Ab-Soul's been talking about his new album These Days... for a while now, and it finally came out today (6/24) via TDE (not Interscope). Like his fellow Black Hippy members Schoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar did with their recent albums, you can tell Soulo went all out here and really wanted to make an "album" with multiple interludes, smartly placed guest spots, and well-executed transitions from song to song. Kendrick and Schoolboy Q appear on the LP, as do Danny Brown, Action Bronson, Lupe Fiasco, Jay Rock, SZA, Jhene Aiko and more, plus excellent production from Corin Roddick of Purity Ring, DJ Dahi of Pac Div, J. Cole, Dave Free, Sounwave, and Tae Beast of TDE regulars Digi+Phonics and more.
Ab-Soul's love of drug references and tripped-out sounds are all over the record, but it's not a one tricky pony drug-rap album or anything. Like good kid, m.A.A.d. city and Oxymoron, there are the songs for your headphones, the songs for parties/live shows, and plenty that go both ways. He quotes Drake, mimics Chief Keef, and shouts out a particular trip to New York: "I'm on my way to NYC, last time I was there I swear I sold out SOB's." Presumably he's referring to this show.
Ab-Soul will be on his way back to NYC to headline the 4Knots afterparty on July 12 at Webster Hall with YC the Cynic and Jarren Benton. Tickets for that show are still available. His buddy Schoolboy Q will be in NYC for a Central Park show this week (tix).

We just saw the album artwork and heard another track, and now XXL Mag points to a purported tracklist. It features previously-released songs "Collard Greens" (ft. Kendrick Lamar), "Man of the Year" and "Break The Bank" (but not "Yay Yay"), and in addition to Kendrick, guests include A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown, Ab Soul, 2 Chainz, Tyler the Creator, Raekwon and Suga Free, plus the entire Black Hippy crew appearing on one song. TPOBPAH at Summerstage in 2012 (more by Chris La Putt)
NYC indie pop band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have been relatively quiet lately, but it's looking like that's about to change. Frontman Kip Berman has been instagramming guitar pedals lately, which hopefully means they're back in the studio, and Pains have also announced what will be their first hometown show in a while, happening on March 28 at Rough Trade NYC. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (1/17) at noon.
The band's only other currently announced date is New Orleans festival BUKU Music + Art Project, which happens from March 21-22 and also includes The Flaming Lips, Chromeo, Explosions in the Sky, Tyler the Creator, Pusha T, Schoolboy Q, Baauer b2b RL Grime, Danny Brown, Phantogram, Skream, Wavves, Big Freedia, Thundercat, Cashmere Cat, Blood Diamonds and more. Pitchfork is back with its much-anticipated Top 50 Albums of 2013 list. The list has many of the albums you'd expect to see on Pitchfork's list, though there's still some surprises. If you thought M.I.A got snubbed, you'll be happy to see her here, and if you thought James Blake deserved the Best New Music he didn't get, you'll be happy to see how high he ranks. The biggest surprise to me is that Majical Cloudz makes the top 10, and for those keeping score, Yeezus is NOT #1. Can you guess what is?

Superchunk / Danny Brown
SPIN put together a pretty killer lineup for their annual 'Year in Music' show this year. Taking place at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on 12/10, the bill included rising pop star Charli XCX (whose set included the hit song that not many people realize she wrote for Icona Pop), indie legends Superchunk (who recently made a new video), and one of 2013's greatest and most fun rap stars Danny Brown (who Charli XCX also joined on stage towards the end of the night). It was a well rounded night that delivered from start to finish, even without the complimentary drinks that were flowing in the balcony. Comedian Hannibal Buress hosted the festivities and told the jokes.
The show was free and packed, but also guestlist only. We gave away ten pairs of tix here at BrooklynVegan.
Pictures from the show, which featured two of the artists on SPIN's Favorite Albums of 2013 list, are here and continue below....

Pitchfork just posted their Top 100 Tracks of 2013. It's got what some people might call the worst song ever, the song with the most talked-about rap verse of the year, some surprises, and some of the year's most undeniable songs. Their #1 pick is certainly one of those undeniable songs, whether or not you're a fan of the artist who made it. What do you think of their list? Did your favorite song make it? Any glaring omissions?
Check out the full top 100 below...

I always look forward to FACT's year-end list, which you can count on to be chock full of (but not limited to) forward-thinking electronic music, pop, R&B and rap, and it's one of the lists where I'm usually guaranteed to find something new. They just put out their 50 Best Albums of 2013 list, and it has all of those things, from one of the biggest name pop stars of the year to some of the most obscure stuff. It's also got one of the least obvious #1s I've seen on lists this year.
Check out the whole thing below...

