A young David Tibet has a message, and an older one does too....
After saying it would happen in April 2010, and then announcing the shows would go down in March of 2011 (including NYC shows at Santos Party House), Current 93 have one again postponed their return. "The C93 North American tour, originally scheduled for the first two weeks of March 2011, has been postponed until the Autumn/Fall of 2011." Stay tuned for more details (thanks Greg, Holly & Sanskar).
You can't call David Tibet a liar. He promised earlier this year that Current 93 would play Santos Party House in October which came after an earlier promise of March or April. Well, the band WILL play the NYC venue, but not until next year on March 11th and 12th as part of a seven date US tour. Ticketing info is forthcoming, though the Santos tickets will likely be on Ticketweb. The NYC dates are the only shows scheduled for the east coast. All dates, including four other major cities, are listed below.
C93 is currently working on TWO new albums, and need your help:
I am presently working, with C93 and our expanded lineups, on 'The Kingdom of Heaven is Within You', one of two new C93 albums. I desire greatly that all of those who have supported, nurtured and fed our work over the last 25 years are involved in creating what I consider to be my and C93's most intense and Hallucinatory release so far.For more on that project head, to the C93 site. All tour dates, and some videos are below.
Consequently, I am asking anyone reading this website, who so desires, to send in an email with a sound recording of him or her saying the phrase 'The Kingdom of Heaven is Within You' in their own language.
Sound files MUST be either MP3s OR 16 bit AIFF or WAV files. No other file types or higher resolution files will be accepted. Files should be no longer than 8 seconds long.
Please do NOT write ANY text in the email in which you send the sound file, as we will not be answering any of these emails. Please put your name, and specify the language, in the subject heading of the email.
The email should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
We will give two weeks' notice of when we will be stopping our acceptance of sound files.
C93's David Tibet with Sasha Grey
S&S: Are you interested in the occult or any other mystical systems? Have you ever experimented with sex magick?Back in September it was announced that there would be a series of Current 93 shows in April and May in London & NYC. Well, NYC didn't happen, but London did just get two:
Sasha Grey: Thanks to Jimmy Paige and C93, I became quite fascinated with the writings of Aleister Crowley, and later LaVey. I am sex magic.
S&S: You recently collaborated with David Tibet on Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain. What was it like working with him?
Sasha: We have an interesting relationship as our lives are drastically different, but there's definitely a subconcious connection that happens between us. I recorded my vocals literally in a few hours, and I was, and still am quite self concious about my music yet I still immensly enjoy the process.
"I and all of C93 want to thank everyone who attended the two concerts in London; without you we are nothing. We also want to thank Comus, Simon Finn, Nurse With Wound, Rameses III and These New Puritans for appearing. We were absolutely astounded by all their sets.Andrew WK was there, and I'm sure he will be again when the NYC shows actually do happen. That's because David has also announced that "C93 will be playing two or three nights at Santos Party House in NYC [Andrew's club], probably some time between 10-20 October. More details soon. These will be our only US shows this year." Stay tuned for more details.
Personally, I wish to thank all of C93: Andrew W.K., Matt Sweeney, Keith Wood, James Blackshaw, Stephen Emmel, William Breeze, Baby Dee, Michael Cashmore, Eliot Bates, John Contreras, Andrew Liles, Sarah Dietrich and Alex Neilson. To have Bill Fay appear with us was an experience that was so meaningful for us all; Bill Fay is Divinity! And thank you Sebastian Horsley for introducing us on both nights--I love you!" [David Tibet]
"C93 will be playing a series of shows in NYC and London in March or April 2010. These will be large-scale events marking David Tibet's 50th birthday; there will be a lot of surprises! More details when the dates and venues are finalised." - Durtro

Om in Brooklyn 9/23/08
On September 8th, Drag City will proclaim that God is Good. The duo of Al Cisneros (who recently played his final show in Sleep) and Emil Amos (also of Grails/Holy Sons) will release their new four track LP of that name, their first LP together and the first Om LP since 2007's Pilgrimage. More details on the Steve Albini-produced album to come.
