Schoolboy Q at Prospect Park in 2012 (more by Chris La Putt)
Ridiculously prolific west coast rapper E-40 just dropped a new track, "All My Niggas," and it features his typically rapid fast flow joined by two of the best of-the-moment rappers, Danny Brown and Schoolboy Q. Check out the new song (via Stereogum) below).
As discussed, Schoolboy Q will be in NYC this weekend to open for Odd Future at their big outdoor Williamsburg Park show on Saturday (7/20). That show also includes Meek Mill, who just played the Mac Miller, Chance the Rapper, The Internet, Vince Staples show in NJ (but not the Hammerstein one), Queens crew World's Fair, and legendary DJ Funkmaster Flex. Tickets for Saturday's show are still available. Rain or shine.
In related news, Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator will be going on a tour later this year with Kid Cudi and Big Sean. That tour doesn't include any NYC-area dates, but all three rappers will hit the area in October for Rock the Bells. 2-day passes for Rock the Bells are still available. Logic, who does not play Rock the Bells, is also on that tour.
All Tyler dates are listed, along with the E-40 song, below...

Schoolboy Q at Best Buy Theater - 5/21/13 (via Kellen Dengler)
Thanks to TDE's recent success, Q found himself as the most established performer at the Freshman show. With no one to accompany him on stage, he fared better in the larger crowd as a solo artist, breezing through tracks from Habits & Contradictions and throwback collaborations with A$AP Rocky. At one point, he asked Kendrick Lamar to join him but laughed at the audience members who fell for his joke. Fittingly, he won the crowd back with his charisma by asking them the title of his upcoming album. "Oxymoron!" they screamed back. And this was done four times over. [XXL]The 2013 XXL Freshman Class, including Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Angel Haze, and more, all came to NYC for a show at Best Buy Theater last night (5/21). You can check out a video of Schoolboy Q playing "My Hatin' Joint" at the show, below.
As mentioned in yesterday's What's Going On? post, Action Bronson made a video for his Harry Fraud-produced song, "Strictly 4 My Jeeps." If you missed it, you can watch that video below. Riff Raff stars in the video, and as discussed, he plays a Scion A/V show in Brooklyn at Coco 66 tonight (5/22) with Stalley and Smoke DZA. Entrance to that show had to be gained through Scion's contest which has since ended.
Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul are both members of the group Black Hippy (which also includes Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock), and that whole group is playing the traveling Rock the Bells Festival which hits the NYC-area on October 4-5 at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, NJ. Tickets for that festival are on sale now. The rest of the lineup includes Big K.R.I.T., Common, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Jhene Aiko, Juicy J, Rakim, Wu-Tang Clan, and many more.
Updated Rock the Bells lineup and videos below...
Happy 10th anniversary to Rock the Bells, who have announced their initial, rotating 2013 lineup featuring hosts Peter Rosenberg & MURS 3:16, as well as names like Bone Thugs N Harmony, Danny Brown, Black Hippy (who just played NYC), Common, E40 & Too Short, Earl Sweatshirt (ditto), Flatbush Zombies, Juicy J (who played a Fader show on Monday and Irving Plaza last night), Rakim, Wu-Tang Clan (who play Summer Jam soon), Tyler the Creator (who just announced an NYC show as part of Odd Future), Eazy E, Ol Dirty Bastard and more. Confused? Yes, I did just say Eazy E and Ol Dirty Bastard, both of which will be "virtual performances" as part of the travelling festival. AllHipHop reports:
Ol Dirty Bastard and Eazy-E's spirits will return to the stage at Rock The Bells this year, AllHipHop has learned. So far only four dates exist for Rock the Bells. They're all listed below. Two of them are on the East Coast and one is in the NYC area at Meadowlands Racetrack in Rutherford, NJ on October 4-5. Tickets go on presale Thursday (10/16) at noon, and regular sale on Saturday.
The pair of Hip-Hop legends will have holograms performing this year at the 10-year anniversary of the rap festival.
Eazy-E will perform virtually with Bone Thugs-In-Harmony and ODB will rock with Wu Tang. Organizers said Eazy never blessed the Rock The Bells stage and ODB only did once.
Also, the "holograms" are approved by Eazy-E's wife Tomica Wright and Ol Dirty's mother, Cherry Jones.
Tupac's Coachella appearance inspired the new virtual performances at Rock The Bells, organizers admitted.
Initial lineup (at least 15 more artists TBA), dates and some video below.
Danny Brown at Knitting Factory (more by Fred Pessaro)
I won't go into detail about the actual events because I was pretty drunk and I don't want to tell the wrong story. I will say that it happened so quickly that nobody I talked to after the show even knew anything had happened (there was only one photo and no video--how rare is that). I will also say that whoever wrote on Reddit that Danny was "walking around the stage getting girls to grab his dick" is 100% false, and to blame someone for their own molestation is a shitty thing to do. Anybody who is exaggerating this tale to climax is also a lying fool, and to call it a blow job is even going a bit far because it was probably the fastest thing I've ever seen. "The Thing" was not a thing that Danny facilitated--it was an actual sexual assault, and somehow nobody gives a fuck about that but me.Kitty has a lot more to say, which you can read at Noisey. Danny Brown and Kitty Pryde's tour hits NYC on May 7 at Irving Plaza and hopefully there will be a barrier for that one. Tickets are still available.
Danny Brown at Knitting Factory Brooklyn in March (more by Fred Pessaro)
Rapper Danny Brown is inspiring retweets and making headlines for an alleged incident that took place while he was on stage in Minneapolis on Friday (4/26), as City Pages reports...
Live performance is an incredibly intimate bond between artists and fans, but that intimacy got busted worse than Danny Brown's front tooth during Friday's show on Minneapolis's West Bank. At minimum, the Detroit rapper led several fans at the sold-out Triple Rock Social Club to believe, and many proclaiming on Twitter, that they saw a female concert-goer in the front row performing oral sex on him. At max, the 18-and-up crowd witnessed something putting Brown's evening put alongside Jim Morrison's "Miami Incident."Whether it happened or not, at least one Reddit user claims to be traumatized, and Danny's name will probably be attached to the rumor for a while. Read the rest of the article, including tweets from fans (and from Kendrick Lamar), and tourmate Kitty Pryde's take on the matter, at City Pages.
Updated tour dates are listed, along with a stream of Danny Brown's "#ExpressYourself," below...
Squarepusher is coming to the NYC-area for Camp Bisco, which goes down this year from July 11 to 13 at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY with Passion Pit, Animal Collective, Toro y Moi, El-P & Killer Mike, Baauer, Ryan Hemsworth, Dan Deacon, Danny Brown, and more. Right before that though, Squarepusher will play his own show in NYC at Le Poisson Rouge on July 9. It's a much more intimate show than his 2012 show at Terminal 5, and tickets for it go on sale Friday (5/3) at 10 AM with a LPR member presale starting Thursday (5/2) at 10 AM.

