Cut Copy

Whether it be jumping up and down, waving your hands in the air, undulating your hips back and forth, or singing along, a Cut Copy show is a fully engaging experience for everyone involved. I'm not going to lie, during "In Memory Capsule," I closed my eyes and felt like I was at a Culture Club concert back in the 80's; and it felt so good, and not something that I would have admitted to myself in the early-mid 90's, as I was going through my grunge stage. As my musical tastes have matured with age, along with the gray hairs in my beard, it doesn't seem as if survival would be possible without music such as this. [Live for Live Music]
Australia's Cut Copy just brought their tour to NYC this past weekend to headline two sold-out Terminal 5 shows (3/21 & 3/22), and then DJ the new dance club Verboten the next night. The shows were in support of the band's newest album, Free Your Mind, and included about half of that, but was really split up between their last three records pretty evenly. Pictures of the first night are in this post.

Hyperdub-signed singer/producer Jessy Lanza opened both T5 shows, but unfortunately we missed her (we did catch her at SXSW though). She'll be back in NYC when her newly-announced tour hits Santos on 5/4 (tix).

More Cut Copy pics, plus their setlist and a video, below...

Cut Copy at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)
Cut Copy

Cut Copy still haven't announced a full North American tour for 2014, but we do know that they'll return to NYC for a show on March 22 at Terminal 5. Since we last spoke, that show sold out, but the band have added another date happening a day earlier (3/21) at the same venue. Tickets for the newly added show are on sale now.

Cut Copy recently played "We Are Explorers" off their new album on Fallon, and you can watch the video of that, along with the updated list of tour dates, below...

In unsurprising news, Cut Copy have now announced a NYC show that's more their size (and will be easier to get into) happening on March 22 at Terminal 5. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (11/22) at noon.

Closing Fun Fun Fun Fest, Slayer treated Austin to greatest hits and then some: "Raining Blood," "South of Heaven," "Dead Skin Mask," "Seasons in the Abyss," etc. They also dug out the aforementioned "Die by the Sword," a high point off their 1983 debut LP, Show No Mercy.

After fooling no one with a false ending of "South of Heaven," the third backdrop of the night unfurled at the back of the stage: a parody of the Heineken logo reading "Hanneman" and bearing his life dates. The top read "Angel of Death." Reign in Blood's terrifying opening track - and closing number on Auditorium Shores - now serves as an epitaph for Slayer's fallen co-founder. - [Austin Chronicle]

The eighth Fun Fun Fun Fest happened last weekend (11/8 - 11/10) at Austin's Auditorium Shores, hosting three days of music and fun (fun fun), with such acts as MIA, Deerhunter, Slayer, Television, Thee Oh Sees, Kurt Vile, Cut Copy. Johnny Marr, The Walkmen, Jurassic 5, Killer Mike and loads more. Many of them played again as part of the FFF Nites shows, including shows presented by BrooklynVegan and Invisible Oranges.

We were there in the thick of it and, as mentioned above, you can check out pics from Day 1  HERE and HERE, pics from Day 2 pics HERE and HERE; and pics from Day 3 are HERE and HERE. See you again in 2014 Austin.

Cut Copy

Australian synth popsters Cut Copy returned this year with the new Free Your Mind LP, and they've been out on the North American leg of their world tour supporting it. The tour previously included no NYC dates, but they've just squeezed in a free, very intimate show happening on November 19 at Le Poisson Rouge. It's for an NPR/KCRW taping and KCRW's Jason Bentley is hosting. Like we said, it's totally free, but you do need to RSVP, which IS OPEN NOW (11/13) and will probably close very fast.

UPDATE: And they were gone pretty much instantly. Did you get tickets?

Updated dates are listed, along with a video from the new LP, below...

Cut Copy's new album, Free Your Mind, will be out November 5 and the band have just released a third track in advance of its release. "We Are Explorers" is a typically bouncy dance track from these Australians and you can stream it below.

Meanwhle, the band's fall North American tour starts with this weekend's Mountain Oasis festival in Asheville, NC. Still no NYC date, though there's room on their tour schedule. Fellow Australian Kirin J. Callinan (who just played 10 CMJ shows, including our Friday day party) will be opening for a few dates on the tour. It will be interesting to see how Cut Copy fans will react to Kirin.

Before those shows with Cut Copy, Kirin will be doing some dates on his own, including NYC at 285 Kent on November 4 with Jenny Hval. Tickets to that show are on sale now. That's just after Jenny plays Basilica on Halloween with Yamantaka // Sonic Titan (who also just played a ton of CMJ shows).

