Dale Crover w/ Melvins Lite in October (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)

Dinosaur Jr. just keep adding more alternative rock royalty to their upcoming You're Living All Over Me 25th anniversary show, which happens in NYC at Terminal 5 on December 1. They've already announced Johnny Marr (of The Smiths), Kim Gordon (of Sonic Youth), and Al Cisneros (of Sleep), and now they've added Dale Crover (of Melvins) too. Kurt VIle, who carries the torch that those musicians all helped light well, opens the show and tickets are still available.
Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis is also one of the many guests appearing on the third season of Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen's IFC show, Portlandia, which returns on January 4 at 10pm ET/PT, prefaced by a pre-premiere episode on December 14 at 10:30pm ET/PT. In addition to J, other guests include Dirty Projectors, Jim Gaffigan, Patton Oswalt, Roseanne Barr, Juliette Lewis, George Wednt and more. You can check out the full list of guests for season three and a video clip of the upcoming season below.
Speaking of Melvins, they're playing a New Year's Eve show in LA at The Alexandria with Redd Kross, who released their first new album since reuniting in 2004 this year. Tickets for the LA show are on sale now.
Portlandia video and list of guests are below.

The Fly is the "UK's most popular new music magazine," but if you haven't heard of it, its because it's a free monthly that doesn't really get international distribution. You can however read it online. The mag just released it's year-end issue and topping their Best Albums of 2012 is Sharon Van Etten's Tramp (which was just released in a Deluxe edition, a fine Xmas gift don't you know). Sharon narrowly beat out Grimes, whose Visions came in at #2. The whole list, in ascending order, is below and you can read what The Fly said about each album here.
By the way you can still get tickets for the December 15 show at Cameo that Sharon curated with She Keeps Bees and Speck Mountain and "Special Guest."
A list of the Fly's Top 50 Albums of 2012 is below.

Dirty Projectors / Real Estate @ St. Ann & the Holy Trinity, 11/17/2012

Without the rhythm section, [Dirty Projectors'] meticulous vocal work was overwhelming. The songs seemed less tightly wound, voices filling up the tall room in a wash, punctuated only by the peculiar, skewed twang of Longstreth's guitar playing. The band skipped hits "Stillness Is the Move" and "Gun Has No Trigger." Instead, Swing Lo Magellan cuts like "See What She Seeing" and "Impregnable Question" stood out thanks to slower, more delicate interpretations. For the band's last song, Longstreth revived the title track from his 2007 Black Flag covers project, Rise Above. The song's opening lyrics evoked the spirit of the Occupy movement: "Jealous cowards try to control/ They distort what we say/ Try and stop what we do/ When they can't do it themselves." [Rolling Stone]Dirty Projectors (David Longstreth, Amber Coffman and Haley Dekle), The Walkmen (Hamilton Leithauser, Walter Martin, and Peter Bauer), Cass McCombs, Devendra Banhart, Vampire Weekend, and Real Estate teamed up for a show of intimate acoustic sets at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn on Saturday (11/17). The show was a benefit for Occupy Sandy, where all proceeds were donated.
More pictures from the benefit are below.

yMusic at Crossing Brooklyn Ferry 2012 (more by David Andrako)

NYC contemporary classical ensemble yMusic (known for their work with My Brightest Diamond, St. Vincent, and others) have some upcoming shows scheduled for the end of this year and early 2013. On December 20, they'll play two shows (early and late) at the David Rubinstein Atrium at Lincoln Center with Jherek Bischoff (who's worked with David Byrne, Amanda Palmer, Parenthetical Girls, and others) and Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier. The musicians will be teaming up at these shows to perform music composed by Jherek. Admission to both shows is free, though maybe they should consider making the shows fundraisers for yMusic's record label New Amsterdam Records who were decimated by Sandy.
Then, as mentioned, yMusic will open for Dirty Projectors at Carnegie Hall on January 11, and then join them on stage during their headlining set. The ensemble recently recorded with Dirty Projectors on their recent album, Swing Lo Magellan. Tickets for that show are still available.
In related news, Dirty Projectors release their new EP, About to Die, this week (11/6), which features the title track (which appeared on Swing Lo Magellan) and three new ones. You can stream one of the new tracks, "While You're Here," which David Longstreth tweeted was written for the late Gerard Smith (of TVOTR), and check out a list of all yMusic dates below.
Hunx as Gayracula

