The Stepkids
Stepkids

Is it too late to say Happy New Year to all of you out there? Probably. Okay, nevermind. It is a New Year though, and the rock machine is already in full swing. If you haven't spent all your money on tickets to the chickfactor fest (I can't tell you how psyched I am to see Small Factory) there's some good options.

Top of my list this weekend is the previously mentioned Stepkids show at Knitting Factory on Saturday (1/14). Their self-titled debut made my Favorite Albums of 2011 list (#36) and don't feel it got enough attention. I wrote:

Like The Bees, The Stepkids recreate a specific era of sound -- early '70s psychedelic soul -- with such skill you might think it was some obscure Fifth Dimension album or outtakes from Psychedelic Shack. That it works beyond an exercise is mimicry shows how talented these three are.
And they are crazy talented. All three members write and sing and spent time playing with the likes of Alicia Keys, Lauren Hill and 50 Cent before deciding to take a stranger path in music. I do wish they'd make a 15-piece Stepkids Love Unlimited Orchestra so they could really do the complexities of the album justice in a live setting, but what they accomplish as a trio is still pretty damn impressive. (A killer light show helps in that department.) They were great when they played our day party at Public Assembly during CMJ week during which we taped them doing an acoustic cover of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box" which you can watch at the bottom of this post. Also down there is the Tom Sharpling-directed video for "Legend in My Own Mind" which is pretty funny.

Cuckoo Chaos
Cuckoo Chaos

Opening for The Stepkids are San Diego band Cuckoo Chaos who also play Friday (1/13) at Mercury Lounge with Country Mice. The band have toured with Anna Calvi and were last in town during CMJ. The band play an appealing take on afrobeat-y indie rock with nice harmonies. I do really like their song "Just Ride It" which is downloadable at the top of this post. If you like that one, check out their album Woman (listen on Spotify, buy at eMusic) and consider going to one of their shows this weekend.

Radical Dads at Brooklyn Night Bazaar, December 2011
Radical Dads

A few spots above the Stepkids on my Albums of 2011 list (#29) is Radical Dads' debut, Mega Rama, which is nine tasty chunks of shouty/catchy indie rock wrapped up in one of my favorite sleeves of the year. They're also a total blast live, as evidenced by anyone who showed up early to the BV-presented show at Brooklyn Night Bazaar last month.

You've got your first chance to catch Radical Dads in 2012, as previously mentioned, Friday night (1/13) where they play Cameo Gallery. The whole evening's card is pretty stacked with local talent. Also playing are mellow folk pop band Backwords (stream their new album below), the sloppy pop of Moonmen on the Moon, Man and the electro-tinged stylings of Yanqui.

King Krule, last night at Mercury Lounge
King Krule at Mercury Lounge, 1.11.2012

I would mention the King Krule shows happening this weekend but as they're all sold out, you're either going or you're not. I thought he was good when I saw him at Glasslands during CMJ. He looks even younger in person, but that voice seems to be from someone 30 years older. Anyway, a few more weekend picks are below, day-by-day....

After a quiet day, there's no shortage of excellent evening shows for this first night of CMJ 2011. There are just my suggestions -- check CMJ's much-improved (though still not quite helpful enough) schedule for a full rundown of official showcases.

After studying the schedule, my pick for single showcase of the night is the Lefse Records/Banter/Waaga showcase at Pianos which has more than a couple bands of interest on the bill. Among them: Denver duo Gauntlet Hair whose album is out today on Dead Oceans, featuring some densely-layerd ANCO-inspired pop. (Check out an MP3 at the top of this post.) Also playing: San Diego's Cuckoo Chaos whose song "Just Ride It" has stayed in rotation on my stereo for a while now. (You can d/l that above too.) There's also laptop Canadian Teen Daze (who maybe you caught at the Creators Project), Chicago's A Lull, Atlanta's terrific Balkans, and the blissed-out Sun Glitters. It may not have the biggest names on the bill of any show tonight, but who knows where many of them will be in six months? $10 without a CMJ badge.

Dent May

Coming a close second...Public Assembly, a club no one ever seems to go to for shows in non-festival times, has one of the most solid weeks of any venue in the city. (I'm not just saying that because BV has day shows there Friday and Saturday, either.) Tonight the front room is the Car Park/Paw Tracks showcase with icy synth queen Class Actress, Southern charmer Dent May, Cleveland power-poppers Cloud Nothings, plus Young Magic, Adventure and Light Asylum side project Jimmy Whispers. In the back room, it's the Mexican Summer showcase with the goth-electro of Light Asylum, West Coast droners Date Palms, Boston indie folk act Quilt, plus Radio People, Home Blitz and Xander Duell.

