Superchunk

When Superchunk were in NYC for a couple Bowery Ballroom shows and a Fallon performance earlier this year, they headed to Brooklyn DIY spot Shea Stadium to film the video for I Hate Music track "Void." In addition to the band themselves, the video features comedian/actors Jon Glaser and Jon Benjamin, plus members of multiple local bands including Ava Luna, Heliotropes, Aye Nako, Lost Boy?, Weird Womb, and others. Were you in it? Check out the new video below.

Superchunk also have a number of dates coming up, including SPIN's Year In Music Event which happens in NYC on December 10 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Danny Brown and Charli XCX. It's a semi-private show, but we're giving away a few pairs of tickets via Twitter. Details on how to enter the contest along with all tour dates and the video, below...

Danny Brown at Rough Trade NYC - 11/26/13 (via Taylor Sprow)
Danny Brown

Danny Brown, fresh off two big shows with Sleigh Bells, did something more intimate yesterday (11/26) at the new Rough Trade NYC, where he played a free in-store. Like the in-store sets are, his set was brief, but included a number of Old standouts like "Smokin & Drinkin," "Dope Song," "Handstand," and "Dip," plus some non-album tracks like the especially great "Molly Ringwald" from the Loosies comp. You can watch a video of his full set below.

Did you check out the show or go to Rough Trade NYC yet in general? Read our initial thoughts on the venue/store, and head there during Thanksgiving Weekend for a number of great events.

Danny Brown's next NYC show is SPIN's Year In Music Event which happens on December 10 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with a multi-genre lineup that also includes Superchunk and Charli XCX, plus comedian host Hannibal Buress. It's an invite-only show, but we're giving away a few pairs of tickets via Twitter. Details on how to enter the contest are below.

Sleigh Bells @ Terminal 5 - 11/23/13
Sleigh Bells

Rage pop duo Sleigh Bells wrapped up their tour in support of this year's Bitter Rivals in NYC over the weekend with two shows at Terminal 5 (11/22 & 11/23). Unlike the rest of the tour, these shows also had Danny Brown on the bill, and Montreal indie poppers Doldrums (who were on the whole tour) opened them too. Sleigh Bells, now three albums deep in almost as many years, split the set pretty evenly between all of those releases. Pictures of the second night, and the setlist from the first, are in this post. Pictures of Danny Brown are here.

More pictures, video, and setlist, below...

Danny Brown @ Terminal 5 - 11/23/13
Danny Brown

Bob Dylan music video star Danny Brown just teamed up with Sleigh Bells for the last two nights of their tour, which took place at NYC's Terminal 5 on Friday (11/22) and Saturday (11/23). For Danny, they were the first NYC shows since the release of his excellent new album, Old. Pictures of his set from Saturday's show are in this post.

Danny has a few more shows scheduled before the year ends, including a much more intimate performance in-store at the new Rough Trade NYC on Tuesday (11/26). It starts at 5 PM and is totally FREE, no wristband/RSVP or anything necessary. (4:30 doors.) All upcoming Danny Brown dates, including New Year's Eve in San Francisco with Flatbush Zombies (who also play NYC soon) and Traxamillion, are listed below.

Meanwhile, Rough Trade NYC opened TODAY (11/25) at 9 AM and later there will be an in-store/signing from Sky Ferreira at 7 PM (with a purchase of her new EP or LP) and an in-store from Charles Bradley at 8:30 PM (free).

one of the stars of Bob Dylan's new video (more by Autumn Andel)
Danny Brown

Did you read that headline? Just in case you didn't, let me repeat: Bob Dylan finally made a video for his 1965 single "Like A Rolling Stone" and Danny Brown is in it. Seriously. It's an interactive video that you can watch at Dylan's site and flip through virtual "TV channels" to see his song lip synced by Drew Carey & The Price Is Right, Pawn Stars, ESPN, Danny Brown & other things you might see on TV. It's ridiculous. Watch.

Dylan also just released The Complete Album Collection Vol. 1, and you can watch the trailer video for that below...

Treasure Island Music Festival 2013

Giraffage kicked things off at noon during Saturday's stretch of the festival after an introduction from Noise Pop/Salty Artist Management's Chad Heimann aka Chad Salty, performing sample-driven dance music for the early crowd. Giraffage's two-girl "skate squad" roller skated around the stage, waving an American flag as Charlie dropped the bass-heavy banger "Money", leading into his remix of "Party in the USA".

