Hot Chip at Prospect Park in 2012 (more by Toby Tenenbaum)
Hot Chip

Hot Chip's Joe Goddard was just in NYC last week, and this coming week members Felix Martin and Al Doyle will be here with their other band New Build. Their tour hits Mercury Lounge on 12/3 with tourmates Museum of Love (DFA, LCD Soundsystem) and 12/4 at Rough Trade with Future Punx and Orange Cassettes. Tickets for those shows are still available.

Just after those shows, there's a Hot Chip DJ set happening on December 6 at Good Room (fka Europa), which is a FIXED party and also includes FIXED regulars JDH & Dave P. Tickets are on sale now. Hot Chip have other DJ gigs too. All are listed below.

FIXED, who just celebrated their 10th anniversary (you can stream JDH & Dave P's mix in honor of that, below), also have other events coming up. They're doing a party on December 5 at Glasslands with Lemonade and a DJ set from Cut Copy (tickets). That's one of the venue's final shows.

They've also got another one happening with Joakim (live) on January 8 at Cameo (tickets).

Stream the FIXED 10th anniversary mix, with the list of New Build dates/Hot Chip DJ gigs, below...

RBSS

As a Red Bull Sound Select program curator, BrooklynVegan gets to do cool shows every few months in NYC. Our next one is this Friday night (9/12) at Palisades in Bushwick with White Lung, Power Trip and Sick Feeling (RSVP if you haven't yet). We once did one with Bouncing Souls, who play another one at small New Brunswick bar Court Tavern this week.

RBSS present shows every month in cities all over the country including LA, but in November they'll be doing one every night in LA, each at a different venue. The LA ones aren't all free, but none are more than $15. You need to register with RBSS before you can buy tickets though, but it's a free registration (same as RSVPing). Register and buy tickets HERE. Full LA November schedule below...

2014 Outside Lands Festival Day 3

Outside Lands in it's seventh installment has completed it's transformation from a traditional rock and roll festival to a Coachella of Northern California. What used to drive Outside Lands were bands like Pearl Jam, Muse, Furthur, and Radiohead. Today, the headliners can be some of the quietest parts of the night. It's the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) that rules almost all festivals nationwide. Trying to get anywhere even close to Flume, Tiesto or Duck Sauce was virtually impossible. Luckily, the stage presence of those shows are next to nothing (besides some creepy visuals of satan that Boys Noize provided) so you can be standing anywhere with your friends and have a great time. This should be no surprise to anyone who's attended a festival in the past few years. The crowds are demanding dance music and I'm often being told that rock shows are just plain "boring". Whether that has to do with the increased intoxication at these festivals or just a shift in the popularity of EDM is for you to decide.

The beauty of the music festival lies in it's diversity in music. It will always be heavily weighed on what's trending, but you'll never go to a major music festival without classic hip hop, vintage rock and roll, EDM, and sometimes a little country. What has really started to impress me is the increasing number of female led rock groups." [Huffington Post]

Outside Lands closed things out with a bang on Sunday as Danielle Haim played drums with The Killers, Flaming Lips covered the Beatles, Patrick Stewart got drunk, and a whole bunch of other sets happened. Those other day 3 sets included Spoon, Cut Copy, Lykke Li, Jenny Lewis and plenty more. Unfortunately, CHVRCHES were a no-show due to border-crossing issues. Pictures of day 3's fun are in this post. Pics from day 1 are here and pics of day 2 are here.

Like we did at Lollapalooza and on OSL DAY ONE (pics) and OSL DAY TWO (pics), we set up in the Toyota Soundwave tent on the festival grounds. On Sunday the activities there included a live interview with Wayne Coyne and 2nd sets from Hiss Golden Messenger, The Bots and Courtney Barnett. Those pictures are in this post too and continue below.

In related news, Spoon just announced openers for their next NYC show, and we're giving away tickets. You can also read about Spoon's last NYC show, a secret surprise one, HERE.