All Cut Copy and Kirin J Callinan dates are listed, along with the new CC stream, below.

Cut Copy LP

Australia's Cut Copy will return with their fourth album, Free Your Mind, on November 7. The record was produced by frontman Dan Whitford and mixed by Dave Fridmann and does include "Let Me Show You Love" that first appeared at Pitchfork fest this summer. That is apparently the cover art above. (Wither graphic design.) The title cut is the first single and there's a strong 1990 UK Madchester scene vibe going on here -- you could imagine Andrew Weatherall spinning this at the Hacienda. You can stream it below.

Cut Copy, who were in NYC this summer for Governors Ball, have also announced a North American tour around the album's release. There is no NYC date currently but they are playing Boston and Toronto, so it seems possible that one will be announced sometime soon.

All dates are listed, along with LP track list, and song stream, below.

Governors Ball

We just posted pictures of day 2 (6/8) of NYC festival Governors Ball, which went down on Randall's Island this weekend, and here's more in this post. This time, we've got shots of Guns N' Roses, Animal Collective (who rival Kanye West for best light show of the festival), Cut Copy, Fucked Up and more.

Fucked Up's set was one of the craziest at the festival. Damien performed in the crowd and on the barrier as usual, but due to Friday's weather, this was by far the messiest I've ever seen it get. He was covered in mud, sweat, and beer by song 2 and so was a huge chunk of the crowd, who didn't let the swampy ground stop them from breaking out into a mosh pit. The set included the usual live favorites, "Son The Father," "Turn The Season, "I Hate Summer," etc, a rant about marijuana, and a tons of comments about how grateful they were for their fans. One of the best Fucked Up shows I've seen yet.

Cut Copy debuted a new song, "Explorers," earlier this week on tour (via Consequence of Sound). You can watch a video of that below.

Pictures of day 1 are HERE and HERE. More day 2 pictures are HERE. Videos and setlist of Kanye's day 3 set are HERE, and still more coverage is on the way. Even more pictures of day 2 below...

As mentioned, Australia's World's End Press are over in North America with Cut Copy for a few dates and will headline a NYC show at Mercury Lounge on Wednesday (6/5) with Selebrities. Tickets to that show are still available. The band have just released a new single, "To Send Our Love," which should be on their forthcoming, Tim Goldsworthy-produced debut album. It's a slow build but by the midpoint the track enters full widescreen dance mode with a decidedly DFA backend. We've got the premiere of the track's video below.

Cut Copy, meanwhile, play NYC festival Governors Ball on Randall's Island this weekend. They play on the Saturday (6/8). Single day tickets are still available.

World's End Press also have a headlining date in Los Angeles after their dates with CC and all are listed below...

Deerhunter

Governors Ball is less than a month away, and the fest has now released the daily schedule. They've done a pretty good job with not too many giant conflicts -- though there's a few like Grizzly Bear vs Beirut, Bloc Party vs The xx, Erykah Badu vs Beach House, and Nas vs Guns N Roses. Check out the daily line-ups across their four stages below.

World's End Press

Melbourne, Australia's World's End Press have been around for three years or so, slowly building an audience in the homeland and have shared bills with Hot Chip, Primal Scream, Bloc Party, Cut Copy, !!! and Metronomy. Last year's widescreen, danceable single "Second Day Uptown" (produced by Cut Copy's Dan Whitford) recalls Sparkle in the Rain era Simple Minds was a hit on Aussie alt radio station Triple J. The band have just finished up their debut album with DFA's Tim Goldsworthy which is due out later this year. The first single, the dark and swirling "Deadbeat Sweetheart," is out now and we've got the premiere of its video below.

World's End Press will be in North America next month, touring with Cut Copy. While CC are playing Governors Ball, World End Press will play a headlining show NYC at Mercury Lounge on June 5. Tickets are on sale now. All tour dates are listed, along with that video and a few streams, below.

Governors Ball 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Governors Ball

Though Guns N Roses being announced as the third headliner and related "YOLO" Facebook messages were the most discussed and controversial topics when one of NYC festival Governors Ball's promoters hopped in a Reddit chat yesterday (4/3), we also learned that: Miguel dropped off the festival; the promoters were trying to land Atoms for Peace (whose tour instead brings them to NYC for a Barclays Center show on 9/27); Cut Copy and Kendrick Lamar are playing at the same time on the Saturday of the fest, and there are unannounced afterparties. "Stay tuned for epic shows at Brooklyn Bowl, MHOW, Gramercy, Glasslands, and Irving Plaza." That quote and more over at Reddit.