Antwon cranked up the bass on the Tunnel Stage with local producer Nanosaur and rapper Sad Andy backing his punk-inspired rap songs. The Nature Boy gang performed fan favorites such as "Dark Denim", "Helicopter", and "Living Every Dream". Sad Andy did not perform "Ferragamo", despite audience requests. However, Antwon did stop the beats to lead the crowd in a singalong of "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys.

...

Holy Ghost! performed a fun set of colorful dance rock, followed by Little Dragon on the Bridge Stage. Phantogram drew an impressive crowd to Saturday's final set on the Tunnel Stage, with the duo debuting danceable new material despite a few harsh feedback issues. Fireworks went off across the bay as the band performed. Atoms For Peace closed out the evening with a hooded Flea, and Thom Yorke singing tracks from AMOK while busting out his unique dance moves. [The Bay Bridged]

While CMJ was going down in NYC, across the country in San Francisco, the annual two-day Treasure Island Music Festival (10/19-20) returned. The first day had a mostly electronic-oriented lineup, featuring sets from Atoms for Peace, Major Lazer, Little Dragon, Phantogram, Disclosure, Danny Brown and more. Pictures from that day are in this post, and a set of day 2 pics is on the way.

For Holy Ghost!, the festival was part of their tour which hits NYC for a show at Terminal 5 on Halloween (tickets).

For Little Dragon, it was part of their tour which hits NYC tonight (10/23) at Bowery Ballroom and Thursday (10/24) at MHOW for sold-out shows with SZA.

The excellent new Danny Brown album features a bunch of guests that we're big fans of, like Purity Ring, Schoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky, Ab-Soul, Freddie Gibbs, and more. But one guest appearance we weren't familiar with that's really been catching our ears is British grime rapper Scruffizer, who has a verse on "Dubstep." Scrufizzer just released his own new single, "Kick It," which, though it's totally UK grime, actually has a lot in common with the new Danny Brown album (wacky loud rapping, dance beats, etc). And if Scrufizzer starts building a larger American audience, you get the feeling that the appreciation will be mutual. On "Dubstep" he makes references to US rappers ("I'm tryna get Mayback money, I'm a Mac Miller, spittin' ASAP, rookie), and he does it again on "Kick It" when he borrows flow from "The Real Slim Shady" and raps "No Eminem, but please stand up." Check out the video for that song below.

Scrufizzer also just appeared on BBC Radio 1 to freestyle over "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High" from the new Arctic Monkeys album. If you never really bought that AM was influenced by hip hop, this freestyle might change your mind. He also just uploaded a tribute to fellow UK grime rapper Dizzee Rascal in another video, which you can watch below.

In related news, as mentioned earlier today, Danny Brown added a second Terminal 5 show with Sleigh Bells.

Videos below...

Sleigh Bells @ LPR 10/5/2013 (via @DoNYC)
Sleigh Bells

Rage pop duo Sleigh Bells just played a release show in NYC at Le Poisson Rouge on Saturday (10/5) for their new album Bitter Rivals, and they're kicking off their full tour in support of the new record this week. As discussed, the tour culminates with a much larger NYC show happening on November 22 at Terminal 5 with Doldrums and Danny Brown (whose new album, Old, is out now too), and since we last spoke, Sleigh Bells, Danny and Doldrums have added a second date happening at Terminal 5 on November 23. Tickets for the newly-added show go on sale Friday (10/11) at noon, and tickets for the first night (same link) are still available.

Sleigh Bells, whose old song "Rill Rill" is being used in the current iPhone 5c ad, have also made their new album, Bitter Rivals, available for streaming. You can listen to that, along with a stream of the new Danny Brown album, and the updated list of dates, below...

Danny BrownDanny Brown

Rapper Danny Brown has been planning the release of his much-anticipated new album, Old, for some time now, and the whole thing can finally be streamed via Spotify. Check it out below.

The album features appearances from Purity Ring, Schoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky, Ab-Soul, Freddie Gibbs, and more, plus production from Rustie, Darq E Freaker, Oh No (who plays NYC tonight [9/30]), A-Trak, and more. It officially comes out on October 8 via Fool's Gold.