Besides Eminem on Friday, Saturday was heavy on hip-hop heavyweights. First up was Nas, who dedicated the first half of his set to his 1994 debut album "Illmatic" from start to finish. Unlike Eminem, and other EDM-based acts this weekend, Nas commandeered the massive stage on his own, accompanied by only a DJ. "All I need is one mic, two turntables and you," he said. True enough, those songs remain poignant, especially the funk saga "N.Y. State of Mind," the jazz-fused street scenes of "It Ain't Hard to Tell" and "One Love," a universal shout-out to incarcerated friends. The personal imagery in those songs, combined with his solitary presence onstage, summoned the sense of a testimonial before God, his peers, a lover, his family -- It was all packed in there ready for unpacking. - [Chicago Sun Times]
Day Two at Lollapalooza 2014 seemed mostly smooth sailing, seeing performances by hip hop icons Outkast and Nas, indie rock from Parquet Courts and Spoon, not to mention Kate Nash, Vic Mensa, Phosphorescent, Duke Dumont and lots more. Pictures from Saturday (8/2) are in this post.

Lollapalooza Day Three is just getting underway in Chicago's Grant Park, with performances today by Darkside, Chromeo, The Avett Brothers and more. They are also streaming some of the performances live today starting at 3 PM EST. If you're there, be sure to stop by the Toyota Soundwave Tent where BrooklynVegan will be hosting live performances, artist Q&As and more.

Sasquatch Festival 2014 - Day 2

For a moment there, it looked like The National's headlining set at Sasquatch - one of the band's biggest shows to date - was going to be underwhelming. For the first twenty minutes, the band felt too mellow, and frontman Matt Berninger, disinterested. And then, after "Don't Swallow The Cap", a switch seemingly went off in Berninger's head, and suddenly a middling National show turned into an outstanding, headlining-worthy triumph. After a furious "Afraid of Everyone", Berninger threw the first of many wine glasses (and later, bottles) into the air, walking away as it shattered on the ground. By the time he'd gotten to the always-intense "Squalor Victoria", he'd thrown his first microphone. By the end of main set closer "Mr. November", he'd attacked a stage banner, drank more wine, thrown a stage light, drank even more wine, dove into the crowd, crowdsurfed back, screamed at a sidestage LED screen, gone back into the crowd, drank wine (just to spit it out), and smashed whatever glass remained at that point. [KEXP]

Cut Copy @ Terminal 5 - 3/21/14

Cut Copy

Whether it be jumping up and down, waving your hands in the air, undulating your hips back and forth, or singing along, a Cut Copy show is a fully engaging experience for everyone involved. I'm not going to lie, during "In Memory Capsule," I closed my eyes and felt like I was at a Culture Club concert back in the 80's; and it felt so good, and not something that I would have admitted to myself in the early-mid 90's, as I was going through my grunge stage. As my musical tastes have matured with age, along with the gray hairs in my beard, it doesn't seem as if survival would be possible without music such as this. [Live for Live Music]
Australia's Cut Copy just brought their tour to NYC this past weekend to headline two sold-out Terminal 5 shows (3/21 & 3/22), and then DJ the new dance club Verboten the next night. The shows were in support of the band's newest album, Free Your Mind, and included about half of that, but was really split up between their last three records pretty evenly. Pictures of the first night are in this post.

Hyperdub-signed singer/producer Jessy Lanza opened both T5 shows, but unfortunately we missed her (we did catch her at SXSW though). She'll be back in NYC when her newly-announced tour hits Santos on 5/4 (tix).

More Cut Copy pics, plus their setlist and a video, below...

Cut Copy at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)
Cut Copy

Cut Copy still haven't announced a full North American tour for 2014, but we do know that they'll return to NYC for a show on March 22 at Terminal 5. Since we last spoke, that show sold out, but the band have added another date happening a day earlier (3/21) at the same venue. Tickets for the newly added show are on sale now.

Cut Copy recently played "We Are Explorers" off their new album on Fallon, and you can watch the video of that, along with the updated list of tour dates, below...

Closing Fun Fun Fun Fest, Slayer treated Austin to greatest hits and then some: "Raining Blood," "South of Heaven," "Dead Skin Mask," "Seasons in the Abyss," etc. They also dug out the aforementioned "Die by the Sword," a high point off their 1983 debut LP, Show No Mercy.