In addition to the new Om album, Al Cisneros has also helmed a new compilation for Arthur Magazine. Entitled Transmissions from Sinai and featuring art from the legendary Arik Roper, the disc contains contributions from some of the usual Cisneros suspects (Current 93, Scott Kelly, Holy Sons, Grails, Wino) as well as previously unreleased tracks from J. Mascis, Six Organs of Admittance, Lichens, and Sir Richard Bishop. The full tracklisting is below. For more information and to order that disc, head to Arthur.
Sir Richard Bishop
Arthur CD contributor, Sun City Girl, and Om's Drag City label-mate, Sir Richard Bishop double teams NYC in the coming days, with a show on June 13th at The Studio @ Webster Hall with Zaimph, and then two nights later with Bill Callahan (and a BV photo show) at MHOW. Sir Richard Bishop's new album THE FREAK OF ARABY was released by Drag City in May. All of his tour dates are below.
Current 93 recently dropped Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain, as well as Monohallucinatory Mountain, the mono version of said record. Pick that up at David Michael Tibet's site. Spanning eight tracks over it's 53+ minutes, the LP features contributions from James Blackshaw, William Breeze (ex-Coil), Ossian Breeze (Coil), Rickie Lee Jones, Matt Sweeney, Andrew WK, Sasha Grey, and many many others.

Bad Brilliance & Andrew WK @ Terminal 5 in November (more by Zach Stern)
If you missed Andrew W.K.'s DAMN! The Mixtape release party at Santos on May 28th, don't worry. You'll have another chance to catch W.K. and his Skyscraper Music Maker friends at the club's first Adult Swim Presents Summer at Santos Series show on Thursday, June 11th.
The lineup for that free gig includes Andrew W.K. and special guests, plus opening sets by Cherie Lily, Aleister X, Bad Brilliance and Natalie Portman's Shaved Head. Video clips of what exactly went down on the 28th are posted below.
Cherie Lily, Aleister X, Bad Brilliance and that crew are all featured prominently on DAMN! The Mixtape -- a comp produced by Andrew WK and B-Roc of The Knocks. Check out three tracks from that album, above. Those include Bad Brilliance's Girl Talk & Andrew W.K. remixes together as one MP3. And speaking of Girl Talk, he has some shows of his own coming up this summer.
Cherie Lily and Andrew W.K. are also performing at the Street Meat show at Cake Shop the next night (Friday, June 12th). It's a free show that's billed as "Character Comedy with Special Guests." Also playing are Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt, Jon Glaser, Trevor Williams and more.
As previously discussed, Andrew W.K. has a bunch of projects debuting soon: a solo piano improv album coming in the fall, a Canadian tour in June with Nardwuar (who recently interviewed Vivian Girls) and his own Cartoon Network show called Destroy Build Destroy.
Well, he also contributed to the most recent Current 93 album, and at a July 7th Santos show...
Andrew will perform several pieces from his voice performance contribution to The Journal of Popular Noise. This will be Andrew's first ever performance of this type, and a special night of new sounds and styles. Featuring TV BABY, Walker & Cantrell, Jayson Green and DJ TK.Tickets for that gig are on sale now.
Flyers for the Santos and Cake Shop shows, with Bad Brilliance vids and live clips from the DAMN! The Mixtape release party, below...
DOWNLOAD: Baby Dee - Teeth Are the Only Bones That Show (MP3)
I was happy to find out that Baby Dee is playing Joe's Pub again in February. And even better: the show is part of a North American full-band tour. It made me feel better for missing the (solo) show she just played there at the end of December. Band members will be John Contreras (a cellist that plays with Current 93, Calexico and others), Alex Neilson (a drummer who has played with Will Oldham, Jandek, Isobel Campbell and many more), Emmet Kelly (guitarist - The Cairo Gang), and Paul Oldham (Will's brother). All dates below.....
