Courtney Love at SXSW 2010 (more by Ryan Barkan)

A little while back, we mentioned that Courtney Love would be doing some Northeast shows with Starred this summer. That run of dates has been expanding into a much larger North American tour. You can check out the updated list of dates below.
The NYC-area dates on the tour happen on 6/26 at Warsaw in Brooklyn, 6/27 at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, 6/28 at Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, and 6/29 at The Paramount in Huntington, NY. When we last spoke, it wasn't certain if Starred were on the Capitol Theatre show too, but it's since been confirmed that they are. Tickets for the Cap show and tickets for the other three NYC-area dates are still available.
In related news, Consequence of Sound points to an interview with Bust where Courtney says she's working on a new solo album, which is tentatively titled Died Blonde. Maybe we'll hear some of the new material on this tour? What we can assume is that we probably won't be hearing much Hole material though:
"I've been offered money to do an oldies [tour] sort of thing," she explains. "It's just not me." She's not averse to performing some of Hole's greatest hits, though. "I don't mind making a crowd happy. I still really like 'Malibu.' I play 'Miss World' sometimes. I don't like 'Doll Parts' anymore; it's just a simple song, like three chords, and it kind of drives me nuts." One thing that won't ever happen, she says, is a Hole reunion, "for reasons that I cannot even begin to get into," but then she does get into them, at length. What it comes down to, it seems, is that she has some serious beef with Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson. The demand for the "oldies" is partially why Courtney is choosing to tour under her own name and not as Hole, which she did in support of her 2010 album, Nobody's Daughter, which was released as Hole but featured no other original members besides Courtney. That Bust article also mentions that Courtney is currently looking for a new bassist "in the style of Melissa Auf der Maur" on Craigslist, but not having much luck. "There's just not a lot of chick bass players," she says.
In other news, Courtney Love tweeted at Amanda Bynes, "pull it together dude," to which Amanda responded (but since deleted), "Courtney Love is the ugliest woman I've ever seen, To be mentioned by her at all makes me and all my friends laugh!"
Updated dates are listed, along with a live video from 2012, below...

Say what you will about Courtney Love's solo material or the current state of Hole (not counting their surprise classic lineup reunion at Public Assembly last year), but the first two Hole records are 90s alt-rock classics, and if the lead singer of those albums is heading out on a solo tour, it's at least as notable as Billy Corgan's version of the Smashing Pumpkins touring. We briefly mentioned that Courtney would be doing some NYC-area shows this year, and have since realized they're part of a short Northeast tour she's doing in June.
The tour hits Philly, Boston, and Maryland, before culminating in four NYC-area shows: June 26 at Warsaw in Brooklyn, June 27 at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, June 28 at Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, and June 29 at The Paramount in Huntington. Tickets for the Warsaw show are on sale now, tickets for the Stone Pony/Paramount shows go on sale Friday (5/10) at 10 AM, and tickets for the Cap show go on sale Friday (5/10) at noon.
The Paramount show and the non-NYC-area shows on the tour are with Brooklyn goths Starred, but no openers have been announced for the Warsaw, Cap, and Stone Pony shows yet. Starred's impressive Prison to Prison EP came out last year, and we've since heard new material from them on the Sub Pop 1000 compilation. Their contribution, the dark folk dirge, "Doomed," is one of the standouts on the compilation and the best track I've heard from Starred yet. You can listen to "Doomed" 34 minutes into the full album stream of Sub Pop 1000 below.
UPDATE: Starred have been announced as the openers for the Warsaw and Stone Pony shows as well.
All Courtney Love dates are listed, along with the Sub Pop stream and some classic Hole videos, below...