Danny is currently wrapping up a tour with Action Bronson and Trash Talk (who played their own show at 285 Kent over the weekend), and he'll play NYC again when he opens for Sleigh Bells at Terminal 5 on November 22 with Doldrums. Tickets for that show are still available. Danny also would have played NJ's Rock The Bells this weekend, but that's been cancelled.

Album stream below...

RTB

Just today we were saying how Schoolboy Q would be in the NYC-area for Rock the Bells in October, but the East Ruthford, NJ Rock the Bells stop has been cancelled. DC is possibly cancelled too. More details as we hear them.

UPDATE: The promoters confirmed & issued a statement.

The NJ festival would have happened on October 4 and 5 at Meadowlands Racetrack with Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Wu-Tang Clan, Tyler the Creator, Danny Brown, Joey Bada$$, J. Cole, Rakim, Big Sean and more.

You can still catch Kendrick, Schoolboy Q, and Big Sean in NYC at their Barclays Center show in November.

Meanwhile, Danny Brown, whose new album comes out soon, will open for Sleigh Bells at Terminal 5. Sleigh Bells also just announced a LPR show.

Schoolboy Q at Prospect Park in 2012 (more by Chris La Putt)
Schoolboy Q

There's still no word on when Schoolboy Q's much-anticipated new album, Oxymoron, will be out, but he's just released another track that's expected to make it on the LP, "Banger (MOSHPIT)." It sees Q veering pretty close to gangsta rap, and after the psychedelic Kendrick Lamar collab "Collard Greens" and the party-rap track "Yay Yay," it sounds like Oxymoron is shaping up to be a pretty diverse album. Listen below.

Schoolboy Q also has some shows coming up. Catch him the NYC-area with the whole Black Hippy crew (Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock) at NJ's Rock The Bells on 10/4 (tickets), and again when he and Kendrick team up with Big Sean, 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, and more for 105.1 Powerhouse at Barclays Center on November 2 (tickets). If you're in LA, you can also see him at the Odd Future Festival with Tyler, Earl, Frank Ocean, Flying Lotus, Trash Talk, and more (tickets). All dates are listed below.

Meanwhile, Schoolboy Q will appear on an album that we're (kind of) sure will come out this year, Danny Brown's Old. Its September 30 release date was pushed back to October 8, but it's supposed to stream on Spotify on 9/30. Check out that album's full tracklist (guest appearances and production credits included), along with the list of Q dates and the new track stream, below.

the real Vampire Weekend at Barclays Center this week (more by Dylan Johnson)
Vampire Weekend

Last year around the holidays, Adam Horne of Brooklyn's Bear Ceuse (who released an album this year) and Animal New York uploaded an album to Soundcloud called Merry Indie X-Mas, which featured hilarious parodies of what it would sound like if famous indie bands did Christmas covers in their own styles. Now he's back with a new one called Indie Kidz Songs! which does the same thing, but for children's songs. Especially funny ones include Chief Keef's "Old MacDonald," Vampire Weekend's "I'm A Little Teapot," Alt-J's "Row Row Row Your Boat" and Pixies' "B-I-N-G-O." But they're all really funny and if you need to kill 6-ish minutes of your time with some hipster-baiting style laughs, stream the album and watch its commercial below.

Danny Brown

Danny Brown's Old is one of the most anticipated rap albums of the year, and while holding your breath for a rap release is never a good idea (we've got our fingers crossed for that September 30 release date though), we're feeling one step closer to Old actually seeing the light of day, now that it's officially got album artwork. And pretty great artwork at that. That's it above (via Danny's instagram). It was designed by Sam Chirnside, and the painting is by Leila D'Amato. His newish video for "ODB" is below.

Danny recently made appearances at Afro-Punk Fest, Fool's Gold Day Off, and the NYU Mystery Concert, and he's set to play Rock the Bells NJ in October and open for Sleigh Bells at Terminal 5 in November.

