HEALTH @ Knitting Factory (more by Ryan Muir)
HEALTH

HEALTH returns to NYC on Saturday, June 20th for a New York Night Train show in Brooklyn - possibly at Danbro Studios, and possibly somewhere else (stay tuned). Other bands on the bill are Awesome Color and Kid Congo Powers. Go go artist Anna Copacabanna, drum and trapeze act Wolf and Cub, projection artist Spencer Bewley and projection artists Mighty Robot AV Squad will all also be there along with DJ Josh Styles and DJ Jonathan Toubin.

HEALTH last visited NYC on November 7th, 2008 at the Knitting Factory - a one-off date connected to their tour with Nine Inch Nails.. This summer, the band is also scheduled to play Sled Island Fest in Calgary, as well as a pair of European festivals.

HEALTH's new disc, GET COLOR, comes out September 8th on Lovepump United. A single for the song "DIE SLOW" came out in April. It's now streaming with its b-side/remix on the band's site.

Awesome Color, who are on the bill of the June 20th Danbro show, will be touring this June/July with with Black Dice (June 14th Bowery Ballroom show included), and then with Sonic Youth (but not in NYC).

Sonic Youth have announced all the opening bands for their The Eternal tour kicking off at the end of June. Besides Awesome Color, other openers on the tour will be White/Light, Endless Boogie and The Entrance Band, the last of which opens Sonic Youth's NYC show at the United Palace on July 3rd. Tickets for that show are still on sale. SY's most recent NYC show took place at the Music Hall of Williamsburg as part of the No Fun Fest.

Bromst

"Dan Deacon has announced a massive US Spring tour in support of his new album, Bromst (out March 24 on Carpark). He has a one-off solo show in NYC this week on Jan. 30 and then on April 3 he'll launch the official Bromst tour in Philly. This tour will feature a full live ensemble similar to the one that performed with him at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple back in Dec. but will have different members. Baltimore bands Future Islands and Teeth Mountain are set to open the entire tour."
If I knew I'd have all the tour dates three hours later, I wouldn't have done that last post. All dates below...

Dan Deacon

"The art made by Baltimore artist Dan Deacon is about community and how to organize and inspire it. From founding a now well-known art collective (Wham City), to organizing and running an annually sold-out DIY music festival (Whartscape), to conceiving, planning and curating a massive 60 person/30 band tour (Baltimore Round Robin Tour), it's clear to see that community and bringing people together is the major theme of his work. Bromst is the embodiment of that way of thinking.

For the last three years Dan Deacon has been working on Bromst. Fusing together the growing intensity of his live performances with his background in electro-acoustic composition, the outcome is a collection of pieces that are intense and epic and at the same time down to earth and welcoming. Bromst embodies the same energy and excitement as Spiderman of the Rings, however the craftsmanship and composition on Bromst have a wider scope and richer palette.

Unlike the completely electronic Spiderman of the Rings, the instrumentation on Bromst is a mixture of acoustic instruments, mechanical instruments, samples and electronics. The player piano, marimba, glockenspiel, vibraphone, live drums, winds and brass give Bromst a much richer tone than his previous work. The intricate and complex parts, skillfully executed by the performers, are woven together into a rich, dense, noisy dance pop that has become Dan Deacon's signature sound." [PR]

Dan Deacon plays a $3.00 show in Brooklyn on January 30th and the "Brooklyn vs. Baltimore Marathon" now also has Woods and Blank Dogs on the bill (previously their spots were marked "special guest"). The location is still "tentatively" Danbro Warehouse The 1896.

Dan Deacon will also play Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan on May 16th with Double Dagger and Teeth Mountain. The date is presumably part of a bigger tour that is still TBA. Tickets for the NYC show go on sale Friday at noon.

Bromst will be released on March 24, 2009 by Carpak Records. Listen to the track "Get Older" at Imeem. Full tracklist below.

Even sooner (Jan 27 via Carpark), you can get your hands on a Dan Deacon / Adventure split 7". The cover of that one is a composite image of Dan Deacon and Benny Adventure. It's got 4 tracks. They are listed below.

Dan also appears on a new Free Yr Radio benefit compilation that is exclusive to Insound. Other bands on the album include !!!, Chairlift, Yeasayer, White Williams, No Age, Mudhoney, King Khan, The Secret Machines, The Walkmen, Tokyo Police Club and Jamie Lidell. Exact songs are also listed below.

Last but not least, Dan is/was looking for interns who can transcribe sheet music...

I'm preparing the scores for 15 of my compositions that are being printed in early March. I'm already insanely busy so I'm seeking 2 or 3 interns to help me with the process. It pays $15 an hour and should be around 20 hours total. I need people to help clean up the MIDI files and transcribe parts from the program Reason and bring them into the program Sibelius.
UPDATE: All known tour dates HERE (including a second one at Danbro).

Spank Rock was AWOL (once again), but the originoo headz were still in full force in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Wild Style at Danbro Studios Warehouse in Brooklyn back on November 13th. Billed performers who did show up included Busy Bee, Double Trouble, Grandmaster Caz, Grand Wizard Theodore, and The Rub. Unannounced guests included Fantastic Romantic's Master Rob and Kevie Kev, and "starchild" MC Kool Kyle. The entire night was curated by Wild Style director Charlie Ahearn and Sleep When Dead NYC (his son Joe Ahearn).

