Cult of Luna / Kylesa
Sweden's metal boundary-pushers Cult of Luna had to cancel a short North American tour back in May, but they're finally here now and kicked off their run with the great Kylesa at NYC's Gramercy Theatre last night (9/1). They stuck mostly to their latest album, 2013's Vertikal, but worked in older favorites like "Dark City, Dead Man" too. Kylesa have a new LP on the way, which they gave us one off of ("Shaping the Southern Sky"), and otherwise they mixed it up pretty well between their previous four. The show was opened by InAeona. More pictures, and CoL and Kylesa's setlists, below.

Cult of Luna support same sex marriage
Swedish post-metallers Cult of Luna were supposed to tour North America in May, but they cancelled and said the tour would be rescheduled for September. The official announcement on that tour
is still TBA, but several of the dates have been revealed.
UPDATE: Full tour announced, and the Kylesa leg also includes InAeona.
The NYC date happens on September 1 at Gramercy Theatre, the same location they would have played in May. But this one's even better, because the great genre-crossing Kylesa is on board too. Tickets for NYC go on sale Friday (7/3) at 10 AM with Live Nation/Music Geeks presales starting Wednesday (7/1) at 10 AM. All currently known CoL dates are listed below.
Kylesa are also on the west coast/southwest leg of The Fall of Troy's Doppelganger tour. The east coast leg has And So I Watch You From Afar and Slothrust, and hits NYC on September 17 at Webster Hall. Tickets for that show are still available.
All Cult of Luna and Kylesa dates are listed, with a couple videos, below...
Swedish post-metal band Cult of Luna were supposed to go on a three-date North American tour this week hitting Montreal, NYC and the Psycho California festival, but unfortunately the whole thing was cancelled. The band made a video explaining the cancellation (visa issues), which you can watch here. On the bright side though, they say there's a September tour TBA soon with stops in LA, Toronto, Montreal, NYC and more, and Psycho California tickets will be honored at all dates. Stay tuned for more details.

Tickets for that fest are on sale, full lineup below.
Full tour schedule, a video, and the Psycho California lineup, below...
At the end of 2013, Swedish post-metal greats Cult of Luna announced they'd be slowing down. The future of the band seemed pretty vague, but it didn't sound like they were breaking up or anything either. And they certainly aren't, because the band have announced that they'll return to North America for a tour this spring. However, true to their word, it's not the kind of extensive touring the band used to do. They write:
We know there's going to be questions for more shows in north america but unfortunately we'll only do three shows this time. That is it and it's final. The tour hits Montreal, NYC and Santa Ana in May. The NYC show happens 5/14 at Gramercy Theatre, and tickets for that one go on sale at 10 AM on Friday (1/30) with Live Nation/Music Geeks presales (password: musicgeeks) starting at 10 AM on Wednesday (1/28). Full tour schedule below.

Swedish post-metallers Cult of Luna have consistently kept themselves busy since their inception in 1998. Over that 14-year period, they've released six LPs (including this year's Vertikal), two DVDs, a live album, and an EP, on top of countless tour dates.
All that building and crescendo-ing would tire any band out, and Cult of Luna are no exception. Earlier today, they announced -- or implied, given the oblique nature of the comment -- via their Facebook that they would be taking a hiatus from their busy schedule after next year's Beyond the Redshift Fest in the UK (which they're curating):
"The Beyond the redshift festival in London on may the 10th will be a very special show for Cult of Luna. It will mark the end of an era and after that we will slowly disappear before we reappear again in some form in some indefinite future. They clarified a bit a few hours later:
Because of that Klas will join us on stage for the last time and we will play a whole lot of old songs which we haven't played for years or ever. We might ask for your help to choose songs. More on that later."
We are not quitting. 2013 have been a very active year for us and neither do we want or think it is good to continue in that pace. We will not be a band that put out an album every 18-24 month anymore. We did that for almost 10 years when we were younger and were able to focus more on the music. After "Beyond the redshift" we might do a festival or two but after that we have nothing planned. Maybe we'll release another album next year or maybe in a decade, we honestly don't know. Sooner or later we will return in one form or another. Cult of Luna will not die.So there you have it, however ambiguous and non-specific "it" may be. It might not quite be right to say that Cult of Luna have "gone on hiatus," given that the band hasn't specifically said that they're halting all activity. But at the very least, we can expect to hear a lot less from them after May of this coming year.
On another note, sooner or later we will go through our inbox and email. You will be answered.
Stream Vertikal below if you haven't checked it out yet...
Decibel Magazine is back with its annual top 40 albums of the year list. Two of the top three (including the #1 spot) are reunion albums from death metal veterans, though many younger bands place highly as well. And the one metal album we can safely expect on many non-metal lists, Deafheaven, makes it on there too.