Danny Brown / Le1f @ Knitting Factory 3/21/2012
Knitting Factory was heaving with bouncing hip hop fans at last night's Red Bull's Sound Select show that was curated by the Afropunk folks, with Danny Brown, Le1f, The Skins and Oxymorrons. With a zillion RSVPs clamoring for $3 tickets it was quite a scene as I rolled up to the venue 30 minutes before doors.
After a brief introduction from host Telli Gramz of Ninjasonik, Oxymorrons opened the show with a bouncy, energetic take on 90s style hip hop with added bonus of live drums. Fun and very different from the second band of the night, The Skins, a Rock/R&B crew with great vocals and singer that slithers around the room. Le1f followed, dropping bouncy, electronic influenced hip hop beats and whirlwind-swinging his platinum blonde braids like a member of viking metal band. All the sets featured projections that were being hand-drawn by someone in the sound booth. It was kinda like live graffiti, pretty cool. DJ CX Kidtronik played the music between sets.
The main event for most, though, was Danny Brown's playful and bouncy hip hop set, which caused stagedives (most of which were quite unsuccessful - sorry guys) and a dancing room. Brown's rock star persona really shines through live, and in a genre of music (hip hop in general) where the stage show is usually less than impressive, Brown knows how to get that room turnt the fuck up.
The Thursday night show was the 2nd in a 12-part Red Bull Sound Select series in NYC (not to be confused with RBSS in Austin). The 1st NYC show, featuring Hunters & Heliotropes, was curated by East Village Radio and went down at Bowery Electric in February. The next 10 shows are coming in the next 10 months and three of them will be curated by BrooklynVegan (and three will be curated by Brooklyn Bodega). Stay tuned.
More pictures from Knitting Factory are below.
Danny Brown at VICELAND at SXSW 2013 (via Noisey)
If you were down in Austin for SXSW last week, you may have caught sets by either Danny Brown or Le1f, who both did a number of shows. Now, you'll also have a chance to see those two rappers together in NYC at an intimate Red Bull Sound Select and Afropunk-presented show at Knitting Factory on Thursday (3/21). The Skins and Oxymorons are on the bill too.
Advance tickets are sold out but $3.00 tickets will be available at the door with RSVP to RSVP@afropunk.com. It's first come first serve and you can start lining up at 7:30. I imagine those are going to go quick so get there early.
The show is the second in a year-long series that started with East Village Radio's Hunters show at Bowery Electric and will continue with BrooklynVegan-presented shows later in the year. Red Bull Sound Select also just presented a week's worth of shows in Austin for SXSW, including The Smashing Pumpkins on Saturday night (pics of that one are on the way).
As mentioned, Danny Brown is also going on a tour which features some dates with Baauer and others with Kitty (Pryde). That tour brings Danny back to NYC for a much larger show at Irving Plaza on May 7. Tickets for that show are still available. Danny's new album, Old, will be out at some point this year. Check out "#HottestMC" from that album, along with updated dates listed below...