"It's not just young people here. It's a really great turnout, all over the spectrum, not just one type of person, or race, or age here," [event promoter] Todd P said.

He was right. The audience included hip NYU Freshmen with skinny jeans and ankle boots, a young CUNY professor, a 44-year-old radio station volunteer from Seattle, all sorts of music professionals, video and graffiti artists, nostalgia-stricken fans from the original Bronx scene and everyone in between.

Rapper duo Fenton Arms and Raylight Hope, who call themselves "the future of hip-hop," felt honored to be in the same building with the guys who broke ground 25 years ago.

"It's like you go back in time and actually chill with Malcolm X," said Arms. "Without that movie rap might not have happened the way it happened." [Greenpoint Gazette]

That wasn't long. Fucked Up and Vivian Girls will be sharing a NYC bill again on January 20th. The Todd P show at Danbro Studios in Brooklyn also has Pissed Jeans listed as playing. Should be a good one. All FU tour dates with the various openers, below...

In celebration of what some see as the ultimate cinematic document of Hip Hop culture, Wild Style, director Charlie Ahearn has released a 35MM print of Wild Style that will play from Nov 14-20 at Film Forum in NYC. Tickets are available here. Here's what my favorite film critic at the New York Times had to say about the movie:

"Wild Style remains, to borrow a term from the rap lexicon, permanently fresh. In capturing the Hip Hop aesthetic at an early point of ferment and vigor, Ahearn's film was able to intuit what Hip Hop would become."
-[ A. O. Scott, New York Times]
To kick off the celebration, Ahearn enlisted the help of original cast members Busy Bee, Grandmaster Caz (Of The Cold Crush Brothers), Grand Wizard Theodore, and Double Trouble (of Funky 4+1) as well as the headliner Spank Rock to play Danbro Studios in Bushwick, tonight, Thursday November 13, 2008. The Todd P show also doubles as a benefit for Showpaper. Get on out and support the old sch-, -er, ORIGINAL school of hip hop! Charlie Ahearn was recently interviewed on WNYC (check that out here) and the New York Times ran a piece on Wild Style's anniversary. Todd P party details, and the Wild Style trailer, are below...

Ponytail

Though Ryan only caught DMBQ and Matt & Kim at Danbro Studios on Halloween, I couldn't not post a picture of Ponytail's Molly Siegel looking amazing in her Kool-Aid Man costume.

Ponytail, Yeasayer and Graffiti Monsters are playing the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at NYU on November 15th. Tickets are "$8.00 w/NYU ID (Available in Advance Two Days Time) $12.00 General Admission (Available @ The Door Day of Show)". (thx Brenda).

Members of Yeasayer were in the crowd when Ponytail played Music Hall of Williamsburg during CMJ. Yeasayer end a tour with two nights at the same venue in December.

DMBQ

Japan's DMBQ played a Halloween show at Danbro Studios in Brooklyn with Fiasco, The Homosexuals, Ponytail, Aids Wolf, Child Abuse and Matt & Kim on Friday (10/31). I heard the show was great from start to finish, BUT Ryan only got there in time to shoot pictures of Matt & Kim (the headliners) and DMBQ who played right before them. More from DMBQ's set below...

Matt & Kim

FADER Label, the recording branch of The FADER, is pleased to announce their partnership with Brooklyn-based music collective Matt and Kim. The all-encompassing collaboration between FADER Label and Matt and Kim is more than a record deal. It's a new and unique model that gives the band access to the unlimited resources of The FADER and its' sister company Cornerstone, a premiere music and lifestyle agency. This announcement comes on the heels of Matt and Kim's new full-length, Grand, which will be available on vinyl, CD and online formats on January 20th 2009 through SONY/RED distribution.

Under the watch of The FADER's careful eye, Matt and Kim have already begun experiencing the benefits of the relationship by recently releasing free online singles, Good Old Fashion Nightmare and Daylight, both of which will appear on the upcoming sophomore effort. The structure of this deal will give Matt and Kim unique resources that will allow the band to connect with current and future fans. An important component of the relationship will include Zync, who have successfully represented Matt and Kim to film and TV previously.

Recorded over a nine-month period in Matt's childhood bedroom in Vermont, Grand stands to be the band's most compelling work to date. Matt self-produced the record in it's entirety while paying attention to every detail with meticulous precision, achieving production that Matt and Kim have never had, yet still being very Matt and Kim.

The lightning in the bottle? Matt and Kim will be bringing their elated live show worldwide as they plan to tour nonstop throughout 2009.

"The partnership with FADER Label has been amazing this far and we are looking into the future," remarked, Kim Schifino. Matt Johnson added, "We have already been able to give fans free music [like through Mountain Dew's "Green Label Sound"], play free shows [ditto] and reach new people. It's really important for us to be able to give back to those who have supported us from the beginning."

"We are excited to have Matt and Kim join The FADER family," said Jon Cohen, Co-CEO of Cornerstone and The FADER. "Their songwriting and live performance matched with their amazing creativity set them up for a successful career. With this new model we're able to put Matt and Kim in front of new audiences and create opportunities that aren't available to most artists. Now they are going to have the freedom to connect in many ways with their fans."

Matt & Kim headlined the Halloween party at Danbro Warehouse on Friday (10/31). Fiasco, The Homosexuals, Ponytail, Aids Wolf, DMBQ and Child Abuse also played the show. Now M&K are on tour. More Halloween pics below...
