More details have finally been announced for the Arthur Russell tribute album thatt he Red Hot organization is putting out. The album's being released on YepRoc on October 21, and is now titled Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell (it was initially announced that it'd be called This Is How We Walk on the Moon). The acts involved -- Hot Chip, Robyn, Blood Orange, Jose Gonzalez, Sufjan Stevens, VEGA INTL (aka Neon Indian's Alan Palomo) and many more -- are as diverse as Russell's work, which included heartbreaking acoustic/cello ballads and ahead-of-it's-time dance music.

The compilation is the latest in the benefit album series for Red Hot, which has been raising AIDS and HIV awareness for nearly 25 years, and has put out Dark Was the Night, Red Hot + Rio and many others.

Full tracklist, plus a behind-the-scenes video with Hot Chip (who cover "Go Bang" by Russell's group Dinosaur L) and a YouTube mix of classic Russell tracks, below...

Hudson Project 2014 (via er_duh)
Hudson Project

Inaugural upstate NY music festival The Hudson Project went down this weekend (Friday, July 11 - Sunday, July 13) and seemed to get off to a good start with positive reviews of Kendrick Lamar, The Flaming Lips and more, but eventually things to a little sour. Daily Freeman reported that dozens were arrested on drug charges, and though the bit of rain on Saturday didn't put too much of a damper on the festival, the weather on Sunday caused the rest of that day to be cancelled. From a press release that went out yesterday afternoon:

Festival-goers were evacuated this afternoon (Sunday, July 13 at 4:45 PM, ET) from the event grounds and were directed by staff and New York State, Ulster County and Saugerties town officials to seek shelter in vehicles until the storm safely passed. "Our first priority is always the safety of our fans, artists and staff," said Jonathan Fordin, partner of MCP Presents, the promoter behind THE HUDSON PROJECT. "We regret having to cancel any performance, but safety always comes first."
This caused sets from Action Bronson, Cults, STRFKR, Bassnectar and more to be cancelled. Did you go to any of the three days? What was your experience like?

The first year of The Hudson Project was partially to "replace" MCP Presents' other festival, Camp Bisco, which took 2014 off. Bisco promises to be back in 2015 though.

Watch a video of The Flaming Lips at the festival, below...

OLLA

Jim Jarmusch's new film, Only Lovers Left Alive, stars Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as two vampires whose relationship spans centuries. (Twilight or Vampire Academy, it ain't.) The film made its US debut at the 2013 New York Film Festival and will see actual release on April 11 in select cities. You can check out the trailer below.

The soundtrack to the film is unsurprisingly pretty interesting and is orchestrated by Jarmusch's frequent musical collaborator, Jozef van Wissem. It features collaborations with SQÜRL (Carter Logan, Jim Jarmusch, and Shane Stoneback), Zola Jesus, Lebanese singer/actress Yasmine Hamdan (who is in the film), and Cults singer Madeline Follin, the latter of whom provides vocals on a heavy, trippy cover of Wanda Jackson's classic "Funnel of Love." You can stream the whole soundtrack (via Dazed Digital) below.

Speaking of, Cults have a few dates lined up over the next few weeks, including NYC at Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 6. Shoe company Steve Madden is sponsoring and it's FREE but you do need to get your no-charge tickets through Ticketmaster and are available starting at noon today (2/14). No openers have been announced for the MHOW show, but most of the other dates are with their old tourmates Mood Rings. All Cults tour dates are listed below...

Rough Trade NYC (more by Amanda Hatfield)
RTNYC

We just mentioned that Rough Trade's live shows are "on hold for a while" due to sound issues at the venue, and while some (like tonight's Tourist show) are being moved, others, like Andrew Bird (12/6) and DIIV (12/7), The Stepkids (12/9), Lucius (12/10) and Au Revoir Simone (12/17) have unfortunately been cancelled. Refunds are available at the point of purchase.

Other updates via Rough Trade's Twitter: Childish Gambino's show on Sunday, 12/8 at 6PM has been moved to Music Hall of Williamsburg but you still need to buy a copy of his new CD at the store that day to get a wristband.

Allah Las (12/6), Langhorne Slim / Felice Bros (12/11), and Cults (12/18) have been postponed. Stay tuned for updates on where those shows end up.

Mood Rings

Atlanta's Mood Rings released their long-in-the-works debut album, VPI Harmony, earlier this year and it's one of 2013's better dream pop albums, floating somewhere in the haze between Cocteau Twins style ethereal guitar wash and more sultry beat driven songs. It also contains one of my favorite songs of the year, "The Line," which if you haven't heard yet you can listen below. The band's tour with Cults wraps up tonight (11/26) here in NYC at Webster Hall which is sold out. If you have tickets, do get there early and check them out.