Danny Brown at Roseland, October 2012 (more by Brook Bobbins)
Danny Brown has a string of dates with Bauuer that kick off in April, but shortly thereafter you can see the MC continue his trek, turning those dates into part of a full North American Jaunt. Though Bauuer won't join DB for all of those dates, he has enlisted Kitty (she dropped the "Pryde") for the tail end of the tour that will include an NYC stop at Irving Plaza on May 7. Ticketing info is on the way.
Not only is Danny Brown returning to the road, he has ALSO returned to the booth too! He recently dropped the new track "#Hottest MC," a new Harry-Fraud blessed burner due on his forthcoming LP Old. Look for the LP to feature a grip of homies as well, including Purity Ring, A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Rustie, Kitty and more. All tour dates are listed, along with a stream of "#Hottest MC," are below.

Two hip hop producers, House Shoes and Dabrye, are teaming up for some shows together this month. They've got two shows in California this week, and then they'll come to NYC for a Bandshell-presented show on February 28 at Le Poisson Rouge with Lamin Fofana. Tickets for the LPR show are on sale now. At the moment, those are the only three shows announced for the two producers, and you can see them all in list format below.
House Shoes has been a mainstay as a producer in the Detroit hip hop scene for years, but it wasn't until 2012 that he released his "official" debut album, Let It Go, which features guest spots from Danny Brown, Roc Marciano, The Alchemist, Oh No, Guilty Simpson, Black Milk, Chali 2na and more. Like collaborator The Alchemist's 2012 album, Russian Roulette, Let It Go is a great showcase of the current indie rap scene, but it also works as its own cohesive album of retro-futuristic boom bap. You can stream the entire album and watch the video for the song with Danny Brown, "Sweet," below.
Dabrye hasn't released anything too recently, but like House Shoes, his albums feature a variety of great indie rappers (his 2006 release, Two/Three featured DOOM, Vast Aire, Beans, Guilty Simpson, and others), and his material has been taken on by some pretty great remixers like Kode9 and Flying Lotus. A stream of the instrumental version of his Two/Three LP is below.

