Disclaimer: 285 Kent may/may not have a fridge full of 40s like the "G Thing" video
Twenty years? Yes, it's been that long since we first heard Snoop "pimpin' hoes and clockin' a grip like [he] was Dolemite" from the classic "Nuthin But a G Thing." The stars have officially aligned too, with this past weekend capping off a string of celebrations called Dre Day. Dre Day is both a time to look back to the classic The Chronic LP and also to celebrate the birthday of its creator, Dr. Dre.... you know, the guy that makes those headphones.
Anyway, the weekend featured events from coast to coast (Hannibal Buress was tweeting from one in Miami last night) in celebration of the West Coast hip hop favorite, and continues tonight (2/18)with a party set to blast at 285 Kent with Cosmo Baker, Nick Hook, Egg Foo Young and Project Matt. Tickets are still available, but get there early for some free Bulldog gin (and juice, naturally).
Head below for some classic videos from The Chronic, a full stream of it's follow-up LP Chronic 2001, and don't hold your breath for a follow-up LP Detox (which has been coming soon for close to ten years now).
Girl and Chocolate Skateboards teamed up for the collaborative skate video, Pretty Sweet, directed by Spike Jonze, which made its world premiere in LA on Friday (11/16) and is continuing to be screened in other places, including NYC's Sunshine Cinema tonight (11/18) at 7 PM and 9 PM. ESPN was at the film's premiere in LA, where the screening was introduced by Tyler, the Creator. They write:
The first part belonged to Vincent Alvarez and set the tone for what's to come. "Pretty Sweet" is every bit a Girl/Chocolate video, but this one is all about the kids. [Vincent] Alvarez's intensity, Cory Kennedy's innovation, Stevie Perez's precision are complimented Raven Tershy's agility on street and in transition, while Elijah Berle's ender had Gerwer in front of me holding his head in amazement. Gary Rogers' mind blew sometime during Sean Malto's seemingly endless barrage of tricks. The video will be available on iTunes, DVD, and Blu-Ray on November 27. You can watch the trailer below. All dates and cities for the film's screenings are listed here.
Veteran Girl/Chocolate skaters Marc Johnson, Kenny Anderson, Jeron Wilson, Brian Anderson, Jesus Fernandez, Mike Carroll and Eric Koston laid down a serious assault, reminding you how these two board companies got to where they are, but this video was clearly an introduction to the next crew, who'll carry the torch in years to come.
After tonight's screenings at Sunshine Cinema, there will be an afterparty in NYC at Le Poisson Rouge with DJ sets by Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick ZInner, Spike Jonze's brother Sam Spiegel, Cosmo Baker (The Rub), and actor/skater Leo Fitzpatrick (who you may know as Telly from Kids, Johnny Weeks from The Wire, or other places.) That party is totally free to the public with RSVP to email@example.com. Doors open at 10:30 and there will be an open bar until midnight. You must be 21+ to enter.

May 2003 flyer...
Less than a month before Park Slope club Southpaw is gone forever, and Southpaw mainstay DJ team The Rub has announced that after their final party at Southpaw this Saturday (2/4), they're moving to the bigger Bell House down the street (relatively speaking). Read the trio's entire long goodbye to Southpaw, and check out their final Southpaw flyer, below...
Fergus & Geronimo at BV-SXSW in March (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Happy New Year's Eve Eve! We've already given you a list of concerts and parties happening tomorrow and followed that with even more things to do. Some are already sold out (like 285 Kent and Glasslands). Some still have tickets (like Deer Tick). Here we are yet again with some more options.
Fergus & Geronimo are playing The Gutter (12/31) in Brooklyn with NT, My Teenage Stride, and The City Streets. Fergus will reportedly be "headlining at midnight" and "debuting tons of songs from their FUNKY new album." Brooklyn's NT are working on a new record and they've got a new song from it up for free download on bandcamp called "Reflection."
Superhuman Happiness are DJing at Union Pool (12/31) with DJ Partypants and visuals by BAMiAM.tv. As Superhuman Happiness point out on facebook, this is a DJ set and will be a very different show than their live set at Cake Shop TONIGHT (12/30). Tonight's post-Phish late show is a Dog Gone Blog presented show that features special guest Colin Stetson and DJ sets by Dog Gone Blog, Unicorn Pudding, and like tomorrow's Union Pool show, visuals by BAMiAM.tv.
Rub associate Nick Catchdubs is also DJing a New Year's Eve event in Brooklyn, at the Built by MeanRed party at Loreley (12/31) with Jubilee and a surprise guest. Tickets are available.
The Rub will also DJ at Brooklyn Bowl on January 15 for The Freedom Party vs. The Rub. Tickets are on sale.
One more NYE option is Murray Hill's New Year's Eve Extravaganza at Knitting Factory with Dirty Martini, Bridget Everett, Angie Pontani, Neal Medlyn, Trixie Little & Evil Hate Monkey, Amber Martin, and DJ Sirlinda. More expensive VIP tickets are sold out but $45 general admission tickets are still available.

A-Trak @ Fool's Gold Records the store
'This past weekend Fool's Gold record company opened the doors to their brand new retail store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We attended the opening day reception which we got to check out the store's merchandise and actually meet with the Fools Gold artists. In the store people got a chance to meet the founder of the label DJ A-Trak and Fools Gold's newest signee rapper Danny Brown from Detroit. The Fool's Gold Store carries music, clothing and all sorts of Fools Gold memorabilia. There is even a large backyard space which will be used for future events there, make sure you visit the store on 536 Metropolitan Ave. [Jungle Gym]The Fool's Gold store opening party happened on Friday, June 26th. The pictures in this post are from that night. You can also watch a video about the store below. The space, which was already their office for a couple of years, is now a real store and "open Monday-Saturday from noon until 6pm, happily serving all your Fool's Gold music, gear and general swag-related needs."
In somewhat related news, Fool's Gold associates The Rub are celebrating their 9th anniversary on the other side of Brooklyn, at Southpaw tonight (7/2). The party flyer, a video where The Rub guys interview the Fool's Gold guys, a letter from the Rub's Cosmo Baker, and more of the Fool's Gold store pics, below...

It's the first dance post of '09 and regrettably, I have not been out dancing much since the Scion party with Fake Blood, Lifelike, and Franki Chan on December 16th, but next week there will be a review of a great New Years Eve spent with Sinden and Jokers of the Scene (among others) at the soon to be closed Studio B. In the meantime, here are a few great ways to dance straight into 2009....