After fooling no one with a false ending of "South of Heaven," the third backdrop of the night unfurled at the back of the stage: a parody of the Heineken logo reading "Hanneman" and bearing his life dates. The top read "Angel of Death." Reign in Blood's terrifying opening track - and closing number on Auditorium Shores - now serves as an epitaph for Slayer's fallen co-founder. - [Austin Chronicle]

The eighth Fun Fun Fun Fest happened last weekend (11/8 - 11/10) at Austin's Auditorium Shores, hosting three days of music and fun (fun fun), with such acts as MIA, Deerhunter, Slayer, Television, Thee Oh Sees, Kurt Vile, Cut Copy. Johnny Marr, The Walkmen, Jurassic 5, Killer Mike and loads more. Many of them played again as part of the FFF Nites shows, including shows presented by BrooklynVegan and Invisible Oranges.

We were there in the thick of it and, as mentioned above, you can check out pics from Day 1  HERE and HERE, pics from Day 2 pics HERE and HERE; and pics from Day 3 are HERE and HERE. See you again in 2014 Austin.

Cut Copy

Australian synth popsters Cut Copy returned this year with the new Free Your Mind LP, and they've been out on the North American leg of their world tour supporting it. The tour previously included no NYC dates, but they've just squeezed in a free, very intimate show happening on November 19 at Le Poisson Rouge. It's for an NPR/KCRW taping and KCRW's Jason Bentley is hosting. Like we said, it's totally free, but you do need to RSVP, which IS OPEN NOW (11/13) and will probably close very fast.

UPDATE: And they were gone pretty much instantly. Did you get tickets?

Cut Copy's new album, Free Your Mind, will be out November 5 and the band have just released a third track in advance of its release. "We Are Explorers" is a typically bouncy dance track from these Australians and you can stream it below.

Meanwhle, the band's fall North American tour starts with this weekend's Mountain Oasis festival in Asheville, NC. Still no NYC date, though there's room on their tour schedule. Fellow Australian Kirin J. Callinan (who just played 10 CMJ shows, including our Friday day party) will be opening for a few dates on the tour. It will be interesting to see how Cut Copy fans will react to Kirin.

Before those shows with Cut Copy, Kirin will be doing some dates on his own, including NYC at 285 Kent on November 4 with Jenny Hval. Tickets to that show are on sale now. That's just after Jenny plays Basilica on Halloween with Yamantaka // Sonic Titan (who also just played a ton of CMJ shows).

All Cut Copy and Kirin J Callinan dates are listed, along with the new CC stream, below.

Cut Copy LP

Australia's Cut Copy will return with their fourth album, Free Your Mind, on November 7. The record was produced by frontman Dan Whitford and mixed by Dave Fridmann and does include "Let Me Show You Love" that first appeared at Pitchfork fest this summer. That is apparently the cover art above. (Wither graphic design.) The title cut is the first single and there's a strong 1990 UK Madchester scene vibe going on here -- you could imagine Andrew Weatherall spinning this at the Hacienda. You can stream it below.

Cut Copy, who were in NYC this summer for Governors Ball, have also announced a North American tour around the album's release. There is no NYC date currently but they are playing Boston and Toronto, so it seems possible that one will be announced sometime soon.

All dates are listed, along with LP track list, and song stream, below.

Governors Ball

We just posted pictures of day 2 (6/8) of NYC festival Governors Ball, which went down on Randall's Island this weekend, and here's more in this post. This time, we've got shots of Guns N' Roses, Animal Collective (who rival Kanye West for best light show of the festival), Cut Copy, Fucked Up and more.

Fucked Up's set was one of the craziest at the festival. Damien performed in the crowd and on the barrier as usual, but due to Friday's weather, this was by far the messiest I've ever seen it get. He was covered in mud, sweat, and beer by song 2 and so was a huge chunk of the crowd, who didn't let the swampy ground stop them from breaking out into a mosh pit. The set included the usual live favorites, "Son The Father," "Turn The Season, "I Hate Summer," etc, a rant about marijuana, and a tons of comments about how grateful they were for their fans. One of the best Fucked Up shows I've seen yet.

Cut Copy debuted a new song, "Explorers," earlier this week on tour (via Consequence of Sound). You can watch a video of that below.

Pictures of day 1 are HERE and HERE. More day 2 pictures are HERE. Videos and setlist of Kanye's day 3 set are HERE, and still more coverage is on the way. Even more pictures of day 2 below...