Mood Rings' main man William Fussell was kind enough to reflect on 2013, delivering his Top Ten Things of the Year. Only of one of which is an album. Check out his list below...

J Cole

J. Cole has been doing a fair amount of touring this year for his newest album Born Sinner -- which if nothing else, spawned the Miguel-featuring "Power Trip" single, one of the catchiest rap songs of the year -- and he's just announced another North American run for 2014. The new dates include another NYC show happening on January 28 at The Theatre at Madison Square Garden. Tickets for that show are on fan presale now and general on-sale starts Friday (11/15) at 10 AM. All dates are listed below.

The newest Born Sinner single is "She Knows," which features Dirty Projector Amber Coffman and samples Cults' "Bad Things". Cole just played the song on Letterman this week, and you can watch that video, along with the list of tour dates, below...

Voodoo
Voodoo
Voodoo

"Voodoo festival-goers came from far and wide to see some of the best talent music has to offer.

Big names like Kid Rock and legendary rock group Nine Inch Nails brought Tyler Livings to the event.

"It is my first time out here. I have heard a lot of good things about it and seemed like a good event to go to with a lot of good music. I wanted to see what it was all about," he said.

One curveball, some hoped to get one-day passes, but that option sold out on Halloween, leaving the more expensive weekend pass as the only option.
It wasn't a dealer breaker for some, just an inconvenience." [WWLTV]

Nine Inch Nails, who recently announced they're appearing on ACL TV and who visited Barclays Center in Brooklyn earlier on the tour, were the big headliners of the the second day of Voodoo Fest 2013. Pearl Jam played the night before, and The Cure close things out on Sunday.

Other sets on Saturday included Cults, Reignwolf, The Gaslight Anthem, Alkaline Trio, Paramore and rapper F. Stokes who also stopped by the Soundwave tent to play a set for us right after Cults did the same. Pictures from the whole day are in this post. More below...

Dave Hill & Billy Jones will reunite in New Orleans (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Soundwave

Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, and The Cure co-headline the Voodoo festival in New Orleans this weekend. Anamanaguchi, Those Darlins, The Gaslight Anthem, F. Stokes, Matt & Kim, Cults, Jingle Punks Hipster Orchestra and many more will also play sets as part of the New Orleans-music heavy, but eclectic 3-day lineup. Check out the full festival schedule.

This is also the 5th and final festival of 2013 that you'll find a Toyota Soundwave tent where BrooklynVegan, SPIN and Purevolume will be set up all weekend with host Dave Hill, BrooklynVegan co-host Billy Jones, and a full schedule of additional live interviews and sets that you won't find on the festival's main schedule.

Stop by today/Friday to catch a live interview with Anamanaguchi at 2:30 and one with Preservation Hall Jazz Band at 4:00, right before a live set by Those Darlins. Saturday Cults play a set at 1pm before rapper F. Stokes takes our stage. Sunday we get a set by Jingle Punks Hipster Orchestra shortly after their earlier bigger stage show.

When festival artists aren't playing or talking to us, Dave Hill and Billy Jones will be telling jokes and spinning tunes. Please stop by and heckle them, and check out our full Soundwave schedule below...

Omar Souleyman @ Le Poisson Rouge - 10/16/13 (via @linyeezy)
Omar Souleyman

Syrian pop singer Omar Souleyman is in NYC for CMJ for this week, and he just played the NPR showcase at Le Poisson Rouge last night (10/16), which also featured sets from rapper Pusha T, indie pop band Cults, and DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad (of A Tribe Called Quest). Did you go to the show? How was it? For those who weren't in attendance, NPR streamed the whole thing live, and they'll be hosting an archive of the full show soon, so stay tuned for that.

Omar Souleyman's only other CMJ show is the BrooklynVegan day party on Friday (10/18) (happening a venue to be announced VERY soon) with The Head and the Heart (acoustic), Speedy Ortiz, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, Hookworms, Eagulls, and Kirin J Callinan. The party runs from noon to 6 PM and Omar's on at 4:15. It's totally FREE (no badge, no RSVP), and we hope to see you there! More info here. Right after CMJ, Omar begins a European tour (Pitchfork Paris included), and all dates on that tour are listed below.

The tour and his CMJ appearances are in support of his new album, Wenu Wenu, which comes out next week (10/22) via Domino affiliate Ribbon Music. The record was produced entirely by electronic wizard Four Tet (who also just dropped his own album), who gives it a sharper edge than some of Omar's earlier work but without changing his sound or Westernizing it. You can stream the full album at NPR.

All dates are listed, along with a stream of the album's title track and a live video, below...