Hole back together again @ Public Assembly last night (photo via silas howard)

To quote Hole superfan Greg Frederick:
Hole reunites after 15 yrs. at the after party for the release of rockumentary Hit So Hard. based on drummer Patty Schemel who played with past band members Melissa Auf der Maur, Eric Erlandson and Courtney Love as they hit the stage at Public Assembly in Williamsburg, BK. April 14, 2012, 15 Years after last playing music together. You'll remember that the event was advertised as 3/4 of 90's Hole lineup (not to be confused with current day Hole), and I don't think they even knew if Courtney would show up and play a song with them. Watch it happen, Courtney giving a shout-out to the Cribs who were playing Music Hall of Williamsburg next door included, in the video below...Courtney jumps on stage to play Miss World after waiting for Eric to tune her guitar and Patty to find her a strap.
Spoiler alert:
Courtney jumps back on stage for Over The Edge

"Following the opening screening of Hit So Hard and Q&A with Patty Schemel + the filmmakers at Cinema Village, there will be a very special after party at Public Assembly in Williamsburg featuring a performance by Patty, Melissa, and Eric of Hole."In related news, Francis Bean Cobain is mad at Courtney Love.
UPDATE: the Public Assembly event happened, and Courtney showed up!

A STATEMENT FROM FRANCES COBAIN:This all came after "Courtney Love Calls Jason Segel "A Coward" After Muppets/Nirvana Debacle"While I'm generally silent on the affairs of my biological mother, her recent tirade has taken a gross turn. I have never been approached by Dave Grohl in more than a platonic way. I'm in a monogamous relationship and very happy.

In related news, an exhibit of Kurt Cobain photos is up at Morrison Hotel Gallery now.

The Morrison Hotel Gallery says:
We are very excited to present Jesse's amazing Kurt Cobain photographic collection at our SoHo Gallery on April 5th. While earning a degree in economics at the University of Michigan, Jesse Frohman picked up a camera and never put it down. When he returned to New York, he had no formal training or experience, but he did have a portfolio of platinum prints, which caught the interest of legendary photographer Irving Penn, who hired Jesse to manage his studio. The exhibit will be open to the public from April 6th through Aprol 23rd at the 124 Prince Street gallery. It was an incomparable apprenticeship. To the techniques and aesthetics he learned from Penn, Jesse added his own sensibilities of strength, dignity and quiet energy, all of which are evident in his pictures.
Jesse has photographed countless celebrities and still lifes. In addition to his work for magazines, advertising, and recording companies, he has been commissioned to create two award-winning books. His work is also in many private collections.
Jarvis Cocker, Mike Nouveau and others will DJ, along with a live set by the Virgins, at the opening night afterparty at Tribeca Grand, a Grand Life hotel.
Grand Life has an article talks more about the pictures at the gallery (via).
In related news, Courtney Love is planning on auctioning off some paintings made by Kurt Cobain (if she's alllowed), and "Clint Eastwood's 'A Star is Born' Remake is Really About Kurt Cobain" (via).

Crystal Castles @ Don Hill's - 9/12/10 (Nat Ma for Dirty Durty Diary)

So just to recap, the now-renovated Don Hill's reopened for Fashion Week and so far has hosted private shows with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on Thursday, Iggy Pop and The Stooges on Friday, Courtney Love and Hole on Saturday, and (as you can see above) Crystal Castles on Sunday. I'm not sure what happened on Monday, but someone just told me the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are playing there tonight/Tuesday. The Dead Weather played pre-renovation.
Video of Courtney Love covering Lady Gaga on Saturday below...

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club played the Fashion Week party at Don Hill's on Thursday. Iggy Pop and The Stooges played there Friday, and according to the above Tweet by Eli Mizrahi, Courtney Love is playing there tonight.
Eli's Tweet also reminds us that tonight is the John Varvatos's 10th Anniversary party in the store previously known as CBGB. There will be a concert from: 9 p.m. - 2 a.m. Supposedly confirmed performers include Alejandro Escovedo, Alice Cooper, Wayne Kramer, Ian Hunter, ZZ Top, Black Country Communion, Camp Freddy, Cherie Currie, Darling Stillettos, Handsome Dick Manitoba, Jesse Malin & The St. Marks Social, and Perry Farrell . Rumored performers include Iggy Pop and (thanks John) Robert Plant (who plays Bowery Ballroom Sunday).
Who else is playing fashion week parties tonight?