Meanwhile, the group Danny is a part of, Bruiser Brigade will be playing NYC without him (he'll be at Rock the Bells in California) on September 15 at Mercury Lounge. The Detroit crew will be joined by some hometown pals like producer Nick Speed (50 Cent, M.O.P., Talib Kweli) and rapper Dusty McFly, in addition to NYC producer Hillie Hill (Nas, Biggie) and A La $ole of Joey Bada$$'s Pro Era crew. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

There's some other good rap shows coming in NYC too, including afro-beat rapper Blitz the Ambassador, who is headlining The Studio at Webster Hall on September 19 with opening sets from Old Money, Boima, and Caktuz. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Eve, who's got a new album out this year, was supposed to play Irving Plaza back in August, but she'll instead play Gramercy Theatre on September 12. Opening the show is Dyme-A-Duzin (of Phony PPL) and Camille Safiya. Tickets are on sale now, and any tickets purchased for Irving Plaza are being honored.

Not exactly rap, but neo-soul singer Bilal, who released his solid new album A Love Surreal earlier this year, will play the New School Alumni Jazz Night at Highline Ballroom on September 18. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Stalley, who plays Rock the Bells NJ, and Gunplay play Gramercy Theatre on October 18 (which is during CMJ). Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (9/6) at noon.

Legendary hip hop duo Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, who played a Central Park show earlier this summer, play BB King's on November 13 with Camp Lo. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Yo Gotti just released his new mixtape, Nov 19th: The Mixtape, and he'll play NYC on November 19 at BB KIng's with Y.G., Ca$h Out, Shy Glizzy, and Zed Zilla. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Drake

On the topic of anticipated rap albums, which we were talking about above, Drake also shed some more light on his new album, Nothing Was The Same, which is due out on September 24. He just revealed the tracklist which features previously released singles "Started From the Bottom" and "Hold On, We're Going Home," and "All Me" appears as a bonus track on the deluxe edition. The only guest rappers are Jay Z and Detail. Check out the full tracklist below, and that's the artwork above.

Both Drake and Jay Z appear on the second installment of Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience, which is due out September 30. Justin returns to NYC to play Barclays Center on November 6. Tickets for that show are still available (though Ticketmaster says "not many left"). Artwork and tracklist for his new LP, below.

Drake also plays Barclays Center (10/28) on his tour with Miguel and Future. Tickets for that show are still available.

Things aren't looking so bright in Miguel's world lately, as he was just charged with two counts of DUI after his August arrest.

A$AP Rocky also just faced some legal charges. TMZ reports that due to an incident that occurred while he was performing at Jay Z's Made In America Festival, Rocky was charged with misdemeanor simple assault for allegedly slapping a woman in the crowd. TMZ writes, "The woman claims A$AP was trying to make his way through a crowd of dancing fans -- with a bunch of girls pulling on his shirt -- when A$AP turned and fired off an open-hand slap, connecting with her face. The woman claims she was injured from the alleged slap -- suffering whiplash from the impact." It's not the first time he was accused of something like this.

A$AP Rocky and Drake's third "Fuckin' Problems" partner, Kendrick Lamar, will be in NYC with his Black Hippy friends Ab-Soul and Jay Rock, plus young Brooklyn rapper Bishop Nehru, on September 10 at Williamsburg Park. Tickets for that show are still available.

Meanwhile, the man behind the hook on "Fuckin' Problems," 2 Chainz, will NOT be at Williamsburg Park, because despite being scheduled to play five days after Kendrick, he cancelled his show.

What other hip hop shows in NYC are you excited for? And when is Schoolboy Q's album coming out???

Sleigh Bells at Terminal 5 in 2012 (more by Chris La Putt)
Sleigh Bells

Abrasive pop duo Sleigh Bells have announced that the followup to 2012's Reign of Terror is called Bitter Rivals, and it will be out on October 8 via Mom + Pop. The album's first single/title track is more of the band's heavy, trashy pop, and you can hear it in the song's video (made in conjunction with The Creators Project), below. The album artwork, tracklist, and a clip of Alexis Krauss talking about the new album on SiriusXMU are below too.

Sleigh Bells will be supporting the new album with a tour of the US and Canada this fall, which brings the band to Terminal 5 on November 22 (a place they've played before). Most of the tour is with Doldrums, but and the Terminal 5 date is also with Danny Brown. Tickets for the T5 show are not on sale yet go on sale Friday (9/6) at noon. All tour dates are listed below.

UPDATE: Doldrums are on the T5 date as well.

Meanwhile, Danny Brown, who will release his new album, OLD, on September 30 via Fool's Gold, just played Fool's Gold Day Off in Williamsburg Park yesterday (9/2) with Run the Jewels, Migos, A$AP Ferg, and more. A video with clips of yesterday's show is below. If you're an NYU student, you can also probably catch Danny at the NYU Mystery Concert tonight (9/3).