Pusha T
Pusha T

Pusha T spent most of the '00s as one half of respected hip hop duo Clipse, and more recently he's struck out on his own, releasing multiple mixtapes, and becoming a frequent Kanye collaborator. This week (10/8), he finally put out his first official solo album, My Name Is My Name, which was produced almost entirely (and executive produced) by Kanye West. You can hear hints of Yeezus in the production, but while 'Ye used his own record to see how far he could push the boundaries of hip hop, for this one he keeps his beautiful dark twisted fantasies within the classicist realm of the genre. 2 Chainz and Big Sean, who are becoming the dynamic duo of goofy guest verses, show up to lighten the mood on "Who I Am," The-Dream gives Pusha a dose of PBR&B (sorry) on "40 Acres," and Kendrick Lamar appears in characteristic game-murdering mode on what may be the album's best track, "Nosetalgia." You can watch the video for "Nostetalgia" (via NPR), along with a full stream of the album (via Myspace), below.

Pusha T is about to go on a UK tour with collaborators Chase & Status, but before that he'll play a couple US dates, including NPR's CMJ showcase, which happens on October 16 at Le Poisson Rouge. The rest of the lineup is stacked, including Syrian pop star Omar Souleyman (who has a new Four Tet-produced album on the way), NYC pop duo Cults (who have other shows too), and a DJ set from A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shaheed Muhammad (who also DJed last year's NPR CMJ showcase). The show is free with RSVP, which opens today (10/10). Check @NPRHipHop and @NPRMusic for updates. If you can't make it, you can also watch the live stream on NPR Music.

All Pusha T dates are listed, along with the video and LP stream, below...

Cults at Governors Ball 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Cults

Poppy NYC duo Cults are set to go on a fall tour that includes a hometown show on November 26 at Webster Hall (tickets), but sooner than that you can catch them at a much smaller show.

During CMJ, they'll headline a Conflict of Interest party at Brooklyn Bowl on October 15 with special guests TBA. It's a free show, as long as you either have a CMJ badge, or if you RSVP.

Cults' new album, Static, comes out the day of the Brooklyn Bowl show via Columbia, and you can now stream it in full on NPR. Updated dates are listed, along with the video for its track "High Road," below.

Since we last spoke, Atlanta dream pop band Mood Rings (whose debut LP, VPI Harmony, came out this year via Mexican Summer) were added, along with SACCO, as openers to Cults tour, including the Webster Hall show. This also means Mood Rings have dropped off the Cymbals Eat Guitars tour, which they were supposed to be on. That tour still hits NYC without Mood Rings on 11/23 at Knitting Factory with Grooms and Daniel James taking their place (tickets).

Mood Rings aren't on Cults' Brooklyn Bowl show, but they do have their own CMJ shows scheduled, including the Carpark/Mexican Summer/Kanine showcase at Cameo (10/16) with Eternal Summers, TEEN, Quilt, Bleeding Rainbow, and Happy Jawbone (tickets); the unofficial Newtown Radio party at Shea (10/16) with Canadian rapper Young Braised, plus Christines, Calvin Love, and Rose Quartz DJs; and a free show at Ace Hotel (10/17).

All Mood Rings dates are listed, along with the list of Cults dates and that video, below...

Cults

New York duo Cults are set to return this fall with their second album, Static, due out October 15 on Columbia. While keeping the sugary hooks, Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin have expanded the scope of their sound. Is there such a thing as epic twee? You can check out an album trailer that features snippets of a couple songs and stream "I Can Hardly Make You Mine" in full, below.

The band are also going on tour which culminates in a NYC show at Webster Hall on November 26. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (8/23) at noon. All tour dates are listed below.

As discussed, Voodoo Experience is going down from November 1-3 in New Orleans this year, and since we last spoke, the lineup was expanded to include The Cure, Matt & Kim, Anamanaguchi, Rudimental and more. Those additions join previously announced names like Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Desaparecidos and more. Tickets for the festival are still available.

Updated lineup below...

people waiting to get in Sunday morning (via)
GoogaMooga

They really thought they were going to open today. They even announced that more tickets were being released today and that James Murphy, following in Sharon Jones's footsteps, had cancelled his performance today due to a family emergency. But the rain has won, and the second day of the 2nd GoogaMooga is now officially CANCELLED. The people pictured above waiting to get in today are probably especially upset.

Official reason: "NYC Parks Dept, Prospect Park Alliance & #Googamooga have canceled today's event in the interest of safety & prevention of damage to park."

All Sunday VIP ticket purchases will be refunded in full.