All things considered, we hope you had a Happy Halloween. You already saw what John Vanderslice and Freelance Whales dressed up as, and Dum Dum Girls' nun costumes (Crocodiles in there too). We also already posted Deap Vally, Those Darlins & the Mountain Goats in Halloween attire, and you saw Vampire Weekend all decked out for Kimmel. Here's a whole bunch more. That's Hunx and a punx above. See the rest (sort of NSFW), below...
Dirty Projectors @ Capitol Theatre - 9/25/12 (via Citybug)

There were a couple guys in the crowd that were yelling in-between songs "Let's Go! Wooooo!" If this was a reference to a song, frontman Dave Longstreth didn't seem to get it. "Where you want to go?" he asked politely. After more incoherent woooooing, Dave reassured the crowd, "We're going there, man."Dirty Projectors have been on the road since the release of their new album, Swing Lo Magellan, and after having already played NYC twice over the summer, they returned for another area show at the newly reopened Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on Tuesday (9/25) with Lavender Diamond (who also played Mercury Lounge the next night [9/26] and will play Glasslands on Sunday [9/29] with Helado Negro). A video of the DPs playing "Wittenberg IV" at the Capitol Theatre show and their setlist is below. Their tour brings them back to NYC for a show at Carnegie Hall on January 11 with yMusic. Tickets for that show are still available. And go there, they did. Dave and the band performed most of Swing Lo Magellan just as meticulously arranged and produced as the album is--it happens to be their most accessible to date and translates very well live. [Noisey]
Capitol Theatre shows continue with David Gray and Foy Vance tonight (9/27). On Friday (9/28), The Roots were scheduled to continue their residency with a show with Talib Kweli, but as they did with their Septembr 14 show, they've cancelled this Friday's show too. In place of that gig, Roots drummer Questlove, Talib Kweli, and Q-Tip will DJ the first-ever "Soul Planetarium" night at the Cap instead. "Having Questlove, Talib, and Q-Tip spin on the same bill would be awesome in a small dark closet," says [Capitol Theatre booker] Peter Shapiro, who helmed the theatre's relaunch this year and produced 'U2 3D,' the first-ever live action film in the digital 3D format. "Having them each spin Friday night in a legendary rock palace-meets-next generation Planetarium should blow minds." Tickets for that show are available.
Q-Tip does his next Offline Party at Irving Plaza on October 19. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
Dirty Projectors video and setlist are below.

The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY opened a few weeks back and if you've been curious to check the new venue out -- complete with astral projections on it's planetarium-esque dome -- but have yet to pull the trigger on tickets, today might be the day. It's "Fee-Free Friday" at The Cap, meaning any tickets you purchase online today via Ticketfly are free of service charges.
Some upcoming shows you might be interested in include Tuesday's Dirty Projectors / Lavender Diamond show (9/25), Regina Spector on 10/3, Sleigh Bells and Araabmuzik on 10/5, Fiona Apple on 10/10, Yeasayer on 11/13, and My Morning Jacket's three-day run in December.
The Fee-Free Friday offer runs till midnight tonight.

Speaking of Austin, Ume is funding a new record via Kickstarter.
Speaking of Kickstarter, Gawker discusses their accountability problem, Amanda Palmer included.

Speaking of money, Iggy Pop, Wayne Coyne, Ben Folds, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney and more will appear as guests on Ke$ha's new album, Warrior.

Jay-Z & Kanye / Passion Pit / D'Angelo at Made in America 9/2/2012

Closing out the first day of Made in America was rap legend and festival organizer Jay-Z's behemoth set. "Allow me to re-introduce myself," Jay rapped as he entered the stage, a screaming crowd of thousands joining him in every word and making clear that no introductions were necessary. Breaking the day's tradition of rappers surrounded by hype men, Jay-Z struck a dramatic pose alone on stage.Jay-Z's inaugural Made in America Festival happened Labor Day Weekend in Philadelphia and the first day (9/2) featured a wide variety of acts, including Janelle Monae, Passion Pit, Rick Ross, Dirty Projectors (who have a show coming up at Carnegie Hall) and J himself (and a few of his friends). More pictures from Sunday are below, along with Jay-Z's setlist...His set's first surprise was a video from President Obama, who voiced his support of Made in America's patriotic vision and urged concertgoers to register to vote, a call to action greeted with cheers.
Backed by a live band and celebrating his recent NBA partnership by sporting a Brooklyn Nets hat, Jay-Z flew through a sampler of his most beloved hits, from early hit Izzo (H.O.V.A.) to crowd favorite Big Pimpin. He gave plenty of love to his new material as well, performing an ode to his hometown of New York City with a euphoric rendition of Empire State of Mind and leading the crowd in singing Run This Town, before playing the hard-driving On to the Next One...
...Jay-Z's turn at Made In America wasn't complete without a few high-profile guests. As the show neared its end, Kanye West and his G.O.O.D. Music posse stormed the stage. West, joined by Pusha T, Big Sean, 2 Chainz and Common, showcased new tracks Mercy and New God Flow with his crew before splitting off to perform several songs solo. With the crowd in near pandemonium, Jay and Ye closed the night with collaboration N----- in Paris.- [USA Today]