I just realized that the Little Annie & Baby Dee show is tonight at Joe's Pub. Of course the show starts in 2 hours, so you probably won't go if you're reading this, but I thought I would finally stop procrastinating and mention it (and them) at least anyway.
"Baby Dee is an internationally traveled singer, pianist, harpist, songwriter and performer. Dee claimed New York City as home for decades, but now resides in her hometown of Cleveland, OH." I think it was Baby Dee's connection to Antony that first led me to her, and I was definitely excited when I first found out that Drag City was putting out her new album. Then I was even more excited when I found out who else was involved...
Produced by Will Oldham and Matt Sweeney (who also perform on the record), Safe Inside the Day is a record with that blends the Old World with new pop sensibilities. She is also helped by contributions from Andrew WK, Robbie Lee, Max Moston (Antony and the Johnsons), William Breeze (Psychic TV), John Contreras (Current 93), James Lo (Chavez) and Lia Kessel. The record comes out January 22nd. I have a copy, and while certainly not bad, it unfortunately hasn't excited me to the levels the description first did. I'm not done giving it a chance though, and I'm upset that instead of seeing the show tonight, I'm just typing about it.
Little Annie is also connected to Antony - he produced her last album called Songs From the Coalmine Canary which featured the song "Strange Love" which was used in a Levi's commercial and went on to win "Best Use of Music in Advertising" at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. And like Baby Dee, Little Annie also has a new album coming out (Feb. 2008). It's a partnership with Paul Wallfisch called When Good Things Happen to Bad Pianos - described as a "cycle of songs by Frank Sinatra, Leon Russell, Tina Turner, Jacques Brel, Candi Staton, Michael Legrand and U2." Annie & Paul will also be touring together in 2008.
This week's rather lean CD release list has a distinctive Athens, Georgia flavor (at least for the two discs that interest me most). R.E.M. releases their long-awaited live album (complete with concert DVD), R.E.M. Live, and a remastered edition of Pylon's Gyrate arrives with several bonus tracks. Other albums I can strongly recommend include Southeast Engine's Misra debut, A Wheel Within a Wheel, the Capstan Shafts' Environ Maiden and singer-songwriter Karen Dalton's live two-disc collection, Cotton Eyed Joe.
Home for Christmas: Voices from the Heartland is the only holiday music disc I am picking up, with soulful Christmas music from artists ranging from Leon Redbone to Irma Thomas.
Have I left anything noteworthy off the list? What new music releases can you recommend this week? What should I avoid? What are you picking up?
Ben Chasney aka Six Organs of Admittance aka the guitarist in Current 93 and Badgerlore and Comets on Fire, is touring. He starts at Mercury Lounge in NYC on July 6, 2006, and he keeps going for a month. One of his Comets on Fire bandmates is on tour too, playing NYC tonight in fact. All Six Organs dates below....
Ever since I first saw Antony perform in between Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart at Bowery Ballroom, I've been hooked on his unique sound. I regret not getting into him earlier, so that I might have caught one of his performances at St Anns Warehouse or anywhere else for that matter. Who knew that Antony had been partying and performing at the very places I often visited for the past twelve years? I wish I did.
I caught him one more time at the Neil Young tribute concert in Prospect Park over the summer. There were two more shows I was aware of since then, one being the Secretly Canadian CMJ showcase, but I couldn't make it to either. I also had no idea that he "performed at a benefit for Saint Ann's Warehouse with Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Debbie Harry and the Jazz Passengers" a week or two ago.
You can imagine then my happiness when I discovered not just one, but two upcoming Antony shows in NYC, and both at excellent venues.
1) Joe's Pub. Sunday January 9th, 9:30 pm. more info
2) Bowery Ballroom. Thursday February 24th more info
A 3 song Ep entitled 'The Lake,' was released in November. The EP includes one song with Lou Reed on guitar and vocals. Secretly Canadian also reissued Antony & The Johnsons' 1998 debut album that originally came out on David Tibet of Current 93's label, Durtro.
If you haven't heard Antony before, I recommend you start with Cripple and The Starfish (mp3, right click, save target as)