Seventh Void, a band featuring 50% of Type O Negative, cancelled their opening slot at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight in light of Pete Steele's recent passing (Black Water Rising took their place). Seventh Void's debut album was recently released by Big Vin Records aka Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul's record label. Vinnie's brother Dimebag Darrell was murdered on stage right in front of him while they were performing with their post-Pantera band Damageplan in December of 2004. After that Vinnie went on to join "supergroup" Hellyeah (the headliner at Music Hall tonight). Big Vin Records hasn't actually released much. One of their only other CDs is the self-titled Rebel Meets Rebel which is three members of Pantera (Vin and Dimebag included) backing David Allan Coe. Coe plays Music Hall of Williamsburg on June 11th (with Jonny Corndawg opening).
Writer and musician Franklin Bruno appears at Union Hall tonight with his band The Human Hearts ("me + Matt, w/ Pete, above, sitting in for a couple"). "Above" refers to openers Jay Sherman-Godfrey and Pete Galub. "We have new songs, which, by my lights, bite Big Flame, ABC, Code Blue's 'Whisper Touch,' and The Clean. At least one song by a bald post-punk will be covered."
Hole kicked off their trip to NYC with an in-store at Best Buy last night. Tonight is the first of two shows at Terminal 5.

Cruel Black Dove finishes up an April residency at Fontana's tonight. Kurt Braunohler, Dave Hill, and other funny people perform at the LES venue on Wednesday.
Micachu & the Shapes performed at Bruar Falls' one-year anniversary party Saturday night (while the Morning Benders were playing at MHOW). Punkcast video from their performance below...
What else?

But then it all started to slip away, as Ms. Love's abuse of cocaine and prescription pills took a toll. She became a tabloid regular, famous for behavior like flashing her breasts at David Letterman. It was hard to imagine her ever being taken seriously again. "I have lived the worst parts of my life in public," she said earnestly, "and now my band and I have made a relevant record."Hole kicked off the initial four-date US leg of their tour in LA on Thursday (4/22). Coming up, they play two nights at Terminal 5 on April 27th and 28th. Tickets to both NYC shows are still/back on sale at the moment."I went all in," she added. "I bet the farm on this record, which is dangerous, but great in a way, because when you do that, you have nowhere else to go. There is no Plan B."
The challenge is to make the quality of the music eclipse Ms. Love's tabloid celebrity, said David Massey, the president of Mercury. The label gave Ms. Love a multi-album deal just four months ago, before the recording was finished. "The decision to sign the band was entirely music driven," he said. "It's now become such a complete, great record that I'm blown away. One thing that impressed me when I got to know Courtney were her lyrics and ideas. Nobody else is doing such raw, truthful music." [NY Times]
Before those, there will be an acoustic in-store performance at the Best Buy Union Square on Monday, April 26th at midnight (aka when you can buy Hole's new album, Nobody's Daughter, which comes out April 27th). Details on that are below.
The band then heads to Europe before returning to the US for more shows this June. One of those will be a Friday, June 25th gig at NJ's Wellmont Theatre. Tickets go on sale at noon.
The picture above and more below are from the group's appearance at Spin day party at SXSW at Stubb's on March 19th. There are also pics of the other bands that played that show - Rogue Wave, Fucked Up, Miike Snow and Sharon Jones. Those, with the setlist, all tour dates and a teaser video for the record are below...

Tickets just sold right out for Hole's NYC show at Terminal 5 (4/27), so they added a 2nd one (4/28). Tickets will go on sale any minute now are on sale.

Billy Corgan former friend who used to hold a working relationship with Courtney Love is saying that he forbids her to release any songs they worked on together. "[If she does release them] it would be a real big problem, because I haven't given my permission," he tells Rolling Stone. Love has recently reunited her band, Hole for the release of the Nobody's Daughter album, to be released later this year preceded by the single, "Samantha." Corgan continued: "I have no interest in supporting her in any way, shape or form. You can't throw enough things down the abyss with a person like that." [Groovevolt]Tickets are now on AmEx and "radio" presale for the Hole show at Terminal 5 (password = 1019RXP).