Governors Ball goes down on Randall's Island from June 7 - 9 and also includes a number of other artists like Kanye West, Nas, Grizzly Bear, The xx, Feist, Beach House, Animal Collective, Erykah Badu, Death from Above 1979, Crystal Castles, Best Coast, Dirty Projectors, DInosaur Jr., Japandroids, Alt-J, Deerhunter, Fucked Up, and many more. 3-Day passes are still available and tickets for individual days are now on Friday (4/5) at 11 AM.

Meanwhile you can catch Guns N Roses tribute band, Mr. Brownstone (no stranger to the pages of BrooklynVegan) at Brooklyn Bowl on May 18 (tickets).

We recently gave you a list of artists we're excited to see at the festival, and though that list already included Deerhunter, we're even more excited to see them after their recent Fallon performance. If you missed the awesomeness of that (which also included debuting their new single, Monomania), you can watch the video below.

Governors Ball 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Governors Ball

As mentioned, NYC music festival Governors Ball keeps growing and its returning this year for it's largest and most exciting festival yet on Randall's Island from June 7 - 9. Early bird 3-day passes go on sale today (1/25) at noon at $190, and once they sell out, they become $205 and then $220. According to the festival's website, single day tickets may or may not become available so if you'd like to go, they advise you purchase a 3-day pass.

The lineup has tons of great names this year and if you're going, we're sure you've got a bunch of stuff lined up to see already, and while you're making your wish list, here's our list of ten bands that we're excited to see at the festival, that you might not want to miss.

Kanye West is one of the headliners, and any chance to catch him in the NYC area is one to take advantage of. It's pretty amazing how far he's come and with seven albums under his belt (including Watch the Throne and Cruel Summer), he's got more than enough material for a hits-filled set, which he tends to do. And there's no telling what else he might do, like break out some snow monster masks or something.

A newer, but no less exciting rapper, Kendrick Lamar, will be there too. He turned the rap world on its head with last year's good kid, m.A.A.d. city, and us New Yorkers only got our chance to see him before its release. So now that we know all the words to his record, we pretty much can't wait to see him perform songs off of it at Governors Ball.

The term "supergroup" doesn't always mean the group is "super," just that the members are all known for other projects. But in the case of Divine Fits, featuring the songwriting talents of Spoon's Britt Daniel and Handsome Furs' Dan Boeckner, it was two great tastes that taste great together. And as a band, Divine Fits were pretty much amazing live right out of the gate, and their danceable vibe is festival-ready.

Deerhunter have been promising a new album for 2013 and while they haven't revealed any formal plans for it, we're hoping to hear some of the new material at Governors Ball. Plus, though we've seen side projects like Atlas Sound, Lotus Plaza, and Moon Diagrams in NYC recently, we haven't gotten an actual Deerhunter show since 2011.

Death from Above 1979 have played NYC a couple of times since reuniting in 2011, and whether you've caught them or not, it's a treat that they have another one on the horizon.

UK art rockers Alt-J became infinitely bigger since first coming to the US last May, and they've got the kind of songs that would sound great on a big outdoor stage. The band have been on tour constantly and we've seen their onstage confidence grow leaps over the visits they've already had here. They should be primed and ready for big crowds by the summer.

Japandroids have already come to NYC a few times in the past year (and those liars said it'd be a while before they came back!) and anyone who has seen them knows every Japandroids show is destined to be a wild time. The band is always nuts on stage and so is the crowd, so it's the kind of thing that will be a killer time at an outdoor festival.

Another band, like Alt-J, that have also had a pretty significant and quick rise since first catching our attention, is Polica, who will be at this year's Governors Ball. Their mix of indie pop and R&B is endlessly catchy and the dueling drummers are a thrill to watch live. Whether you're already a fan or not, they'd be a great band to catch.

Unlike many of the bands on the Governors Ball line-up, it's been a couple years since Australia's Cut Copy have played North America and absence makes the heart grow fonder. CC seem to write their songs with giant crowds in mind and show no shame in working the crowd into a frenzy.

Most of the artists on this list are artists we've been fans of for a while, but festivals are also always good places to discover new artists, and one new group we're excited to see at Governors Ball is Vancouver's Bear Mountain. Last year, they released their debut album, XO, which combined club-ready dance tracks, arena sized atmospherics, and an indie pop sensibility in the songwriting. It's a pretty great mix and sounds like it will be totally fun live. You can stream the album in its entirety below.