Dirty Projectors at Prospect Park in July (more by Amanda Hatfield)

Dirty Projectors frontman David Longstreth wrote and directed a short film, Hi Custodian, which stars members of his band and was executive produced by Pitchfork.tv and will make its theatrical premiere in NYC on September 6 at Landmark Sunshine Cinema. Gary Clark Jr. at Coachella 2012 (more by David Andrako)

As mentioned, Philly's Made In America Festival goes down this weekend (9/1 - 9/2) on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Since we last spoke, the lineup was expanded and now includes Drake (who was rumored but not on the initial lineup announcement), Jill Scott, Chris Cornell, The Hives, and Run DMC, who are all playing the second day (9/2), in addition to blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr., who will be on the only performer on the bill playing both days, and others. Day 1 (9/1) will be headlined by festival head Jay-Z, and also includes Skrillex, Passion Pit, D'Angelo, Dirty Projectors, Janelle Monae, and others, and day 2 (9/2) will be headlined by Pearl Jam and also includes Odd Future, X, Santigold, and others. Tickets for the festival are still available.
If you're going to the fest, Philly is only about a two hour drive from NYC and this FAQ should help you find your way over (for directions use the address of Ben Franklin Parkway at Eakins Oval in Philadelphia or the Philadelphia Museum of Art). Once you're there, that FAQ will also help you find your way around, parking tips, and more. There will be a free filtered water service at the festival site, but you can't bring glowsticks (sorry Skrillex fans).
A #MadeInAmerica video for Gary Clark Jr. and the lineup for the festival are below.

This is part two in a new series that I invented when I found this second tattoo after posting a related one yesterday.
The owner of this colorful red and blue and bird-filled tattoo writes:
"This is my Dave Longstreth/Joanna Newsom tribute tattoo. I admire Joanna for her lyrics, and Dave for his music; they are my two biggest musical influences. The red and blue background is from the album, "Bitte Orca" by Dave's band, Dirty Projectors. The red and the blue intermingling represents how lyrics and music are both needed to intertwine in order to make a song. The two brown finches are reoccurring birds that Dave uses in most of his albums, and the canary and sparrow are from Joanna Newsom's albums "The Milk-Eyed Mender" and "Ys", respectively. The finches also represent my little sisters, as they're my little songbirds, and the canary, my mother, while the sparrow is my father. I'm very happy with it. Done by Jimmy at The Parlour Tattoo in Eugene, OR."PREVIOUSLY: check out this Joanna Newsom tattoo

Dirty Projectors at MHOW, July 2012 (more by Jessica Amaya)

Tickets to see Dirty Projectors at the soon-to-open Capitol Theatre in Port Chester go on sale today at 10 AM, along with tickets for Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Band (9/08).
Inside The Cap

Forty years ago, in its heyday, the Capitol Theater here was known as a rock stage with great acoustics, a crumbling space where the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Santana and Pink Floyd played memorable concerts. So when Peter Shapiro, a founder of the Brooklyn Bowl, took over the theater last year and announced plans to reopen it as a concert hall next month, he had a heavy reputation to live up to.We've been keeping tabs on the $2 million renovation of the Port Chester's Capitol Theatre for a while, for a while but the 1800-seat venue just announced its initial schedule today, which will host its first concert on September with performer to be announced later this week. Highlights from the known schedule include Dirty Projectors on September 25, Fiona Apple on October 10 (adding to her string of NY shows at the time) the already-announced Regina Spektor show on October 24, and three nights of My Morning Jacket (Dec. 27 - 29).Now Mr. Shapiro has unveiled an eclectic lineup for the next four months that he hopes will re-establish the Capitol as an influential spot for live music. My Morning Jacket has agreed to do three nights. The Roots will play four dates, with Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead joining them for one night. Others on the fall bill include Fiona Apple, Dirty Projectors and Regina Spektor, as well as older artists, among them Blues Traveler, Indigo Girls, Al Green, the Moody Blues and the Steve Miller Band. - [NY Times]
Full schedule is listed below. It seems like they are stil setting up their online ticketing system -- you can keep checking here for on sale dates. Can't wait to see that projection system in the flesh.
DOWNLOAD: The Hood Internet - "Grown Up Has No Trigger" (MP3)