All Sleigh Bells dates are listed, along with videos, LP artwork and tracklist, below...

Dr. Dog in Central Park in 2012 (more by Tracy Allison)
Dr Dog

NYU are doing their annual Mystery Concert on September 3 at the Skirball Center this year. Clues have led us to believe that the lineup might look like this: Danny Brown, How to Dress Well, and Speedy Ortiz. What do you think? The show is free with your NYU ID, but you must be a student to enter.

For a minute we thought maybe Dr. Dog was playing too due to a "Reservoir Dogs" clue NYU put out mixed with the last minute, random, small Dr. Dog show at Mercury Lounge happening late the same night, but then we realized "Reservoir Dogs" also leads to Danny Brown.

Dr. Dog's new album, B-Room, is out on ANTI- October 1, and they're heading out on the road with The Lumineers in the fall. All of their dates are listed below.

And meanwhile, we know for a fact that you can catch Danny Brown in NYC for free a day earlier at Fool's Gold Day Off in Williamsburg Park (9/2).

Even though the season doesn't official end until September 21, Labor Day (9/2) is generally seen as the end of summer and the last chance for NYers to get out of town and relax. Mind you some people find a half-empty city just as relaxing as a beach, and for those who will be in town this weekend there are lots of live music options. Afropunk Festival - Day 2 - 8/25/2013

Emboldened by a raise in profile from the recent documentary, A Band Called Death, they were more of a classic rock beast. Extended rum solos, odd time changes. They were strong, and the mix was overwhelmingly crunchy. There were even times, like when performing their 1975 song "You're a Prisoner" , when it struck me that you could shift the emphasis slightly, swap out the guitar tones for something more expensive and add some gross 30-piece drum set, and they might be playing a Metallica song! Or at least what Metallica songs I remember from being 12 were like. "You can't run! You can't hide! YOU'RE! LOCKED! INSIDE! (riff riff riff riff riff). I mean, right? [L Mag]
While the VMAs were happening in a different park of Brooklyn, the two-day, free annual Afro-Punk Festival wrapped up in Fort Greene's Commodore Barry Park on Sunday (8/25). Darq E Freaker

Danny Brown, who has a tour with Action Bronson on the way, is saying he'll release his new album, Old, at some point this October, and he just released a new song (that may or may not appear on the album) produced by London's Darq E Freaker. The song is called "Hand Stand," it's a real banger, and you can stream it below.

Meanwhile, Darq E Freaker will be in NYC this weekend to play Warm Up at MoMA PS1 on Saturday (8/17) with King Britt (Hyperdub), J. Cole, Bangladesh, World's Fair, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Star Eyes, and Jubilee. Tickets for Warm Up are still available.

Then on Saturday after Warm Up, True Panther is hosting an unofficial party at Williamsburg Italian restaurant ISA's upstairs space (348 Wythe, right by Death by Audio) with some of those same names, including Hyetal and Zora Jones (who DJs b2b with Sinjin Hawke), in addition to A$AP's DJ J. Scott and Loric (of Water Borders, who played Warm Up in 2011). That one goes from 10 to 3 and is FREE.

Schoolboy Q at Prospect Park in 2012 (more by Chris La Putt)
Schoolboy Q

Ridiculously prolific west coast rapper E-40 just dropped a new track, "All My Niggas," and it features his typically rapid fast flow joined by two of the best of-the-moment rappers, Danny Brown and Schoolboy Q. Check out the new song (via Stereogum) below).

As discussed, Schoolboy Q will be in NYC this weekend to open for Odd Future at their big outdoor Williamsburg Park show on Saturday (7/20). That show also includes Meek Mill, who just played the Mac Miller, Chance the Rapper, The Internet, Vince Staples show in NJ (but not the Hammerstein one), Queens crew World's Fair, and legendary DJ Funkmaster Flex. Tickets for Saturday's show are still available. Rain or shine.

In related news, Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator will be going on a tour later this year with Kid Cudi and Big Sean. That tour doesn't include any NYC-area dates, but all three rappers will hit the area in October for Rock the Bells. 2-day passes for Rock the Bells are still available. Logic, who does not play Rock the Bells, is also on that tour.

All Tyler dates are listed, along with the E-40 song, below...