Wild Flag

Meanwhile, Merge Records is at Bowery Ballroom for what will be one of the more difficult shows for badgeholders to get into, as supergroup Wild Flag are headliners. It's sold out but they're letting in "limited badges" so if you have one, go early to A) make sure you get in, and B) to see the wonderful Hospitality whose teriffic debut album comes out on Merge in January. In between, Eleanor Friedberger, making for a fine evening of female-fronted music.

At Glasslands, our pals at Stereogum and Popgun are throwing a party with a slew of cool band they've already told you you need to see. Such bands as anthemic Jersey dudes Titus Andronicus, the instrumental magic of Delicate Steve, the nu goth sounds of Chelsea Wolfe, '90s indie rock lovers Mr. Dream, crazy catchy Canadians Holerado, and Cuckoo Chaos.   $15 with RSVP. and if you have a CMJ badge you get a discount of some sort (wither badgeholders' privilege).

At Cameo, the very helpful show listing site Oh My Rockness is having their showcase which also doubles as a 7th Birthday party for the site. (Remember when you had to rely on Village Voice ads to find out when shows were happening?) It's a good line-up, too with eager beavers Dive, slinky tribal sounds of Zambri, nouveau synth poppers Adventure, Chad Valley, Even Voytas, Headless Horseman and Wise Blood. $8 if you don't have a badge.

You've got a couple opportunities to see underrated UK act The Duke Spirit tonight, both of which are free whether you have a badge or not.

Foreign Resort
Foreign Resort

If you're into gloomy postpunk a la The Chameleons or early Bunnymen, you might want to head to Lit Lounge to catch The Foreign Resort (8PM) who do that sound pretty well. You can check out a stream at the bottom of this post.

Dovecote Records is having a CMJ Kickoff party at Club Norwood tonight, with the very hotly-tipped Araabmusik, plus Supreme Cuts. 9PM. RSVP by emailing RSVP@DOVECOTERECORDS.COM but there's no gauranteed entry. Go early. Flyer below.

In the world of unofficial shows, at 285 Kent we've got San Francisco's awesome Grass Widow, plus NYC/Memphis duo Coasting, Air Waves and Baybee Teeth.

What are YOU going to see tonight? Flyers, streams and set times are after the jump.

Anna Calvi @ Bowery Ballroom
Anna Calvi

"...when Anna Calvi coaxed slinky licks, sweeping chords, and gasping runs out of her Telecaster, I couldn't help but smile. She can really play -- she leaves no room for questions of authenticity. she's there, and she's doing it, bringing a sensuality and nuance to her guitar playing that stands her apart from a lot of guitarists, both male and female." [Broken & the Blessed]
As promised in the post that mentioned David Byrne was in the audience, here are pictures from Anna Calvi's Wednesday night show at Bowery Ballroom with Cuckoo Chaos and She Keeps Bees. More of them below.

Anna and Cuckoo are now still on tour, and Anna's NYC return has already been announced. Tickets are on sale for a July 27th show at Le Poisson Rouge. That's three days before Anna plays Osheaga in Montreal.

Highlights of Anna's Bowery set included her covers of both Elvis's "Surrender", and Edith Piaf's "Jezebel". Videos of both (one from the Bowery show, one from a previous show), with more pictures and tour dates, below...

Anna Calvi in Brighton
Anna Calvi

"Calvi was midway through a lean eight song set when I entered, but I was utterly spellbound for the four songs I caught. 'Desire' was a particularly stirring highlight from the singer who has recently recovered from a serious hand injury to be back on guitar playing duty, providing inspired flamenco-inspired flourishes to her otherworldly brand of Banshees-esque goth-pop. Her lips curling around harsh consonants provided subtle breaks to her commanding and powerful vocal, which was offset beautifully against her charmingly dainty asides. Her presence and poise was there for all to see, though this is no idle hype; Calvi will be a real force to reckon with and I await her further output with baited breath." [Skiddle]
Anna Calvi joined Handsome Furs, EMA, Warpaint, Okkervil River, and too many more to name at the UK festival The Great Escape over the weekend. Anna's set took place at Brighton venue Komedia on Friday. The above review and the pictures in this post are from that show (and even more pictures from The Great Escape can be found at the BV Facebook page).

Now Anna Calvi is about to kick off her post-injury North American tour with a show in Philadelphia before heading to NYC to play Bowery Ballroom on 5/25 with Cuckoo Chaos and She Keeps Bees. Tickets for the NYC show are still available, and you can try your luck at winning a pair! Details on how to enter our contest are under her full list of tour dates below.

In April Anna played a show in Paris that you can watch in full online.

Cuckoo Chaos is a 5-piece San Diego Lefse-signed band comprised of "players from other bands including The Vision of a Dying World, The Paddle Boat, Black Mamba, and Cousins." They've appropriately tagged their own Bandcamp page with "tropcal hipster jams," and they'll be on the road with Anna from NYC to San Francisco. Show up early to check them out. All dates, more Brighton pics, and the contest details, below...