As mentioned, The Hood Internet are releasing their new album, FEAT, on October 2 and playing shows in support of it including a NYC date on August 11 at Brooklyn Bowl. That show is no longer happening, and Brooklyn Bowl calendar now lists an early show that day (8/11) with Natural Child, The Peoples Temple, and Liquor Store, and a late show with St. Lucia, Big Black Delta, and Capital CIties.
Instead, The Hood Internet will make their way to NYC for a show on September 14 at Music Hall of WIlliamsburg with Body Language, My Gold Mask, and Oscillator Bug. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (8/3) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (8/1) at noon. All Hood Internet dates are listed below.
The Hood Internet recently made a very topical mashup of Danny Brown's "Grown Up" and Dirty Projectors' "Gun Has No Trigger" called "Grown Up Has No Trigger." You can download that above or stream it below, along with a list of all dates...

Dirty Projectors, Celebrate Brooklyn! 7/10/2012

It was a gorgeous evening in Prospect Park last night for one of the more anticipated Celebrate Brooklyn! concerts of the season: Dirty Projectors, Wye Oak and Purity Ring. Having just played the much more intimate Music Hall of Williamsburg the night before, David Longstreth and company peformed basically the same set at Prospect Park, just with the song order switched up a little. Setlist is below. Despite opening the show with her band and having sung with them recently (like on Jimmy Fallon), Jenn Wasner from Wye Oak did not join DP this time at Prospect Park, but Olga Bell did a great job completing the trio of female voices, from behind her keyboard stage right where she stayed all night.
Even though they are playing bigger and bigger places, Wye Oak remain a duo and were great as usual. Jenn and Andy Stack wrote some new songs for the tour, and told the crowd they were really excited to be touring with Dirty Projectors. There was a whole lot of Mutual Appreciation Society happening onstage throughout the night, actually.
Purity Ring, also still a duo, seemed to impress the crowd with their early 7PM set. Corin Roderick has retired the plumber's acid trip instrument he was using last year (like at our CMJ-week day party) in favor a baroque arrangement of flower lights that lit up and triggered xylophone/marimba sounds when struck. (It probably looks really cool when in a fully dark envoirnment.) Also: they were selling their new album, Shrines, at the merch table that doesn't actually hit stores for two more weeks. So look for that if you're going to see them before July 24.
Purity Ring will be back in NYC on their record's release date, July 24 for an in-the-round show at Le Poisson Rouge. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (7/13) at noon. It's $15 for a ticket or $25 for a ticket plus a copy of Shrines. If you order tickets through their website, you get a limited edition screenprint poster as well. They've also got a new video out for album track, "Fineshrine," which you can watch below, along with an updated list of Purity Ring tour dates, and more pictures from last night's Prospect Park show.

Dirty Projectors at Music Hall of Williamsburg - 7/9/12

Dirty Projectors are currently on tour in support of their great new album, Swing Lo Magellan (out today [7/10], stream it), and that tour brought them to Music Hall of Williamsburg last night (7/9) for their first of two NYC shows. They played every song on the new album except its closing track, "Irresponsible Tune," in addition to a few off 2009's Bitte Orca and "Beautiful Mother" from their EP with Bjork. Last night's show was intimate show for the band, and needless to say, the show had sold out quickly and the venue was packed to the brim. You can watch the archived video of their set (which streamed live) HERE. Dustin Wong opened the show. Pictures, new band member Olga Bell included, are in this post.
Dirty Projectors play Brooklyn again tonight (7/10), this time at the much larger Prospect Park with Purity Ring and Wye Oak as part of Celebrate Brooklyn. Tickets for tonight's show are still available.
More pics from last night (setlist included) and some videos from the show are below.