There have been a few "big" SXSW-related announcements over the past few weeks. Stone Temple Pilots will be there. Big Star will too. Broken Bells are making a high profile appearance at the NPR show at Stubb's on March 17th (the show Spoon headlines). And... "Hole" is headlining the invite-only SPIN day party at Stubb's on Friday, March 19th. Crazy Courtney Love (who is on the cover of the new SPIN) has an all new band and a new album entitled Nobody's Daughter (out April 27th). If she actually shows up to Austin, as anyone that was at All Points West in 2009 can attest, I'm sure this year's SXSW will be full of Courtney sightings all week long.
It was previously reported that because of founding Hole member Eric Erlandson's legal rights to the band name, the new album would have to be released as a Courtney Love record. That seems to have been resolved. It was also originally/occasionally reported/misreported that bassist Melissa Auf der Maur would be part of the reunion, though that doesn't seem to be the case either. Instead, the lineup for Hole will include "23-year-old British guitarist Micko Larkin (formerly of London indie rockers Larrikin Love), bassist Shawn Dailey (of Rock Kills Kid), and drummer Stuart Fisher. (Jack Irons, formerly of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam, played drums on the album.)"
"Skinny Little Bitch," a track from the new Hole album, is available on the record's site today (3/4) only.
After SXSW, Hole has shows scheduled in L.A., NYC and the UK in April and May. The band plays Terminal 5 on Tuesday, April 27nd. Tickets are on sale Friday, March 12th at noon.
All tour dates, a recent Hole TV performance and the new song are below...

Courtney Love (and Ultragrrrl?) @ All Points West - Aug 1, 2009 (by Tim Griffin)

I walked by Courtney Love at All Points West on Saturday (8/1), and thought, "That was Courtney Love. No it wasn't." Then I forgot until someone else later said, "I saw Courtney Love", and then someone else... That's when I thought, "I guess it was Courtney Love". She's been tweeting including the above picture of Echo and the Bunnymen who are on the stage as I type this (right on, or slightly behind, schedule).

You can buy tickets for the Rriiccee show at the Green Room on December 7th. Rriiccee's four members (pictured above) are Vincent Gallo, Rebecca Casabian, Nikolas Haas, and Eric Erlandson from Hole.
Speaking of Hole, have you been keeping with Courtney Love's blog? If not, you're missing out on stuff like,
its not dexactly cake to get tebh fbi to help u despite heaps and masses of documents they had the nerve to leave behind the ftc helping you is bogus too, they dont do JACK whats your best suggestion for clearing up old id theft but MASSIVE old id theft open corps you knew nothing about bogus tax stuff...[Courtney]Look what's out now on DVD:
Mixed in surround sound by legendary surround mixing engineer Elliot Scheiner, this DVD allows fans to experience this performance like never before, completely unedited including the two songs not originally broadcasted ("Something In The Way" and "Oh Me" ), and with the best sound ever available (to anyone not in the studio for the original taping.) For the purists, also included on this DVD is the original 44 min broadcast version of the show, plus never-before-seen REHEARSAL performances. As an extra bonus to the DVD, a 14-minute interview segment called Bare Witness produced by MTV focuses on the recollections of those who experienced this magical moment in music history, those who produced it and interviews with the band from the day of the taping. It seems to be selling well for a music DVD, but still not nearly as popular as Planet Earth.
Kurt Cobain was funny. Foo Fighters are playing some shows.

Happened 1 day ago.....

"...Post show we could all just relax–had an amazing time at the CSS show where both Peaches and Paris Hilton were shimmying around. They were hilarious in the best way (CSS that is)......After that we went to see Air who it seems never showed up. Well they were a half hour late by the time we threw our hands up to the air (yuk yuk) and left. Earlier in the evening a funny thing happened to the ladies and man of CSS. Out of nowhere with an authoritative strut Courtney Love appeared in the artist area and barged into the CSS trailer. At that point I assume she’s a fan and I continue on my merry way to get some water and meet up with the band. Little did I know she was just was looking for shelter and picked the closest trailer. Apparently she came in, said 'I need this trailer' and asked 'Who are you?' CSS proceeded to explain. She looked bewildered and left soon after." [Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear for Rolling Stone]Tickets are still on sale for CSS' show at Irving Plaza (Fillmore) on June 1st. More photos below....