The Monday after Thanksgiving Weekend is looking to be Official Year-End List Day, as we've already got SPIN, and Paste, (plus ones from UK mags Q and Mojo) and now here's the one from elder rock statesman Rolling Stone, who have Vampire Weekend's Modern Vampires of the City in the top spot, with Kanye West's Yeezus at #2. RS' Top 10 also makes room for John Fogerty, Paul McCartney, Lorde and more. Haim are at #31 for those keeping score. Phosphorescent at Rough Trade NYC (more by Amanda Hatfield)
by Andrew Sacher
It's the first work week of December and the year-end music lists for 2013 keep piling in. We just saw album lists from Q and Mojo, and now we get a list from a US publication, SPIN. There's not too many surprises on this one. Like last year, it shares its #1 with the highest Pitchfork-rated album of the year, and in general it features many of the albums we expect to see on these kinds of lists, including a lot of the year's big-name comebacks like My Bloody Valentine, Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk, Queens of The Stone Age, Boards of Canada and Nine Inch Nails, plus big breakouts like Haim and Disclosure. There are a few interesting omissions though, like Savages.
Check out their full list below...
When Superchunk were in NYC for a couple Bowery Ballroom shows and a Fallon performance earlier this year, they headed to Brooklyn DIY spot Shea Stadium to film the video for I Hate Music track "Void." In addition to the band themselves, the video features comedian/actors Jon Glaser and Jon Benjamin, plus members of multiple local bands including Ava Luna, Heliotropes, Aye Nako, Lost Boy?, Weird Womb, and others. Were you in it? Check out the new video below.
Superchunk also have a number of dates coming up, including SPIN's Year In Music Event which happens in NYC on December 10 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Danny Brown and Charli XCX. It's a semi-private show, but we're giving away a few pairs of tickets via Twitter. Details on how to enter the contest along with all tour dates and the video, below...
Danny Brown at Rough Trade NYC - 11/26/13 (via Taylor Sprow)
Danny Brown, fresh off two big shows with Sleigh Bells, did something more intimate yesterday (11/26) at the new Rough Trade NYC, where he played a free in-store. Like the in-store sets are, his set was brief, but included a number of Old standouts like "Smokin & Drinkin," "Dope Song," "Handstand," and "Dip," plus some non-album tracks like the especially great "Molly Ringwald" from the Loosies comp. You can watch a video of his full set below.
Danny Brown's next NYC show is SPIN's Year In Music Event which happens on December 10 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with a multi-genre lineup that also includes Superchunk and Charli XCX, plus comedian host Hannibal Buress. It's an invite-only show, but we're giving away a few pairs of tickets via Twitter. Details on how to enter the contest are below.

Sleigh Bells @ Terminal 5 - 11/23/13
Rage pop duo Sleigh Bells wrapped up their tour in support of this year's Bitter Rivals in NYC over the weekend with two shows at Terminal 5 (11/22 & 11/23). Unlike the rest of the tour, these shows also had Danny Brown on the bill, and Montreal indie poppers Doldrums (who were on the whole tour) opened them too. Sleigh Bells, now three albums deep in almost as many years, split the set pretty evenly between all of those releases. Pictures of the second night, and the setlist from the first, are in this post. Pictures of Danny Brown are here.

Danny Brown @ Terminal 5 - 11/23/13
Bob Dylan music video star Danny Brown just teamed up with Sleigh Bells for the last two nights of their tour, which took place at NYC's Terminal 5 on Friday (11/22) and Saturday (11/23). For Danny, they were the first NYC shows since the release of his excellent new album, Old. Pictures of his set from Saturday's show are in this post.
Danny has a few more shows scheduled before the year ends, including a much more intimate performance in-store at the new Rough Trade NYC on Tuesday (11/26). It starts at 5 PM and is totally FREE, no wristband/RSVP or anything necessary. (4:30 doors.) All upcoming Danny Brown dates, including New Year's Eve in San Francisco with Flatbush Zombies (who also play NYC soon) and Traxamillion, are listed below.
Meanwhile, Rough Trade NYC opened TODAY (11/25) at 9 AM and later there will be an in-store/signing from Sky Ferreira at 7 PM (with a purchase of her new EP or LP) and an in-store from Charles Bradley at 8:30 PM (free).

one of the stars of Bob Dylan's new video (more by Autumn Andel)
Did you read that headline? Just in case you didn't, let me repeat: Bob Dylan finally made a video for his 1965 single "Like A Rolling Stone" and Danny Brown is in it. Seriously. It's an interactive video that you can watch at Dylan's site and flip through virtual "TV channels" to see his song lip synced by Drew Carey & The Price Is Right, Pawn Stars, ESPN, Danny Brown & other things you might see on TV. It's ridiculous. Watch.
Dylan also just released The Complete Album Collection Vol. 1, and you can watch the trailer video for that below...