On the heels of a highly successful, critically acclaimed sold-out 2012 festival, the Sasquatch! Music Festival unveils its 2013 lineup, which once again features 4 days of music. The festival, hailed as "a model of well-paced programming...in a four-day schedule as efficient and natural feeling as an expertly built algorithm" by NPR Music while Wired notes, "leave the landscape out of it and Sasquatch! has a lineup to kill for," runs May 24-27 (Memorial Day Weekend) at TheWoot. 2013 Lineup below...
Gorge, the internationally acclaimed concert venue carved in the basalt cliffs high above the Columbia River Gorge in Quincy, WA.
We briefly mentioned in our post of bands reuniting at Coachella 2013, LA hip hop collective Jurassic 5 are reuniting after breaking up in 2007 (one year after the release of their fourth album, Feedback). There's no insight yet as to whether or not this reunion will go beyond the Coachella slot but fingers crossed! They play on the Fridays (April 12 and 19).
Another big one on the lineup is Wu-Tang Clan, who play the Sundays of the festival (April 14 and 21). This one's not exactly a "reunion," like Jurassic 5 is, but it's worth noting that while Wu-Tang Clan members play shows a lot, it's not every day that they all join forces on stage.
Other rappers at the festival include Aesop Rock and Earl Sweatshirt on the Fridays, and El-P, Pusha T, Action Bronson, Danny Brown, 2 Chainz, and Theophilus London on the Saturdays. R&B singer Janelle Monae also plays on the Saturdays.
A classic Jurassic 5 video below...
Hard to believe, but our BrooklynVegan "Blog Radio" show has been airing weekly on satellite radio for over 6.5 years. It started on Sirius which then merged with XM and became SiriusXM. The station, which was originally "Left of Center" on Sirius, is now called SiriusXMU (on SiriusXM). You can currently hear the two hour show on the "indie/college" station every Wednesday at noon EST and again at midnight that night (which is technically Thursday morning in Eastern Standard Time).
At some point years ago I brought on like-minded music lover Dominic (Nick) Masi to be my co-host, and to cover when I couldn't make it. Now, though I still may pop in occasionally (my New Year's resolution!), Nick has taken over completely, hosting the show week to week with a selection of music you'll find on BrooklynVegan.com and on his own iPod. Recently Nick also started hosting a show called "Cover Me" (all cover songs) on Bruce Springsteen's E Street Radio, and other programs on the network too.
In his spare time, Nick now tour manages members of Odd Future - a job which was an offshoot of his huge passion for hip hop (and traveling around the continent in a van).
What were Nick's favorite records and songs in 2012? We asked him and he gave us a list of his top 10 albums and "top 15 hip hop songs of the year that don't feature 2Chainz, Kanye, Drake, Rick Ross or (fill in the blank with your favorite rapper you've seen on every remix this year)."
You can check out both of Nick's lists, along with videos or streams for each song on his hip hop list (Odd Future songs included), below...

Pitchfork just posted their much anticipated list of the top 100 tracks of 2012. The #1 slot went to... Grimes! Whether you thought the whole of her album Visions was good or not, it was hard to deny the charms of "Oblivion." (Having that great video didn't hurt either.) Do you think it deserved to top the list? If not then what song should've?
You can check out P4K's entire hot 100 of 2012 below.

DOWNLOAD: Purity Ring - "Belispeak II" feat. Danny Brown (MP3)
Purity Ring at POP Montreal 2012 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Purity Ring are set to head out on a European tour in November, and they've already begun announcing North American dates to go down in early 2013, upon their return. Those dates include a NYC show which happens on January 11 at Webster Hall with Young Magic, whose frontman Isaac Emmanuel sings the guest vocals on "Grandloves" and did so live for the first time at Le Poisson Rouge in July. Tickets for the Webster Hall show go on sale today (10/10) at noon. All currently known dates are listed below.
UPDATE: The full tour was announced and Young Magic supports on every date. All dates are listed below.
In related news, yesterday (10/9) the duo warned via Twitter that they've "got treats." The single "treat" they've shared is a sequel to the song "Belispeak" from their debut LP, Shrines, featuring a little help from guest-spot-maniac Danny Brown. Corin Roddick has really ramped up the production on "Belispeak II," turning it into more of a club track than the already dancey original was. Instead of further warping Megan James' voice, Roddick targeted Danny Brown towards the end of his short verse, pitching up his rhythmic lines. Take a listen to "Belispeak II" at the bottom of this post or download it above.
Meanwhile, you'll have a bunch of chances to catch Young Magic in NYC even sooner during CMJ. He'll DJ the Force Field/Hipster Runoff party at Glasslands on October 18 along with DJ sets by Chrome Canyon, Teen Daze, and Mister Lies (free with RSVP). Later that night, he'll play live at Cameo for the Carpark/Paw Tracks showcase with Prince Rama, Dent May, Popstrangers, Dog Bite, Montag, and Adventure (tickets). And on October 19, he'll play the Deli showcase at Pianos with Hundred Waters, Mac DeMarco, Snowmine, Foxygen, Murals, The Luyas, Ava Luna, Port St. Willow and Poor Moon (tickets).
In other Danny Brown news, Noisey posted a video of him at the Gathering of the Juggalos. That video, the "Belispeak II" song stream, and lists of dates are below...