Bands and DJS that were supposed to play today included Delicate Steve, Cults, De La Soul, Kool & the Gang (instead of Sharon Jones), Nancy Whang & Pat Mahoney (instead of James Murphy), and M.A.K.U. Sound System.

Stay tuned for our pictures from Friday and Saturday, coming soon. Meanwhile watch a channel 12 video report that was filmed in the park early Saturday (it claims GoogaMooga will be back "bigger and better in 2014"), and a video of the Flaming Lips playing "You Lust" on Friday (you can hear people screaming "Vaseline, Vaseline!"), below...

A still from 'Mistaken for Strangers'
Mistaken for Strangers

The National, who'll headline the Barclays Center in June, are the subject of a new tour documentary, Mistaken for Strangers, which will make its premiere at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival (April 17 - 28). The film was directed by Tom Berninger, whose brother Matt is lead singer of The National. Here's the synopsis:

Adrift in life and fuelled by the desire to create, Tom Berninger accepts his brother's offer to come on The National tour as a roadie and decides to chronicle his experiences with the band. Although Tom starts off with dreams of making a rock documentary (you can watch the portaits he made on each of the band members), a different story emerges as tensions among the band members lead to unforeseen drama. Following the band from Berlin to Paris to Los Angeles to a 2010 Obama rally in Madison, Wisconsin, Mistaken for Strangers is not your typical road documentary.
The film will screen on April 17 and will be followed by a special live performance by The National.

Festival packages go on sale to AmEx cardholders on Monday (3/4), which is one day before the entire slate of films for Tribeca will be announced. Festival passes go on sale to the general public following Monday (3/11). Individual tickets will go on sale 4/9 for AmEx cardholders, 4/14 for downtown residents and 4/15 to the general public.

In related news, The National are co-headlining (with fun.) the Boston Calling Music Festival which goes down in Beantown on May 25 and 26. The fest also includes appearances by The Shins, Of Monsters & Men, Dirty Projectors, Andrew Bird and more. Tickets to Boston Calling go sale Friday, March 8 and the whole line-up is below.

Antlers

Sleigh Bells with Grizzly Bear (who played Bowery earlier in the week), The Antlers and Cults played 4 Artists 1 Cause, a Hurricane Sandy benefit on Friday (2/14) at Terminal 5. According to reports from the Har Mar Superstar-hosted show, they raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $300k towards Sandy relief efforts. Pictures from that show are in this post below.

Richie Follin of Cults spent the next night (12/15) at Knitting Factory as part of Guards. Meanwhile, The Antlers are offering up an early holiday gift to fans in the form of a cello-driven cover of their song "No Windows" by their friend Brent Arnold. You stream that below, along with more pics from T5...

Guards

Guards are gearing up for the release of their debut album, In Guards We Trust, which will be out February 5. A couple tastes from the album are ready to scoop into now -- the new single "Coming True" is streamable below, as is the video for "Silver Lining." If you like "whoa-ohs" and instantly sing-a-long choruses (they're not that far from what the Rosebuds do, really), check it out.

They're an engaging live band too, at least when I saw them during CMJ this year. You can find out for yourself as Guards, fronted by Richie Follin (who is also a member of Cults with his sister Madeline), are on a tour now which includes a NYC stop at Knitting Factory on December 15 with TEEN and Your Youth. Tickets for that show are on sale. They'll hit the road with Menomena in February as well, though no dates in NYC for that jaunt.

A list of all Guards dates, video, and streams, below...

Beach Day at Knitting Factory, June 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Beach Day

Beach Day are staying busy on the road this year, having already visited NYC a couple times, and are preparing for another East Coast tour, that will bring them here for two shows next month: September 14 at Pianos and September 16 at Cameo. Tickets to the Cameo show are on sale now.

The Cameo show is with Blonds, who, as mentioned, will play the Rock Shop even sooner on August 28. That show, presented by Brooklyn Brewery, is the "Brooklyn, Sweden Sendoff" with Telepathe, So-So Glos and Teen Commandments all of whom will play the Brooklyn, Sweden Festival in Stockholm and Malmö over Labor Day Weekend (8/31 - 9/1). Blonde Redhead, The Hold Steady, Cults, Crystal Stilts, Phosphorescent, Au Revoir Simone, Dum Dum Girls, DIIV, Twin Sister, Widowspeak, Maluca, Prince Rama, Caveman, and DJs Finger on the Pulse will also be there, so if you're wondering why Williamsburg seems empty that weekend, that's why.

Tickets to the send-off party at The Rock Shop are on sale now: it's $15 bucks but includes free Brooklyn Brewery beer from 7:30 - 9:30 PM.

A flyer for the Brooklyn, Sweden Sendoff party, plus Beach Day and Blonds tour dates, are below.
