam-Funk, Portugal's DJ Marfox, UK bass producer Tessela, former Gang Gang Dancer Dutch E Germ, and Berlin-via-San Francisco producer Avalon Emerson.

Tessela, Teengirl Fantasy, Avalon Emerson, Contakt @ Baby's All Right
Keep the party going with Tessela and Avalon Emerson after Warm Up by heading to Baby's where they team up with NYC locals Teengirl Fantasy and Contakt.

Roger Waters, The Persuasions, G.E. Smith, Rufus Wainwright @ Perfect Earth Project
The former Pink Floyd frontman will be among a handful of performers set to delight dozens of 1%ers (the non biker kind) in the Hamptons at the Perfect Earth Project's Second Biennial Family Picnic and Concert. Tickets range from $250 to $10,000. Proceeds benefit PEP, an organization that "promotes toxin-free lawns and landscapes to protect human health and the environment."

Mount Kimbie (DJ), Aden, JDH & Dave P, Dan Wender, Blacky II @ The Wick
UK electronic duo Mount Kimbie were supposed to play a live set at this show, but are now actually DJing. Though we can still likely count on them to play some good tunes.

Heavy Blanket, Honey @ Union Pool
You may remember -- and maybe your ears are still ringing from it if you were there -- thatHeavy Blanket played Summer Thunder last year and got shut down by the cops after 15 minutes of wailing for being too damn loud. How long will they make it this year. Show up early to catch newish local psych-garage act Honey. Free.

Jeff Bridges and the Abiders @ The Wellmont Theater
Jeff Bridges won an Oscar for his portrayal of a washed-up country singer in 2009'sCrazy Heart. Having played music most of his life, Bridges released his first album in 2000 and his most recent was 2011's self-titled, produced by T-Bone Burnett (who did the music for Crazy Heart). His daughter, Jessie, opens the show.

Andrew Cedermark, Liam Betson, LVL UP, Mitski @ Shea Stadium
Good night for indie rock at Shea with two former Titus Andronicus members, Andrew Cedermark and Liam Betson, Brooklyn rockers LVL UP, and singer/songwriter Mitski.

Motley Crue, Alice Cooper @ PNC Bank Arts Center
Two generations of authority-thumbing hard rock hit NJ tonight. The musicians who made the music may be getting up there but "Dr. Feelgood" and "Eighteen" (amongst others) remain rebel classics.

Florist, Nightmom, Yours Are The Only Ears, Simone Jones @ Silent Barn
If you're into it lo-fi bedroom pop, there's plenty of quality artists in that style on this bill tonight.

Una Bestia Incontrolable, Dawn of Humans, Hank Wood & the Hammerheads, La Misma @ 538 Johnson
Barcelona's Iron Lung-signed punks Una Bestia Incontrolable play their second NYC show of the weekend tonight, and some of NYC's best punk bands round out the bill.

Electric Zoo @ Randall's Island
Day of 2 this EDM festival that may not be the way you want to spend your Saturday, but if you are going, there's some stuff worth catching like Moon Boots, Kidnap Kid, Pete Tong and a few others.

Visuals (Other People), Milo McBride, Bbodyworkk @ Cameo
Part of the late night "Parka Nights" series, this show is headlined by Berlin singer Visuals who makes very catchy bedroom pop. Check out his song "A Pixel" which was produced by Darkside's Nicholas Jaar, below.

2562
2562

Dutch dubstep/techno producer 2562 has been releasing some singles this year, like January's "Ahead" b/w "Endgame," and he's set to follow that with a new one, "After Hours" b/w "What Preset" via his own A Made Up Sound label on October 1. You can listen to clips of both sides of the new single below.

2562 is also playing a few US shows this month, including one in NYC at Output on September 20. Also on the bill is another dubstep producer, Martyn (who has a split with 2562), and NYC producer Contakt, whose "Nobody Else" b/w "Tessera 04" single came out this year and can be streamed below. Mr. C and Black Light Smoke will be in the venue's Panther Room that day, and tickets to that whole night are on sale now.

All dates are listed, along with streams from all artists, below...

Sepalcure at LPR - 12/30/12 (via Heathered Pearls)
Sepalcure

Sepalcure (aka Machinedrum and Braille) just played a NYC show at Le Poisson Rouge (pictured above) right before 2012 wrapped up (12/30) after their tour with Shlohmo came to a close. Machinedrum stuck around for one more NYC show last week before heading over to Europe, but Braille is still around and will play a NYC show this Friday (1/11) at Cameo with Archie Pelago, Contakt, Nooka Jones, and Enoe. Admission for that show is $8 at the door or $5 with RSVP.

The show is a release party for Cambio, the compilation album by Percussion Lab which features songs by Sepalcure, Braille, Machinedrum, Shigeto, Daedelus (who's touring soon), Mux Mool, and more. You can stream that compilation in its entirety, along with a few other Braille tracks, below.