Katatonia's last visit with Opeth wasn't that long ago, but they will return to our shores for a set of North American dates with Cult of Luna, Intronaut and Tesseract. Look for that tour to hit Irving Plaza on September 24. Tickets go on sale Aug 9 at noon.
The dates are in celebration of their new album, Dethroned and Uncrowned, due via Kscope on 9/10. The LP was the subject of a recent crowdsourcing campaign (the band reached their goal).

After an opening track that seems like a Vangelis leftover from the Blade Runner soundtrack, Cult of Luna tear into their signature post-hardcore sludge sound on the new LP, Vertikal. We previously featured a track from the album but now you can hear the record in its entirety below, for the first time.
Look for the album via Indie Recordings in the EU on Friday (1/25), and Density next week (1/29) in the States. Stream it below, alongside all (EU) tour dates.

My favorite of the two Oceans, the one missing a definite article in front of their name (Ocean of Maine), will be the next heavy band to headline Show No Mercy at Public Assembly (Feb 15th). As part of some sort of bizarre doom-off, Ocean will try to out rumble and underpace the mighty Salome, Riff Cannon, and Batillus who are also on board for the (anti-) festivities. Both Ocean (profiled here) and Salome (who we profiled in August) released full-length LPs last year... Pantheon of The Lesser and S/T respectively. Riff Cannon will drop their debut LP in 2009 and Batillus recently made their new self-titled EP available for free download here.
Speaking of Salome, lead vocalist Kat will make her first Agoraphobic Nosebleedappearance on Agorapocalypse, the latest LP from Scott Hull's pummeling grindcore project. Due April 14th, Agorapocalypse won't be the lone AnB in 2009; the band plans a series of splits for this year with a wide array of bands including Despise You, ANS, Agents of Satan and Thrones!
Mayhem, Marduk, Cattle Decapitation, and Cephalic Carnage have added a date together in Seattle Washington @ Studio Seven on June 5th. Pleasegodletitbeafulltour... Pleasegodletitbeafulltour... Cattle Decapitation's The Harvest Floor dropped on Jan 20th.

Ahhh... NOW I know why 1349 are heading out on tour.... Revelations Of The Black Flame is the name of the recently announced new album by the black metallers! Recorded at StudioStudio Nyhagen in Bøverbru, Norway, 1349 have enlisted Tom Gabriel Fischer to help man the boards! Look for it sometime this spring. Meanwhile, Tom Gabriel Fischer's new venture post-Celtic Frost, Triptykon, is currently in the demo phase. 1349 will be at BB Kings on March 2nd, tickets are available here.

Ya hear that rumble? Thats the sound of great records perched in the distance waiting to descend on 2009 (more on that later). While this year will bring about great music and another set of "next big things", let's take the time to be thankful for 2008 and all of it's memorable records and shows. Here are my favorite records of 2008:

Cult Of Luna @ Roadburn 2008 (gorgogol)
Roadburn (April 23-26th, 2009 in Tilburg, Holland) announced more bands to an already impressive festival... one that sold out in 45 minutes when tickets went on sale Saturday! Walter Hoeijmakers / Roadburn comments:
"We still can't believe that the 2009 festival sold out so quickly. It was utter mayhem when the tickets went on sale last Saturday. Many of the tickets were gone before the regular Roadburn attendees realized that sales had even started. Unfortunately, about 150 to 200 tickets are currently being sold through secondary ticket outlets for prices up to $350. We feel very badly that Roadburn can't prevent this from happening. Please be very aware that some of these scalpers may sell fake tickets."We already knew of Neurosis and their Beyond The Pale Festival with Young Gods & A Storm Of Light, the maaajor addition of the reuniting Saint Vitus and Amon Duul II, followed by Baroness & Minsk, and then Om... but now the entire line-up has been revealed including the additions of Wolves In The Throne Room (who also played 2008 - stream that here), Ufomammut, Church Of Misery (who have a new EP and also played 2008), Burial Hex, Gnaw Their Tongues, Alexander Tucker, and many many many others.
